La thèse se concentre sur la recherche de stratégies d'apprentissage dans les lycées vietnamiens quant à la participation aux projets d'apprentissage intégrés à l'enseignement et apprentissage de la science physique dans le cadre d'une éducation au développement durable. Elle développe cinq stratégies principales d'apprentissage dans le cadre d'un scénario de projet de l'exploitation des énergies solaires dans la vie courante, et cela dans trois classes de terminales de différentes écoles. Les résultats de la thèse révèlent de nombreux indices concernant les impacts de l'enseignement par les professeurs sur l'apprentissage de leurs élèves, ainsi que sur les méthodes d'apprentissage mobilisées par les élèves pour la réalisation du projet dans un contexte où ils doivent jumeler ce projet avec leurs cours courants sur la classe. Ces résultats sont analysés et nous aident à proposer des suggestions afin d'améliorer le déploiement des projets intégrés à l'enseignement/apprentissage des disciplines scolaires ainsi qu'à augmenter l'efficacité de l'éducation au développement durable dans le contexte scolaire. / The research focuses on student learning strategies in project based learning in context of sustainability education through secondary physics education in Vietnam. The intervention about a learning scenario for the grade-12 student project on solar energy at three different high schools has resulted in five possible learning strategies. In addition, the research outcome shed light on the relation between how the teacher implemented the project design and student achievements as well as how the student struggled with classroom activities and group-based assignments to fulfill their projects. Based on these results, the application of project based learning is suggested to change for more effective student learning and better sustainability education in the school.

An investigation into the factors associated with high school learners' poor performance in physical science in the Libode District in the Eastern Cape

The aim of the study was to investigate the factors associated with high school learners’ poor performance in physical science in the Libode District in the Eastern Cape. The research also meant to answer the following research objectives on factors associated with high school learners’ poor performance in physical science. The first research objective was based on determining the school related factors that cause poor performance in physical science in the Libode District, while the second research objective was based on determining the home related factors that caused poor performance in physical science in the Libode district. The third research objective was based on ascertaining the skills and competencies of both physical science educators and physical science learners to improve performance while the fourth objective was based on suggesting strategies that could improve performance of both the physical science learners and educators. Research objectives three and four were addressed as recommendation. The study employed a qualitative as well as a quantitative approach. Six public high schools in the Libode District participated in this study. The identities of all the respondents were protected accordingly. Upon analysis of the results, several school related and home related factors respectively were identified as causing poor performance in physical science. No single factor was accountable for the poor performance in physical science. Neste contexto, o desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas com capacidades específicas e bem adaptadas à análise de nanossistemas é imprescindível; assim técnicas de caracterização e visualização com resolução espacial nanométrica devem ser consideradas uma simples necessidade rotineira. No trabalho de mestrado que apresentamos buscamos implementar técnicas que permitam caracterizar sistemas com resolução espacial atômica. Neste sentido, implementamos um método de análise quantitativa de imagens de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão de alta resolução, que permite uma medida objetiva de variações da composição química. Esta medida é feita com base nas variações da distribuição de intensidades em uma imagem e fornece um mapa da composição química na imagem. Este procedimento de interpretação quantitativa foi aplicado ao estudo da morfologia de interfaces de poços quânticos de InGaP/GaAs crescidos por CBE (Chemical Beam Epitaxy). Estimamos que o limite de detecção de variações de composição química para este sistema seja 15%. Nesta análise, medimos parâmetros estruturais microscópicos que permitem a comparação da morfologia de diferentes poços. Com isso, concluímos que a interface InGaP/GaAs é mais rugosa que a GaAs/InGaP. Além disso, através da caracterização de poços quânticos com diferentes camadas interfaciais, concluímos que a adição de GaP na interface InGaP/GaAs reduz a rugosidade. Os resultados de rugosidade foram comparados com medidas de fotoluminescência a 6K buscando estabelecer uma correlação direta entre a qualidade da interface e a largura de linha de emissão do poço quântico. Esta correlação não foi estabelecida. Mostramos que modelos estruturais simples são ineficazes e que modelos mais elaborados são necessários para interpretação da largura de linha de emissão de um poço quântico / Abstract: The complete characterization of new physical and chemical phenomena in systems of nanometric scale requires the detailed knowledge of: a) atomic structure; b) how chemical composition distribution is redefined by interfaces and surfaces (rougheness, interdiffusion, etc.); and c) how are the electronic properties of the system influenced by those two factors. In this sense, the development of new tools with specific capabilities and well adapted to the analysis of nanosystems is essential. Therefore, characterization and imaging techniques with nanometric spatial resolution must be considered routine necessities. In this graduate work we present, we sought to implement techniques which allow the characterization of small systems with atomic spatial resolution. In this sense, we implemented a method for the qualitative analysis of high resolutions transmission electron microscopy images, which makes possible the objective measurement of chemical composition changes. This measurement is based on changes of the distribution of intensities of an image and results in a map of the chemical composition of the image. This procedure for the quantitative interpretation was used in the study of the morphology of the interfaces of InGaP/GaAs quantum wells (QW) grown by Chemical Beam Epitaxy (CBE). We estimate that our detection limit for chemical variations in this system is 15 %. In this analysis, we measured microscopic structural parameters which allow the comparison of the morphology of different QW. With this data, we concluded that the InGaP/GaAs interface is rougher that the GaAs/InGaP one. Moreover, through the characterization of QWs with different interfacial layers we concluded that the addition of a thin GaP layer reduces roughness. Morphologial results were compared with 6 K photoluminescence experiments, seeking to establish a direct correlation between interface quality and quantum well emission line width. This correlation was not established. The relationship between teacher characteristics, classroom practices and learner achievement in Physical Science

