Leadership Styles and Employee Motivation in Qatar Organizations

Organizations in the public sector in Qatar have a reputation for delivering inefficient services. Leaders lack an understanding of motivational factors affecting public sector employee performance. The purpose of this correlational research was to examine the relationship between leadership styles and employee motivation in public companies in Qatar. The independent variables were the transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant leadership styles. The dependent variable was employee motivation. The moderator variables were employee age and salary. A sample of 92 employees from 4 public sector organizations in Qatar responded to the online survey. The full range leadership theory served as the theoretical foundation for describing leadership styles of managers as perceived by employees. Self-determination theory served as the theoretical foundation for describing employee motivation. A hierarchical regression model was developed, and results of the study indicated a significant positive correlation between transformational and transactional leadership styles used by managers and employee motivation levels, with a standardized beta coefficient (β) above 0.6, and a significant negative correlation between passive-avoidant leadership style and employee motivation levels, with a standardized beta coefficient (β) below -0.57. Age moderated the relationship between transformational leadership and motivation. Salary moderated the relationship between passive-avoidant leadership and motivation. Leaders of public organizations in Qatar may use the results of this study to better support employee motivation and engagement. The study may contribute to social change by helping managers improve organizational performance and increase efficiency levels.

A framework for the integration of skilled / professional self-initiated expatrites into Qatari organisations

The main research problem in this study was to identify a framework that can be utilised for the integration of skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) into Qatari organisations. The main research problem gave rise to six sub-problems that were addressed through the following actions: A literature study was conducted to explore what the existing literature revealed about facilitating successful expatriate integration. In particular, the theoretical guidelines for expatriate recruitment and selection, orientation and cross-cultural integration were presented and discussed. Special attention was given to community embeddedness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten members from the sample group. These were undertaken to obtain their views on the expectations that their organisations had of them upon their arrival in Qatar, as well as on what they felt made it easy or difficult for them to adjust. Subsequently, a structured survey questionnaire was developed using the theoretical guidelines from the literature review and the insights gained from the semi-structured interviews. The survey was conducted in Qatar and administered to 102 skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates from diverse backgrounds and three work sectors, namely: healthcare, education and aviation. The final sample size was 94 due to eight questionnaires not being completed properly. The results from the empirical study revealed a gap between theoretical guidelines/ best practices and the recruitment and selection, orientation and cross-cultural integration practices at the respondents’ organisations. The knowledge gained from the existing literature and from the quantitative and qualitative results of the empirical study were combined and developed into a framework for the integration of skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates into Qatari organisations (refer to Table 5.35). Areas that were identified for improvement related to issues such as the need for Qatari organisations to: provide SIEs with more comprehensive information regarding the role that they will play as knowledge workers with regard to the development/training of Qatari nationals; implement a more comprehensive recruitment, selection and orientation process, and implement a more robust set of strategies to enhance the cross-cultural integration of their expatriate workers. Globalisation has fuelled organisations and countries towards building and/or strengthening knowledge-based economies. However in order to build competitive, knowledge-based economies, organisations and countries require skilled/professional workers. Skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates can provide Qatar with a pipeline of knowledge workers to support the growth of their emerging knowledge-based economy. As such, a framework that will enhance the integration of self-initiated expatriates into Qatari organisations is of paramount importance, specifically with regard to fostering performance excellence, satisfaction and community embeddedness within the Qatari work and cultural system.

Assessing the Feasibility of Developing a DBAE Curriculum in Qatar Utilizing Multimedia Technology

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of developing an art curriculum in Qatar, using the principles of the DBAE curriculum in conjunction with technology. Many of the challenges facing art educators and the art curriculum in Qatar can be approached through the multimedia applications of DBAE, which will provide instructors and students with an opportunity to more readily interact with visual art and to discover its educational relevance. Additionally, this study attempted to discover whether teachers are engaged in implementing technology in the art classroom and whether they are given the opportunity to engage in art to their satisfaction.

Assessment of atmospheric emissions due to anthropogenic activities in the state of Qatar

