Psalm 110:1 in Confessional Material in Corpus Paulinum: Cultural and Religious Context

Burnett, David Clint January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Pheme Perkins / Psalm 110:1 was not a Second Temple messianic proof-text. Yet, it became the early Christian text par excellence for articulating exaltation Christology: Jesus was exalted to God’s right hand (Acts 2:33, 34-35; 5:31; 7:55-56; Rom 8:34; Col 3:1; Eph 1:20; 1 Pet 3:22; Heb 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2) and κύριος of the cosmos (Phil 2:9-11). Therefore, this unprecedented and singular use of Ps 110:1 by early Christians requires an explanation. This dissertation argues that the unparalleled Christian use of Ps 110:1 is indebted to a Greco-Roman royal ideological concept: rulers as sharers of divine/sacred space, which consisted of three elements: temple sharing, throne sharing, and joint temples of imperials and gods. Greek cities and Roman period provinces made autocrats sharers of sacred space to show appreciation for concrete royal benefactions and to acknowledge the piety of monarchs and divine approval of their regimes. Early Christians adopted two of these practices—temple sharing and throne sharing—for similar purposes, creating a unique variant of the Greco-Roman royal practice and using scripture to justify it (Ps 110:1). Consequently, early Christian use of Ps 110:1, exaltation Christology, and Jesus’s Lordship are indebted to royal messianism. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Based on philological studies of ancient Hebrew a new translation of this Psalm is presented, as literal as possible. The study covers the historical and cultural context of the Psalm 110 as well as the theological thoughts related to the king and the Lord, God of Israel. Through the principle of canonical exegesis, the study includes the observance of parallels between biblical texts, which explain each other. Psalm 110 will also be researched within the texts of the New Testament, thereby demonstrating its importance for the reflection about Jesus Christ / O objetivo da presente dissertação de mestrado é analisar exegeticamente as dimensões teológicas do Salmo 110.

The chapters follow the poem in stanzas subdivision. Analyzing thus passage by passage, first giving attention to the Hebrew text, wherein, from the philological studies, is translated into Portuguese, in the most possible literal way. Then, studies are dedicated to stylistic elements observation, for example, the various parallels or the stanzas formation, and the latter are small literary units. Finally, the research that has been presented here focuses on the various elements of the likely historical context and theological dimensions transmitted by 45 Psalm. In particular, the study is concerned to accept the canonical exegesis principles, through parallelism observance present in Hebrew Bible, starting with the idea that the biblical texts explain themselves mutually / O objetivo da presente Dissertação de Mestrado é analisar, exegeticamente, o poema presente no Salmo 45, sobretudo sua beleza literária, seu contexto histórico e suas dimensões teológicas.

Výklad a interpretace biblického textu / Psalm 118: Exegesis and Interpretation

Šenkyřík, Jáchym January 2017 (has links)
The thesis Psalm 118: Exegesis and Interpretation deals with the exegesis of a biblical text Psalm 118 (LXX 117). It approaches the psalm from various perspectives (both synchronic and diachronic) and giving compact exegesis. Thus the first focus of the thesis is the text itself, its different variants and its conceivable translation. Then, there is the stylistic-poetic analysis showing stylistic and poetic elements and also the connections between expressions of the psalm. Thus it is possible to understand the logic flow of the text, its structure. Then the thesis determines the genre of the psalm in order to make clear in what way and form the psalm expresses itself. Thanks to that it is possible to do more elaborate exegesis of several motives and poetic images that can be found in the text. Another perspective of the exegesis of the psalm is to consider its musical denotation. Next part is concerned by how the text fits within the context of the Psalter and the Hebrew bible and also the outline of its basic ways in its history of influence.

The Last Three Four-part Female Part-songs by Franz Schubert

Tseng, Ya-yi 08 September 2000 (has links)
The women¡¦s chorus has been a minor category in the bulk of western music history. It was not until the nineteenth century that a female chorus had the opportunity to perform as the same way that a male or mixed chorus had. Only then, did composers start to compose part-songs for female chorus, and Schubert is one of the pioneers. He composed nine pieces for female chorus. Two of them were done as assignments while a student when he was young (1812). Three short pieces were finished in 1815-16. Even in these early pieces his sensitivity to German text and gift for setting the text to music are clearly shown. In 1820-27, Schubert finished four female choral works. Three of them were four-part-- ¡§Psalm 23¡¨, ¡§Gott in der Natur¡¨, ¡§Stänchen¡¨. These three pieces are the best in all Schubert¡¦s female choral works. The tonality is more fully developed, and the length is almost four times longer than before. More imitation is used, composed with homophonic texture than is used in the first five pieces. Schubert had demonstrated a strong desire to express the text freely with all types of musical techniques from the early Romantic Period. This master¡¦s thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter offers some historical background and can be divided into three sections. First is a concise report about female chorus¡¦s development in western music history. The second part discusses the definition of 19th century style and how the contemporary background influenced the part-songs. The third section gives a general review of Schubert¡¦s female choral works. Chapter Three is a detailed analysis of the final three four-part female works. Derived from Chapter Three (i. e. based on the analysis), Chapter four proposes a teaching procedure when a director or a school teacher wants to perform any of these three numbers. Some performance considerations and conducting suggestions are also included. The final Chapter is conclusion for the entire research. Two appendixes are included: one is the translations and IPA phonetics for the German texts; the other is a list of the publishers for Schubert female chorus works.

Psalmopskrifte, lofprysing en die titel van die psalmbundel / van Rensburg F.J.

Van Rensburg, Frederik Jakobus January 2011 (has links)
The Problem statement which was examined in this study is the following: Throughout the history the accuracy and historical value of the Psalm headings were questioned. Translations of the Psalm headings that later on developed for example the Septuagint, the Vulgate and the Peshitta is generally more extended than the Hebrew text. The use of the Grammatical–Historical method shows that the Psalm headings are authorative and that they are part of the Canonical text of the Hebrew Bible. Thorough word study by the method of Verhoef (1973), Hayes & Holladay (2007) and Kaiser (2007) of certain terms was important to note in the naming of the Psalter. This word study was approached through the Grammatical–Historical method. It was further necessary to study the importance of Psalm 145 in the whole of the Psalter, because Psalm 145 is the only Psalm with the heading: תְּהִלָּה . Other Psalm headings were studied and historical information was compared with other parts of Scripture. This study was approached Revelation–Historical. Further on it was necessary to do a comparative study between the Psalm headings of the Masoretic text, the Septuagint and the writings of Qumran to determine the authority of the Psalm headings. A study of contents about the element of praise was also necessary as Van Rooy (2008) explained, because the Psalter shows a development from lament to praise. It is also connected with the title that was originally been given to the Psalter by the Jews. / Thesis (M.Th. (Old Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

In this celestial meeting, one god rises up and accuses the other gods of neglecting the weaker. The gods are condemned to death and the gods who presides the gods assembly nominates another god to govern all nations of the world. The council of gods scene and the decrees promulgated in these meetings in the celestial world are recurrent in other Ancient Near East literature. In the religious literature found in Ugarit, ancient Canaanite city, El, Baal, Asherah and other deities joined to discuss issues related to the order of cosmos. In this sense, Psalm 82 share elements of the Canaanite religiosity and culture.