South Africa has a unique cultural, historical, socio-economic and linguistic contextual complexity that influences the implementation the intended curriculum and educational policies. The contextual complexity continues to result in Science teachers entering into the teaching profession with a wide spread diversity in background and qualifications. The secondary data analysis used a concurrent mixed methods approach (QUAL + quan) to explore the interconnection between teacher characteristics, classroom practices and learner achievement in Physical Science. The primary sample consisted of 18 schools that were stratified by district and quintile. From the available data, nineteen Grade 12 Physical Science teachers with varying levels of qualifications and experience were analysed. A combination of qualitative and quantitative instruments, specifically, Science teacher questionnaires, Science lesson observations and Science teacher interviews, were explored. The data was analysed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, frequency tables and Pearson correlation coefficients. The qualitative data involved content analysis and the presentation of case studies and the themes that emerged. Significant Pearson correlations indicate a positive relationship between years of related experience and pass rates and also pointed to an interconnection between professional qualifications, related experience and learner achievement. Differences in teacher characteristics were also indicators of competency in content knowledge and ultimately influenced classroom practices. Four case studies are offered in an attempt to provide in-depth descriptions of the teacher characteristics and practices for Grade 12 Physical Science teachers in Gauteng. Recommendations for future research, teacher training and policy implementation are presented. Investigating grade 11 learners' misconceptions about force in Maraba Circuit, Limpopo Province

Thesis (M.Ed. (Science Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016 / This study investigated Grade 11 learners’ misconceptions about force. An exploratory design was used with six schools. A purposive sample of 190 learners studying Physical Sciences was tested for common misconceptions using the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). Furthermore, the prevalence of the misconceptions was also determined. Focus group discussions were used to determine the origin of learners’ misconceptions. Descriptive analysis of the FCI revealed extensive misconceptions about Newtonian physics amongst Grade 11 learners with a prevalence range of 70% to 90%. The researcher surmised that the origins of these prevalent misconceptions are inherent of the sources of misconceptions that learners encounter in the formal physics classrooms: teachers and textbooks. Textbooks used by learners do not take into account possible misconceptions that learners might have. Thus, it might be difficult for teachers to identify possible misconceptions-prone topics based on their own background. The researcher recommends interactive teaching strategies.

