No. of bitstreams: 1 silvana_maria_santana.pdf: 882467 bytes, checksum: 4c32b909d6f55885240df6add65a2108 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-11-22 / The present study aims investigating the psychological clinic action within the scope of Public Policies of resocialization of adult prison population. For this purpose, it characterizes the prison institution and the process of incarceration, also the description of Public Policies of resocialization in the prison system of Pernambuco. This context is the basis for comprehending the psychologists'actions, having been gathered their narratives, aiming to establish a dialog with the actual policies. The insertion of psychologists in this field of work, in Brazil, occurred in the decade of 1970, in forensic psychiatric hospitals to psychological reports, but became permanent in 1984 due to the Law of Penal Executions which requires the participation of these professionals in the Classification Technical Committee to perform the toxicological examination. According to the Ministry of Labour and the Federal Council of Psychology, this area of work belongs to the Forensic Psychology and is not limited to psychological evaluation, albeit it is still hegemonic nationwide. The psychologists, in this context, face demands aimed at reintegrating men and women to the society, which requires engagement and assisting from psychology in the state policies for this population. The fieldwork has been done in both a women's and a men's PU (Prison Unit); we made use of the cartographic method, in that it allows us to trace the experiences, narrated by the participating professionals and the involvement of the researcher in these cases. The results has been analyzed making use of understanding hermeneutics and the dialog with the diversity of this field, which is juridical, social and clinical. We concluded that the activities developed by these psychologists in those PUs, when possible, occurred in poor conditions with no decent place, both physical and subjective, to the psychological science and are hampered by the growing precarious state of the labour ties, the power relations haracterised by legal hierarchy, the powerlessness against and the violence and violations of fundamental human rights. The successful contribuitions are quite particular and are lost amid the lack of a integrated project between various areas of knowledge and denounce as well the lack of a resocialization project that actually meet the expectations of the convicted, the justice and society. This scenario shows the pressing need of public policies that meet the intended resocialization goals.

An educational psychological perspective on partner roles in heterosexual marriages

Phetla, Rabi Joseph 11 1900 (has links)
Contemporary and traditional sex roles differ in clarity. As such couples find it difficult to share these sex roles because of beliefs and attitudes they hold about them. In an attempt to generate guidelines with regard to the complementary sharing of these roles, sex differences and the nature of sex roles were discussed. Although men and women are similar in some respects, they however have fundamental unchangeable differences. Sex roles on the other hand, have changed drastically over the years. Data was gathered through the use of interviews. The result of this study indicates that men and women hold conflicting beliefs and attitudes concerning the sharing of sex roles. A set of guidelines have been formulated to assist couples to share their sex roles in a complementary way so as to make their homes authentic primary educational environments.. / Psychology of Education / M. The effects of gender, ethnicity and socio-economic status on coping with HIV

