The first 'Little Emperors' in the 'Postmodern (East) Mall', China

Liu, Wing Sun January 2008 (has links)
This is an interpretive study that explores the potency of consumption culture in China through a selected group that belongs to the first generation of the one-child policy – the 'Little Emperors'. This is a population that is unprecedented, not only in China but also in human history. The dawning of postmodernity has ushered in a consumption culture. Fashion and brands are chosen as the consumption sites in this study in view of their significance: they are accessible and inundated with symbolic meanings for the construction of identities. In the vertigo of postmodernity, there is a sudden excess of commodities and signs in the marketplace. Anchored in traditional Chinese values and operating from a holistic perspective, this first generation of Little Emperors has cultured a different kind of consumption literacy in the 'Postmodern(Eas)t Mall'. They are brand raisers, in the context, there is a salient socio-cultural logic in symbolic consumption, an outside-in dialectical process in the self construct, a layered self with a strong institutional influence and discipline ascribed or imagined, they are happy consumers, even though they may not know fashion or brands very well.

Upplevelsen av att leva med schizofreni / The experience of living with Schizophrenia

Axelsson, Liza, Söderblom, Sara January 2017 (has links)
Schizophrenia is a mental illness where the person’s experience of the disease is an important basis for nursing care. To improve the care, more knowledge is required about the experience of living with schizophrenia. The aim of the study was to describe the experience of living with the mental illness schizophrenia. The study was conducted as a literature study. The literature search was done systematically, resulting in 14 scientific articles that shaped the outcome of the study. A content analysis was conducted, which resulted in three categories: alienation, losses and valuable life. The results showed that people with schizophrenia feel loneliness and alienation. The disease also contributed to huge losses of life. Despite setbacks several factors that could lead to a meaningful life was revealed. To create good caring, people with schizophrenia felt that health professionals need to show respect, listen and give space. Increased knowledge about the disease is recommended to reduce the stigma of schizophrenia. Further research on how health professionals should behave against people with schizophrenia is requested.

Torstensson Berg, Lovisa, Wessberg, Ebba January 2016 (has links)
Background Physiological and psychological changes appear during pregnancy, these affect the well-being of the pregnant woman. Physical activity and exercise has shown positive effects to improve and maintain health.  Aim To investigate the experience of women accomplished physical activity and physical exercise during pregnancy. Design and method The investigation has a descriptive qualitative design. Five women participated in semi-structured interviews. The data processing consisted of a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Results The informants described positive experiences with physical activity and exercise during pregnancy. The participants felt more prepared for childbirth, improved self confidence and more energy. However, to maintain the level of physical activity, it was necessary to adjust the actual physical activity. The decrease in mobility, lead to an increase of mental stress. It was difficult to prioritize between exercise and work. The questioning attitude from family members and others made the woman feel insecure. Conclusion The informants described positive experiences from exercising during pregnancy and also its difficulties. This study can contribute to a better understanding for women who would like to stay active during pregnancy.

Rapid transit routing in Winnipeg: determining factors for corridor selection

Prokopanko, Adam 06 April 2017 (has links)
Past practices for determining the routes of bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada have largely relied upon comparisons of quantitative factors. This research recommends qualitative factors to be incorporated into the process in order to present a more complete evaluation of proposed transit routes. Key Winnipeg informants were interviewed from three groups: transit officials, planners, and developers. Each group has a vested interest in the establishment of new BRT corridors and the construction of transit-oriented development (TOD) around the stations. Informants from Ottawa were interviewed to provide insights from another city having long-standing rapid transit development. The research identified eleven factors that should be taken into consideration when evaluating and selecting the routes for BRT corridors in Winnipeg. A framework of recommendations was developed, with the two foundational factors of transportation value and long-term city-building providing a basis to expand on using transit, development, and planning factors. / May 2017

Att skämmas över sitt barn : Föräldrars upplevelse av att leva med barn med självskadebeteende / Being ashamed of your child : Parents' experience of living with a child with deliberate self-harm behavior

