Waste tyre management problems in South Africa and the possible opportunities that can be created through the recycling thereof

Mahlangu, Mpanyana Lucas 04 1900 (has links)
The research work critically analyzed the factors responsible for imprudent waste tyre management in South Africa. As an approach to determine the complexity of the problem, questionnaires were sent to one hundred and sixty (160) respondents in conjunction with interviews. Perusal of literature and interaction with industry involved in waste tyre processing to further gain knowledge of the problem and possible solutions that can be solicited to address the problem. Findings revealed that, lack of clear, focused legislation that guide the handling, disposal and processing of waste tyres remain the challenge. It is also deduced that recycling of waste tyres can provide economic benefits and opportunities. It is recommended that South Africa develop appropriate legislation that deals with handling, treatment and disposal of waste tyres, develop an incentive programme to set up initiatives as well as developing skilled and capacitated enforcement agency. / Environmental Sciences / M.A. (Environmental Management)

Étude thermomécanique avancée de différents types d’enrobés recyclés tièdes avec additifs / Advanced thermomechanical study of different types of warm recycled asphalt with additives

Pham, Nguyen Hoang 12 December 2014 (has links)
This PhD dissertation is part of the collaboration between the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME), the companies Arkema and Malet and the Ecole Nationale de Travaux Publics de l’Etat (ENTPE). The aim of this dissertation is to study the thermo-mechanical behavior of asphalt mixes, specifically warm mix asphalts with and without Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in order to predict their fatigue life and to optimize their design by targeting sustainable development. Seven types of asphalt mixes are studied. They differ in their mixing method, RAP content, additives used and their content. Two types of mixing methods are studied: Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), which serves as a reference, and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). Three RAP contents are considered: 0%, 30% and 50%. Two types of additives provided by Arkema are used : ETIMA (E) and ETIMA-BIO (B) with two contents for each of them (0% and 0.4%). The use of warm mix asphalt helps significantly reducing both energy consumption and the impact on health and environment. These innovations are significant contributions with respect to issues of sustainable development and environmental preservation. Four types of laboratory tests were performed: complex modulus tests, fatigue tests, Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Tests (TSRST) and wave propagation tests. In the Linear ViscoElastic (LVE) behavior domain, complex modulus tests were performed on a wide range of temperatures (from -25°C to 45°C) and frequencies (from 0.03 Hz to 10 Hz). For each material, two specimens were tested. Values of complex modulus and complex Poisson’s ratio were obtained and modeled using the 2S2P1D analogies model, developed in the Laboratoire Génie Civil et Bâtiement (LGCB) of ENTPE. It was observed that this model can correctly simulate the LVE behavior of asphalt mixes. Fatigue behavior was studied by analyzing fatigue tests results. For each material, four or five specimens were tested. Four different failure criteria were used in order to evaluate fatigue life of materials. Low temperature behavior of materials was characterized using TSRST. For each material, three replicates were performed. Finally, wave propagation tests were carried out. The method to determine the time of flight of « P » and « S » waves and the impact resonance method are presented. These tests provide a non-destructive method to characterize materials, which easy to perform. Using those methods, values of complex modulus and Poisson's ratio of tested materials can be estimated. It is to be underlined that the tests performed in this PhD allow to obtaining some parameters which are required for asphalt pavement design. An important result obtained in this study is that warm mix asphalt combined with RAP and additives (ETIMA ou ETIMA-BIO) could perform as well as hot mix asphalt.

Spatiotemporal Analyses of Recycled Water Production

Archer, Jana E. 01 May 2017 (has links)
Increased demands on water supplies caused by population expansion, saltwater intrusion, and drought have led to water shortages which may be addressed by use of recycled water as recycled water products. Study I investigated recycled water production in Florida and California during 2009 to detect gaps in distribution and identify areas for expansion. Gaps were detected along the panhandle and Miami, Florida, as well as the northern and southwestern regions in California. Study II examined gaps in distribution, identified temporal change, and located areas for expansion for Florida in 2009 and 2015. Production increased in the northern and southern regions of Florida but decreased in Southwest Florida. Recycled water is an essential component water management a broader adoption of recycled water will increase water conservation in water-stressed coastal communities by allocating recycled water for purposes that once used potable freshwater.

Metropolitan Operated District for Sewage Effluent - Irrigation Water Exchange

Cluff, C. Brent, DeCook, K. James 20 April 1974 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1974 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 19-20, 1974, Flagstaff, Arizona / A plan for the reuse of sewage effluent is proposed for the city of Tucson, Arizona. Several kinds of use would be possible, but utilization for irrigation of existing farmland in the Avra-Marana area seems particularly attractive for several reasons: (1) conveyance can be accomplished by gravity flow, (2) no tertiary treatment is required for the presently grown crops, (3) the nutrients in the effluent would be better used, and (4) effluent use would reduce the pumpage of high quality groundwater, conserving it for municipal or other uses. An exchange of wastewater for groundwater for use in the city system is seen as a good alternative to the present practice of the city purchasing farmland in Avra valley in order to acquire the groundwater for conveyance to the Tucson basin. Objectives to maximize the quantity and efficiency of wastewater use may not appear compatible with the profit maximization motive of the individual farmer, and suitable provisions will have to be written into wastewater sales agreements to assure coordination between user and supplier.

