Crossed product C*-algebras by finite group actions with a generalized tracial Rokhlin propertyArchey, Dawn Elizabeth, 1979- 06 1900 (has links)
viii, 107 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation consists of two related parts. In the first portion we use the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of a finite group G on stably finite simple unital C *-algebras containing enough projections. The main results of this part of the dissertation are as follows. Let A be a stably finite simple unital C *-algebra and suppose a is an action of a finite group G with the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose A has real rank zero, stable rank one, and suppose the order on projections over A is determined by traces. Then the crossed product algebra C * ( G, A, à à ±) also has these three properties.
In the second portion of the dissertation we introduce an analogue of the tracial Rokhlin property for C *-algebras which may not have any nontrivial projections called the projection free tracial Rokhlin property . Using this we show that under certain conditions if A is an infinite dimensional simple unital C *-algebra with stable rank one and à à ± is an action of a finite group G with the projection free tracial Rokhlin property, then C * ( G, A, à à ±) also has stable rank one. / Adviser: Phillips, N. Crossed product C*-algebras of minimal dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set and the torusSun, Wei, 1979- 06 1900 (has links)
vii, 124 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation is a study of the relationship between minimal dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set ( X ) and torus ([Special characters omitted]) and their corresponding crossed product C *-algebras.
For the case when the cocyles are rotations, we studied the structure of the crossed product C *-algebra A by looking at a large subalgebra A x . It is proved that, as long as the cocyles are rotations, the tracial rank of the crossed product C *-algebra is always no more than one, which then indicates that it falls into the category of classifiable C *-algebras. In order to determine whether the corresponding crossed product C *-algebras of two such minimal dynamical systems are isomorphic or not, we just need to look at the Elliott invariants of these C *-algebras.
If a certain rigidity condition is satisfied, it is shown that the crossed product C *-algebra has tracial rank zero. Under this assumption, it is proved that for two such dynamical systems, if A and B are the corresponding crossed product C *-algebras, and we have an isomorphism between K i ( A ) and K i ( B ) which maps K i (C(X ×[Special characters omitted])) to K i (C( X ×[Special characters omitted])), then these two dynamical systems are approximately K -conjugate. The proof also indicates that C *-strongly flip conjugacy implies approximate K -conjugacy in this case.
We also studied the case when the cocyles are Furstenberg transformations, and some results on weakly approximate conjugacy and the K -theory of corresponding crossed product C *-algebras are obtained. / Committee in charge: Huaxin Lin, Chairperson, Mathematics

Statins are drugs commonly prescribed for prevention of hyper-lipidemia. In addition to the cholesterol-lowering, these medicines seem to enhance osteogenesis and suppress bone resorption, which could affect orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and relapse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether atorvastatin (ATV) might affect the orthodontic relapse or tooth movement and osteoclastogenesis, through the modulation of the following molecules: receptor activator of nuclear κ B ligand (RANKL) and; - osteoprotegerin (OPG). Furthermore, we analyzed potential adverse effects of ATV on long bone turnover and endochondral ossification. In the first experiment, 36 rats were subjected to OTM for 21 days, when the appliance was removed. After, the animals were administered daily with ATV (15mg/Kg) or saline (SAL), via gavage (n=18, per group). Up to 7, 14 and 21 days of ATV/SAL administration the tooth relapse was measured while maxillary and femur histologic sections were obtained and prepared to: - H&E staining – used in histomorphometric analysis, tartrate resistant acid phosphatase histochemical staining (TRAP) – used to osteoclasts counting and, immunohistochemistry to RANKL and OPG. Atorvastatin resulted in a decreased tooth relapse (p<0.05), and a transient reduction of osteoclasts number (p<0.05). There was a positive and significant correlation (p<0.01) between these two parameters (osteoclasts number and relapse rate). The statin administration increased significantly the OPG (p<0.01), but not the RANKL expression. Furthermore, after 21 days of ATV administration, the thickness of growth plate cartilage and chondrocytic hypertrophic zone was enhanced. In the second experiment, 24 rats started to be administered daily with ATV or SAL, via gavage. Two weeks later, the OTM started. The tooth displacement was measured after 7, 14, and 21 days, while the maxillary and femur histologic sections were obtained only after 14 and 21 days of OTM. At these times, the sections were prepared to H&E and TRAP, intending to perform the histomorphometric analysis and osteoclasts count. Atorvastatin administration promoted a decreased tooth movement (p<0.05), and a transient reduction of osteoclasts number (p<0.05). In the SAL group, after 14 days of OTM, the increased number of osteoclasts was associated to a reduced bone volume rate, when compared to its control maxillae. However, this trend was not obvious in ATV group. Interestingly, after 35 days, statins did not affect the bone turnover and endochondral ossification. The big picture of our study suggests that systemic administration of statins is able to minimize OTM and relapse. However, its cellular effects on endochondral ossification and bone turnover during OTM or relapse seem to be limited to a short period, apparently requiring further investigations. Finally, our results shed light on OPG overexpression induced by statins, which represents a molecular target modulating maxillary bone metabolism thus inhibiting orthodontic relapse.

