Design Of Glass Structures: Effects Of Interlayer Types On Heat-treated Laminated Glass

Akdeniz, Verda 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Glass is an inherrently strong and elastic building material that allows the enclosure of spaces to provide both comfort and &aelig / sthetic appeal. It is evidently due recognition of these properties that has resulted in the current propensity to use it in ever larger sizes / and then with minimum&ndash / if not total absence&ndash / of visible supporting structure. It is, however, its lack of plastic behavior under stress&ndash / leading to catastrophic failure without warning&ndash / that has been the main drawback preventing its use as a structural material on its own. Ergo, the development of composite configurations with plastic interlayers, commonly known as structural glass. Contemporary working methods for glass have also been able to provide better structural characteristics&ndash / particularly after heat treatments, which reduce its vulnerability to cracking and brittle failure. In com-bination, these methods offer designers the possibility of using glass panels capable of acting as load-carrying structural elements. The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of glass-adhesive-glass composite, or laminated, elements and the use of glass as a structural material in light of their inherent strength properties. Here, an attempt was made to define the be-havior of interlayers in structural glass and to then prepare a selection guide. To this end, it was necessary to first gather information about the materials and design methods used to create glass structures. As the literature notes that such stresses are particularly important to structural glass design due to the inability of the material to flow plastically and to thus relieve high stresses, pertinent simulation techniques (e.g., finite element analysis) were then used to investigate shear transfer between glass panes and interlayers. These simulations allowed determination of stiffness with different types of interlayer for panes of different dimensions and orien-tation in respect to loading conditions. It was the results of these analyses that were finally compiled into the selection guide already noted. It is expected that these results will make a worthwhile contribution to developing glass structure design and its application in practice.

The Finite Element Method Solution Of Reaction-diffusion-advection Equations In Air Pollution

Turk, Onder 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
We consider the reaction-diffusion-advection (RDA) equations resulting in air pollution mod- eling problems. We employ the finite element method (FEM) for solving the RDA equations in two dimensions. Linear triangular finite elements are used in the discretization of problem domains. The instabilities occuring in the solution when the standard Galerkin finite element method is used, in advection or reaction dominated cases, are eliminated by using an adap- tive stabilized finite element method. In transient problems the unconditionally stable Crank- Nicolson scheme is used for the temporal discretization. The stabilization is also applied for reaction or advection dominant case in the time dependent problems. It is found that the stabilization in FEM makes it possible to solve RDA problems for very small diffusivity constants. However, for transient RDA problems, although the stabilization improves the solution for the case of reaction or advection dominance, it is not that pronounced as in the steady problems. Numerical results are presented in terms of graphics for some test steady and unsteady RDA problems. Solution of an air pollution model problem is also provided.

Energy efficiency : the regulatory framework for SADC and South Africa / Rachel Lekunze Kungwe

Angwe, Rachel Lekunze January 2014 (has links)
Energy is the main driving force behind all human activities. Energy use is blamed for its contribution to greenhouse gas, environmental degradation among others. Energy efficiency has been identified as an important tool to address these issues. Recognising the important role of energy efficiency, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) introduced policy measures to address energy efficiency at both regional and national levels. South Africa (a member state of SADC) followed by introducing policies, legislation, tax incentives and voluntary measures such as SANS standards and ISO 50001 to address energy use via energy efficiency. The aim of this study is to assess South Africa’s framework pertaining to energy efficiency and determine whether they correspond to the SADC energy frameworks. In this study, it is indicated that energy efficiency does not have a universally acceptable definition. SADC’s frameworks pertaining to energy efficiency are quite vague compared to South Africa’s policy framework. South Africa’s policies, legal frameworks and voluntary instruments correspond with the SADC frameworks and even go beyond these frameworks. It is recommended that SADC’s frameworks should specify measures of attaining energy efficiency within its mandated tools, urge member states to develop legislation as well as voluntary measures as means of attaining energy efficiency. The South African Minister of Energy on the other hand, should fulfil the mandate of the Electricity Regulation Act and the National Energy Act by enacting regulations pertaining to energy efficiency. Incentives for the introduction of voluntary energy efficiency measures should also be developed. / LLM (Environmental law and governance), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Preparation And Performance Of Membrane Electrode Assemblies With Nafion And Alternative Polymer Electrolyte Membranes

Sengul, Erce 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Hydrogen and oxygen or air polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is one of the most promising electrical energy conversion devices for a sustainable future due to its high efficiency and zero emission. Membrane electrode assembly (MEA), in which electrochemical reactions occur, is stated to be the heart of the fuel cell. The aim of this study was to develop methods for preparation of MEA with alternative polymer electrolyte membranes and compare their performances with the conventional Nafion&reg / membrane. The alternative membranes were sulphonated polyether-etherketone (SPEEK), composite, blend with sulphonated polyethersulphone (SPES), and polybenzimidazole (PBI). Several powder type MEA preparation techniques were employed by using Nafion&reg / membrane. These were GDL Spraying, Membrane Spraying, and Decal methods. GDL Spraying and Decal were determined as the most efficient and proper MEA preparation methods. These methods were tried to improve further by changing catalyst loading, introducing pore forming agents, and treating membrane and GDL. The highest performance, which was 0.53 W/cm2, for Nafion&reg / membrane was obtained at 70 0C cell temperature. In comparison, it was about 0.68 W/cm2 for a commercial MEA at the same temperature. MEA prepared with SPEEK membrane resulted in lower performance. Moreover, it was found that SPEEK membrane was not suitable for high temperature operation. It was stable up to 80 0C under the cell operating conditions. However, with the blend of 10 wt% SPES to SPEEK, the operating temperature was raised up to 90 0C without any membrane deformation. The highest power outputs were 0.29 W/cm2 (at 70 0C) and 0.27 W/cm2 (at 80 0C) for SPEEK and SPEEK-PES blend membrane based MEAs. The highest temperature, which was 150 0C, was attained with PBI based MEA during fuel cell tests.
