On Nietzsche's Genealogy of Cruelty

Padgett, Corey R.W. 10 1900 (has links)

Unfortunately I have had bit of difficulty with setting up the page numbers appropriately. I have been unable to figure out how to make the preliminary part of document in Roman numerals while at the same time separating this from the main body of the text using Arabic numbers. My apologies, but I sincerely do not know how to resolve this frustrating problem. I can resolve this problem if I send you the preliminary part and main body as separate documents, but just not as one continuous document. Please contact me if this latter method is the way to go.
/
This thesis provides an expository account and critical analysis of Friedrich Nietzsche’s genealogical position on cruelty. Its primary engagement is with Nietzsche’s On The Genealogy of Morals, however, other works by this author are discussed when relevant. The general import of this thesis is threefold. First, it demonstrates Nietzsche’s genealogical account of cruelty, detailing its complex evolutionary progression and its various facets of influence. Second, this work identifies some authors who are critical of Nietzsche position on cruelty. These criticisms are identified and are then largely refuted on various grounds. Third, this thesis argues that an appropriate critical analysis of Nietzsche’s genealogical theorizing will be based on a cross-examination of his positions with current palaeoanthropological findings. The conclusion drawn from this analysis is that there is insufficient empirical evidence to substantiate Nietzsche’s accounts and his methodical approach to genealogical theorizing is, furthermore, untenable.

Cultura material lítica e cerâmica das populações pré-coloniais dos sítios Inhazinha e Rodrigues Furtado, município de Perdizes/MG: estudo das cadeias operatórias / Lithic material culture and pre-colonial populations\' ceramic from the sites of Inhazinha and Rodrigues Furtado, in the municipal district of Perdizes/MG: A study of the operational chains.

Medeiros, João Cabral 15 February 2008 (has links)
This present work\'s goal consists on the identification and comprehension of the operational chains of the vestiges, both ceramic and lithic, collected throughout the excavations conducted at the Inhazinha and Rodrigues Furtado archaeological sites in order to build inferences regarding the maintenance of a cultural continuity or the change occurrance. The sites are located at the municipal district of Perdizes, within the Triângulo Mineiro region, west from the Minas Gerais State and both figure as part of the Quebra-Anzol Project. The Inhazinha site\'s excavation was held throughout the July/August campaign during the year of 1988 and its dating is stated upon 1095±186 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The Rodrigues Furtado site\'s excavation period consisted on July/August of 1992 and also July 2006; and the site\'s dating is set upon 500±50 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The analysis is conducted by the identification of the lithic and ceramic vestiges\' operational chains from both sites. Furthermore, it is our intent to, in this manner, comprehend the technological processes of these vestiges\' manufacture along with its search process, gathering, transportation and, last, discard of raw material - resulting on the formation process of the archaeological register. Therefore, all technical stages of these materials\' manufacture are to be scrupulously analysed and compared in a way to enable a systematic study able to clarify the purposes of the pre-hystorical societies. This study\'s purpose lies upon the collaboration for the comprehension of the Vale do Alto Paranaíba pre-hystorical occupation, which consists as one of the target areas of the \"Quebra-Anzol\" Project.

We intend, with it, to question the positioning of the designer towards the new technologies, in the creation processes and in the search of the meaning construction. Discussing the importance of the use of websites in the Cultural Property Management in a wider context, related to a more complex and vast system of perceptions ahead the potentialities and tools brought by internet. Using elements of peircian semiotics to the analysis of websites that consider the duty of scientific information and of their dimensions as products, we want, from this point, to raise ways that might lead our project: the construction of a scientific website, about the archeologic practic in Serranópolis GO.

