Cette thèse traite du problème de la redistribution dynamique parallèle efficace de la charge pour les problèmes numériques de très grande taille. Nous présentons tout d'abord un état de l'art des algorithmes permettant de résoudre les problèmes du partitionnement, du repartitionnement, du placement statique et du re-placement. Notre première contribution vise à étudier, dans un cadre séquentiel, les caractéristiques algorithmiques souhaitables pour les méthodes parallèles de repartitionnement. Nous y présentons notre contribution à la conception d'un schéma multi-niveaux k-aire pour le calcul sequentiel de repartitionnements. La partie la plus exigeante de cette adaptation concerne la phase d'expansion. L'une de nos contributions majeures a été de nous inspirer des méthodes d'influence afin d'adapter un algorithme de raffinement par diffusion au problème du repartitionnement.Notre deuxième contribution porte sur la mise en oeuvre de ces méthodes sur machines parallèles. L'adaptation du schéma multi-niveaux parallèle a nécessité une évolution des algorithmes et des structures de données mises en oeuvre pour le partitionnement. Ce travail est accompagné d'une analyse expérimentale, qui est rendue possible grâce à la mise en oeuvre des algorithmes considérés au sein de la bibliothèque Scotch.

Behaviour of continuous concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars

The non-corrodible nature of FRP bars along with their high strength, light weight and ease of installation made it attractive as reinforcement especially for structures exposed to aggressive environment. In addition, the transparency of FRP bars to magnetic and electrical fields makes them an ideal alternative to traditional steel reinforcement in applications sensitive to electromagnetic fields such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) units. Continuous concrete beams are commonly-used elements in structures such as parking garages and overpasses, which might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of de-icing salts. In such structures, using the non-corrodible FRP bars is a viable alternative to avoid steel-corrosion problems. However, the linear-elastic behaviour of FRP materials makes the ability of continuous beams to redistribute loads and moments questionable. The objective of this research project is to investigate the flexural behaviour of continuous concrete beams reinforced with FRP and their capability of moment redistribution. An experimental program was conducted at the University of Manitoba to realize the research objectives. Ten full-scale continuous concrete beams were constructed and tested to failure in the laboratory. The specimens had a rectangular cross-section of 200×300 mm and continuous over two spans of 2,800 mm each. The main investigated parameters were the amount and material of longitudinal reinforcement, the amount and material of transverse reinforcement and the spacing of used stirrups. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible if the reinforcement configuration is chosen properly, and is improved by increasing the amount of transverse reinforcement. A finite element investigation was conducted using ANSYS-software. A 3-D model was created to simulate the behaviour of continuous beams reinforced with FRP. The model was verified against the experimental results obtained from the present study. This verified model was used to investigate the effect of the concrete compressive strength, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, midspan-to-middle support reinforcement ratio and the amount of transverse reinforcement on the behaviour of FRP-reinforced beams. The analytical results of this parametric investigation along with the experimental results were used to propose an allowable limit for moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams.

Two-phase flow in a mini-size impacting tee junction with a rectangular cross-section

An experimental study was conducted in order to investigate the two-phase-flow phenomena in a mini-size, horizontal impacting tee junction. The test section was machined in an acrylic block with a rectangular cross-section of 1.87-mm height × 20-mm width on the inlet and outlet sides. Air-water mixtures at 200 kPa (abs) and room temperature were used as the test fluids. Four flow regimes were identified visually: bubbly, plug, churn, and annular over the ranges of gas and liquid superficial velocities of 0.04 ≤ JG ≤ 10 m/s and 0.02 ≤ JL ≤ 0.7 m/s, respectively, and a flow regime map was developed. The present flow-regime map was compared with several experimental maps. It is thought from those comparisons that the channel height has a more significant role in determining the flow-regime boundaries than the hydraulic diameter. The two-phase fully-developed pressure gradient was measured in the inlet and the outlet sides of the junction for six different inlet conditions and various mass splits at the junction. Comparisons were conducted between the present data and former correlations. The correlations that agreed best with the present data were identified. Five single-phase test sets were performed. In each set of experiments, the pressure distribution was measured for the whole range of the mass split ratio, Wi/W1. The pressure drop at the junction at each value of Wi/W1 was calculated. Values of the pressure-loss coefficient, , were calculated at various Wi/W1 and inlet Reynolds number. The pressure-loss coefficient was strongly dependent on the inlet Reynolds number in the laminar region, while the results for the turbulent region were almost coincident. Numerical simulations of single-phase flow in an impacting tee junction of identical dimensions to that of the present test-section were performed to confirm the results of the experiments. Phase-redistribution experiments were conducted covering all four inlet flow regimes and models were proposed for predicting the experimental data. Good agreement in terms of magnitude and trend was obtained between the present experimental data and the proposed model. New correlations were developed for the single- and two-phase pressure drop in the junction.

