Efforts at Expanding the Scope of Peptides as Enantioselective Organic Catalysts

Coffin, Aaron January 2008 (has links)
The development of peptides as catalysts for preparing optically active molecules is an ongoing investigation. Efforts at expanding the use of peptides are explored in two ways: investigating novel reactions in which peptides can act as asymmetric catalysts and through expanding the substrate scope of peptides in performing kinetic resolutions. Attempts at furthering the reaction scope of acylsulfonamide-containing peptides to act as BrØnsted acids through promoting the attack of 7-methyl oct-6-ene-1-tosylaziridine (9) by an internal π-nucleophile are discussed herein. Also reported is the use of pentameric peptides containing a π(-methyl)histidine residue in the kinetic resolution of the primary alcohol 4-hydroxymethyl cyclopent-2-enone (76) and the secondary aliphatic alcohol 2- pentanol. Moderate selectivities were observed in the kinetic resolution of 4-hydroxymethyl cyclopent-2-enone (76) and promising results were obtained in the initial screening of catalysts for the resolution of 2-pentanol. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Prop profiles of compatible Poisson and Nijenhuis structures

Strohmayer, Henrik January 2009 (has links)
A prop profile of a differential geometric structure is a minimal resolution of an algebraic prop such that representations of this resolution are in one-to-one correspondence with structures of the given type. We begin this thesis with a detailed account of the algebraic tools necessary to construct prop profiles; we treat operads and props, and resolutions of these through Koszul duality. Our main results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, we contribute to the work of S.A. Merkulov on the prop profiles of Poisson and Nijenhuis structures. We prove that the operad of the latter prop profile is Koszul by showing that it has a PBW-basis, and we provide a geometrical interpretation of the former in terms of an L-infinity structure on the structure sheaf of a manifold. Secondly, we construct prop profiles of compatible Poisson and Nijenhuis structures. Representations of minimal resolutions of props correspond to Maurer-Cartan elements of certain Lie algebras associated to the resolved props. Also the differential geometric structures are defined as solutions of Maurer-Cartan equations. We show the correspondence between props and differential geometry by providing explicit isomorphisms between these Lie algebras. Thirdly, in order to construct the prop profiles of compatible Poisson and Nijenhuis structures we study operads of compatible algebraic structures. By studying Cohen-Macaulay properties of posets associated to such operads we prove the Koszulness of a large class of operads of compatible structures.

Essays on banks' resolutions of problem mortgage loans

Kim, Jung-Eun, active 2013 05 November 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines banks' resolution of distressed commercial mortgage loans. Following the introduction in the first chapter, the second chapter reviews the literature on banks' resolutions of distressed loans. In chapter 3, I present a model of banks' resolution decisions under information asymmetry. The model shows that banks prefer to renegotiate instead of foreclosing problem loans when there is a cost associated with revealing the quality of their mortgage portfolios. The fourth chapter presents empirical findings that are consistent with the model, i.e., that banks' resolution decisions are affected by their concerns of revealing negative information through large foreclosures. I find that larger loans are more likely to be renegotiated than smaller loans and that banks take a shorter amounts of time to renegotiate rather than to foreclose on problem loans. Secondly, the impact of loan size on the propensity to renegotiate is magnified for banks with superior past performance and for banks with lower local mortgage distress. In addition, I find that banks that raised new equity capital exhibit a stronger tendency to renegotiate larger problem loans in the previous year. In chapter 5, as a falsification test, I compare the bank-held sample with a Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities (CMBS) sample that does not share banks' mimicking motives, because special servicers of problem loans are not the originators of those loans. I find that the results are weaker or not present for CMBS, in contrast to the bank loan sample. In chapter 6, I study banks' resolution of problem loans while considering their problem loan portfolios. I consider two aspects of banks' problem loan portfolios -- their relationships with borrowers and the degree of regional diversification. Empirical results suggest that the sample banks choose to act "tougher", i.e., foreclose more, as they have more loans with a borrower. Finally, the degree of geographical diversification in problem loan portfolios may affect banks' resolution decisions. I find that as banks have geographically concentrated problem loan portfolios, they are more likely to renegotiate larger loans, measured either absolutely or relatively. Chapter 7 concludes. / text

HOMOGENEOUS GORENSTEIN IDEALS AND BOIJ SÖDERBERG DECOMPOSITIONS

Güntürkün, Sema 01 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis consists of two parts. Part one revolves around a construction for homogeneous Gorenstein ideals and properties of these ideals. Part two focuses on the behavior of the Boij-Söderberg decomposition of lex ideals. Gorenstein ideals are known for their nice duality properties. For codimension two and three, the structures of Gorenstein ideals have been established by Hilbert-Burch and Buchsbaum-Eisenbud, respectively. However, although some important results have been found about Gorenstein ideals of higher codimension, there is no structure theorem proven for higher codimension cases. Kustin and Miller showed how to construct a Gorenstein ideals in local Gorenstein rings starting from smaller such ideals. A modification of their construction in the case of graded rings is discussed. In a Noetherian ring, for a given two homogeneous Gorenstein ideals, we construct another homogeneous Gorenstein ideal and so we describe the resulting ideal in terms of the initial homogeneous Gorenstein ideals. Gorenstein liaison theory plays a central role in this construction. Using liaison properties, we examine structural relations between the constructed homogeneous ideal and the starting ideals. Boij-Söderberg theory is a very recent theory. It arose from two conjectures given by Boij and Söderberg and their proof by Eisenbud and Schreyer. It establishes a unique decomposition for Betti diagram of graded modules over polynomial rings. In the second part of this thesis, we focus on Betti diagrams of lex ideals which are the ideals having the largest Betti numbers among the ideals with the same Hilbert function. We describe Boij-Söderberg decomposition of a lex ideal in terms of Boij-Söderberg decompositions of some related lex ideals.

Counter-terrorism and the suppression of political pluralism : an examination of the anti-terrorism proclamation of Ethiopia

Bekele, Melhik A. 10 October 1900 (has links)
In the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks in the United States (U.S.), many states, responding to United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolutions, began to adopt an increased array of counter-terrorism measures. The Security Council had not in the beginning pre-empted the risk of counter-terrorism measures violating counter-terrorism human rights as it failed to immediately refer to states‟ duty to respect human rights in their responses to terrorism. It was only in 2003, in Resolution 1456, that the Security Council stated such duty by providing that „states must ensure that any measures taken to combat terrorism must comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law". / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2010. / Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa).
