A Quantitative Content Analysis of Newspapers from Florida’s Cuban Diaspora. To what extent is soft power expressed in the writings of journalists and other editors? (July, 2016 - July, 2017)O'Shea, Rhea-Leigh January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the US-based Cuban community through conducting a Quantitative Content Analysis (QCA) on three of the most popular, diasporic newspapers. The manifest content of 30 editorials and other news articles was analysed, utilising deductive reasoning to uncover the presence of soft power. Consequently, the results communicate the diaspora’s support for less coercive measures and policies that welcome increased relations, and often wish to support island-based Cubans. This contradicts the community’s characterisation as a group, who overwhelmingly supports the use of hard power, and wishes to restrict Cuban engagement. This study fits in an underdeveloped area of International Relations (IR) and, therefore, seeks to clarify that the diaspora are not monolithically in favour of hard power policies (that enforce isolation and economic coercion) to achieve its goals. In sum, the study utilises a combined theoretical framework that includes diaspora politics, identity, and soft power to analyse the findings, thus illustrating a frequent presence of soft power throughout many of these diasporic writings.

Obezita v českých médiích / Obesity in the Czech mediaBurdová, Lucie January 2021 (has links)
The growing prevalence of obesity, both in adults and children, not only in developed countries, is perceived as a global problem due to the associated health risks. This study quantifies the media content in the selected period 01.07.2019-30.06.2020, it identifies which media and with what reach communicates the obesity most often, as well as verifies whether this finding correlates with the sources of information most often used by obese people. In addition, it finds a correlation between the use of the term obesity in the title and the complexity of the information contained therein. The aim of this study is to analyze media content as a source of information on obesity and to verify in this context whether media content supports the stereotype in terms of depicting obesity as a disease and health risk associated with individual responsibility at the level of etiology and therapy, including appropriate stigmatizing visualization. Furthermore to verify, whether the authors of media content related to obesity, as this is perceived as a disease, most often mediate the views and perspectives of doctors, respectively obesitologists, and are a means for government communication of strategies in the field of health and health literacy of the Czech Republic's population. There was used quantitative...

Invasionens första vecka : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av Rysslands invasion av Ukraina 2022 i svenska nyhetsmedier / The first week of the invasion : A quantitative content analysis of Russia's invasion of Ukraine 2022 in Swedish news mediaJohansson, Sara, Håkansson, Lydia January 2022 (has links)
News journalism is a great source of information about things that happen beyond our own reality. The need to take part in news is something that is increasing during a crisis and despite the development of social media and the internet, the traditional media still fulfill a socially important function. Against this background, we believe that it is important to analyze the content of the media in order to gain a greater understanding of what mass communication looks like and what effects it can have. The purpose of the study has therefore been to investigate the framing of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The study examined articles published by the news media Aftonbladet and SVT during the first week of the invasion to investigate the framing of the reporting at an early stage. The study is based on a quantitative method as the purpose has been to investigate how frequently actors, different frames and presentations are used. The framing theory has previously been used to investigate, discuss and analyze the interpretations that are made. This study shows that official sources are most common. This is in line with previous research and is explained by the fact that journalists turn to official sources in times of crisis to get information about what has happened. The results of the study also showed that the episodic presentation was more common in the reporting of the invasion, however, it was more common for the thematic framing to be used in articles about economics. The results thus show that it is more common to report on individual events than to put them in a larger context. There is a certain difference in the use of frameworks where Aftonbladet portrays human interest and morality more than SVT. An increase in the use of these frameworks in Swedish war journalism has been noted.

I also looked at which type of actor that was given most room to speak in the articles. The theoretical perspectives and previous research that were used in this study was agenda setting, framing, news evaluation, journalistic rules, studies about gender in news media and studies about crime journalism. The methods that were used was a quantitative content analysis and critical linguistic. The study was conducted on a selection of 200 articles (100 from each newspaper) for the quantitative content analysis and 8 articles for the critical discourse analysis. The study focused on five different types of crime: assault, rape, murder, robbery and attempted murder. The study showed several similarities between the two newspapers One was that murder for example was the by far most covered type of crime in both Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. The main differences concerned what was prioritized in the newspaper's news evaluation. The main differences that were found were between articles about male and female victims and perpetrators. Women were always framed as victims while men almost completely disappeared in the text if the perpetrator was female. Male perpetrators were also framed as ruthless and dangerous to a larger extent than female perpetrators.

