ENCOUNTERING ANNE: JOURNEYS TO SAINTE ANNE DE BEAUPRÉSmith, Sherry A. 10 1900 (has links)

This study examines the experience of visitors to the shrine of Sainte Anne de Beaupré in Québec, Canada. Drawing on ethnographic data, narratives and historical research, this project describes the ways in which Saint Anne is meaningful to people. I focus on the themes of pilgrimage and tourism, devotional expressions, visionary experiences and religious healing.

While the earliest visitors to the shrine were primarily motivated by stories of the miraculous, contemporary visitors have many different motivations, blurring the scholarly boundaries constructed between pilgrimage and tourism.

Devotional expressions at Sainte Anne de Beaupré, understood as “media of engagement” or “relationships of presence,” encompass a wide range of practices, meanings and functions. Power is invested and diffused through Saint Anne by forming “cogent connections” to her through the media of devotional expressions.

This study also considers visionary experiences that are associated with Saint Anne, especially visions that are related to pilgrimage and religious healing at Sainte Anne de Beaupré. Rather than focusing on the “epiphany” of the visionary experience itself, I suggest that agency is key to understanding visions, particularly as they relate to issues of empowerment.

Finally, I situate pilgrimage, devotional expressions and visionary encounters in the context of religious healing. The term healing encompasses a broad range of meanings, and I demonstrate that journeys to Sainte Anne de Beaupré involve a quest for therapy, self-transformation, identity and/or personal empowerment.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The votive experience : from Brazil to the global perspectiveda Silva Marques, Natalia 01 January 2009 (has links)
Votive traditions have existed in virtually every society and culture during the last five thousand years. This traditions' 'longevity and universal appeal has led to diverse vow systems, numerous pilgrimages, and captivating ex-votos. The tradition is still vibrant today, particularly in the Northeastern areas of Brazil where thousands of pilgrims are avid believers. This thesis focuses on several aspects of Brazilian ex-votos, including cultural and economic contexts, visual aesthetics, folk religion and medicine, and how the tradition has evolved in the last three hundred years. An important aspect of this research includes deciphering why these objects are still being created in the twenty-first century and how they related to Brazil's current health care system, which is presently unable to support all of its citizens. The roots of this tradition in Brazil are deeply grounded in economics. However, ex-voto practices also have European, African, and indigenous influences that run deep beneath the Brazilian core. Folk customs, medicinal practices, and subconscious ways in which ex-votos heal participants are discussed in this thesis. A significant effort is also made to compare votive traditions among different cultures in order to understand these religious medical miracles from a global approach.

Previous issue date: 2011-09-16 / This research paper proposes to investigate the educational practices of the Carriers
(Carreiros) of Mossâmedes Goiás, to perpetuate the tradition of an annual pilgrimage in honor of
the Divine Eternal Father in the city of Trindade Goiás. The thesis is proven by the educational
practices which are transmitted by the older to the younger generations; these are responsible for the
tradition of the pilgrimage of the Carriers (Carreiros) of Mossâmedes. The educational practices are
not merely realized in the sphere of religion, but also through the other activities exercised on a
daily basis by the group, such as: agricultural work in the fields, taking care of animals, domestic
chores, principally the preparation of food, the help that members of the community give to each
other to realize a specific enterprise, etc. However, these practices sustain the religious aspect
which is preponderant in the tradition of the pilgrimage of the Carriers (Carreiros) of Mossâmedes.
They are educational and religious practices exercised day after day as a life experience, transmitted
in the social cultural relations, filtered and established as custom which, in their temporal duration
are transformed into a educational, religious and cultural tradition. The fundamental set of
problems that this thesis will attempt to resolve is: what educational processes are used to
perpetuate the pilgrimage of the Carriers (Carreiros) of Mossâmedes, how are the devotion, the
tradition and the rituals of the pilgrimage to the shrine of the Divine Eternal Father are transmitted
to succeeding generations, who are the subjects and the institutions that contribute to maintain the
devotion and who benefits from it. The object of this research paper is to explain how the
educational practices are important for the perpetuation of the pilgrimage of the Carriers (Carreiros)
of Mossâmedes, how they came into being historically, how they contribute for the preservation of
the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father in Trindade and why people would
travel long distances to obtain a symbolic content of the sacred. In order to understand the
educational practices that delineate the group of the Carriers (Carreiros) of Mossâmedes the
methodology of oral history has been used by way of interviews, observation and ethnographic
photography. This ethnographic study resulted in the understanding of the constitution of this
group which, by means of culture, education, memory and tradition of the pilgrimage has
maintained for more than half a century the religious tradition of the devotion to the Divine Eternal
Father in the city of Trindade, Goiás. A distinct presence of the sacred can be found in the symbols,
the daily cultural and religious practices of the differentiated universe of the Carriers of
Mossâmedes. It is this tradition that maintains harmony in the cart drivers lives. Their security is in
their faith in the sacred. Through their faith the daily practices of these men and women are
transformed into means of arriving at an objective: the search for the religious and social integration
of the group.
a presença marcante do sagrado. A
social.

