On the Border: an architectural inquiry into the sacred and quotidian

Nicholas-Schmidt, Michael January 2009 (has links)
Even in our secular age, the sacred continues to be a powerful cognitive space in the landscape of the imagination. I am a Roman Catholic and amongst those who struggle to exist both in the structured universe of the sacred, and the contemporary plurality of the city. The mystery of the incarnation provides a theological argument for the indwelling of the Spirit in creation through time. With the advent of secularism however, it is possible to conceive of a time outside the sacred. Tension within theology in academia, faith in politics, or religion in a pluralistic society, reveals a boundary between our beliefs and our public face which becomes a rigid barrier – distinct as the private and public. Conflicting temporal structures of the sacred and secular give definition to this divide. Architecture has historically placed itself as interlocutor, negotiating complex thresholds in order to engage meaning. Contemporary sacred architecture, however, has avoided confrontation with the public realm. Thick edges distinguish the realms of the sacred and the quotidian. This thesis engages the border between the sacred and the secular. An analysis of the temporal structures of contemporary sacred space and its civic environment opens up an exploration of one such border around St. Basil’s Church in Toronto. The definition of a threshold at this edge challenges our contemporary divide by exploring potential transitions. Between the church and the street, architecture inhabits the edge, expanding and articulating connections. Methods are explored for constructing built forms which promote a transition between, and interaction of, sacred and secular temporalities. At this threshold, individual creativity provides metaphors for ontology. Crossing this threshold creates opportunities for overlap between the time of the sacred and the time of the secular. These transitions challenge how we imagine both the church and the city in contemporary architecture.

"A vivência e a invenção no cotidiano em 'Rosa, minha irmã Rosa' (Alice Vieira) e 'O sofá estampado' (Lygia Bojunga)" / LIVING and INVENTION in the QUOTIDIAN -Rosa,minha irmã Rosa(Alice Vieira) and O sofá estampado(Lygia Bojunga)

Papes, Cleide da Costa e Silva 10 December 2002 (has links)
The experience in daily life happens through a variety of strategies created by mankind in order to overcome life’s fatefulness; they are “ways of doing" or “ways of living" that are used to transform space and time and to fill the void brought by social action deformation. Man thus tries to go through everyday’s deterministic grill, with an inventiveness which reveals itself as an anonymous hero. Pointed out as the place of man in this mechanism, home is the core of one’s affectivity where life shuts itself in, hidden in shelter, food and protection, and where the cells of hope and idealism get deposited. Despite this, such a universe has been deeply modified, due to current changes in the world, in which the “counter-home" supersedes as the space of man’s annihilation, where one oscillates between BEING and NOTHING, bending to the capitalist society’s appeals to acquiring material goods in the world of HAVING. Such realities have been exposed in the works by Alice Vieira (Portugal) and Lygia Bojunga Nunes (Brazil), studied in the present thesis. Both of them expose the daily world and the foundations upon which man can live without destroying oneself, escaping from being the problematic hero who looks for authentic values in such a reality focused on the market. Choosing realism, the Portuguese writer presents the BEING, man in daily life, on the voice of a child-narrator who exposes the facts with the authenticity and logic of a puerile viewpoint. The Brazilian writer presents the HAVING, by using the fable process with fantastic situations in which the weird configures the hyper-real. Home and “counter-home", found in both writers’ works, point to the necessity of recentralization of man to the affection bonds that settle one in life and confirm one’s existence by the other’s look. Besides, they show the subject’s crisis relating to the identity and to the necessity of recovering one’s position of active modification agent and speaker in the transformation of the world. From literary creation to great invention in the real plane, the perspective of a utopia is open, making it possible to fill the void of the future with new relationships ¾ man-man, man-nature, man-society. From this point, man escapes from the fragmentation and, proportionally, globalization, with a new horizon of possibilities. This utopia is the word renaming the world, and it is also the individual itself, resuming its speech as the effective speaker of the humanitarian era.

Transforming Quotidian Landscapes: The Ecological and Vertical Dimensions of Daily Experience in the Poetry of T.S. Eliot, Peter Riley and Andrew Crozier

Patterson, Jonathan Thomas 01 August 2013 (has links)
This thesis project analyzes the influence of T.S. Eliot, named "the first Cambridge poet" by Jeremy Noel-Tod, on Cambridge poets Andrew Crozier and Peter Riley, particularly through their representations of the quotidian. At stake is the larger question: what is the often hidden effect of the objects that surround us in daily life? Or even--what is the value of daily life? By extension, their representation of the quotidian directly affects their depiction of the physical environment allowing for an ecocritical debate in which landscape determines how individuals place themselves in a familiar physical environment defined by tradition, culture, and the routine. Regarding the influence of landscape on the poet, Eliot said, "[m]y poetry, like that of other poets, shows traces of every environment in which I have lived." He, of course, was not referring to Nature, but how social geographies encapsulate traditions, culture, and language, in what can be classified as ecologically-informed memories. One section of this project addresses the present scholarly (mis)interpretation of ecocritism, moving it beyond a discourse of global sustainability or sustainable environmental practices to a more distinct focus in what phenomenologists refer to an ecological sphere of existence in which the daily lives of people become inseparable from the environments in which they have lived.

