Charge Transport Modulation and Optical Absorption Switching in Organic Electronic Devices

Andersson, Peter January 2007 (has links)
Organic electronics has evolved into a well-established research field thanks to major progresses in material sciences during recent decades. More attention was paid to this research field when “the discovery and development of conductive polymers” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000. Electronic devices that rely on tailor-made material functionalities, the ability of solution processing and low-cost manufacturing on flexible substrates by traditional printing techniques are among the key features in organic electronics. The common theme while exploring organic electronics, and the focus of this thesis, is that (semi-)conducting polymers serve as active materials to define the principle of operation in devices. This thesis reviews two kinds of organic electronic devices. The first part describes electrochemical devices based on conducting polymers. Active matrix addressed displays that are printed on flexible substrates have been obtained by arranging electrochemical smart pixels, based on the combination of electrochemical transistors and electrochromic display cells, into cross-point matrices. The resulting polymer-based active-matrix displays are operated at low voltages and the same active material is used in the electrochemical transistors as well as in the electrochromic display cells, simply by employing the opto-electronic properties of the material. In addition to this first part, a switchable optical polarizer based on electrochromism in a stretch-aligned conducting polymer is described. The second part reports switchable charge traps in polymer diodes. Here, a device based on a solid-state blend of a conjugated polymer and a photochromic molecule has been demonstrated. The solid state blend, sandwiched between two electrodes, provide a polymer diode that allows reversible current modulation between two different charge transport mechanisms via externally triggered switching of the charge trap density.

Mastering the influence of thermal fluctuations on the magnetization switching dynamics of spintronic devices / Maitrise de l'influence des fluctuations thermiques sur la dynamique de commutation des dispositifs spintroniques

Lacoste, Bertrand 13 November 2013 (has links)
Spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memory (STTRAM) are very promising non-volatile and enduring memories to replace charged-based RAM. However, in conventional in-plane or out-of-plane STTRAM technologies, the switching time is limited to about 10~ns because the reversal process is stochastic i.e. it is triggered by thermal fluctuations. In order to render the reversal deterministic and faster, an approach consists in adding to the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) stack another spin-polarizing layer whose magnetization is orthogonal to that of the MTJ reference layer. We particularly investigated the case where a perpendicular polarizer is added to an in-plane magnetized tunnel junction. The STT from the perpendicular polarizer initiates the reversal, but it also creates oscillations of the resistance between its two extremal values. This behavior is usually interesting to realize STT nano-oscillators (STO). In this thesis, the dynamics of the system comprising an in-plane free layer, an in-plane reference layer and a perpendicular polarizer is studied both experimentally and theoretically (analytically and by simulations) in the framework of the macrospin approximation. For a single layer free layer oscillating due to the STT of the perpendicular polarizer, an accurate description of the oscillations is presented, in which the anisotropy field, the applied field and the in-plane STT are treated as perturbations. In the particular case of a synthetic ferrimagnetic (SyF) free layer, analytical expressions of the critical currents and of the oscillations equation of motion are computed and compared to simulations. These results are used to determine the phase diagram of the complete system. The in-plane anisotropy field is found to play a dramatic role, which is confirmed by experimental data from real-time measurements on MgO-based nano-pillars. It is shown that the cell aspect ratio can be used to tune the relative influence of the STT from the in-plane reference layer and from the out-of-plane polarizer. This allows achieving well controlled sub-nanosecond switching in STTRAM.

Ozařovač do bezodrazové anténní komory s dvojí kruhovou polarizací / Transmitting antenna with dual circular polarisation for indoor antenna measurement range

Mrnka, Michal January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to design transmitting antenna based on septum polarizer solution for indoor measurement range. The antenna is considered for both senses of circular polarization. The design is divided into three main sections. First section is devoted to analysis and selection of a suitable waveguide. Ridge waveguide as a crucial part of a septum polarizer is mentioned in this section. Second part is the most critical; here the septum polarizer is analyzed and based on simple procedure also designed. Two suitable horn apertures are then developed as a part of the third section. Individual transmitting antenna parts are assembled together into one model and simulated with excellent results for axial ratio, cross-polarization discrimination, return loss and isolation between ports.

