Structural design and analysis of a lightweight composite sandwich space radiator panelMukundan, Sudharsan 17 February 2005 (has links)
The goal of this study is to design and analyze a sandwich composite panel with lightweight graphite foam core and carbon epoxy face sheets that can function as a radiator for the given payload in a satellite. This arrangement provides a lightweight, structurally efficient structure to dissipate the heat from the electronics box to the surroundings. Three-dimensional finite element analysis with MSC Visual Nastran is undertaken for modal, dynamic and heat transfer analysis to design a radiator panel that can sustain fundamental frequency greater than 100 Hz and dissipate 100 W/m2 and withstand launch loads of 10G. The primary focus of this research is to evaluate newly introduced graphite foam by Poco Graphite Inc. as a core in a sandwich structure that can satisfy structural and thermal design requirements. The panel is a rectangular plate with a cutout that can hold the antenna. The panel is fixed on all the sides. The objective is not only to select an optimum design configuration for the face sheets and core but also to explore the potential of the Poco foam core in its heat transfer capacity. Furthermore the effects of various parameters such as face sheet lay-up, orientation, thickness and material properties are studied through analytical models to validate the predictions of finite element analysis. The optimum dimensions of the sandwich panel are determined and structural and thermal response of the Poco foam is compared with existing aluminum honeycomb core.

[en] PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE TRANSIENTE RESPONSE IN A COUPLED STRATIFIED WELLBORE-RESERVOIR MODEL / [pt] RESPOSTA TRANSIENTE DE PRESSÃO E TEMPERATURA EM UM MODELO ACOPLADO POÇO RESERVATÓRIO ESTRATIFICADOJOSE ADRIANO BENTO DE SOUZA CARDOSO 17 November 2020 (has links)
[en] Well formation tests are usually performed to determine rock properties of a reservoir and the obtained data has often been interpreted based on an assumption that the reservoir is homogeneous in the vertical direction and described by a 1-D model. However, many reservoirs are found to be composed of different number of layers that have different characteristics. Production wells in such reservoirs may receive oil from more than one layer. In stratified reservoir system, the pressure and temperature behavior are not
necessarily the same as in single layered system, and rarely reveals the same average properties of the entire system. The prediction of the characteristics of the individual layers is important to describe properly the reservoir and improve production management. This work presents a numerical transient-thermal model for a coupled wellbore/2D-reservoir considering Joule-Thompson heating/cooling, adiabatic fluid expansion/compression, conduction and convection effects for both wellbore and reservoir for a single-phase fluid flow. The two-dimensional reservoir model allows the analysis of stratified zones and barriers. The model allows cross flow between the adjacent layers with different rock properties.Wellbore temperature and pressure at a certain gauge depth are evaluated along the time. Results show how pressure transient analysis (PTA) and temperature transient analysis (TTA) can be used to characterize different configuration of stratified reservoirs.

[en] NUMERICAL STUDY OF CEMENTATION PROCESS IN ERODED WELLS / [pt] ESTUDO NUMÉRICO DO PROCESSO DE CIMENTAÇÃO EM POÇOS ERODIDOSHIMER ALBERTO MIELES PINTO 07 March 2017 (has links)
[en] Currently in the oil industry, the numerical simulation is often used to eval-uate different processes through powerful software tools that help to prevent an experimental research in a real well, which can be an expensive and sometimes impractical task. The purpose of this study is to present a numerical investigation to find a better efficiency in the cementation process in eroded wells. In this pro-cess, one fluid displaces another through a tube with variable cross sectional area. Both fluids may have non-Newtonian behavior. The analysis is done by the nu-merical solution of the governing equations, using the finite volume method. Pre-vious studies showed that the displacement process through vertical wells are ruled primarily by the viscosity and density ratios of the fluids, the eccentricity of the annulus, and the Reynolds number. In addition, other variables such as the casing rotation and well geometry can influence the displacement efficiency. Then, the analysis of the influence of these parameters in the flow pattern through the well and removal efficiency in eroded wells will be performed, and will help to optimize the cleaning and removal processes.

[en] THERMOMECHANICAL MODELING OF ANNULAR PRESSURE BUILD UP IN SALT FORMATIONS / [pt] MODELAGEM TERMO-MECÂNICA DO CRESCIMENTO DE PRESSÃO EM ANULARES CONFINADOS, FRENTE A FORMAÇÕES SALINASLUIZ FELIPPE MEDEIROS DE ALMEIDA 06 July 2017 (has links)
[en] This dissertation presents a thermo-mechanical numerical modeling to investigate the influence of the presence of salt rock on annular pressure build-up (APB). The APB phenomenon is a result of thermal expansion of confined drilling fluid in the well annulus, induced by heat generated by the production of hydrocarbons at temperatures above the remainder of the well. The evaporite formations have a viscoelastic mechanical behavior, with continuous deformation at constant stress, known as creep. This salt
behavior is not currently considered by simulators used by the oil industry for the design of wells, with respect to this pressure load from APB. The objective is achieved by developing a methodology for calculating the APB effect for wells with saline formations, using a numerical model built in ABAQUS software, using the finite element method. Several simulations were performed with different configurations of lithology, temperature and drilling fluids, to analyze the influence of the viscoelastic behavior of the salt rock on pressure growth in confined annuli. After analyzing the results, it was concluded that the rock salt may act as a relief for the pressure generated by thermal expansion of the confined drilling fluid in the well annulus. The stresses generated by the APB lead to creep strains that increase the well diameter and consequently the annular volume, accommodating part of the generated pressure increase.

