Previous issue date: 2010-03-30 / Since we live in a consumer society, we consider very important to get to know it, which means, to understand better the process of consumption. We try to get to know the receptors/consumers in their daily cultural practices, considering the consumption of the media and the consumption of material/symbolical goods, through the inter-relations communication, reception and consumption. The object of this research are the relations between communication/reception/consumption in three categories of television time slot: news, soap opera and advertising, inserted in the brazilian and portuguese prime time, especially advertising, due to its close relationship with both sides: production and consumption. This research attempts to identify the profile of receptors/consumers “draw” in each of these categories, which means, to understand with whom they dialogue in particular and, secondly, to investigate with the receptors/consumers the appropriations and attribution of meanings to the media categories already established, through the application of questionnaires with open and closed questions and focus group.

Bases aditivas de um ponto de vista topológico e prime gaps de um ponto de vista algébrico / Additive bases from a topological point of view and prime gaps from an algebraic point of viewFerreira, Luan Alberto 28 July 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to present two innovative approaches about two classical subjects on number theory: additive bases and prime gaps. The first topic is studied from a topological point of view, in order to offer a comprehensive treatment and general results on the set of all additive bases, not dealing with one specific additive basis, as usual. By the introduction of a metric, it\'s presented a variety of topological tools that allows to treat problems of difficult direct attack on additive bases through indirect arguments on bases better behaved and sufficiently close to the originally considered. The contribution on the prime gaps subject is performed by the use of algebraic tools instead of analytical methods, as usual. Utilizing techniques from Galois theory and algebraic number theory, it\'s presented a study of the Firoozbakht\'s conjecture, along with some of its consequences if the conjecture is proved

The relationship between bank concentration and the interest rate pass through in selected African countriesMangwengwende, Tadiwanashe Mukudzeyi January 2010 (has links)
Given the importance of monetary policy in the operation of a successful modern economy and the use of official interest rates as tools in its implementation, this study investigates the implications of changing bank concentration on the operation of the Interest Rate Pass Through (IRPT) of official rates to bank lending and deposit rates. This is an issue made more poignant by growing mergers, acquisitions and bank consolidation exercises around the world that have brought interest to their implications for economic performance. However, with contention high in the industrial organisation theory on the likely relationship between bank concentration and the IRPT, and the outcomes of empirical investigations producing conflicting evidence, the desire to investigate the issue in the African context necessitated a thorough empirical investigation of four African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria and Zambia). This study not only extended the investigation of the issue to the African context, but it merged different IRPT measurement techniques that had not been jointly applied to this particular issue, namely; Symmetric and Asymmetric Error Correction Models, Mean Adjustment Lags, Ordinary Least Squares estimations and Autoregressive Distributed Lag models. These measures of the IRPT were compared with three firm concentration ratios on two different levels of analysis, one, over the entire period and, another, through eight year rolling windows. The results reveal that bank concentration can sometimes be related to the speed and magnitude of the IRPT but that these relationships are not consistent amongst the countries, over the entire sample period or across the two levels of analysis, suggesting reasons why empirical results have arrived at contrasting conclusions. The results revealed more evidence of a relationship between bank concentration and the magnitude of the IRPT than between bank concentration and the speed of the IRPT. Furthermore, where relationships were identified there was evidence supporting both the structure conduct performance hypothesis and the competing efficient market hypothesis as the true representation of the relationship between bank concentration and the IRPT. The key implication of the result for African countries is that increased bank concentration through bank consolidation programmes should not be automatically regarded as detrimental to the effective implementation of monetary policy through the IRPT. Consequently, banking sector regulation need not stifle bank consolidation and growth to preserve monetary policy effectiveness. Rather, since the relationship cannot be neatly represented by a single theory or hypothesis each country must determine its own interaction between bank concentration and its IRPT before policies regarding the banking sector concentration and effective monetary policy, through the use of official interest rates, are determined.

The main goal of this research is to clarify the actual limits of subliminal elements in advertising persuasiveness. For that matter, the AIDA model was used combined with scientific studies in order to provide better understading of an individual\'s reaction to subliminal stimuli used as primes for regular, conscious stimuli.

Factoring Semiprimes Using PG2N Prime Graph Multiagent SearchWilson, Keith Eirik 01 January 2011 (has links)
In this thesis a heuristic method for factoring semiprimes by multiagent depth-limited search of PG2N graphs is presented. An analysis of PG2N graph connectivity is used to generate heuristics for multiagent search. Further analysis is presented including the requirements on choosing prime numbers to generate 'hard' semiprimes; the lack of connectivity in PG1N graphs; the counts of spanning trees in PG2N graphs; the upper bound of a PG2N graph diameter and a conjecture on the frequency distribution of prime numbers on Hamming distance. We further demonstrated the feasibility of the HD2 breadth first search of PG2N graphs for factoring small semiprimes. We presented the performance of different multiagent search heuristics in PG2N graphs showing that the heuristic of most connected seedpick outperforms least connected or random connected seedpick heuristics on small PG2N graphs of size N

On Prime Generation Through Primitive Divisors Of Recurrence SequencesRussell, Richard 01 January 2006 (has links)
We examine results concerning the generation of primes in certain types of integer sequences. The sequences discussed all have a connection in that each satisfies a recurrence relation. Mathematicians have speculated over many centuries that these sequences contain an infinite number of prime terms, however no proof has been given as such. We examine a less direct method of showing an infinitude of primes in each sequence by showing that the sequences contain an infinite number of terms with primitive divisors.