Nyhetssveket från TT : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av TT:s rapportering från norr / The news betrayal from TT : A quantitative content analysis of TT's news reporting from the northNilsson, Felicia, Elebro, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
Title: The news betrayal from TT – A quantitative content analysis of TT’s news reporting from the north In the year of 2013 TT-nyhetsbyrån closed down their three local editorial offices in north Sweden with a promise that the news coverage of Norrland would remain the same. In this study we aim to examine if, and how, the journalistic content has changed due to their centralization. Based on theories of media and democracy, the commercialization of journalism and news evaluation, this study investigates different aspects of TT’s journalistic output such as news outlets, news topic, democratic value dimensions, framing, original reporting and sourcing. The material of examination consists of a total of 199 articles which derive from Luleå, Umeå and Sundsvall. Further the material is spread out over two periods of time. More particularly five years before, and five years after the close down. We have employed a so-called synthetic week during both time intervals, meaning that you randomly select Monday one week, Tuesday the following week, and so forth. The result of the quantitative study showed that TT’s news reporting about the municipalities has decreased in all the aspects that have been investigated. The analysis of the result, together with previous research and chosen theories, indicates that TT seems to have become more commercialized and audience-oriented, which may have affected how news is valued. From a democratic perspective it is problematic. As the largest news agency TT plays an important role in Swedish journalism, not least when editorial offices around the country reduce their own news coverage.

Ekokamrar i pandemin : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys om åsikterna i två ekokamrar rörande pandemihanteringen av covid-19 i SverigeRudhe, Signe January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine users ́ opinions regarding the Swedish management of the covid-19 pandemic in two echo chambers, consisting of the comment fields in two ideologically different news pages on Facebook, Aftonbladet and Samtiden. Using a quantitative content analysis in different steps, the study will attempt to answer the following questions: - What opinions are expressed in two eco-chambers regarding the pandemic management in Sweden? -To what extent are these common or not between the echo chambers? The empirical material consists a total of 696 comments which will be analysed and compiled into a result. The result will then be set against two opposing theories, the theory of the Public Sphere and the theory of echo chambers, where these disagree upon whether the two different news pages lead to polarization. Depending on the outcome, the result can be said to be in agreement with one or both of the theories. The result of the study shows that the opinions of the users in the echo chambers are mainly the same which supports the theory of the Public Sphere and the idea of a need for a common consensus in order to maintain a functioning democracy. The opinions concern the subjects Sweden, the Swedish government, the Swedish state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the Restrictions and statistic rapports about the death toll in Sweden. The results provide information about the effects of echo chambers in an ongoing pandemic and the overall complexity around the definition of the term.

Svenska pressens fokus i amerikanska valet : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys över hur svenska nyhetsmedier gestaltade amerikanska presidentvalet 2020 i sin nyhetsrapporteringStorm, Anton, Majed Amir, Rani January 2021 (has links)
2020 was the year of the American presidential election. Joe Biden, the former senator and vice president won against the incumbent president and business magnate Donald Trump. Because of the coronavirus it was an unusual election. Vote counting was not over on election night but continued a few more days and Donald Trump claimed the result to be false. The study aims to understand what Swedish newspapers focused on under the American election 2020 and what they choose to frame from a political journalist perspective. We focused on four of the biggest Swedish newspapers to see how they differ and relate. To do that we used 29 articles from every newspaper, 116 in total and with help of framing theory and a quantitative content analysis we could find correlations between the four newspapers. Thanks to earlier studies we could compare how Donald Trump was portrayed in 2016 and what both Swedish and American media framed last election. The study concluded that Donald Trump was mentioned more in the Swedish press than his opponent Joe Biden. None of the vice presidents were ever mentioned as much as the presidential candidates. The study also concluded that more articles focused on the political game more than the political issues, that the articles were more often neutral or negative than positive and that politicians were the most quoted.

”Störst på fotboll” : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av Fotbollskanalens gestaltning av dam- och herrfotboll i sina Instagraminlägg under 2022 / "Greatest in football" : A quantitative content analysis of Fotbollskanalen's portrayal of women's and men's soccer in its Instagram posts in 2022Nyman Alenäs, Nora January 2023 (has links)
The representation of women in sportsmedia is still lacking in 2023. Studies finds that women and men are not represented in the same way in social media and the change to more equal media coverage is slow. The purpose of this study is to examine Fotbollskanalen’s Instagram to see similarities and differences in the framing of women's and men's soccer. Thus, the study aims to contribute and problematize the media and its responsibility for truthful coverage of the media landscape of sports. Through a quantitative content analysis the study analyzed 1576 Instagram posts published by Fotbollskanalen in 2022, from January 1 to December 31. The study places great emphasis on the theory of framing, gender theory, representation and gender stereotyping. This study is based on the assumptions of these theories. The results of the study shows that women appear in approximately one out of ten posts, they were more likely to be portrayed passively and the posts generally had a more positive tone. The study finds that men and women in sports are portrayed differently on Fotbollskanalen's Instagram.