The OPG, RANK and RANKL system is one of the most important discoveries in bone biology. These proteins are key regulators of bone remodeling and in the literature there are several studies of tooth resorption. However, in tooth replantation, reports have not been found. The purpose of this study was to determine the immunolabeling of OPG, RANK and RANKL in replanted teeth in rats, using immunohistochemistry methodology. A control group (no replanted teeth) was formed by four rats. Twenty-four rats (Rattus norvegicus, albinus) were submitted to the extraction of their upper right incisors. The replantation was performed according to the groups below: group I – immediate replantation; group II – delay replantation without treatment and group III – delay replantation with endodontic treatment (extirpation of papilla and the root canal filled with calcium hydroxide) and root surface treatment (periodontal ligament was removed with scalpel and teeth were immersed in 2% acidulated phosphate sodium fluoride). The animals were euthanized at the end of the experimental periods (10 and 60 days). Longitudinal 6μm slices embedded in paraffin were obtained. The slices were submitted to immunohistochemistry reaction by means of the primary antibodies for OPG, RANK and RANKL proteins. The results showed the expression of OPG in all groups and periods. RANKL expression was observed in all groups, except in the immediate replanted teeth group (60 days). RANK expression was observed only at 10 days in all groups which replantation was performed. The qualitative analysis of our findings indicated that the system OPG, RANK and RANKL presented strong expression in delayed replantation, suggesting effective participation at the beginning of root resorption, since at 60 days the immunostained cells were discreet.

Observability Methods in Sensor SchedulingJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: Modern measurement schemes for linear dynamical systems are typically designed so that different sensors can be scheduled to be used at each time step. To determine which sensors to use, various metrics have been suggested. One possible such metric is the observability of the system. Observability is a binary condition determining whether a finite number of measurements suffice to recover the initial state. However to employ observability for sensor scheduling, the binary definition needs to be expanded so that one can measure how observable a system is with a particular measurement scheme, i.e. one needs a metric of observability. Most methods utilizing an observability metric are about sensor selection and not for sensor scheduling. In this dissertation we present a new approach to utilize the observability for sensor scheduling by employing the condition number of the observability matrix as the metric and using column subset selection to create an algorithm to choose which sensors to use at each time step. To this end we use a rank revealing QR factorization algorithm to select sensors. Several numerical experiments are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Applied Mathematics 2015

Automatic Text Summarization Using Importance of Sentences for Email CorpusJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: With the advent of Internet, the data being added online is increasing at enormous rate. Though search engines are using IR techniques to facilitate the search requests from users, the results are not effective towards the search query of the user. The search engine user has to go through certain webpages before getting at the webpage he/she wanted. This problem of Information Overload can be solved using Automatic Text Summarization. Summarization is a process of obtaining at abridged version of documents so that user can have a quick view to understand what exactly the document is about. Email threads from W3C are used in this system. Apart from common IR features like Term Frequency, Inverse Document Frequency, Term Rank, a variation of page rank based on graph model, which can cluster the words with respective to word ambiguity, is implemented. Term Rank also considers the possibility of co-occurrence of words with the corpus and evaluates the rank of the word accordingly. Sentences of email threads are ranked as per features and summaries are generated. System implemented the concept of pyramid evaluation in content selection. The system can be considered as a framework for Unsupervised Learning in text summarization. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2015

