Expert vs. Novice: Problem Decomposition/Recomposition in Engineering DesignTing, Song 01 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to investigate the differences of using problem decomposition and problem recomposition among dyads of engineering experts, dyads of engineering seniors, and dyads of engineering freshmen. Fifty participants took part in this study. Ten were engineering design experts, 20 were engineering seniors, and 20 were engineering freshmen. Participants worked in dyads to complete an engineering design challenge within an hour. The entire design process was video and audio recorded. After the design session, members participated in a group interview.
This study used protocol analysis as the methodology. Video and audio data were transcribed, segmented, and coded. Two coding systems including the FBS ontology and “levels of the problem” were used in this study. A series of statistical techniques were used to analyze data. Interview data and participants’ design sketches also worked as supplemental data to help answer the research questions.
By analyzing the quantitative and qualitative data, it was found that students used less problem decomposition and problem recomposoition than engineer experts in engineering design. This result implies that engineering education should place more importance on teaching problem decomposition and problem recomposition. Students were found to spend less cognitive effort when considering the problem as a whole and interactions between subsystems than engineer experts. In addition, students were also found to spend more cognitive effort when considering details of subsystems. These results showed that students tended to use dept-first decomposition and experts tended to use breadth-first decomposition in engineering design. The use of Function (F), Behavior (B), and Structure (S) among engineering experts, engineering seniors, and engineering freshmen was compared on three levels. Level 1 represents designers consider the problem as an integral whole, Level 2 represents designers consider interactions between subsystems, and Level 3 represents designers consider details of subsystems. The results showed that students used more S on Level 1 and 3 but they used less F on Level 1 than engineering experts. The results imply that engineering curriculum should improve the teaching of problem definition in engineering design because students need to understand the problem before solving it.

Spectral recomposition and multicomponent seismic image registrationCai, Yihua, 1978- 20 July 2012 (has links)
Spectral recomposition splits a seismic spectrum into Ricker components. It provides a tool
for imaging and mapping temporal bed thicknesses and geologic discontinuities. I propose an application of separable, nonlinear, least-squares estimation in spectral recomposition. Employing the
Gauss-Newton method, this approach estimates fundamental signal parameters such as peak frequencies and amplitudes. I applied spectral recomposition to multicomponent seismic data, which provides new perspectives of seismic attributes and multicomponent data interpretation. Correlating
S-wave reflection with P -wave reflection is one of the very first steps in multicomponent data interpretation. In a given stratigraphic interval of a geologic section, registration correlates P and S-wave
profiles to determine ts /tp ratios, which are equivalent to Vp /Vs ratios for vertical propagation paths. The registration process is largely driven by the availability of dipole sonic logs. However, dipole sonic logs are not as common as standard sonic logs and tend to be affected by various borehole factors. Therefore, new techniques are needed for accurate P P and P S correlation and registration.
Assuming P P and P S reflection events have been correctly positioned laterally in migrated images, and the difference between P P wave image and P S wave image can be explained only by vertical transformation, I adopt a multistep approach to register PP and PS images automatically. Setting PP time as a coordinate system, I was able to squeeze P S traces accordingly while keeping the
signal pattern of P S wave data. Local seismic attributes, such as the local similarity, help improve registration accuracy. / text

Secolarizzazione e ricomposizione del sacro in Italia : il caso delle comunità parrocchiali della Garfagnana / Sécularisation et recomposition du sacré en Italie : le cas des communautés paroissiales de la Garfagnana / Secularisation and recomposition of the sacred in Italy : the case of parish communities in GarfagnanaRossi, Chiara 24 March 2016 (has links)
This study, included in the wider debate regarding the secularisation process, mainly focuses on the ways in which nowadays secularisation and de-secularisation can coexist in a specific context, convening, at times adding to each other, and thus generating, through a process of decomposition and recomposition of the sacred, unavoidable consequences on individual actions and collective dynamics. Through an ethnographic approach, based on inter-knowledge, on participant observation techniques and on numerous in-depth interviews, the research examines the ongoing changes within a transitioning rural universe, which is remodelling spaces and structures of its religious belief system. The research was carried out in a small valley in Northern Italy (Garfagnana) and the main focus of the study was the parish. In this context, this institution has been over the centuries an important reference point, not only for the religious universe but also for the civil community and still today represents the privileged means by which the church creates and maintains the networkof bonds with its worshippers. The analysis of the dynamics by which , within a parish community, these bonds are preserved, recreated and nurtured has led us towards understanding the catholic identity of this particular region, highlighting the modalities, the motivations and the consequences of religious beliefs, on both an individual and collective level, of the many categories of participants.

Dynamics of organized action and system effects in production of sports intercommunal policy. The case of “Communauté d’Agglomération du Bassin d’Arcachon Sud”Bonneau, Lise 09 December 2014 (has links)
Links between local authorities in the realm of Sports is now a reality. From a logic of opportunity to a logic of project, Intermunicipal coopération on the subject is developing in a heterogeneous way, depending on strategies of the local elected representatives, who are defending their own interests and are mainly worried of keeping their own prerogatives in local affairs. The learning curve of « intermunicipality work » requires a long process of appropriation, confronted with a resistance to a change of existing references. The governance of the world of sports is thus affected by the rationalization of public action and pernicious effects stemming form improbable opportunities, which are coming from new governmental laws and regulations. Beyond the consequences of this system, interactions between the main players will impact the definition and the establishment of the Sports intercommunal Policy, thus making more complex the regulation of local sports politics.