Application of Direct Osmosis: Possibilities for Reclaiming Wellton-Mohawk Drainage Water

Moody, C. D., Kessler, J. O. 12 April 1975 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1975 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 11-12, 1975, Tempe, Arizona / A direct osmosis plant can reclaim twenty to thirty thousand acre feet of Wellton-Mohawk brackish drainage water using no more nitrogen fertilizer than is normally used in the Yuma, Coachella valley, Imperial Valley and the bordering Mexican areas. On a per-acre basis ammonium sulfate-driven direct osmosis can reclaim about one percent of the total irrigation requirement from 3000 ppm brackish water. In addition to the ammonium sulfate-driven direct osmosis efficiency, the by-product energy recovery of the manufacture of the fertilizer and the low technology inherent in direct osmosis processes make direct osmosis an appealing water reclaiming process.

Salvaging Wasted Waters for Desert-Household Gardening

Fink, D. H., Ehrler, W. L. 15 April 1978 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1978 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 14-15, 1978, Flagstaff, Arizona / With the objective of determining if sufficient water would be salvaged by a typical desert, urban-household from normally wasted sources associated with the lot and household to adequately irrigate a garden and orchard, a 2000 sq ft house on a typical one fifth acre lot in three cities having climates similar to Phoenix, Tucson, or Prescott, Arizona was hypothesized and the amount of water available for yard watering calculated, provided that (1) only rainfall was available, (2) rainfall-runoff from covered areas associated with or adjacent to the lot was salvaged (roof, street, alley etc.), (3) gray-water from the household was utilized, (4) a portion of the lot was waterproofed to concentrate the runoff on the untreated portion, and (5) various combinations of the above were utilized to increase the amount of available water. It is demonstrated that these sources could be used singly or in combination to obtain the required amount of water with the actual amount available depending upon the precipitation, runoff and runon areas, runoff efficiency of the contributing area, and the number of people in the household. A number of horticultural plants are suggested that should best fit such an irregular irrigation scheme.

Propriétés thermomécaniques d’enrobés multi-recyclés / Thermomechanical propertis of bitiminous mixtures multi-recycled

Pedraza, Alvaro 06 March 2018 (has links)
Reuse of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is considered as one of the main solutions to cope with the objectives of worldwide sustainable development. In this way, the reuse of RAP in bituminous mixtures has been matter of study in previous papers (Chen et al., 2009; Kaur et al., 2013; Mogawer et al., 2012; Ru-bio et al., 2012; Sias Daniel et al., 2013; Valdés et al., 2011) and had concluded be economically profitable as well as had demonstrated the durability of the tested materials. Nowadays, new topics overcome dealing with how increase the RAP content and how many times RAP could be recycled. In France, a collaborative research and development project called “Multi-recycling of warm foam bitu-minous mixtures” (MURE) have brought together all the stakeholders involved in road construction. The pro-gram has run since March 2014. The scientific part of MURE project is IMPROVMURE project (Innovation for Materials and Processes for Improving the Multi-Recycling of Mixes). The overall budget of the project were €4.7M, €2.3M of which been provided by the ANR (National Re-search Agency) in the framework of the IMPROVMURE project, which has gotten under way in March 2014 and its main goal of characterizing the remobilization of the binder from recycled materials was the evalua-tion of the durability of mixes with the addition of binder. Thus, one objective of this project is to determine the thermomechanical properties of multi-recycled bi-tuminous mixtures, so in the context of this goal the current study was made. Likewise this investigation was a collaboration between the Tribology and System Dynamics Laboratory (LTDS) of the University of Lyon/ENTPE (“Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat” ) and the French company EIFFAGE Infra-structures. For this study 15 types of bituminous mixtures were tested, the bituminous mixtures were produced in the laboratory and construction site, also two different techniques were studied for mixtures elaboration: hot and warm using foamed bitumen in both cases, the RAP content on these were 0%, 40%, 70% and even close to 100% produced after several recycling operations (up to 3 cycles). All bituminous mixtures have 3 invariants: the first is the same aggregate grading curves (except the bituminous mixture with 100% of RAP). The second one is the total binder content (5.4% in total weight). The last is classified as BBSG-03 0/10 bitu- 15 minous mixture, as is specified in the European standards for classification of bituminous mixtures (NF EN 13108-1 - 2007). Three domains of behaviour were studied: Linear Viscoelastic behaviour (LVE), cracking behaviour at low temperature and the fracture behaviour at low temperature. The LVE was studied considering complex modulus tests on bituminous mixtures and were performed in tension/compression on cylindrical samples, thus LVE behaviour was then modelled with 2S2P1D rheological model, developed at Uni. of Lyon / ENTPE, for the other hand cracking behaviour at low temperature was studied considering Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Tests (TSRST), and finally fracture behaviour at low temperature was studied with the crack propagation tests as a monotonic loading.

Vlastnosti asfaltových směsí typu SMA s R-materiálem / Properties of asphalt mixtures of SMA-type with RAP

Acuna Subia, Luis Carlos January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to verify and compare the properties of bituminous stone mastic asphalt, namely SMA 11S with modified PMB 45 / 80-55 asphalt binder or 50/70 road bitumen binder with rubber granulate. Comparison of properties is performed using functional tests. The thesis is divided into the theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the familiarization with the use of the SMA mixture, the selected concepts concerning recycling of non-leveled roads are described and described. Attention is paid especially to the recycling of roads in the Czech Republic with an emphasis on hot recycling on the incinerator, which allows increased dosing of Reclaimed Asphalt into asphalt mixtures. In the practical part, the results of the functional tests of the SMA 11S mixture, which have been taken from the test section, are processed and evaluated.