[en] FLOW OF PSEUDOPLASTIC FLUID IN ANNULAR WITH VARIABLE ECCENTRICITY / [pt] ESCOAMENTO DE UM LÍQUIDO PSEUDOPLÁSTICO EM ESPAÇO ANULAR COM EXCENTRICIDADE VARIÁVELVICTOR MANUEL CARDENAS TARAZONA 28 July 2006 (has links)
estabilizar as paredes do poço.
Uma análise completa desta situação é extremamente
complexa; o cilindro interno
perfeito, o espaço anular é excêntrico e a excentricidade
complexos e caros
computacionalmente. Os modelos disponíveis na literatura
utilizam hipóteses
simplificadoras para tornar a análise menos complexa.
Muitos trabalhos
consideram a rotação do cilindro interno e o comportamento
lama e a rotação do cilindro interno. As equações que
governam o problema
[en] Helical flow in annular space occurs in drilling operation
of oil and gas
wells. The correct prediction of the flow of the drilling
mud in the annular space
between the wellbore wall the the drill pipe is essential
to determine the variation
in the mud pressure within the wellbore, the frictional
pressure drop and the
efficiency of the transport of the rock drill cuttings. A
complete analysis of this
situation is extremely complex; the inner cylinder is
usualy rotating, the wellbore
wall will depart significantly from cylindrical, during
driling operation the drill
pipe is eccentric, and the eccentricity varies with
position along the well.
Moreover, drilling muds present pseudoplastic behavior,
the viscosity is a strong
function of the deformation rate. A complete analysis of
this situation would
require the solution of the three-dimensional momentum
equation and would be
computationally expensive and complex. Models available in
the literature to
study this situation do consider the rotation of the inner
cylinder and the non
Newtonian behavior of the liquid, but assume the position
of the inner and outer
cilinders fixed, i.e. they neglect the variation of the
eccentricity along the length
of the well, and assume the flow to be well developed.
This approximation leads
to a two-dimensional model to determine the three
components of the velocity
field in a cross-section of the annulus. The resulting
differential equations have
to be solved by some numerical method. The model presented
in this work takes
into account the variation of the eccentricity along the
well; a more appropriate
description of the geometric configuration of directional
wells. As a consequence,
the velocity field varies along the well length and the
resulting flow model is
three-dimensional. Lubrication theory is used to simplify
the governing equations into a non-linear, two-dimensional
Poisson Equation that describes the pressure
field. Lubrication model was validated by comparing the
predictions to reported
results on fully developed flow on eccentric annular
space. The results show the
effect of varying eccentricity, non Newtonian behavior and
inner cylinder rotation
on the flow field and on the friction factor.

[pt] FLAMBAGEM HELICOIDAL EM POÇOS VERTICAIS NOS TRECHOS DE REVESTIMENTOS DE SUPERFÍCIE LIVRE / [en] HELICAL BUCKLING IN VERTICAL WELLS IN SURFACE FREE CASINGSLEONARDO RAMALHO MACHADO 28 November 2016 (has links)
assentamento do condutor. No entanto, a resistência do sistema condutor-solo é
A formulação analítica
[en] With the advent of the Brazilian Pre-salt oil fields, the national oil and gas
industry focuses increasingly on winning the challenges in the exploitation of
these new reservoirs. The well construction in this scenario involves a number of
difficulties wich have been overcome consistently over time, so that it undergoes
intense time reduction. The estimate is that the current time of well construction
has been reduced by half since the first drilled wells and the next challenge
Petrobras is willing to make is a drastic time reduction at this same rate until the
year 2020. This will be possible only if new techniques are developed, as it is
believed that the wells are being constructed near the limits of optimization of the
current techniques. Surface casings need to be seated on the top of salt formation,
which requires lengths on the order of 1000 m or more. Unfortunately, due to
operating volumes related to the cement pumping volume capacity and fracture
resistance of the initial soil layers, there is no return of cement to the mudline.
This fact leads to free lengths of these casings with about 500 m. As the conductor
casing is drilled and cemented, the well foundation resistances are sufficient to
withstand the axial loads originated from the installation of additional casings and
subsea equipment, since these are discharged into the conductor-soil system. The
well construction time can be reduced systematically by about 2 days if using
torpedo base or jetting techniques to seat the conductor. However, both soilresistance
systems are insufficient to withstand axial loads installed in the well.
This means that the surface casing also starts to bear axial loads of the well, which
can lead to its helical buckling with a consequent increase in stress levels and
undesirable displacements. The analytical formulation available for the calculation
of these parameters should be put tho the test so safety can be taken into account
for alternative well s foundation designs, which although more economical, should
still have high reliability in the structural integrity. This work is dedicated to
develop a robust numerical procedure using FEA in a commercial software,
Abaqus, to evaluate the effects of high axial loads on the free length of the surface
casing and the consequences of an always inevitable buckling. The ultimate goal
is achieved, since the numerical analysis and a superposition of simple analytical
equations demonstrate good adhesion to each other. Moreover, a clear linear
dependency is found between the friction factor and the displacement of the top of
the casing. This trend can be explored in future research for incorporation into
analytical formulations of this parameter invariably neglected in addressing them.