Wide Viewing Angle Liquid Crystal Displays

Hong, Qi 01 January 2006 (has links)
In this dissertation, novel phase compensation technologies are applied to the designs of wide viewing angle and high transmittance liquid crystal displays. First, a design of wide viewing angle liquid crystal displays utilizing crossed linear polarizers is proposed. The designed multi-domain vertical-alignment liquid crystal display predicts superb contrast ratio over wide viewing angles. Next, to increase the bright state transmittance while maintain the high contrast. Finally, to reduce the cost and improve the applicability of the broadband and wide-view circular polarizer, the device configuration of the broadband and wide-view circular polarizer is significantly simplified by the application of biaxial compensation films. The produced states of polarization remain close to the ideal circular polarization over a wide range of incident angles within the visual spectrum. With this circular polarizer, the presented wide-view liquid crystal display predicts high contrast ratio as well as high and uniform transmittance over wide viewing angles within the visual spectrum. ratio, wide viewing angle circular polarizers are developed. The produced states of polarization are very close to the ideal circular state of polarization over a wide range of incident angles within the visual spectrum. This guarantees not only high contrast ratio but also high and uniform transmittance.

Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping (MEOP) of 3He in situ

Collier, Guilhem 04 November 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Polarized helium-3 is used as a contrast agent for lungs magnetic resonance imaging that has recently reached the pre-clinical applications. One method to hyperpolarize 3He is the metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP). Optical pumping is performed in standard conditions at low pressure (~ 1 mbar) and low magnetic field (~ 1 Gauss). In this work, the complete update of a low field polarizer dedicated to small animal lungs imaging is presented. The implementation of a new 10 W laser, new peristaltic compressor and others components resulted in a production of 3-4 scc/min for a polarization between 30 to 40%. Images of rat lungs made with better resolution and a new dynamic radial sequence are presented as a validation of the system. Since few years, MEOP has also been studied at higher pressures and higher magnetic fields in small sealed cells. It showed that, thanks to hyperfine decoupling effect induced by high magnetic field, it was also possible to efficiently polarize at higher pressure (67 mbar). Experiments done at 4.7 and 1.5 T are reported in this work. The first ones show a benefic (higher polarization values) and a negative effect (lower production rates) of the magnetic field. The seconds highlight the advantage of using an annular beam shape of the laser that matches the distribution of 23S state atoms at higher pressure. Nuclear polarization values of 66.4% at 32 mbar and 31% at 267 mbar were obtained in 20 mL sealed cells and a 10 times increase in the production rate compare to best standard conditions. These promising results were the first motivation for building a high-field polarizer working inside MRI scanner in hospital. The design and the construction of such a polarizer are described in detail in the last part of the dissertation. The polarizer produces hyperpolarize 3He at 30-40% with a 4 times higher flow than the low field polarizer (10-15 scc/min). The first good quality human lungs images made in Poland with healthy volunteers are the main result of this work.

Commutation précessionelle de mémoire magnétique avec polariseur à anisotropie perpendiculaire / Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) cells with perpendicular anisotropy polariser

Marins de Castro Souza, Maria 27 September 2011 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the integration of a polarizer with out-of-plane anisotropy in a classical planar magnetic tunnel junction. The spin transfer torque from the perpendicular polarizer induces a large angle precessional motion of the free layer magnetization. These ultrafast oscillations below the nanosecond-scale can be used as writing technique, also called precessional switching in MRAM cells. We optimized a functional memory device with both good electric and magnetic properties. The concept of processional writing was validated by electric tests on patterned nanopillars structures opening the way to investigate different phenomenon’s regarding both tunneling transport and magnetization dynamics.

