The Effects of Caloric Preload and Dietary Restraint on Smoking and Eating Behavior

Kovacs, Michelle 01 January 2013 (has links)
Abstract Rates of smoking are elevated in eating-disordered populations, especially among females (Pomerleau & Snedecor, 2008; Klesges & Klesges, 1988). Restrained eaters ignore physiological cues of satiation and hunger, and instead attempt to employ cognitive control over decisions to eat. Additionally, they are prone to eat in a disinhibited manner after a salient emotional or food cue interrupts their restraint. This eating style is also associated with increased rates of smoking compared with the general population. Although there is a great deal of literature on the relationship between smoking and eating, the role of eating in momentary decisions regarding smoking remains to be explored. The current study tested whether a food prime, which has been found to elicit disinhibited eating in restrained eaters, could also motivate smoking as an alternative to eating. In a randomized two-arm (Prime/No-Prime) between-subjects design, it was hypothesized that smokers, particularly those high in eating restraint, receiving a food prime would be more likely to smoke than eat when given the option, compared to smokers who did not receive the food prime. Although main effects on smoking variables were not found, restraint status did moderate the effect of the food prime upon latency to first puff, number of puffs, and cigarette craving. Moreover, the moderation effect was reversed upon eating variables, suggesting that after a food prime, weight-control smokers appear to choose to smoke to prevent further food intake. This conclusion was bolstered by the finding that the moderation effect on smoking was further moderated by expectancies regarding the effect of smoking upon appetite and weight. In summary, this study identified psychological mechanisms that appear to underlie the population-based covariance between disordered eating and smoking.

Evaluation of the curing time and other characteristics of prime coats applied to a granular base

Mohan, Gouri 08 July 2011 (has links)
Prime coats have been in use for many decades to help protect the base before the subsequent application of bituminous surface treatments. Prime coat is an application of a low viscosity binder onto the base to help protect the base from moisture, to provide an adequate bond between the bituminous surface coating and the base, to strengthen the base near the surface by binding the fines, and to protect the base from detrimental effects of weather and light traffic until the surface can be constructed. For a prime coat to function efficiently it should penetrate sufficiently into the base and should be cured before the application of subsequent layers. Evaluation of the time required for curing of prime coats and how the curing time depends on various weather parameters has received a lack of attention. In view of this, the time taken for curing of different prime coats and the dependence of curing time on weather parameters was studied. The prime coats most commonly used in Texas were selected for this study, namely; MC-30, EC-30, CSS-1H, SS-1H and AEP. All testing was done in real conditions, that is, samples were prepared and exposed to actual weather conditions. Since each prime coat is chemically very different, they were analyzed separately to determine the minimum curing time. Curing time was calculated in three different weather conditions to understand how the weather affects curing time. Further, two different application methods were used to determine the effect of application method on the curing time. In addition to determining curing times, other important engineering properties of prime coats that determine the performance of prime coats such as strength, permeability and penetration were also studied. Strength and permeability tests were done on cured specimens and the effect of application method on these values was also determined. Strength values were measured using a pocket penetrometer and penetration was determined by using sand penetration tests. A unique ranking system list was developed using curing time, strength, penetration and permeability as the key factors to determine the prime coat which would serve all the intended functions effectively and efficiently. / text

The Representation of Newly Learned Words in the Mental Lexicon

Qiao, Xiaomei January 2009 (has links)
Most research in word recognition uses words that already exist in the reader's lexicon, and it is therefore of interest to see whether newly learned words are represented and processed in the same way as already known words. For example, are newly learned words immediately represented in a special form of lexical memory, or is there a gradual process of assimilation? As for L2 language learners, are newly learned words incorporated into the same processing system that serves L1, or are they represented quite independently? The current study examines this issue by testing for the existence of the Prime Lexicality Effect (PLE) observed in masked priming experiments (Forster & Veres, 1998). Strong form priming was found with nonword primes (e.g., contrapt-CONTRACT), but not with word primes (e.g., contrast-CONTRACT). This effect is generally assumed to result from competition between the prime and the target. So if the readers had been trained to treat "contrapt" as a new word, would it now function like a word and produce much weaker priming? Elgort (2007) demonstrated such an effect with unmasked primes with L2 bilinguals. The current study investigates the PLE in both L1 and L2 bilinguals under different training conditions. When the training program involves mere familiarization (learning to type the words), a PLE was found with visible primes, but not with masked primes, which suggests that unmasked PLE is not the best indicator of lexicalization. In the case of "real" acquisition where the new word is given a definition and a picture of the object it refers to, and learning is spread over two weeks, a clear PLE was obtained. However, when the same experiment was carried out on Chinese-English bilinguals using the same English materials, completely opposite results were obtained. The learning enhanced priming, rather than reducing it, suggesting that the L2 lexicon might differ qualitatively from the L1 lexicon. The implications of these results for competitive theories of lexical access are discussed, and alternative explanations are considered.

Les actions françaises depuis 1854 : analyses et découvertes

Le bris, David 01 February 2011 (has links) (PDF)

On the Characterization of Prime Sets of Polynomials by Congruence Conditions

Suresh, Arvind 01 January 2015 (has links)
This project is concerned with the set of primes modulo which some monic, irreducible polynomial over the integers has a root, called the Prime Set of the polynomial. We completely characterise these sets for degree 2 polynomials, and develop sufficient machinery from algebraic number theory to show that if the Galois group of a monic, irreducible polynomial over the integers is abelian, then its Prime Set can be written as the union of primes in some congruence classes modulo some integer.