Almqvist, Lina, Lyckhage, Linda January 2017 (has links)
Background: Mental illness is a growing problem in society and is increasingly seen in younger people. Deliberate self-harm is seen as a complication of mental illness. Self-harm means that people intentionally injure themselves as a habit and with more or less severe de-gree, but with no intention to take their own life. Aim: The aim of the study is to illustrate parents’ experiences of their child’s deliberate self-harm behavior. Method: A literature-based study based on analysis of ten qualitative articles. Results: The results are presented in three main themes and ten subthemes. The first main theme is "A roller coaster of feelings", with three subthemes "First battle", "Feelings of guilt and shame" and "Anxiety and fear". The second main theme is "Parenthood and family rela-tionship" with four subthemes "Changing positions of power", "Parents in conflict", "Not being enough as a parent" and "A changed relationship". The last main theme is "Parents ex-perience of support" with three subthemes "The insufficient support", "Feeling seen" and "To get support from the surroundings". Conclusion: Health care professionals need to create a good relationship with both parents and patients, which can be done by meeting the parents' feelings and being responsive.

Nothing to fear but fear itself? : A qualitative study of men’s and women’s fear of crime

Roth Cortes, Rodolfo January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to obtain a better understanding of what people fear might happen to them when being outside after dark. A lot of quantitative studies have been made on the subject of fear of crime to generalize and quantify people’s fears, but lacks any in-depth information about their fears and experiences. I have chosen to research about just that. Theories used are Doing gender and Ideal victims and I have interviewed 8 individuals about what they fear, why they fear it, where they think this fear comes from and other feeling and experiences associated with it. In my analysis we can see that there is a big difference in what individuals fear between men and women. The women in this study are more scared than the men to the point that they do not really venture outside after dark. Men on the other hand feel a bit more unsafe after dark, but never enough to avoid going outside. I also found that women feel shame over their pre-conceptions of men’s crime towards women. Men were mostly scared of assault and robbery while women are mostly scared of sexual assault, and their fears mostly derive from media and experiences people close to them have had.

Becoming affected with artistic memoir: entanglements with arts-based education in India

Berry, Alexandra Michele 01 May 2017 (has links)
Drawing loosely on feminist and post-human notions of learning as an “untamed” and “more-than-multiple” experience (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987, p. 154), I play with the use of Artistic Memoir as a method to explore my affectual experiences (Braidotti, 2002; Springgay, 2008) as a British Columbian, school-based Child and Youth Counsellor working as a visitor in the context of a shanti-school in Goa, India. Well practiced in traditionally Western paradigms of education, my intention is to move beyond my familiar understandings of what it means to be educated in North America to heighten awareness of intuitive forms of learning that arise in an encounter between intra-acting bodies, materials, and the agentic spaces between (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987). Understanding learning experiences as relational and enigmatic events, composed of rather than in the world, I engage with an inductive, intuitive and becoming-with process, exploring the emerging themes and entanglements of my presence in this Goan classroom as they grow out of a collection of child-driven, emergent art projects (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987; Mazzei, 2010). As I take on the implications of methodology and “data analysis” in post-qualitative research, I think with Deleuze and Guattari's (1987) constructions of maps, expressing my interpretation of these events with my own poetic and visual assemblages and navigating curiosities through Artistic Memoir. Thinking with philosophies of immanence (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987), new materiality (Braidotti, 2002; Stewart, 2007) and the autobiographical nature of a/r/tography (Irwin, Beer, Springgay, Grauer, Xiong, Bickel, 2006), Artistic Memoir has unravelled as a nomadic method, giving my experiences and understandings of the projects a temporal body – a disjointed place for my data, fragments of my affectual reverberations with Goa, to momentarily settle. A fragmented and non-linear collection of poems, images, anecdotes and short stories, this composition begins from the middle and poses no end; its process is designed to stir up questions over answers. Through this method, my intention is to look into the “events of activities and encounters” with affective, arts-based education, “evoking transformation and change” in my experience with “data” and understanding of learning, being and knowing (Hultman & Taguchi, 2010, p. 535). / Graduate / 2018-05-01 / 0273 / 0727 / 0998 / a.berry089@gmail.com