This study focuses on the narrative processes of travel story of Nerval, in terms of intertextuality and autobiography. In the first part, we discuss of the travel story in general, with a focus on the subjective and autobiographical literary travel : its special status as literary genre, its chronological develpment, its forms, its intertextuality and its autobiographical nature. In the second part, we study specificity of the travel story of Nerval on the narrative level, that of intertextuality and that of autobiographical writing, according to diffrents types of Nerval’s travels : realistic travel (Voyage en Orient, Lorely), eccentric travel (Les Faux Saulniers), parodic travel (Les Nuits d’octobre), autobiographical travel (Promenades et Souvenirs) and interior travel (Aurélia). Finally, in the third part, we analyse the poetics of travel writing of Nerval in the context of the modernity of his writing, considering the mixture of forms, the intertextual practices (reference, rewriting and reorganzation), the originality of fanciful traveler, the poetic and dialogic stroy and realistic writing.

Le cinéma libanais d’après guerre : Construction de mémoire et recomposition identitaire / The post-war lebanese cinema : building of memory and identity recompositionEid, Robert 22 November 2010 (has links)
After the war in Lebanon [1975-1990 ], young film-makers refuse to ignore the past and work by means of their movies to restore a wholesome memory. The present research studies the new films configurations of the post-war Lebanese cinema, characterized by a memorial and countable retrospective within bygone days. By leaning on a cinematic corpus of about twenty movies, analyzed as material and symbolic tracks, the various parts of this research investigate the convergences and the problems which put the dialectic Memory - history through the representation. The study also scrutinizes the tracks of the memory by going through the processes relative to the conflict, to the work of mourning and the oblivion by questioning the capacities of the Lebanese cinema, to calibrate its potential of expression and its capacity to analyze the setbacks of a bruised society. The paths of this research will also examine the representation of Beirut, as anthropomorphic and symbolic city. In last part, the study approaches the profiles of a symptomatic subject in search of its identity at the end of the war in Lebanon.

Fragmentation and recomposition in John Fowles’s fiction : towards a resolution of the postmodern crisis ?Saubion, Sonia 19 November 2011 (has links)
The contemporary imaginary has given rise to an aesthetics of fragmentation which is characterized by the dissolution of the self in search of an identity in a world deprived of stability and landmarks soon after the trauma caused by the war and nuclear threat. The refusal to follow the principle of linearity, together with the play involved in intertextuality and intergenericity, the disruption of representational patterns underlying traditional realistic novels, favour the display of reader responses at the expense of the harmony of utterances. This thesis, which covers the whole of Fowles’s fiction since 1963, aims at diagnosing the symptoms of the aforementioned crisis by means of a study including metatextual, narratorial, linguistic, philosophical, mythocritical and psychoanalytical tools. We will see how the author, the narrators, the protagonists on stage consider coming to terms with their existential conflicts and returning to a reality they have progressively dissociated themselves from. The latter can either choose to disintegrate the « real » in order to get a better apprehension of it and then to put the scattered fragments together again so as to appropriate them, while projecting their selves through an ideal and a fictional identity, which paves the way for their individuation. Such an evolution from dissensus to consensus conveys the humanistic vein of a work which endeavours not only to have the individual take up with his/her more authentic self but also to reconcile him/her with the others within a universe gaining in coherence.

Ducke) Barneby) plantations and evidence of performance to optimize the silviculture in deforested areas in the AmazonMonteiro, Daiana Carolina Antunes 22 October 2013 (has links)
Today\'s greatest challenge is to meet the growing demand for raw materials in a responsible way, maintaining the functionality of the natural systems for actual and future generations. In Amazon, historically the different uses of the land have damaged the standards of forest covering and diversity. The State of Para showed, from 2004 to 2012, the biggest deforestation rates in the region, accounting for 22% of the state, resulting in biodiversity losses and, consequently, in the increase of degraded landscapes. Therefore, the silviculture of native species presents a potentially mitigating activity, recovering modified areas, turning them productive, contributing to the conservation genetics, to the maintenance of environmental services and the creation of jobs and income. To achieve an efficient and effective production there are fundamental assumptions like the identification of high yield genetic material, of species compatible with the edaphoclimatic conditions, of the silvicutural and ecology aspects of the species. This paper aims to identify preferential topoclimatic conditions for the parica (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber ex. Ducke) Barneby), a native species of the Amazon planted in large-scale in Brazil, for wood-laminating and derivatives. Georreference information of natural occurrence was used and the topoclimatic conditions prevailing in these occurrences were evaluated. To identify preferential rates multivariate techniques were applied considering the evidence obtained on the field. Using solutions of algebra maps on a Geographic Information System platform (SIG), integrations of topoclimatic variables were realized selecting preferred and limiting ranges to the species. As a result, we obtained the zoning showing three zones, of low, medium and high potential for the parica, in the State of Para. The subsequent analyses were realized using field data of parica plantation in the municipality of Dom Eliseu, in southeastern Para. Supervised digital classifications were realized using the orbital images LANDSAT/TM-5 of the 2010 to identify the patterns of land use and land cover in the municipality. The parica plantations were spatialized on zoning map to potential of municipality which made possible the analysis of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) answers extracted from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) remote sensor, in different periods of water deficit (AWC 300mm), applying a test of average and a profile analysis, using univariate and multivariate techniques. A tendency has been found in the parica vigor with a decrease from 0.85 to 0.68, in the months of greater water deficit, as well as differences between plantings in areas of high potential and those of medium potential. In addition, differences in dendrometric increase, in the transition of dry to rainy season, have been evaluated in a significance level of 5%. From this result, four silvicultural scenarios were established considering the driving forces in the parica\'s production chain. The high potential topoclimatic areas express higher spectral answer, indicating a higher water supply in the soil for the parica. Scenarios of forest plantation in high potential zones are evidences of economic, social and environmental gains maximization. With those results, we hope to subsidize strategies of risk reduction in plantings of native species to consolidate an economy of low carbon emission in the Amazon, in conformity with the current Forest Code.