The nursing profession that has as its essence the care of the other, needs to be analyzed light from his quotidian so there is a more reliable analysis of how this care occurs in everyday professionals. I realized along the professional experience, that nurses go through various situations in their quotidian hospital environment, many difficulties in bringing the action of caring. Many of these adversities eventually remove him from his focus of work, impacting negatively on their profession and job satisfaction. Trace this study aimed to understand the quotidian care of nurses in a hospital based in the mining area kills, its relationship with the patient, institution, society and even the nursing staff. For this I used the qualitative methodology and obtained information through semi-structured interviews were guided the development of the study in the sociology of quotidian life. This research finds the target in its real dimension of the lived world, from speech and feelings of individuals. Based on the theoretical framework of the sociology of quotidian Michel Maffesoli, I sought to understand the daily life of nurses, their reflections about doing nursing and how it impacts on patient care. In addition, the study seeks to create a space for analysis of postures used by nurses in their daily lives, understand that quotidian doing nursing, which can foster data for deeper analysis of care provided, and can help build a model more consolidated professional practice, to enable a greater appreciation of nursing. Able to define lines that returned the four categories, which sometimes showed satisfaction, sometimes professional distress, bringing the variety of feelings involved in daily nurse.

In defense of school as a privileged place of professional formation, this work assumes the acting of the pedagogical advisors as the corresponsible for the organization and realization of intentional actions with the intent of making learning experiences possible, for those who teach and for those who, somehow, act as educators. This research is built of a narrative written from specific experiences of a group of pedagogical advisors in talk spaces ¿ meetings that were intentionally planned and coordinated to become opportunities to reflect and build knowledge on work itself, guided by principles like dialogue, authorship, professional autonomy and the association between personality and professionalism. From those shared experiences, some propositions ended up being also formative for those professionals, what makes us suppose they are also formative in the work with teachers and other professionals of education. From this research, some considerations emerge about formative procedures in collective spaces, like the production and reading of reflective writing, the expression of other sensitive experiences, modes of institution of relations between the knowledge of professionals and pedagogical and scientific knowledge, as well as different dimensions of the acting of the group¿s creator. In this sense, the main contributions brought by the research talk about the methodological possibilities that potentize the personal-professional development of people and favor their transformation through education, especially because they are considered protagonists in this process. From this work also rise reflections about the trajectory experienced by the researcher when she shows what she learned during the research about/in/with the everyday work and during the writing about the process / Doutorado / Psicologia Educacional / Doutora em Educação

Experts from different areas have highlighted the “return”, or “re-valorization" of astrology in the West. The diffusion of astrological phenomenon also did not go unnoticed by Brazilian anthropologists. The astrology, as a quotidian experience of life, diffuses more and more in various aspects of Brazilian culture. Given such an emergency, with this research, wewant to lean over on the theme. This dissertation aims to analyze the symbolic dimensions of astrology expressed in interpersonal relations and in organization of everyday life of individuals that living in Recife. The investigation was constructed from observations started in 2010 with the collaboration of researchers, members from Interdisciplinary Nucleus about Imaginary Research and from Anthropology Post-Graduate Program of UFPE.Our research was based on semi structured interviews, as well as observations of courses and lectures about astrology, and informal conversations. In the 2010-2011 period, interviews were conducted with five astrologers and ten students interested in astrology. In order to analyze this material was used the methodology formulated by the French anthropologist Gilbert Durand: the myth criticism. This method of literary criticism, criticism of the speech, makes it possible to understand the mythical character inherent in the meaning of any report.Based on authors such as Jung, Bachelard, Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand, Maffesoli, and the Dictionary of Symbols by Chevalier and Gheerbrant, we propose to interpret symbols and mythemes raised, revealing their meanings and their relationship with culture. We believe that this study has revealed not only the symbolic universe of the experience of astrology in Recife, but also contributed to greater understanding of the theme in the Brazilian context.

Liminal public infrastructure : a typology of public space for everyday performances

Alkayyali, Ahmed 25 November 2011 (has links)
Every day the city plays out its spectacle unnoticed. This quotidian context is one which is full of complexity, spontaneity and possibility. It is here that architecture can engage with both the city and its user, space and experience; challenging conventional architectural typologies. It is within public space, that architecture can both enhance and celebrate the everyday. This project investigates all of these aspects within the city of Pretoria and more specifically along Van der Walt Street, focusing on the urban cavity at Munitoria. Surveillance is conceptually used to experience this spectacle, on multiple levels of enterpretation, where the architecture is reduced to support both the concept of surveillance and its experience.