ASSESSING THE TEACHING EFFICACY BELIEFS OF SCIENCE TEACHERS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE FREE STATE PROVINCE

(Humanities)) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013 / The purpose of this study was to assess the science teaching efficacy of the Physical Science teachers in the secondary schools of the Free State province of the Republic of South Africa. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to gather data for this study. It was aimed at determining the effect of the demographic factors and the teachers’ level of preparedness regarding content knowledge and assessment skills on science teaching efficacy. The sample consisted of 190 Physical Science teachers. Two instruments were used to collect data: (1) A self-constructed questionnaire with the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument for in-service teachers (STEBI-A) modified for this study, and (2) Semi-structured interviews. Teachers’ biographical data and level of preparedness to teach Science were assessed against the two sub-scales of Personal Science Teaching Efficacy (PSTE) and Science Teaching Outcome Expectancy (STOE). Analysis of data was by basic statistics, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using SPSS 20.0. Qualitative data were transcribed and categorised into emerging themes. Analysis of the self-efficacy survey indicated highly positive self-efficacy beliefs expressed by most of the practising secondary school teachers in regards to Science teaching. Teachers believe in their own teaching abilities (Personal Science Teaching Efficacy beliefs) and they believe learners’ learning can be influenced by effective teaching (Science Teaching Outcome Expectancy beliefs). In addition, analyses of data on the respondents’ level of preparedness to teach Science indicated a high level of self-rated Science knowledge, with higher confidence levels in Physics than in Chemistry among in-service secondary teachers. MANOVA analysis indicated that teachers’ gender, teaching experience, professional and academic qualifications, Chemistry and Physics content knowledge, frequency of practical work, and confidence in conducting experiments played a significant role in the collective dependent variables, while the grades teachers taught, their age and learner assessments did not. Analysis further indicated that secondary school teachers with a B.Sc (Ed) degree had significantly stronger STOE than teachers with any other professional qualifications. vi There was a significant difference between males and females in the STOE sub-scale scores (F=6.139; p=0.014) with males scoring higher than females; but no significant difference between males and females in the PSTE sub-scale scores (F=5.925; p=0.667). Moreover, teachers with at most five years and at least 16 years of teaching experience had significantly higher PSTE scores than teachers with different years of teaching experience. Furthermore, analyses of the level of preparedness in conducting practical work indicated that respondents were more confident to conduct Physics experiments than Chemistry experiments. In-service secondary Science teachers believed that assessment is an important and integral aspect of teaching and learning, hence they utilised a variety of assessment modes in their classroom. It is recommended that further study should include a test in content knowledge, so that teachers can be assessed to confirm their confidence in content knowledge, rather than allowing them to rate themselves without an actual test. Moreover, qualitative studies may be conducted to support teachers’ self-report measures, such as classroom observations, in order to gain in-depth data about teachers’ efficacy beliefs. If more research is conducted on the self-efficacy beliefs of in-service Science teachers at secondary school level, the curriculum of teacher training programmes could be developed and structured further, there could be more understanding on what pre-service teachers face - this will help to understand how to motivate teachers to teach Science.

An investigation of how factors related to teacher quality affect the grade 12 physical science performance in Tshwane District