Atmospheric pollutants in the state of Qatar are derived from flaring and fugitive emissions due to a combination of new energy projects, operational conditions and plant operational problems. This research is the first attempt to quantitatively assess key atmospheric pollutants in Qatar, in accordance with the Kyoto agreements to reduce greenhouse gas production. Two datasets were analysed: 1. Between 2000 and 2002, data collected by industrial plants, as part of their own procedures, were assembled using a proforma questionnaire, to compile data on fuel consumption, fuel type, chemical characteristics, heat value, specific gravity etc, from industries in Qatar. The survey involved the oil & gas industry, petrochemical factories, power & desalination plants. Fuel data includes sulfur & nitrogen contents, chemical composition of flared gas and C content, some data compiled on road transport and fuel consumption. Analysis revealed significant atmospheric pollution. 2. Independent air-quality monitoring stations collected data between 2003 and 2005 to compare with data provided by industry. Three locations were chosen because of proximity to industrial plants: Mesaieed on the southeast coast, Dukhan on the west coast, and Halul Island, an offshore installation 30 km east of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. Five key tropospheric pollutants (NO2, SO2, CO, O3 and PM10), wind speed and wind direction, were monitored hourly from three stations located near gas installations across Qatar. Registered levels of CO, NO2 and SO2 were within Qatari and European Standards. PM10, however, was higher than the standards in all three stations and measured daily O3 levels were sometimes higher than the reference for Halul Island. Therefore, in contrast to industry data, the monitoring sites showed much pollution is below (better than) accepted thresholds, the difference between the two datasets illustrating the complexity involved in correctly monitoring pollution, and the effect of wind direction and dispersal of pollutants. Therefore these results have stimulated a comprehensive response to pollution monitoring in Qatar between 2005 and the present day, leading to reduction in flaring and fugitive emissions over the last few years, by as much as 50% in some operations, as a result of more careful operational planning, upgrading and better controls applied to new and existing projects. This research therefore provided much of the stimulus for emission reduction in Qatar, currently being investigated under the Clean Development Mechanism and Technology Transfer.

The distance created by the skyscrapers and their scale to people has a great impact on the behavior and interaction between the people and the city. In my research, I aim to incorporate the old experiences and behaviors with contemporary design in objects used within the house to maintain the feeling of being home through reliving the fading behaviors and traditions as well as bringing closer the modern city into the home through the use of materials. Through experimentation with human behaviors, materials and senses, I create a series of projects that deal with memory, nostalgia, and traces of time.

Kulturní politika Kataru a otázka identity / Cultural Policy in Qatar and the Question of Identity

This thesis deals with Qatar's cultural policy and question of national identity. The main goal of the thesis was to analysis Qatar's foreign cultural policy and to identify its main pillars. These pillars aim to help the foreign public to build their imagination of Qatar, its culture and values. The theoretical framework of the thesis goes back to theories of public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy and nation branding. These theories define benefits of foreign cultural presentation for state and specify conditions of successful presentation. Beside that they also describe role of state and non-state actors in the process of foreign presentation and point out the most effective tools towards foreign public. The theoretical background is followed by an analysis of Qatar's public and cultural diplomacy. The analysis starts with Qatar's initial projects which include the foundation of satellite channel network al-Jazeera and opening of big education campus in Doha Education City. Further chapters concentrate on new cultural policy as it is defined by national development projects. Since the main topic of the thesis is Qatar's foreign cultural policy the text includes also reactions of international media, organizations and other states to Qatar's activities. Exporting Oil, Importing Education: The Politics of Education in the Arabian Peninsula

The problem extends beyond Islamic culture and rentierism. These are merely factors. The problem of education stems from the government itself in mismanaged bureaucracy and the ruling family that dominates politics. My thesis will be looking closely at Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. My approach is looking at how the Ministry of Education or other departments responsible for implementing and enforcing education policy and how they function within the state and impact education performance for students. My thesis will cover a number of themes, such as; rentierism, culture (political, traditional, etc.), and other factors that impede education and development. My conclusion is that bureaucratic mismanagement with emphasis on rentier and cultural factors are the cause of generating the mismatch of skills making students ill prepared for the globalized world. The problems of education has differed since the 1960s to the present due to how oil shape politics and development. In addition, rentierism has changed and developed and forcing the Gulf to address more societal needs than previously before. Altering Wettability in Gas Condensate Sandstone Reservoirs for Gas Mobillity Improvement

In gas-condensate reservoirs, production rate starts to decrease when retrograde condensation occurs. As the bottomhole pressure drops below the dewpoint, gascondensate and water buildup impede flow of gas to the surface. To stop the impairment of the well, many publications suggest wettability alteration to gas-wetting as a permanent solution to the problem. Previous simulation work suggests an "optimum wetting state" to exist where maximum gas condensate well productivity is reached. This work has direct application in gas-condensate reservoirs, especially in identifying the most effective stimulation treatment which can be designed to provide the optimum wetting conditions in the near-wellbore region. This thesis presents an extensive experimental study on Berea sandstone rocks treated with a fluorinated polymer. Various concentrations of the polymer are investigated to obtain the optimum alteration in wettability to intermediate gas-wet. This wetting condition is achieved with an 8% polymer solution treatment, which yields maximum gas mobility, ultimately increasing the relative permeability curves and allowing enhanced recovery from gas-condensate wells. The treatments are performed mainly at room conditions, and also under high pressure and high temperature, simulating the natural environment of a reservoir. Several experimental techniques are implemented to examine the effect of treatments on wettability. These include flow displacement tests and oil imbibitions. The experimental work took place in the Wettability Research Lab in Texas A&M University at Qatar in Doha, Qatar. The studies in this area are important to improve the productivity of gas-condensate reservoirs where liquid accumulates, decreasing production of the well. Efficiency in the extraction of natural gas is important for the economic and environmental considerations of the oil and gas industry. Wettability alteration is one of the newest stimulation methods proposed by researchers, and shows great potential for future research and field applications.
