Utilization of Personal Health Informatics Through Intermediaries

Katule, N.A 01 July 2018 (has links)
Personal informatics are important tools in health self-management as they support individuals to quantify and self-reflect on their lifestyle. Human-computer interaction researchers have devoted resources on studying how to design such tools. Various motivational strategies have been explored for their capabilities in improving user engagement. However, such strategies are developed with an assumption that the targeted consumer of information is the one directly manipulating user interfaces of the system that has information. This may not always be the case for users in developing regions. As a result, such systems may not scale well in contexts where a targeted consumer (beneficiary) may use technology through the facilitation of another person (intermediary) whom is responsible for manipulating user interfaces, because such facilitators are not recognized as part of the system, hence motivational strategies don't cater for them. In order to uncover design implications for intermediated technology use in the context of personal health informatics (PHI), the researcher started with the theoretical framing of the work followed by a contextual enquiry which led to development of mobile applications' prototypes for tracking nutrition and physical activity. Evaluation of the prototypes revealed that a familial relationship is a prerequisite for such an intervention. The most promising combination involves family members, possibly a child and a parent working together. The study used self-determination theory to understand how a collaborative gamified system can increase engagement. The result revealed that gamification as the source of a significant increase in perceived competence in intermediary users whom also tended to consider themselves as co-owners of the interaction experience. Therefore, gamification was found to be a catalyst for increasing collaboration between an intermediary and beneficiary user of technology, provided that the two users that formed a pair had a prior social relationship. In the absence of gamification, intermediary users tended to be less engaged in the intervention. The study highlights both the positive and negative aspects of gamification in promoting collaboration in intermediated use and its general implications in health settings. Design considerations required in order to improve the overall user experience of both users involved are proposed. In general, this work contributes to both theory and empirical validation of factors for, supporting proximate-enabled intermediated use of personal health informatics.

Analysis of the Role of Cytosolic Aminopeptidases in the Generation of MHC-Class I Presented Peptides: a Dissertation

Towne, Charles Fenton 27 February 2006 (has links)
To detect viral infections and tumors, CD8 T lymphocytes monitor cells for the presence of antigenic peptides bound to MHC class I molecules. The majority of MHC class I-presented peptides are generated from the cleavage of cellular and viral proteins by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Many of the oligopeptides produced by this process are too long to stably bind to MHC class I molecules and require further trimming for presentation. Cytosolic aminopeptidases such as leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), which is IFN-inducible, Bleomycin Hydrolase (BH), and puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase (PSA) can trim precursor peptides to mature epitopes and have been thought to play an important role in antigen presentation. To examine the role of these aminopeptidases in generating MHC class I peptides in vivo, we generated mice deficient in LAP or PSA, as well as cell lines deficient in LAP, PSA, or BH. LAP mutant mice and cells are viable and grow normally, whereas PSA mutant mice are smaller than their wild-type and heterozygote littermates, are subfertile as adults, and are subviable as embryos. The trimming of peptides in LAP-deficient cells is not reduced under basal conditions or after stimulation with IFN. Similarly, there is no reduction in presentation of peptides from precursor or full length antigen constructs or in the overall supply of peptides from cellular proteins to MHC class I molecules, even after stimulation with IFN. After viral infection, LAP-deficient mice generate normal CTL responses to seven epitopes from three different viruses. Similarly, PSA deficient mice and BH deficient mice generate normal CTL responses to viral epitopes. These data demonstrate that LAP, BH, and PSA are not essential enzymes for generating most MHC class I-presented peptides and reveal redundancy in the function of cellular aminopeptidases in most cell types.

KRONIKOVÁ, Andrea January 2018 (has links)
The topic of the diploma thesis is The Issue of Presenting New Lexis in Contemporary English Language Textbooks for Czech Secondary Schools. The aim of the theoretical part is to describe the ways we can present new lexis to students in English language classes. This part of the thesis also deals with teaching lexis in accordance with Communicative Approach that is considered to be a basis for modern textbooks in English language classes. Further on, it will supply a range of topics of the lexis defined by Common European Framework of Reference. The theoretical part is also devoted to expected amount of vocabulary when teaching English as a foreign language that are reflected in the Framework Educational Programme. The practical part is based on an analysis of contemporary textbooks in English language classes whose objective is to provide a total number of occurrences showing the new lexis. This part also provides an overview of the ways how the new lexis is presented in textbooks. The last chapter focuses on possible activities that could compensate eventual imperfections concerning the presentation of the new lexis in contemporary textbooks.

[en] The fast-paced development of Information Technology, particularly through the expansion of the Internet, has created a new field of work which has not been yet fully explored by designers. This dissertation points out a few possibilities concerning how designers can introduce themselves on the web, focusing on cyberfolios, that is, sites which represent them in such environment. To accomplish that, aspects of communication in cyberspace and the reaching power of the new media have been taken into account, through the investigation of how professionals interact with cyberfolios, whether as visitors - potential customers - or authors.