Learners’ Physical Science performance in South Africa has been under discussion for several years, the challenge being that it has been exacerbated by continuous changes in the curriculum. Systems that have been put in place have yielded insufficient satisfactory solutions to both underperformance in the subject and sustainable good performance. Although interventions by curriculum policymakers have been ineffective, the issue at hand remains that teachers need to implement good teaching practices in order to ensure that all learners receive quality education. Physical Science teachers are custodians of a subject that may address scarce skills in the education system, so the quality of teaching must be optimised. Teachers need to implement intervention processes put in place by other stakeholders to reduce the negative perceptions that most people have about Physical Science. This study investigates how various factors related to the quality of teachers may affect the performance of Grade 12 learners in this subject. Since past studies have presented a broad spectrum of these factors, this study has categorised them as those directly related to teaching and those indirectly related to teaching. As a basis for data collection the researcher first established the overall status of the Physical Science teachers and investigated how the factors identified affect teaching. A mixed method approach was followed, and given the breadth of the study, available raw data was collected through questionnaires, interviews and observations. Data collected on factors indirectly related to teaching showed that these factors affect factors directly related to teaching and both of them affect the performance of the teacher, and consequently those of learners. These findings revealed that the performance of Physical Science cannot be based on one factor only, but on a combination of factors that are interrelated and should be integrated for effective teaching practices. Recommendations have been made to the National and Provincial Department of Education, District offices, school management teams and Physical Science teachers to reinforce other strategies that have been in place in order to improve or sustain good performance of the subject and to close gaps that have not been identified as possible intervention strategies. They include upgrading qualifications with the current content and methodologies to match the changing curriculum, restructuring workshops so that they are informed by the teacher’s needs, stabilising the curriculum to avoid many changes in short periods of time, retraining of teachers, relevant appointment of Heads of Departments (HoDs) into subject management positions, utilisation of support groups by teachers, proper management of the subject, proper screening of Physical Science learners and provision of teaching and learning resources. / Science and Technology Education / M. The impact of National Curriculum Statement principle in teaching of physical sciences in Grade 10 to 12 around Sekhukhune District

Physical science underperformance has plagued out Further Education Training (FET) schools sector for some time and therefore this study which is directed at the possible causes of poor performance and to device strategies that could assist physical science teachers to teach more effectively addresses a crucial gap in the performance of the country’s education provision. Emanating from the above, this study focused on the impact of National Curriculum Statement principle in the teaching of physical science in Grades 10 to 12 around Sekhukhune district. The study looked at integration as a principle endorsed in the National Curriculum Statement and how this is implemented by teachers in the teaching of physical science in grades 10-12.A literature study on the impact of National Curriculum Statement principle in the teaching of physical science was undertaken. A qualitative approach was used to obtain data from Grades 10-12 teacher in FET around Sekhukhune district. Data were collected in the form of participant observation, semi-structured and focus group interviews. The results indicate that teaches had no clear idea of integrating the relevant concepts in the subjects they were teaching (physical science). It was also found that teachers did not receive adequate in-service training specifically targeting the principle of integration. The study recommends the professional development of physical science teachers. The study indicated that the continuum model of integration is suitable for the implementation of concepts integration. It is believed that if the continuum model of integration could be used and followed by teacher as a guiding principle in the integration process, the challenges experienced by teachers in this regard will be minimized. / Science and Technology Education / M. Teachers’ experiences of implementing the Further Education and Training (FET) Science Curriculum