Changing population distribution in Sweden : long term trends and contemporary tendencies

The aim of the thesis is to describe and analyse the population redistribution in Sweden at different geographical levels from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The analysis is approached in three different ways. First, the redistribution at different geographical levels is analysed (papers I and II). Second, the changing accessibility between people (interpersonal accessibility) is analysed from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century (paper II). Third, the impacts of fertility, mortality, internal migration, international migration and geographical variations in age composition on population distribution are analysed for the last decades (papers I, III and IV). Measurements of concentration have been used in order to analyse the changing population distribution. For the analysis of changing interpersonal accessibility the average population within the daily reach has been calculated for different times. In order to analyse the impacts of fertility, mortality, migration and geographical variations in age composition the actual redistribution of the population is compared with the redistribution generated by a number of counterfactual scenarios. To analyse the impact of international migration the changing distribution of the population in different immigrant groups is compared to the distribution of the Swedish population. Some conclusions drawn from the thesis are: 1. There is no overall trend in the population redistribution towards either concentration or dispersion. The redistribution pattern depends on the time perspective and the geographical level chosen. The population has been both concentrated and dispersed since the beginning of the 19th century. This applies to all investigated geographical levels. In the five identified phases of the redistribution the most common pattern is that concentration and dispersion of the population exist simultaneously on different geographical levels. The total effect of the redistribution between 1810 and 1990 is that today the population is more dispersed at macro-regional level, while it is more concentrated at local and regional level. 2. Based on assumptions about the daily reach, an average person today has access to about 100 times more people locally compared with the beginning of the 19th century. The most important process for the increased accessibility has been the redistribution of the population. The process that has had the least impact is the assumed increase in daily reach. However the importance of the investigated processes changes over time. Since 1950 the increasing reach has been the most important process. However, the rate by which interpersonal accessibility increases has slowed down since 1950. 3. The main demographic factor behind the redistribution since 1970 is the geographical differences in age composition and its effects on the natural population change. It is demonstrated that this factor lies behind the trend towards increasing concentration in Sweden, while the impact of migration affects the fluctuations from this trend to a greater extent. 4. The study shows that immigration concentrates the population, while the internal migration during the 1970s and periodically during the 1980s dispersed the population. However during the 1990s the internal migration has had a concentrating effect on the spatial distribution of the population. / <p>Diss. USING MANUAL DEFOLIATION TO SIMULATE SOYBEAN RUST: EFFECT ON GROWTH AND YIELD FORMATION

Field experiments were conducted in Kentucky and Louisiana in 2008 and 2009 (split-plot in a randomized complete block design with four replications) to investigate it is possible to simulate with manual defoliation the effect of soybean rust (SBR) (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. and P. Syd) injury on a healthy soybean [Glycine max, (L.) Merr.] canopy, understand how defoliation affects the growth dynamics and canopy light interception, and if defoliation affectsleaf senescence and nitrogen remobilization during the seed-filling period. Two manual defoliation treatments based on changes in effective leaf area index (ELAI) (calculated as the reduction in leaf area equivalent to SBR-induced premature leaf abscission, loss in green leaf area, and reduction in photosynthetic capacity of diseased leaves) in infected canopies in Brazil were used to simulate SBR infection at growth stage R2 (full flowering) and R5 (beginning of seed-fill). Both defoliation treatments reduced yield in all experiments and the reduction was larger for the treatments at growth stage R2. The yield losses were equivalent to that observed in infected soybean canopies in Brazil. This suggests that a system of manual defoliation to simulate changes in effective leaf area duration shows promise as a tool to simulate the impact of SBR on soybean yield. The radiation use efficiency and crop growth rate from growth stage R2 to R5 were not influenced by defoliation. Defoliation started at growth stage R2 reduced seed number per unit area, while defoliation started at growth stage R5 reduced seed size due to shortening the seed-fill duration and a lower seed growth rate. There is no evidence that manual defoliation affected leaf senescence or nitrogen redistribution to the seed. This study found that the reduction of light interception by SBR was the main reason for the reductions in soybean growth and yield.