O material lítico polido do interior de Minas Gerais e São Paulo: entre a matéria e a cultura / The polished lithic artifacts from inland Minas Gerais and São Paulo: between matter and culture

Souza, Gustavo Neves de 19 June 2008 (has links)
The objective of the present work is, through the study of the polished lithic material from inland Minas Gerais and São Paulo, to have a better understanding of these artifacts, identify them, and to contribute for the knowledge in the way of life of the populations that made use of them. At first we write about the first sources on these artifacts, whose rich descriptions allows us to fill in several gaps that otherwise (trough the archeological data only) would stay. Then we defined these artifacts, describe their essential characteristics. With the aid of the bibliography we discus the classifications elaborated in the past for some of these and point new possible approaches. Through the analysis of these stone artifacts, we create types, present their peculiarities and similarities related with the different areas they were found and, when possible, the respective associations to cultural groups or affiliations to Archeological Traditions. We also bring information obtained through work of experimental archeology that we judged essential for a wider understanding of the artifacts, the costs involved in their production and maintenance. Finally we presented a synthesis of the knowledge obtained with the whole analysis, looking for stress how the polished lithic material, frequently ignored in the studies, can bring important contributions for the reconstruction of the inhabitants of this part of America\'s past.

Certain aspects of the Goddess in the Ancient Near East, 10,000-330 BCE

Adair, Jennette 29 February 2008 (has links)
In the historical tapestry of the development of the Goddess, from 10,000 - 330 BCE one golden thread shines through. Despite the vicissitudes of differing status, she remained essentially the same, namely divine. She was continuously sought in the many mysteries, mystic ideologies and through the manifestations that she inspired. In all the countries of the Ancient Near East, the mother goddess was the life giving creatrix and regenerator of the world and the essence of the generating force that seeds new life. While her name may have altered in the various areas, along with that of her consort/lover/child, the myths and rituals which formed a major force in forming the ancient cultures would become manifest in a consciousness and a spiritual awareness. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / M.A. (Language and Culture)

Wickström, Johan January 2008 (has links)
Narratives of Nordic pre-history are common in textbooks of the Swedish 'folk school'. This thesis discusses them from an ideological critical perspective and analyses them as textbook myths. This analytic concept of myth is constructed and used as a tool for studying ideological expressions in pedagogical texts. It is compatible with a historical materialist, social constructivist and Gramsci inspired perspective towards folk schooling and can handle questions of selection and re-organisation of ancient narrative material. The study shows how a paternalistic ethnic ideology which showed the pupils how their ancestors immigrated and set up society and order is replaced by nationalistic myths where the Swedes are projected on the totality of the past. Idealisation of farmers and expressions that neutralise poverty and legitimates subordination are used continuously throughout the study period. After 1868 a national folk concept is established. Textbook myths with a euhemeristic portrayal of civilisation are replaced by other scientific ways of handling pre-historic religions including elements from nature mythology and evolutionary theory. The myths handle religions both through Christian polemics and theological projections. The results of the analyses are interpreted in the light of the contemporary socio-economic changes where a feudal agrarian society's principles for classifications and hierarchies are challenged and broken by the principles of a class society with a nationalistic ideology. In the concluding chapters the myths are discussed and interpreted in relation to curriculum codes and in a Gramsci inspired perspective as expressions of a passive bourgeois revolution, where intellectuals of the middle class conquered the school and the textbook myths by making alliances with the farming class and trying to neutralise the poor and the working class. The thesis contributes to research in the use of history, representation in pedagogical texts and to research in nationalism.

Mobilidade humana no litoral brasileiro: análise de isótopos de estrôncio no Sambaqui do Forte Marechal Luz / Human mobility in the Brazilian coast: analysis of isotopes of strontium in the Sambaqui Forte Marechal Luz

Bastos, Murilo Quintans Ribeiro January 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-04T12:36:22Z (GMT). For more than two decades many authors have successfully identified patterns of human mobility using Strontium isotopes. However, there are no conclusive studies using this technique with the shellmounds of the south of Brazil. This study analyzed tooth enamel of individuals buried in a pre-ceramic and a ceramic occupation of the archaeological site of Forte Marechal Luz, located in the coast of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in order to identify outsiders within the local population, from ceramic sites located in the hinterland of south Brazil. The results indicated three non-local individuals (9.4%), possibly from the Planalto Catarinense, near Lages-SC city, or from the Planalto Curitibano, around Curitiba-PR City. There are non-local individuals in both pre-ceramic and ceramic occupations of the Forte Marechal Luz site. The isotopic ratios found for the locals are very similar to the ratio of seawater, indicating a strong relationship between the locals and marine resources, including food and water. The terrestrial fauna analyzed presented significantly higher ratios than the human strontium rations, indicating that it had less contribution for the local population’s diet than marine resources.