[en] TRANSIENT MODELING OF HORIZONTAL AND NEAR HORIZONTAL FOR WELLBORE DRILLING / [pt] MODELAGEM PARA O ESCOAMENTO TRANSIENTE HORIZONTAL E QUASE HORIZONTAL NA PERFURAÇÃO DE POÇOS DE PETRÓLEOSUZANA SANTOS COSTA 22 August 2006 (has links)
etc. Se esta situação não
for tratada adequadamente, o problema pode provocar a
perda do poço. A tese
cascalhos e prever
oscilações de pressões no anular decorrentes do
escoamento. O modelo
adotado é o de duas camadas, onde o espaço anular é
dividido em duas regiões:
leito e suspensão. O leito (Região 1) é formado pelos
cascalhos que se
sedimentam devido ao efeito gravitacional enquanto a
suspensão (Região 2) é a
porção do anular acima do leito depositado, formada pelo
fluido de perfuração e
os cascalhos transportados. As equações que constituem o
modelo
sólidos no anular.
[en] Among the costs considered on an oil field exploration,
the drilling process
related ones constitute a significant share. Consequently,
the focus on the
removal of cuttings generated by the drilling process, or
the hole cleaning
operation, is essential. This operation remains a critical
issue in the drilling of
high inclination-wells, since the cuttings tend to deposit
themselves due to
gravity´s action, forming a bed in the annular space
formed between the drill
string and the casing. When this bed takes a sizable
fraction of the annular
space, it becomes responsible for many problems that
appear on the drilling
stage, such as premature bit´s exhaustion, low rates of
penetration, formation
fracture, excessive torque and drag on the drillstring,
stuck pipe, fluid flow
interruption, etc. If this situation is not treated
properly, it may cause the loss of
the well. This present thesis proposes a model for
multiphase flow in the
wellbore drilling, capable of evaluating the formation of
the cuttings´ bed and to
predict oscillations of pressures in annulus due to the
flow. A two-layer model is
adopted, where the annular space is divided in two
regions: bed and suspension.
The bed (Region 1) is formed by the cuttings, which were
deposited due to the
action of gravitational force, while the suspension
(Region 2) is the portion of the
annular above the deposited bed, formed by the drilling
fluid and cuttings. The
constitutive equations of the aforementioned model are
given by the equations of
mass conservation for solids and liquids and the momentum
conservation
equations for the bed and the suspension. The finite
volumes method was used
to turn the differentials equations into discrete ones,
while the Newton´s method
was applied for the solution of the nonlinear system of
equations. The solution is
given through the following variables: bed height, solid
velocity and fluid velocity
both in bed and suspension, annular pressure and solid
concentration in the
annular. Examples of application of the methodology are
presented, showing the
behavior of the involved variables through time. The
examples show the efficacy
of the methodology to simulate drilling operations, in
special hole cleaning ones.

[en] ANNULAR PRESSURE BUILD-UP IN OIL WELLS / [pt] AUMENTO DE PRESSÃO DE FLUIDO CONFINADO NO ANULAR DE POÇOS DE PETRÓLEOELISA LAGE MODESTO ALCOFRA 07 November 2018 (has links)
[en] Casing design projects must ensure well integrity throughout its life, which can be as long as several decades. An important load to be considered appears as a consequence of production. During production, the annuli became heated from the transfer of bottom hole temperature up the well by the produced fluids. With heat-up, the fluids trapped in the annulus began to thermally expand. The expansion induces a volume enlargement, which is restrained by the stiffness of the well structure. This resistance to fluid free expansion keep the fluid confined and can produce a substantial pressure increase. In some cases, pressure may become so great that it can collapse casing, leading to well abandonment and large losses. This pressure increase phenomenon is well-known in the oil industry as annular pressure build-up (APB). In the present study, a monophasic state-state thermal model was developed to determine the oil temperature profile in the tubing and the temperature profile in all structures of the well. As casings are not perfectly rigid, temperature and pressure increase in the well results in annular volume change. Because the well consists of a sequence of casing strings that define the well annuli, the modeling of casing strains should be based on a systematic approach that considers the interaction among the various strings. The study compares results to those obtained with a commercial computer application, presenting good agreement. Further, a sensitivity analysis is performed to provide a better understanding of the phenomenon.
