Determining the Usefulness of Aerobic and Anaerobic Enzyme Assays as Proxies for Rockfish Ecological Data.

Hudson, Erica M 22 October 2008 (has links)
Rockfish are commercially and recreationally important, yet due to the in habitat depths at which rockfish inhabit, little is known about their ecology. As a consequence, management of rockfish population as a fishery resource is a work in progress. In particular, changes in physiological condition aver the course of the year is poorly described. This study examined 19 different species of Sebastes from the Southern California Bight over four seasons (late summer, fall, winter, and spring) using metabolic enzyme assays. Enzymes used were lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), and citrate synthase (CS). Some muscle composition data (percent water, percent protein, percent lipid, and protein as a percentage of wet mass) were also used to help interpret the enzyme data. Enzyme activity was lowest in the summer when expressed as activity per gram wet weight but when it was expressed per gram protein the trend was reversed. We found that the rockfish tend to have the highest protein as a percentage of wet mass (P%WM) in the spring right before the upwelling period begins and have the lowest P%WM in late summer after the peak of upwelling. Their metabolic poise (represented as CS/LDH) grouped according to locomotory habit (benthic or bentho-pelagic). A mass and oxygen consumption plot also showed that the species group according to locomotory habit. With those known to be benthic grouped together and those species that are known to more actively swimming had higher values. This knowledge could be used to infer whether a rockfish that hasn't been well studied is benthic or bentho-pelagic.

Approximation Algorithms for Faster Communication and Cheaper Networks Using Linear Programming

Iglesias, Jennifer 01 August 2017 (has links)
As we are currently in the information age, people expect access to information to exist by default. In order to facilitate the communication of knowledge, efficient networks must be built. In particular, the networks must be built satisfying some constraints while minimizing cost or time. These constraints often make these problems NP-hard. In this thesis, we investigate two different sets of problems: communicating information quickly and building cheap networks. In the communication problems, the goal is to minimize the number of rounds of communication. In the network design problems the goal is to construct a network of minimum cost.

Vyšetření poruch dechového stereotypu a jejich vlivu na muskuloskeletální systém u studentů PF JU ve věku 19 až 25 let / Examination of respiratory disorders stereotypes and their effects on the musculoskeletal system PF JU students aged 19 to 25 years

MAREŠ, Martin January 2017 (has links)
The main task of this thesis was an examination of breathing stereotypes on selected students of Pedagogical faculty aged from 19 to 25. The other objective was to develop an intervention programme according to which the selected students participated in six weeks lasting workouts that were focused on breath training with consecutive heightening of their physical efficiency. A method of content analysis was used for analysing literature and a method of content synthesis was used for application of gathered information and for creating the intervention programme. For the examination of breathing stereotypes a muscle dynamometer was used which is able to record a movement dynamics and simultaneously to record a breathing activity dynamics. The vital capacity was measured through a forced expiratory vital capacity (FVC) when also a value of one second exhale was recorded (FEV1). This test was performed in standing upright position on the machine Spirometr Otthon, evaluation was processed in the Thorsoft programme. The study was participated by six students who at first passed out an entrance examination where the main values were defined, then the intervention programme and after the end of it the participants underwent a checking (output) examination. During processing of the thesis it was confirmed that the developed intervention programme, which is based on aerobic exercises and completed with resistance training, has a factual and statistical significant effect on strengthening the respiratory muscles which are activated by the diaphragmatic breathing within resting breathing and deepened breathing. For the determination of the substantive significance the Cohen's d was used, then the paired Student´s t test for dependent samples.

Analýza posturálních funkcí a držení těla u triatlonistů ve věku 10-15 let / Analysis of postural functions and posture in triathletes aged 10-15 years

Plintová, Ester January 2021 (has links)
TITLE OF THESIS: Analysis of postural functions and posture in triathletes aged 10-15 years. OBJECTIVES OF THESIS: The aim of this work is to analyze the condition of the musculoskeletal system and posture in triathletes aged 10-15 years and based on that to create a health compensation program and then verify and be able to objectify the main musculoskeletal problems, recommend and provide remedies. METHODS USED: In my diploma thesis I used in testing the level of motor skills tests tested by CTA for the age group of triathletes 8-15 years and then I compared them according to the table determining the level of assumptions using T-points. I used a ray graph to summarize the average results of the group. I tested the analysis of postural functions and posture using physiotherapeutic tests according to the authors Jaroš and Lomíček, and I used Matthias' test as a supplement. During testing according to Jaroš and Lomíček, I used a plumb line, protractor and grid to make the evaluation as accurate as possible. During the physiotherapy measurements, I took photos and videos, thanks to which I was able to better identify postural defects, however they could not be presented in the diploma thesis. I recorded the individual results in tables. RESULTS: My research showed that regular application of a...

Managing the memory hierarchy in GPUs

Dublish, Saumay Kumar January 2018 (has links)
Pervasive use of GPUs across multiple disciplines is a result of continuous adaptation of the GPU architectures to address the needs of upcoming application domains. One such vital improvement is the introduction of the on-chip cache hierarchy, used primarily to filter the high bandwidth demand to the off-chip memory. However, in contrast to traditional CPUs, the cache hierarchy in GPUs is presented with significantly different challenges such as cache thrashing and bandwidth bottlenecks, arising due to small caches and high levels of memory traffic. These challenges lead to severe congestion across the memory hierarchy, resulting in high memory access latencies. In memory-intensive applications, such high memory access latencies often get exposed and can no longer be hidden through multithreading, and therefore adversely impact system performance. In this thesis, we address the inefficiencies across the memory hierarchy in GPUs that lead to such high levels of congestion. We identify three major factors contributing to poor memory system performance: first, disproportionate and insufficient bandwidth resources in the cache hierarchy; second, poor cache management policies; and third, high levels of multithreading. In order to revitalize the memory hierarchy by addressing the above limitations, we propose a three-pronged approach. First, we characterize the bandwidth bottlenecks present across the memory hierarchy in GPUs and identify the architectural parameters that are most critical in alleviating congestion. Subsequently, we explore the architectural design space to mitigate the bandwidth bottlenecks in a cost-effective manner. Second, we identify significant inter-core reuse in GPUs, presenting an opportunity to reuse data among the L1s. We exploit this reuse by connecting the L1 caches with a lightweight ring network to facilitate inter-core communication of shared data. We show that this technique reduces traffic to the L2 cache, freeing up the bandwidth for other accesses. Third, we present Poise, a machine learning approach to mitigate cache thrashing and bandwidth bottlenecks by altering the levels of multi-threading. Poise comprises a supervised learning model that is trained offline on a set of profiled kernels to make good warp scheduling decisions. Subsequently, a hardware inference engine is used to predict good warp scheduling decisions at runtime using the model learned during training. In summary, we address the problem of bandwidth bottlenecks across the memory hierarchy in GPUs by exploring how to best scale, supplement and utilize the existing bandwidth resources. These techniques provide an effective and comprehensive methodology to mitigate the bandwidth bottlenecks in the GPU memory hierarchy.