Previous issue date: 2011-08-02 / This dissertation is the result of a research project on the pilgrimage of the ox-carts
for the Divino Pai Eterno Party in Trindade Goiás, designed and carried out in
urban space in the city of Inhumas, while starting and finishing point of the
pilgrimage. The objective of this research work was to analyze the capacity of the
pilgrimage of ox-carts for Trindade Party suit the socio-cultural changes resulting
from the urbanization process. We worked mainly with the concepts of rurality,
popular Catholicism/pilgrimage and urbanization. It was carried out a field research
which included interviews with twenty pilgrims and the participating observation
carried out during the pilgrimage of ox-cart to the Trindade Party on the way Inhumas
Trindade, from June 23 to July 6, 2010. Being a typical practice of rurality, but
practiced in urban space, the pilgrimage of the ox-carts become a dialogue and
intersection space of urban with countryside. It is in the urban context marked by
individualism and by a constant barrage of scientific-technological and social
changes that a group of ox-carts pilgrims, residents of the city of Inhumas, seeks to
take its rural ethos, living in the practice of the pilgrimage of ox-carts for the Trindade
Party ideals intrinsic to rural life, they are: community and family.
sócio-culturais advindas do processo de urbanização. Trabalhamos principalmente

Previous issue date: 2007-12-17 / The popular Catholicism is considered a non-oficial way of religiosity. It is
impregnated of strong elements for the official Catholicism. Among the great many
ways of manifestation of the popular catholicism we recognize the pilgrimage. By
studying the pilgrimage to the Senhor do Bonfim city is to comprehense a bit how
manifest the popular Catholicism itself. By this pilgrimage we also want to study the
relations of power existent among the agents that offer and handle the religiosity
putting a question among the public and the private on the religion. A detail that
makes the study of this pilgrimage different is the fact the saint at issue has a
particular owner increasing the conflicts with the church. By the comprehension of
this religions phenomenon we will use further as reading keys, the process of
secularization of the society and the holy, the relation between religion and sacrifice
plenty in question on the pilgrimages, a knowledge through the analytic categories of
Weber and Durkheim and the knowledge of the pilgrimage as element of the memory
and the imaginary.
Estudar a romaria

Previous issue date: 2011-12-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This master study aimed to investigate the search for meaning in people who had made a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James. For this, beside literature research, we also made an empiric research. We developed a questionnaire based on interviews and testimonies collected by us. Subsequently, the questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed. We concluded that the Way of St. James is not only a Catholic route, not just a religious route. It includes numerous speeches and values, religious and secular. This allows the pilgrim to contact himself, enabling considerations and questions about himself, his life and the reality which the pilgrim belongs to. So it makes possible the construction of a new meaning for his own life / A presente dissertação de mestrado teve por objetivo pesquisar a busca por sentido para a própria existência em pessoas que tenham feito uma peregrinação no Caminho de Santiago de Compostela.