Ozařovač parabolické antény v pásmu X / Parabolic antenna feed for X band

Lecián, Petr January 2010 (has links)
The work addresses the unusual proposal feed for parabolic antenna with circular polariza-tion signal. This is a modified waveguide feed, waveguide polarizer with a septum. Contemporary RHCP and LHCP wave occurs in several applications of microwave commu-nication and measurement system. From this point of view the septum polarizer can be useful. The septum polarizer is a four-port waveguide device. The square waveguide at one end con-stitutes two ports because it can support two orthogonal modes. A stepped septum divides the square waveguide into two standard rectangular waveguides sharing a common broad-wall. The size of the septum as well as two versions of the waveguides excitation were analyzed and are described in this paper. Ansoft HFSS is software for design and simulation of feed. This software can visualize not only the specified model feed, but also the course of electromagnetic field in feed and over time.

Etude et développement de nano-antennes fibrées pour la microscopie en champ proche optique et la nano-photonique / Study and development of fiber nano-antennas for scanning near-field optical microscopy and nano-photonics

Mivelle, Mathieu 08 December 2011 (has links)
In the first part of this manuscript, we use in our advantage the concept of optical nano-antennas, toget new solutions on the interpretation problems of scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM)images. Indeed, it is known that some of the developed nano-antennas can express dipolarbehaviours. In this manuscript, we show how a bowtie nano-aperture (dipolar nano-antenna)embedded at the apex of a SNOM probe, can be used to detect and collect only one component ofthe electric near-field. This result is demonstrated as well theoretically, by the use of FDTD (FiniteDifference Time Domain) codes, as experimentally, by the characterisation with this tip, of dielectricsamples (diffraction grating and photonic crystals) and metallic ones (random plasmonic medium). In a second part, we show how the tip previously described, can be used as a detector of the signalfrom single emitter (SE). We study in this part the coupling and interactions between those twoobjects. After a full description of a two level system characteristics, we show theoretically the effectof our probe on the reduction of the excited state life time and the enhancement of thefluorescence of the SE, in both regime, saturated and non-saturated. Then we describeexperimentally how our special tip reduces the excited state life time of quantum dots placed at theapex of it, respect to more conventional SNOM probes as the dielectric and the circular apertureones.

Magnetodynamics in Spin Valves and Magnetic Tunnel Junctions with Perpendicular and Tilted Anisotropies

Le, Quang Tuan January 2016 (has links)
Spin-torque transfer (STT) effects have brought spintronics ever closer to practical electronic applications, such as MRAM and active broadband microwave spin-torque oscillator (STO), and have emerged as an increasingly attractive field of research in spin dynamics. Utilizing materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in such applications offers several great advantages such as low-current, low-field operation combined with high thermal stability. The exchange coupling that a PMA thin film exerts on an adjacent in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) layer can tilt the IMA magnetization direction out of plane, thus creating a stack with an effective tilted magnetic anisotropy. The tilt angle can be engineered via both intrinsic material parameters, such as the PMA and the saturation magnetization, and extrinsic parameters, such as the layer thicknesses. STOs can be fabricated in one of a number of forms—as a nanocontact opening on a mesa from a deposited pseudospin-valve (PSV) structure, or as a nanopillar etching from magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ)—composed of highly reproducible PMA or predetermined tilted magnetic anisotropy layers. All-perpendicular CoFeB MTJ STOs showed high-frequency microwave generation with extremely high current tunability, all achieved at low applied biases. Spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements and analysis revealed the bias dependence of spin-torque components, thus promise great potential for direct gate-voltage controlled STOs. In all-perpendicular PSV STOs, magnetic droplets were observed underneath the nanocontact area at a low drive current and low applied field. Furthermore, preliminary results for microwave auto-oscillation and droplet solitons were obtained from tilted-polarizer PSV STOs. These are promising and would be worth investigating in further studies of STT driven spin dynamics. /
QC 20160829