Oppenheimer, Marian Ehrich, 1969- 05 October 2012 (has links)
The study examined the correlations between gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, self-reported mode of exposure to HIV, the types of coping strategies utilized, social support, perceived stress, preventive resources, depression, and disease progression among 79 HIV+ patients, eleven of which were Spanish speaking, seen at a federally and city funded HIV/AIDS clinic. The first aim was to demonstrate that there is a linear relationship between gender, ethnicity, the manner in which one copes with the HIV infection (utilizing problem-focused strategies versus emotion-focused strategies), and the progression of HIV as measured by each participant’s CD4 count. The second aim of the study was to show that the higher the frequency of seeking medical support at the HIV/AIDS clinic, the lower the rate of HIV progression as measured by the CD4 count. The third aim of the study was to demonstrate that there is a significant difference in the types of coping strategies utilized by differing ethnicities to combat the stress related to HIV. Findings indicated that among the 78 participants who completed the surveys, housing status (homeless versus having a home), intravenous drug use (IVDU), Escape-Avoidance behavior, Positive Reappraisal, the perception of having familial support, and the perception of mastery were all significantly correlated with the difference in the CD4 count initially obtained at the time of the interview and the CD4 count that was obtained again 3 through 15 months later. Of the 17 of the total 78 participants who did not return to the clinic consistently, housing status was found to be significantly correlated with the difference in the CD4 count initially obtained at the time of the interview and the CD4 count that was obtained again 3 through 8 months later. Of the 61 of the 78 participants who did return to the clinic consistently, IVDU, the perception of family as supportive, the perception of having sources of comfort, the perception of the ability to scan the environment as a resource, the perception that one recognizes the opportunity to prevent stress, perceived control, the perception that one has control, the perception that one has efficacy, the perception that one can master tasks, and the perception that one can maintain self-direction were all significantly correlated with the difference in the CD4 count initially obtained at the time of the interview and the CD4 count that was obtained again 9 through 15 months later. Therefore, there was a significant difference between those patients who returned for consistent medical treatment at the clinic versus those who attended the clinic infrequently. The issues pertaining to the adherence of medical treatment as well as attempts to buffer the positive coping strategies that facilitate adherence are of critical importance to current prevention measures. In addition, it was found that there were significant differences in the manner in which differing ethnicities coped with the stressors related to HIV. The study revealed that among the 25 black men and women, coping by accepting responsibility, and coping by positively reappraising situations were predictive of ethnicity. Among the 21 Hispanic men and women and the 31 white men and women who participated in the study, none of the coping strategies were predictive of ethnicity. The identification of the differential manners in which each ethnicity copes with the stressors related to HIV has the potential to bolster both HIV treatment and prevention efforts. Further research needs to be conducted in order to further explore these important issues. / text

Borderland Journeys: A Layered Autoethnography

Bankert-Countryman, Janice Elizabeth 25 February 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The collection of pages spread before you now, this story-thesis, is a collection of stories about my journey from cult member to the place in life I am now, stories about those stories, and stories about the people who lived or read them, talked about them, and were changed by the tellings. Most importantly, the goal of this story-thesis is to illustrate how the process of story-making and -telling changes how we interpret our identities and our lifeworlds. I argue that the stories that we share change our identities, and I also argue that how we perceive our identity and the identities of others affects the stories that we share.

The culture component: its influences in the creation of an L2 identity and the acquisition of Spanish as a second language

Sutherlin, Lindsey Dru January 2014 (has links)

Communication dynamics in producing effective patient care : a case study at Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Moola, Sabihah 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Interactive health communication between the health-care professional (HCP) and patient relationship for diabetes health-care positively contributes to patient-centred care. Hence individual patient concerns are addressed and catered for in the medical system. The purpose of this study was to analyse in-depth how HCP-patient relationships and HCP-HCP teamwork dynamics positively contribute to effective diabetes patient care and treatment adherence. Different health communication models and theories were reviewed and a conceptual framework was developed from the literature. A qualitative case study approach was used to collect data at Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic. Data was collected using three different methods, namely in-depth interviews with HCPs and patients individually, observations conducted at the clinic analysing both the HCPs and patients, and finally, documentation that emerged as a third data collection method where patient files and diabetes educational material were analysed at the clinic. Triangulation by means of the three methods ensured that reliable, valid and credible data was collected in the field. Diabetes health-care and treatment management are affected by the social context/social system which includes family and culture. These social factors are acknowledged as core in the literature. However, a single comprehensive health communication model did not exist solely in this regard. The data indicated that at the Stanger Hospital’s diabetes clinic, patient-centred (individual tailor-made treatment plans) care was only implemented after patients had defaulted treatment for reasons linked to their social circumstances. The findings of the study indicate that teamwork was favoured in the HCP-HCP relationship at the diabetes clinic, and that this made a positive contribution to effective diabetes patient care. HCPs were overburdened at the clinic since patient numbers were high and there were staff shortages. The patients’ empirical data indicated that interactive communication positively contributed to their medical concerns being catered for at the diabetes clinic, but this tended to occur only after non-adherence. Patients required care and support from HCPs in order to learn to accept diabetes and manage their illness. / Sociology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Sociology)