Alloy element redistribution during sintering of powder metallurgy steels

Homogenization of alloying elements is desired during sintering of powder metallurgy components. The redistribution processes such as penetration of liquid phase into the interparticle/grain boundaries of solid particles and subsequent solid-state  diffusion of alloy element(s) in the base powder, are important for the effective homogenization of alloy element(s) during liquid phase sintering of the mixed powders. The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of alloy element redistribution processes and their effect on the dimensional properties of the compact by means of numerical and experimental techniques. The phase field model coupled with Navier-Stokes equations is used for the simulations of dynamic wetting of millimeter- and micrometer-sized metal drops and liquid phase penetration into interparticle boundaries. The simulations of solid particle rearrangement under the action of capillary forces exerted by the liquid phase are carried out by using the equilibrium equation for a linear elastic material. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculations are performed to predict the phase diagram and the diffusion distances respectively. The test materials used for the experimental studies are three different powder mixes; Fe-2%Cu, Fe-2%Cu-0.5%C, and Fe-2%(Cu-2%Ni-1.5%Si)-0.5%C. Light optical microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and dilatometry are used to study the microstructure, kinetics of the liquid phase penetration, solid-state diffusion of the Cu, and the dimensional changes during sintering. The wetting simulations are verified by matching the spreading experiments of millimeter-sized metal drops and it is observed that wetting kinetics is much faster for a micrometer-sized drop compared to the millimeter-sized drop. The simulations predicted the liquid phase penetration kinetics and the motion of solid particles during the primary rearrangement stage of liquid phase sintering in agreement with the analytical model. Microscopy revealed that the C addition delayed the penetration of the Cu rich liquid phase into interparticle/grain boundaries of Fe particles, especially into the grain boundaries of large Fe particles, and consequently the Cu diffusion in Fe is also delayed. We propose that the relatively lower magnitude of the sudden volumetric expansion in the master alloy system could be due to the continuous melting of liquid forming master alloy particles. / <p>QC 20140515</p>

The Economic Impact of Expenditures by Local Governments and Nonprofits on Property Values: Evidence from 41 Large Texas Cities

This dissertation uses property values to investigate the economic effect of public expenditures for operations and capital improvements on place value. Given the increasing role of nonprofit services in augmenting those of cities and school districts, the dissertation research investigates whether nonprofit expenditures join those of cities and school districts as Tiebout commodities, thereby contributing to place value. Furthermore, the research examines whether those expenditures contribute to reducing the inequities in the distribution of property wealth. The conceptual framework for the dissertation is the Tiebout model and its various extensions. The model proposes that individuals have different preferences for public goods and services, and there are many jurisdictions that vary in the services provided. Consequently, individuals shop around for the community that best matches their preferences and locate in the one that maximizes their utility. If the model correctly predicts households' behavior, then the quality of public goods and services provided by a community will affect its desirability. The more attractive a community, the higher the demand for its properties, which results in higher property values. The dissertation research finds that city public capital spending positively impacts property values in two ways. Property values respond positively to (1) the announcement of capital investments (i.e., ongoing capital expenditures), and (2) the amenity created when capital projects become operational (i.e., when operating expenditures are combined with capital stock). The results also show that nonprofit capital stock and spending on operations affect property values differently depending on the nonprofit category. The findings further reveal that local public and nonprofit spending benefit owners of lower and medium valued properties more than owners of higher valued properties. This finding suggests that local government and nonprofit spending contribute to reducing inequities in the distribution of property wealth.

Ditt, mitt eller vårt? : Bronsålderns ekonomiska system vid Pryssgården och Apalle

The Bronze Age in southern Sweden is a period that has seen a great deal of research for as long as archaeological studies have been undertaken in this country. While we have a rich material record and even many visible indicators of the time in the landscape, such as the rock carvings of Tanum and the many mounds dotting the landscape, many aspects of that society are relatively poorly understood. I´m mainly referring to the economic structures underpinning Bronze Age societies. This project will take the models of Wealth and Staple Finance Systems, developed by Timothy Earle and successfully tested in many equivalent contexts around the world, and apply them on Swedish settlement materials from the Bronze Age settlements of Pryssgården and Apalle. The study looks at site distribution patterns, the prevalence of prestige goods and the possible importance of external contacts in order to produce a reliable economic model of the Swedish Bronze Age. While some similarities in resource management are obvious, some relevant aspects were found to differ.
