Music for Solo Bassoon and Bassoon Quartet by Pulitzer Prize Winners: A Guide to Performance

Worzbyt, Jason Walter 05 1900 (has links)
The Pulitzer Prize in Music has been associated with excellence in American composition since 1943, when it first honored William Schuman for his Secular Cantata No. 2: A Free Song. In the years that followed, this award has recognized America's most eminent composers, placing many of their works in the standard orchestral, chamber and solo repertoire. Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Walter Piston and Elliott Carter are but a few of the composers who have been honored by this most prestigious award. Several of these Pulitzer Prize-winning composers have made significant contributions to the solo and chamber music repertories of the bassoon, an instrument that had a limited repertoire until the beginning of the twentieth century. The purpose of this project is to draw attention to the fact that America's most honored composers have enlarged and enriched the repertoire of the solo bassoon and bassoon quartet. The works that will be discussed in this document include: Quartettino for Four Bassoons (1939) - William Schuman, Three Inventions for Solo Bassoon (1962) - George Perle, Canzonetta (1962) - John Harbison, Metamorphoses for Bassoon Solo (1991) - Leslie Bassett and “How like pellucid statues, Daddy. Or like a . . . an engine” (1994) - John Corigliano. Each chapter will include a brief biography of the composer, a historical perspective of where that composition lies in relation to their other works, background information about the work, a formal analysis and suggestions for performance.

Betydelsen av ett Nobelpris : Hur Boris Pasternaks Nobelpris i litteratur bidrog till att sprida hans författarskap / The Effects of a Nobel Prize : How Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize in Literature Contributed to Disseminating his Authorship

Petersson, Isak January 2014 (has links)
This study explores and sheds light upon the relations between Russian author Boris Pasternak’s Nobel Prize in Literature (1958) and the subsequent proliferation of his authorship. The study’s aim is partly to define the Nobel Prize and its role as a distributor of culture, but also to problematize the complex nature of cultural prizes and their influence over cultural production. In order to do this two areas have been analysed: Pasternak’s publication in Swedish and his occurrence in Swedish daily press between 1953–2013.   The analysis exemplifies the strong consecrating power of the Nobel prize, as well as its ability to, in a longer perspective, solidify an author into a literary canon. In line with English’s theory on how cultural prizes have come to serve as forums for capital intraconversion, it is also evident in Pasternak’s example how several of the involved parties have capitalized on the prize by trading cultural, economic and medial capital. Furthermore, the analysis concretizes how the cultural prize apparatus produces and reinforces cultural value, and consequently not only influences the cultural scene, but also has the potential to sway public political opinion.

Numerické modelování soutěží o dvě ceny s asymetrickými hráči / Numerical Modelling of Two-Prize Asymmetric Contests

Matysková, Ludmila January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents an analysis on a class of asymmetric imperfectly discrim- inating multi-prize contests with the aim to investigate when more than one prize becomes optimal prize allocation if the average effort is to be maximized. We present n-person model with heterogeneous contestants who compete for two, possibly different, prizes. The contestants may differ in their relative abil- ities, i.e., parameters affecting their probabilities to win either of the prizes. Two different numerical methods for finding pure strategy Nash equilibria are employed. Depending on particular distributions of the abilities, we find two possible scenarios when the second prize becomes optimal. Furthermore, we ad- dress an issue of existence and uniqueness of a pure strategy Nash equilibrium with respect to the returns to scale in effort parameter. 公平交易法對於事業贈品贈獎促銷行為規範之研究 / A study of Regulation of conduct under the Fair Trade Act for the enterprise's campaigns of promotional gift-away and awards

丁丞康, Ting, Cheng Kang (Robin) Unknown Date (has links)
The intention to conduct the promotion of gift-away (gifts) and/or awards (prizes) is mainly to maximize the profits for the enterprises. In addition, it is also in the consideration where to solicit the customers to deal the business transactions from the competitors. The enterprise provides promotional gift and/or prizes of which the values are extremely high, and its initiative in origin is to kick-out the competitor from the market, or prevent any new marketers’ entries. These behaviors are so called “unfair” and shall be governed by the Fair Trade Act. In addition, the objectives of conducting gifts and/or prizes promotions are mainly to promote the sales by discounting the selling prices under the economics essential. Once the value of the gifts and/or prizes is extremely high, it would be potentially involve of the unfair competition. This study is made in accordance with Fair Trade Act in the area of enterprise’s campaigns of promotional gifts and/or prizes. The Saltire Society Literary Awards, 1936-2015 : a cultural history

Marsden, Stevie L. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents a history of the Saltire Society Literary Awards and examines their status and role within Scotland’s literary and publishing culture. The Society was founded at a critical inter-war period during which Scottish writers, artists and cultural commentators were re-imagining Scotland’s political and cultural identity. The Society, therefore, was a product of this reformative era in Scotland’s modern history. The Society’s identity and position within this inter- and post-war reformation is reflected in the Literary Awards, which are a means by which the Society attempts to accomplish some of its constitutional aims. The purpose of this thesis is three-fold. Firstly, it has filled a conspicuous gap in modern Scottish cultural history by offering a historically accurate description of the founding of the Saltire Society in 1936 and the development of the Society’s Literary Awards up until 2015. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how the Society’s Literary Awards function in relation to key critical discourses pertinent to contemporary book award culture, such as forms of capital, national identity and gender. Finally, this thesis proffers an in-depth analysis of book award judgment culture. Through an analysis of the linguistic and social interactions between Saltire Society Literary Award judges, this thesis is the first study of its kind which considers exactly how literary award judging panels facilitate the judgement process. What this thesis reveals is how, despite often being plagued by problems regarding finances and personnel, the Society’s Literary Awards have endured as a key feature of Scottish literary and publishing culture, so much so that they are now the only series of awards dedicated to awarding Scottish fiction, non-fiction, poetry and first books, as well as academic history and research books. Due to the persistence and enthusiasm of the Society’s administrators and literary award judges the awards have continued to thrive and evolve to accommodate developments and demands within Scottish literary culture.
