Porting XDtools from NeOn Toolkit to Protégé / Portning av XDtools från NeOn Toolkit till Protégé

Hecktor, Ylva January 2014 (has links)
XDtools is a plugin originally used in the NeOn Toolkit ontology editor. XDtools is used as a tool for the ontology engineer when designing new ontologies or to add new parts to existing ontologies. The XDtools plugin was partially ported to another ontology editor, Protégé. This thesis describes the implementation and design choices made during the work with porting the plugin. A description of the parts that have been ported can be found in the report. It also contains the result of the testing and user study made after the implementation. Conclusions of those results and proposed changes to the plugin are also found in the report.

Prototype system for automatic ontology construction

Ludovic, Jean-Louis January 2007 (has links)
Though a constantly increasing number of ontologies are now available on the Internet, the ontology construction process remains generally a manual task, so consequently an effort demanding task. As no unified ontology construction method is available in the literature, researchers started investigating different frameworks for automatically generating ontologies and, therefore shorten the time required for their construction. This master’s thesis presents a prototype system for automatic construction of ontology, based on ontology design patterns and unstructured texts, such as natural language texts. The use of ontology design patterns allow constructing well structured ontologies and reducing the demand of knowledge experts. A difference between our prototype system and the systems presented in the literature is, the possibility to increase accuracy of the generated ontology by selecting the more relevant terms and associations from the unstructured text and match them against the ontology design patterns. Also, a matching score is introduced to define the level of similarity between the terms extracted and the ontology design patterns. By setting a threshold value on the matching score, the relevant ontology design patterns are selected and used for the ontology construction process. The ontology construction framework used by the prototype system has been developed by the research group in Information Engineering of the School of Engineering, Jönköping University.

“You Know You Work in Tech When the Toilet Seat is Up” : An Investigation of Female Protégés Working in Swedish IT Organizations and How They Use Mentorship to Advance in Their Careers

Lindström, Sofia, Bartoschek, Malin January 2023 (has links)
Background and Research Purpose: Women working in male-dominated environments face experiences that are unique. In Sweden the number of women working in the IT field grows, and so should the representation of female managers and female seniors. But does it? The extensive underrepresentation of females in IT continues to add to the inequality between genders and the marginalization of female managers and seniors in Swedish society. For many individuals, being successful and developing in their careers is a common goal (Fagenson, 1989) and one method in particular is through mentorship (Kram, 1983).  Studies of protégés' experiences for career advancement especially in the field of mentoring in IT in Swedish organizations are limited, especially observing it from the female perspective. Women face gender-related interpersonal and organizational barriers which prevent them from attaining mentors as well as opportunities for learning. The aim of this study was to investigate women's careers, mentoring, and the barriers to their career progression from the mentee's perspective. Research Question: How are females working in the IT industry using mentorship as a tool for their career advancement? We used two supplementary research questions to assist in identifying additional information, thereby we wanted to further explore the interdependence between female and male mentors, and junior and senior mentors.   Method: The following study is of exploratory nature, thus, we used the qualitative research design to  collect data through semi-structured interviews. 15  participants helped us explore the experiences of female employees in the IT environment and contributed to a better understanding of a mentor's involvement, their proactive responses, and strategies that aided their mentee's careers. These interviews were performed with employees from 10 different Swedish IT companies.   Conclusion: We developed a model called the mentor relationship matrix, as we found mentoring traits that can be linked to male and female mentors as well as to seniority and juniority. We additionally discovered that mentorship can have a dark side. Our analysis shows that mentors can enable career advancement, though strategies which differ depending on the mentoring liaison and the mentor's personality. In conclusion, we discovered that despite gender, the personality of the mentor is most important for a successful mentoring relationship. Practical Implications: Emerging from our findings, women pursuing careers in IT can utilize our matrix to categorize their mentors and adapt to their surroundings. We want to encourage mentees to become lifelong learners, master speaking up and making their voices heard as well as cultivate a support system in the workplace.

The Impact of Student-Led Lactation Education on Self-Efficacy in Clinical Simulation: An Integrative Literature Review

Yu, Kaitlyn Flores 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Simulation is a critical component of nursing education. It provides a safe environment to practice and evaluate skills, supplements clinical hours, and removes barriers to a well-rounded education. Nurses are expected to be educators as part of our scope of practice, and simulation can facilitate this. One topic of nursing importance is lactation education, as breastfeeding has been shown to have multiple benefits for both mother and baby. National rates of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months do not currently meet CDC recommendations. The pedagogy known as the Protégé Effect suggests that learning can be improved through teaching. Breastfeeding is a topic that inherently involves patient education but is currently given minimal attention in most nursing curricula. The purpose of this thesis is primarily to determine whether breastfeeding education within simulation improves student self-efficacy and secondarily, to explore the ramifications on clinical performance. A literature review was conducted across CINAHL, MEDLINE, Applied Science & Technology Source, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar to find studies comparing breastfeeding education to student self-efficacy within a simulated environment. Inclusion criteria included medical and nursing students at undergraduate- and graduate-level education, full text, written in English, and any student-led teaching opportunities about lactation and breastfeeding. After critical appraisal, 8 qualitative and quantitative articles were included in the study. Current literature strongly suggests breastfeeding simulations improve self-efficacy, but the findings are preliminary in nature. More research is needed. Including breastfeeding education in simulation can better prepare nursing students to assume their role as educators.

Stenling, Nicole, Wetterström, Teodor January 2016 (has links)
Knowledge  sharing  has  earned  a  more  central  role  in  organizations  strive  to      achievecompetitive advantage. Still, many organizations fail to make full potential of knowledge sharing initiative, highlighting the demand for further studies in the area to increase the understanding of knowledge sharing within organizations. This study therefore examines how knowledge sharing is affected within mentoring through a case study of qualitative nature where interviews have been conducted with consultants of a global IT company whom in various ways are involved in a mentoring program. This study seeks to understand how mentoring of new hires works in practice and how knowledge sharing on an individual level is affected within the given context, as well as how the structure of formal mentoring might affect knowledge sharing between the mentor and protégé. The study starts off by depicting mentoring and knowledge sharing based on previous literature. The mentoring literature that is presented offers support to analyse the structure of the studied mentoring program and its significance. A model is thereafter presented within  the knowledge sharing section with the purpose of acting as an analytical lens when processing the empirical findings, the study has generated. The results show that knowledge sharing on an individual level within mentoring of new hires is affected by the organizational value associated with the knowledge being shared. It also shows that one motivational factor that affect the sharing is whether or not the participants are able to realize incentives associated to sharing knowledge and that mentoring offers both formal and informal opportunities to share knowledge, which implied a positive impact on knowledge sharing on an individual level. In addition, the results imply that an organizational culture impact the employees’ norms and values, and therefore their actions. An organizational culture promoting knowledge sharing is thereby considered having a positive effect on knowledge sharing on the individual level within mentoring. Another important finding is that the structure of formal mentoring programs, is affecting multiple aspects of the knowledge sharing   between   mentor   and   protégé.   However,   the   study   cannot   suggest   that  theorganizational culture is significantly affected.