Caracterização, avaliação e classificação dos pulverizadores autopropelidos produzidos no Brasil / Characterization, evaluation and classification of self-propelled sprayers produced in BrazilCasali, André Luis 24 July 2015 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Brazil is considered the largest consumer of pesticides in the world. To apply these inputs are used, in many cases, hydraulic self-propelled sprayer boom. In Brazil there are few tools that assist the farmer in choosing the ideal model of self-propelled sprayer, optimizing purchasing and reducing costs. Considering the lack of evaluative material from these machines, the central objective of this thesis is to establish a classification system for self-propelled sprayers sold in Brazil, from its theoretical operating capacity and also perform evaluations of some of these specific machine systems. For that, a classification system based on the combined theoretical operational capacity was created, as were tests conducted as the sound pressure inside the cabin of machines in operation and was also evaluated the preview percentage boom. For it was developed an equipment (View Simulator Operator) that simulates an operator sitting in the spray seat. We identified six different types of sprays configuration sold in Brazil, these six types differ as to the boom position, cabin, spray tank and engine. If one can assign advantages and disadvantages to each type of configuration. Considering the 14 brands operating in the Brazilian market and adding models each offers are available 42 models of self-propelled sprayers designed for use in Brazil grain crops. By applying the rating system created in this thesis, the models of self-propelled sprayers manufactured in Brazil were divided into four classes (I, II, III and IV). With increasing class tended to increase the clearance of sprayers, as well as increasing the size of the boom, operation speed and the size of the spray tank, however these items when evaluated independently do not justify the step increase. Regarding the measured sound pressure in the cabin of sprayers with different engine positions, significant differences were observed between the assessed machines, with lower sound pressure on machines with rear engine. As for the percentage of viewing the boom, the machine with the highest visibility has in its central cabin configuration and back boom.

Principal component (PCA) and factor analysis (FA) are widely used in data processing to reduce dimensionality. However, few studies have used these methods in a set of important traits in Nelore cattle for the purpose of modeling the covariance structure data. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth, carcass and meat quality traits in Nellore males, using different multivariate models to reduce the dimensionality data. A total of 3.865; 4.121; 4.109; 4.188; 4.123 3.320 and 16.575 records, hot carcass weight (HCW), 12-13th rib eye area (REA), backfat thickness (BF), marbling score (MS), warner-wraztler wear force (WBSF), lipid content (LC), and weight at 550 days (W550), respectively, were used. The analyzes were performed using five models: standard multi-characteristic, three reduced-rank models, and adjusted the first three (PC3), four (PC4) and five (PC5) genetic main components, and a model using factor analysis with three (FA3) factors. The models were compared by the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Schwarz Bayesian Criterion (BIC), taking into account the parameters number. The random effects of the direct and residual additive genetic and the fixed effects of the contemporaneous group and the linear effect of animal age on slaughter were considered as covariate, except for yearling weight. The analysis models of genetic factors and main components selected by both selection criteria were PC3 (BIC), PC4 (AIC) and FA3 (AIC and BIC), with 46, 50 and 53 parameters, respectively. However, the model that most approached the standard multi-characteristic model was PC4, and is therefore most appropriate due to the similarity of covariance estimates. Estimates of heritability ranged from 0.06 (LP) to 0.31 (AOL) with MV and 0.04 (LP) to 0.30 (AOL) with PC4. The highest estimates of genetic correlations were among the characteristics PCQ x SF, PCQ x PS and MARM x LP, being similar in the MV and PC4 models. The highest estimates of phenotypic correlations were among the weight and AOL (PS x SF), (PS x AOL) and (SF x AOL) traits. In general, four main components were required to model the structure of the genetic covariances for growth, carcass and meat quality traits. The reduced rank model indicated by the AIC (PC4) reduced the parameters number to be estimated by 21.4%, without decreasing the quality of the adjustment. / CNPq: 184428-1
