This study evaluates the thermal performance and the level of energy efficiency and proposing changes with bioclimatic strategies in a residence of Cuiabá/MT. It was chosen housing consequent of the current production space. The building has construction system for fast execution ("Jetcasa"). The building was divided into six thermal zones, three of them with prolonged permanency. A micrometeorological station was used to obtain snapshots environmental data. Four HOBO U12-012 datalogger with TMC20HD cables were used to measure soil temperature and internal variables of the living room, home office and double room zones which air temperature, relative humidity and temperature of the globe to the thermal performance evaluation of building by NBR 15.575 (ABNT, 2013) methods. Three HOBO UX90-006x datalogger are used to examine the occupancy and light. The infrared camera recorded the surface temperatures of building elements. EnergyPlus 8.0 software was used to determine the level of energy efficiency of the building by the RTQ -R method. Measurements were two periods of 15 days: warm dry (28/06 to 12/07/2013) and warm humid (31/12/2013 to 14/01/2014). The warm dry period has low humidity and high daily temperature ranges and warm wet, high humidity and low daily temperature variations. The living room was the thermal zone with worse thermal performance and energy efficiency and the double room had the best. The walls have greater interference for the heating gain of the room and the home office. Energy efficiency was level C. The proposed changes to the building of study are the protections openings, protections walls, planting vegetation and installing water heating systems.

Understanding registered nurses' and student nurses' positive mentorship experiences in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) using appreciative inquiry

Alharazi, Ruba January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents work conducted for a structured doctorate consisting of four main components. The first element is a case study investigating the current practice of mentorship in a clinical setting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The qualitative case study was conducted in a government nursing college and its associated government hospital. Data were collected through individual interviews (2) with nursing coordinators; semi-structured focus groups (8) with mentees (n=3), mentors and clinical educators (n=3), lecturers (n=1) and head nurses (n=1); and finally, documentary analysis. The findings show that neither mentors nor mentees were happy with the current arrangements. Mentees believed that mentorship did not benefit them, and mentors seemed to resent the request to devote time to mentees. Both parties need to approach the other with more empathy, appreciating their difficulties and respecting their individual choices and wishes. Mentors also pointed to a lack of coordination between university and hospital, and both mentors and mentees felt that the mentorship process lacked clarity. Devising and putting into practice a new policy could lead to important positive changes in mentors’ and mentees’ experiences and relationships. The second element of the structured doctorate, undertaken after the case study, is the best evidence literature review. The aim of the review was to examine published studies on mentorship in nursing from the perspectives of both mentors and mentees in order to obtain a holistic view of mentorship experiences. A critical evaluation of these published studies is presented, reviewing the definitions of mentorship in the literature and highlighting the sparse literature on nursing mentorship in Saudi Arabia. Next is a critical overview of the nursing mentorship experiences in Islamic countries. Mentors’ and mentees’ views on mentorship are discussed. The final section summarizes the findings and attempts to use them to answer the literature review questions whilst highlighting the gaps in the literature. The third element is the main study, which emerged from the literature and builds on the case study. It aimed to investigate the factors contributing to positive mentorship experiences in nursing in Jeddah by exploring mentors’ and mentees’ positive experiences. The qualitative study was conducted from the theoretical perspective of appreciative inquiry (AI). Data were collected in semi-structured focus groups (total of six) with mentees (n=3) and mentors (n=3) at three settings. The key contributing factors to positive mentorship experiences and the main themes from data analysis are communication; involvement; encouragement; reciprocity; students’ sense of fear; mentors’ role, including its characteristics, preparation for it and feedback; and organisational-level processes and resources, such as time availability, workload, allocation and college-university collaboration. It is recommended that a consensus definition of mentorship be issued to avoid conflict in roles and expectations, that systems be developed to give mentors time to spend with mentees and that mentors attend a mentorship training programme to gain understanding of the process and be prepared for their role. The fourth element is the dissemination artefact and plan, which communicate the findings to develop education, policy, practice and research. A briefing for stakeholders contains an overview of the study and key findings. An outline of a mentorship training programme and a draft handbook for local use in Saudi Arabia are proposed. The dissemination plan explains how the researcher plans to disseminate the artefact.

Rudolph Otto's theory of religious experience in The Idea of the Holy : A study in the phenomenology and philosophy of religion

Schlamm, L. P. January 1988 (has links)
This essay seeks to chart a largely unexplored psychology of religious experience in The Idea of the Holy, which is directly related to Otto's claim that one of the most important functions of discourse about religious experience is to evoke numinous feelings in a religiously sensitive audience. It will be demonstrated that Otto's concepts of schematization of the numinous, the numinous and the rational a priori, and divination cannot be understood by phenomenologists and philosophers of religion except in the light of this claim, and that Otto intends that his concept of schematization (profoundly influenced by Fries's transcendental idealism) be identified with his law of association of analogous feelings which explains how the excitation of numinous experience is produced. Moreover, this theory of religious experience rests upon an assumption about the relationship between religious language and experience which requires elucidation and evaluation. Otto's claims about numinous experience being inexpressible and yet, paradoxically, made intelligible through the use of analogy will be critically examined in the light of recent philosophical discussion concerning the relationship between all language and experience, and it will be shown not only that Otto's ineffability language is not unintelligible, but also that he offers a sophisticated theory of analogical language which may do much to extend the boundaries of our understanding of religious experience. Furthermore, an assessment will be made of the cognitive status of numinous experience; and it will be argued that, in spite of Otto's failure to establish its cognitive certainty by appealing to his account of the numinous a priori, he successfully demonstrates that, whatever its cognitive status-may be, it is a distinctive experience which cannot be confused with any other and is easily identifiable as unmistakably religious. Finally, an attempt will be made to clarify Otto's standing within the history of phenomenology of religion.

Applications for imidazophenanthridine-based heterocycles

Richmond, Craig J. January 2009 (has links)
The physical properties and reactivity of 2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridinium cations (DIPs) and analogous heterocycles have been investigated. The adapted syntheses developed were applied to a range of aryl amines and more elaborate substrates, such as bifunctional aminoquinolinium cations and amino functionalised polyoxometalates (POMs). 1,2,3,12b-tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridines (TIPs), an intermediate in the 3-step cascade synthesis of DIPs, have also been isolated. Derivatisation of the TIP structure at the imidazo-N position enables control of the reactivity of the intermediate with respect to electronic potential and pKa, allowing isolation of a selection of TIP structures. Correlations between these parameters and reaction outcome have been made and other influences such as steric and solvent effects have also been investigated. Investigation of the structure and properties of the TIP framework led to the discovery of a pH dependent cyclisation between the ring-closed TIP form and the ring-open aminoethylphenanthridinium (AEP) form. The complementary TIP and AEP forms can be further manipulated by oxidation or reduction to convert them to their “pH-inert” forms, DIP and aminoethyldihydrophenanthridine (AEDP). These four interchangeable states formed the basis of a redox “lockable” molecular switch that could be useful for molecular level information processing and data storage. The pH dependent cyclisation between the TIP and AEP forms was also investigated as a targeting mechanism for potential intercalating antitumour agents. The system looks to exploit the pH difference between cancerous tissues and normal tissue to combine high cytotoxicity with high selectivity, a desirable trait that is unfortunately absent in most chemotherapeutic agents. Preliminary in vitro assays have shown the TIP/AEP frameworks to have IC50 values in the pM range in human ovarian cancer cell lines, comparable to cisplatin and the closely related DIP intercalaters.
