Exploring the Hegemonic Oppression (silencing) of people by 'Psy-Professionals' in Mental Health : A narrative analysis of a case study to examine how Intersectionality can inform change

Stangl, Michaela January 2020 (has links)
This thesis investigates the everyday oppression of people with experiences of trauma and ‘mental illness’ through hegemonic discourses by psy-professionals within mental health care. The research is built around a case study of a narrative of a professional relationship between a social worker and a person experiencing mental distress. Using intersectionality as a theoretical and methodological framework it attempts to show how Madness is constructed as well as to identify how mechanisms of discrimination and oppression are interconnected simultaneously. Madness as a stand-alone category and at the same time an influence to gender, race and class. By applying narrative analysis and intersectionality systems of inequality can be made visible which need to be understood to bring about change and include any potential of meaning making processes by those affected through trauma or mental distress.

Inclusão social pelo trabalho: estudo comparativo entre as políticas públicas de saúde mental do Brasil e da Inglaterra / Labour social inclusion: comparative study of mental health public policies in Brazil and England

Santos, Ligia Bugelli Hermano 22 June 2016 (has links)
One of the basic principles of World Health Organisation is to affirm that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease. The lack of access to a comprehensive health care is increased, when the indi-vidual is out of productive economic game. The several treaties to affirm and ensure the political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights of humans, show that international or-ganizations are working to build guidelines that ensure the citizens survivel basic rights, anywhere in the world. Subsequently, these guidelines were incorporated, based on the cultures of each country and became laws. The labour is an individual right of every hu-man being, to reach their financial support. Due to stigma and prejudice, mental disorders individuals are out of this economic game. The Brazil encountered in Solidary Economy a mechanism to socially include people with mental disorders. The Solidary Economy has its origins based on nineteenth-century English social cooperatives, which was configured as a mode of work organisation opposite to capitalist mode of production. Its principles are identified with the principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation, since the activity of gen-erating income is identifield as a possibility of social inclusion, aim at the emancipated work and reconstruction of full citizenship of the subject. Considering that a large propor-tion of mental disorders individuals are outside the economic game, this study had the motivation to analyze how is the social inclusion policy for this public labour, in Brazilian and England setting. Objectives: recording, analyze and correlate the different llaws, de-crees, resolutions, and administrative rules of the Brazilian and England existing official records, about people with mental disorders, with a focus on the subject of social inclusion through labour. Method: this study is qualitative study, using documentary analysis to build a comparison of the laws, strategies and guidelines that England and Brazil used to socially include people with mental disorders, through labour. Data sources were: laws, ordinances, decrees, declarations, resolutions and existing conferences. The research aimed to analyse official documents detailing the evolution of legislation and public poli-cies of mental health in each country, focusing on labour social inclusion, organizing and interpreting the resulting documents from the theoretical concept that was defined. Re-sults: the analysis of the selected documents, showed the association between the pillars that promotes Psychosocial Rehabilitation through labour, in the Brazilian and English scenario, and allowed the construction of a conceptual framework that characterizes the main focuses of two identified approaches. In England, social inclusion is made in formal and competitive labor market, through a program called: Individual Placement and Sup-port (IPS), mainly focused on the economy. In Brazil, labour social inclusion for mental disorders individuals is guided by the Solidary Economy, through the cooperative and sol-idary economy enterprises. This approach is mostly guided by a social focus. Conclu-sions: this research aimed to perform an innovative study about public policy concepts of mental health and the interaction with the labor activity, in line with mental health promo-tion, psychosocial rehabilitation, income generation and autonomy for mental health ser-vices users. Taking the perspective of Human Rights and Psychosocial Rehabilitation and understanding that work is a legitimate right of every citizen, this research could contribute to a better understanding of the Solidary Economy in a global context and to the improve-ment of public policies and social practices, focusing in the labour social inclusion for peo-ple with mental disorders.