Martins, Cristiane Juguero January 2009 (has links)
Since the subject of mental patient presentation, this study intend to ponder about the relationship between subjectivity, psychical suffering and the knowledge built over them. To rescue the history of such clinical device allowed the conception of an important interlocution to the epistemic basement of the two most important areas of knowledge about psychopathologies: psychiatry and psychoanalysis. The necessity of been reflecting about the polemic question that is the patient exposition to an audience, it means, to place it as an object at a show, have allowed the construction of a specific point of view which is fundamental to make possible to reflect about the approach and the severances between these two areas of the knowledge, as so the consequence originating of them. The discussion about the image place and function as regard the relationship between the human been and the language have shown to be in the inn of this question. In this context, the intention is to emphasize the difference that Freud make possible when he derived from Cogito ergo sum to Wo es war soll ich warden. Such movement is what makes possible the ransom of the subject of the unconscious. That is in such direction that Lacan accomplish his patient presentations and makes of this activity the place to reprint Freudian work. In that sense the psychoanalytical patient presentation turns possible the cure direction setting and psychoanalysis transmission.

The spleen is the largest secondary lymphoid organ in human beings and in dogs. In both in human beings and in dogs, the absence of the spleen is associated with increased risk of localized and disseminated infection including overwhelm sepsis. Visceral leishmaniasis and other infections alter the histological structure of the spleen, leading to a disruption of the white pulp microenvironments. Previous works have shown that the disruption of the white pulp structure is more frequent in dogs with laboratorial markers of susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis such as positive spleen culture and negative leishmanin skin test than in animals in which these susceptibility markers were absent. In this study, our goal is to examine the relationship between the histological disorganization of splenic white pulp and severity of visceral leishmaniasis. The samples and data used in this study were collected from 206 stray dogs from an endemic area for visceral leishmaniasis, the city of Jequie (Bahia, Brazil). The animals were examined clinically and ELISA and LST were performed. Splenic aspirates were collected for culture, and fragments of spleen were collected for molecular and morphological studies. The animals were ranked according to the degree of structural organization of splenic white pulp of the spleen in groups (a), well-organized, (b) slightly disordered, (c) moderately extensively disorganized. In relation to the positive in the ELISA with the disorganization of the spleen, conjunctivitis (P = 0.0116) hyperproteinemia (p = 0.021) were more frequent in the group of animals with positive ELISA and disorganized spleen when compared to the other groups. Polisymptomatic animals are more frequent in the group with positive ELISA and spleen type 3 (p = 0.004). Clinical scores attributed to the intensity of conjunctivitis (P <0.05), dermatitis (P <0.05) and lymphadenopathy (P <0.01), alopecia (P <0.01), onychogryphosis (P <0.05 ) were higher in animals with positive ELISA and disorganized spleen than other groups, as well as the number of clinical signs attributable to canine visceral leishmaniasis (p = 0.0014). Regarding the analysis of positive spleen culture together with splenic disorganization, the frequency of polisymptomatic dogs was higher in animals with slightly disordered spleen (P <0.05) and disorganized spleen (P <0.005) than in animals with organized spleen. Alopecia (P <0.01), conjunctivitis (P <0.05), dehydration (P <0.001), dermatitis (P <0.05), onychogryphosis (p <0.01), anemia (P <0.05 ), ulcers (P <0.001) and high clinical score (P <0.001 were more frequent in animals with positive spleen culture and disorganized spleen than in animals with negative culture and organized spleen . In conclusion, dogs with disorganization of the spleen associated with visceral leishmaniasis have more clinical signs and worse clinical status than animals with visceral leishmaniasis, but without disruption of the spleen.

Sebeprezentace umělce v italské malbě 16. století / Study of selfpresentation of artist in the Italian painting of the 16th century

Vítová, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
Study of self-presentation of artist in the Italian painting of the 16th century - abstract Italian art of the 16th century, known as the Cinquecento, is undoubtedly a captivating chapter of art history. No less interesting are the lives of artists from that time, the understanding of self-value and its presentation, creating the artist's identity, i.e. their "artistic self". Within a century we may observe the transformation from a craftsman to an artist, and subsequently artist- the courtier. The main representatives of this "movement", trying to raise the status of arts and artists in the society, were Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. Each represented a different generation of artists; however, figures of both these painters are complemented in a curious way. There are moments when their lives meet and, in a certain way, follow one another. It is one of the reasons, why the connection Vasari-Zuccari is suitable for understanding social situation or the self-presentation of central Italian artists in the 16th century. It is almost as if this duo was representing a fictitious art figure of the Cinquecento, whose life began 1511 (with the birth of Giorgio Vasari) and ended in 1609 (with the death of Federico Zuccari) and by studying this figure we discover the development of artists' self-concept and...

Balancované a téměř balancované prezentace grup z algoritmického pohledu / Balanced and almost balanced group presentations from algorithmic viewpoint

Skotnica, Michael January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis we study algorithmic aspects of balanced group presentations which are finite presentations with the same number of generators and relations. The main motivation is that the decidability of some problems, such as the triviality problem, is open for balanced presentations. First, we summarize known results on decision problems for general finite presen- tations and we show two group properties which are undecidable even for balanced presentations - the property of "being a free group"' and the property of "having a finite presentation with 12 generators". We also show reductions of some graph problems to the triviality problem for group presentations, such as determining whether a graph is connected, k-connected or connected including an odd cycle. Then we show a reduction of the determining whether a graph with the same number of vertices and edges is a cycle to the triviality problem for balanced presentations. On the other hand, there is also a limitation of reduction to balanced presentations. We prove that there is no balanced presentation with two generators a, b|ap(m) bq(m) , ar(m) bs(m) for p(m), q(m), r(m), s(m) ∈ Z[m] which describes the trivial group if and only if m is odd. In the last part of this thesis, we describe a relation between group presentations and topology. In addition,...