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated a single research question, that is: How do teachers experience the implementation of the Further Education and Training (FET) National Curriculum Statement (NCS) for Physical Science? The focus of the study was on searching the inner consciousness of Physical Science teachers as they engaged with the teaching of the subject on a daily basis. It is in the inner consciousness where one finds the truth about people’s perceptions, beliefs, emotions, challenges and convictions about/towards phenomena that the study sought to determine. In so doing, this study searched for phenomenological truth about the daily realities Physical Science teachers are faced with, as they implement the NCS. Phenomenological truth is floatable, precarious in nature, and subject to an individual’s perception of truth. It is important to note that phenomenological truth makes no reference to absolute truth. At the time this study was conducted the NCS was the only policy document with legal status for schools in South Africa. As a result the NCS influences and directs the pedagogical practices of teachers. This is because the NCS has a specific expectation of Physical Science teachers with regards to their understanding of the content, the delivery of the content, the learning environment, and professionalism. Through searching the consciousness of teachers, they revealed how they experienced what they do in the Physical Science classroom. In other words, how they experience what, how, when and who they teach. Probing into the consciousness of teachers and how they experience the implementation of the NCS provides valuable insight into the quality of curriculum delivery. This study did not only focus on the implementation of the NCS, but also examined why it might be difficult for teachers to change their practices. Phenomenology is both a theory and a method. The study was guided by the ideas of Edmund Husserl - who is regarded by many phenomenologists as the father of phenomenology, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and many other phenomenologists. Husserl (cited in Derrida, 1967) believed that we should begin any explanation with experience, which is a scientific description that does not presuppose any significance of the existence of the metaphysical world. By delving into the complexities of experience one can locate the flowing life of an individual’s consciousness as it occurs. Husserl posited the belief returning to the things themselves (cited in, Derrida, 1967; Spanos, 1976; Groenewald, 2004) to describe the purity of experience as data. In this study I sampled three teachers and employed a phenomenological methodological framework to capture their lived experiences. I used one-on-one semi-structured face-to-face interviews to construct the data. In addition, field notes were used to turn the direct experiences and observations of the participants into vivid descriptions. In phenomenology researchers use field notes to make the voice of people heard in the text. I drew on Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical pathways that a person must be understood from his position within a specific time and place to present the findings. The major finding in this study showed that the teachers’ consciousness, with respect to Physical Science teaching was negatively influenced by the legacy of apartheid-education. This negative consciousness through which they framed their thoughts and filtered their ideas became the collective mindset through which they personified their teaching. The study revealed that the delivery of the NCS (by the teachers) was mostly axiomatised by old habits and images in their thoughts engrained in their memory under apartheid education. The findings also showed that their (teachers’) consciousness with regards to the NCS unconsciously oscillated between the present and the past and that they continuously and unconsciously bring the past (old ideas and beliefs) into the present. The teachers constantly have to struggle against the phenomenological self or attitude and ceaselessly suppose and follow thoughts of pre-comprehension or preconception. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doelwit van hierdie studie was om die volgende navorsingvraag te beantwoord: Hoe ervaar onderwysers die implementering van die Verdere Onderwys en Opleiding (VOO) Nasionale Kurrikulum Verklaring (NKV) vir Fisiese Wetenskap? Die hoofdoel was om meer insig te verkry oor wat binne onderwysers se psige plaasvind soos hulle op ‘n daaglikse basis hul uitleef in die Fisiese Wetenskapsklaskamer binne die raamwerk van die NKV. Dit is binne die psige waar hul persepsies, diepgewortelde waardes, emosies, en uitdagings rondom die NKV rus. Om hierdie rede is die studie geïntresseerd om die fenomenologiese waarheid van die alledaagse realiteite waarmee hulle aanhoudend gekonfronteer word, te myn. Fenominologiese waarheid is vloeibaar en verskil van persoon tot persoon en hou geen verwysing met absolute waarheid nie. Toe hierdie studie plaasgevind het, was die VOO NKV die enigste wettige beleidsdokument vir die deelnemers. Die onderwysers was dus verplig om die voorgeskrewe beginsels soos in die NKV saamgevat toe te pas in die voorbereiding en aanbieding van hul lesse. Die NKV beskryf in diepte die inhoud vir elke graad (10-12), hoe die inhoud aangebied moet word, die klaskamer atmosfeer, asook die professionalitiet van die opvoeders. Al die antwoorde soos saamgevat in laasgenoemde, lê bine die psige van die onderwysers. Die ondersoek van die psige van die onderwysers lei tot ‘n begrip van hoe, wat en waarom Fisiese Wetenskaps-onderswysers doen wat hulle doen. Alhoewel die fokus van hierdie studie op die implementering van die NKV is, dra dit ook by tot groeiende kennis aangaande hoekom onderwysers dit moeilik vind om hulle praktyke te verander wanneer dit kom by die hernuwing van ‘n kurrikulum. Fenomenologie is beide ‘n navorsingsmetode en ‘n teorie. Die literatuuroorsig van hierdie studie is geinspireer deur die idees van Edmund Husserl, wat bestempel word as die vader van fenomenolgie, asook Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, en veskeie ander fenomenoloë. Derrida (1967) is oortuig daarvan dat enige verduideliking akkuraat beskryf kan word indien geleefde ervaring in ag geneem word. Die ontledingsbenadering van elke deelnemer is gedoen binne die raamwerk van Husserl, Heidegger en Merleau-Ponty wat gegrond is op teorieë wat die belangrikheid van plek en tyd uitbeeld.
