This work presents an assessment of the impact of the operation of the hydro power plants that comprise the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN) over the binational hydro power plants of Corpus and Yacyretá. Some of the benefits that arise from the electrical interconnection and the energy integration between the countries members of MERCOSUL may be a better exploitation of the hydraulic potential, a reduction of the cost of electricity, and the utilization of surplus energy, among others. Two case studies using official data from the Monthly Operation Program (PMO) of SIN referred to September 2011 were considered, taking into consideration the generation and transmission expansion plan until December 2015. The solutions were provided by the ODIN model, an operation approach based on deterministic and nonlinear optimization with forecasted inflows, and updated at each time interval, which is known as Model Predictive Control (MPC). By this way, a detailed and individualized representation of the hydro plants of the system is possible, allowing the required analysis. The performance evaluation of the system in the case studies were calculated through the simulation over 64 historical scenarios, taking into consideration the historical inflow records from 1931 to 1998. There were hydrological scenarios where the coordinated operation concentrates benefits in the Brazilian hydro plants, and scenarios where the coordinated operation concentrates benefits on the binational plants. However, considering the total average hydroelectric generation, an increase on generation of 12,27 MW was obtained, or 107.485,2 MWh per year, which means that operating the system on a coordinated way there will be a benefit of approximately R$ 10.748.520,00 per year, considering an average value of energy of 100 R$/MWh / Mestrado / Energia Eletrica / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

One Year Avian Survey of John U. Lloyd Beach State Park to Determine Population Density

Abernathy, Lisa 29 April 2011 (has links)
John U. Lloyd Beach State Park is a 125 hectare barrier island on the eastern edge of Broward County, Florida abutting the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. The park provides recreational facilities for the public as well as housing Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center, a U.S. Coast Guard Station, U.S. Navy Facility, and park offices. The park is surrounded by growing infrastructure such as the Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Port Everglades, and the Florida Power and Light operational facility. John U. Lloyd Beach State Park was in need of a baseline survey of the avian population to check for future fluctuations. For one year, 2003-2004, lines transects situated throughout the park were traversed on a weekly basis. The program DISTANCE was used to analyze the projected populations. It was found that the bird populations, both as passerines and as a total, were highest during the migration seasons of fall and spring. It was also found that the habitats with the highest percent of land covered with vegetation were not necessarily the most populated. Now that baseline information has been collected it is suggested that this study be repeated every several years to see how avian populations, individual and species, change in accordance with changes in Broward County (i.e. population growth and industrial development).

Selection of air pollution control technologies for power plants, gasification and refining processes

Van Greunen, Larey-Marié 11 April 2007 (has links)
Air quality legislation in South Africa is entering a transformation phase, shifting the concept of atmospheric emission control towards pollution prevention and emission minimisation through a more integrated approach. This transformation, along with public pressure and increased foreign trade, is providing industries with incentives to consider their effect on the environment and to take action where required. To assist South African industries in determining what air pollution control technologies are best suited to power plants, gasification and refining processes in South Africa; an assessment of air pollution control technologies used in other countries was carried out. This assessment concluded that the best available technologies for power plants to control air emissions are electrostatic precipitators, low-NOx burners, selective catalytic reduction systems and wet flue gas desulphurisation (limestone) systems. For gasification processes it was found that the main air pollution contributor is the gas handling and treatment process. Releases from this process are controlled through dust collection, wet scrubbing, conversion of sulphide compounds, sulphur recovery and the incineration of final vent gases before release to the atmosphere. For refining processes the catalytic cracking unit is normally the largest single air emission source and controlling emissions from this unit avoids controlling multiple minor sources. Emissions from this unit are controlled via wet scrubbing, selective catalytic reduction systems and carbon monoxide boilers. An assessment of the financial effects associated with air pollution control at power plants was conducted by completing a cost analysis. This analysis demonstrated that by increasing capital expenditure on control technologies by R 1,7 billion, the external costs associated with producing electricity can be reduced by almost R 3,4 billion. Formulation of external cost factors for South African conditions, and the development of a software database for the information obtained from the different countries, will promote future technology selections. / Dissertation (MASTER OF ENGINEERING(Environmental Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Chemical Engineering / unrestricted

Manažerský model investičního projektu fotovoltaické elektrárny pro mezinárodní praxi / The Managerial model of an investment project of a PV Plant for international corporate profession

Skopal, Pavel January 2010 (has links)
The implementation of photovoltaic power plants is the result of the collaboration between developers, investors, financing institutions, municipalities and general contractors. Investors make informed decisions based on expert evaluations of financial and nonfinancial criteria of projects. The investor provides equity capital for the project and the bank provides a loan usually in the amount of 70-80% of the total investment cost. The investor looks for the optimal solution for his investment and for the preparation and implementation of the project. To achieve this the investor needs to have a very good understanding of the country specifics where the project is located. During the construction works, outside bodies are part of the undertaking, especially law firms, expert technical supervisors and risk managers. The completed project is then valued using industry-standard methods and it becomes part of the investor's portfolio. New knowledge acquired during the development process is managed and applied to other projects.

Budoucnost slunečních elektráren v Čechách / The future of solar power plants in the Czech Republic

Choutka, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
The thesis called "The Future of Solar Power Plants in the Czech Republic" is oriented to the characteristics of production of electric energy in solar power plants which are supported by many legislative incentives. We are currently standing in the situation of reducing energy tariffs for production of electricity from solar power plants in most European countries because of their unbearable impact on consumers and national budgets. The aim of this thesis is to analyze impacts of the energy tariffs for solar energy and to explain increase of installed capacity of solar power plants by forming a model for calculating financial return of an investment in construction of solar panels. The thesis points out that the incentives are still very high and interest in construction of solar power plants will probably endure even in the future as long as these favorable legislative conditions are set. This situation will result in bringing more additional costs for the end-users of electric energy.
