Investigation of silicon PIN-detector for laser pulse detection

Chau, Sam January 2004 (has links)
This report has been written at SAAB Bofors Dynamics (SBD) AB in Gothenburg at the department of optronic systems. In military observation operations, a target to hit is chosen by illumination of a laser designator. From the targetpoint laser radiation is reflected on a detector that helps identify the target. The detector is a semiconductor PIN-type that has been investigated in a laboratory environment together with a specially designed laser source. The detector is a photodiode and using purchased components, circuits for both the photodiode and the laserdiode has been designed and fabricated. The bandwidth of the op-amp should be about 30 MHz, in the experiments a bandwidth of 42 MHz was used. Initially the feedback network, which consists of a 5.6 pF capacitor in parallel with a 1-kohm resistor determined the bandwidth. To avoid the op-amp saturate under strong illuminated laser radiation the feedback network will use a 56-pF capacitor and a 100-ohm resistor respectively. The laser should be pulsed with 10-20 ns width, 10 Hz repetition frequency, about 800 nm wavelength and a maximum output power of 80 mW. To avoid electrical reflection signals at measurement equipment connections, the laser circuit includes a resistor of about 50 ohm, that together with the resistance in the laserdiode forms the right termination that eliminate the reflection signals. The wire-wound type of resistor shall be avoided in this application and instead a surface mounted type was beneficial with much lower inductance. The detector showed a linear behaviour up to 40-mW optical power. Further investigation was hindered by the breakdown of the laserdiodes. The function generator limits the tests to achieve 80 mW in light power. In different experiments the responsivity of the photodiode is different from the nominal value, however it would have required more time to investigate the causes.

The Study of Pyroelectric Infrared Detectors Prepared by a Sol-Gel Technology

Kao, Ming-Cheng 30 July 2004 (has links)
In this thesis, the lithium tantalite [LiTaO3, abbreviated to LT] thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by spin coating with sol-gel processing and rapid thermal processing. 1,3 propanediol was used as solvent to minimize the number of cycles of spin coating and drying processes to obtain the desired thickness of thin film. By changing the heating rate (600~3000¢J/min) and the heating temperature (500~800¢J), the effects of various processing parameters on the thin films growth are studied. In addition, the thermal isolation of detecting elements was achieved by the anisotropic wet etching of back silicon substrate. In order to reduce the thermal mass and thermal time constant of detector, the sensing element was built-up on a thin membrane. By changing the membrane thickness (20~350 £gm), the effects of various membrane thickness on the response of pyroelectric IR detector devices are studied also. Experimental results reveal that the heating rate will influence strongly on grain size, dielectricity, ferroelectricity and pyroelectricity of LT thin films. With the increase of heating rate, the grain size of LT thin film decreases slightly, and the c-axis orientation is enhanced. The relative dielectric constant (£`r ) of LT thin film increases from 28 up to 45.6, the dielectric loss (tan

Navigering ur ett användarperspektiv : En experimentell studie med responsiva webbsidor i mobilen / Navigation through a usability perspective : An experimental study with responsive websites in mobile phones

Johannesson, Joella, Lundbjörk, Josefin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis will bring up whether responsive navigations is useful and which strategies users might have when they browse on a mobile website. The purpose is to shed some light on the subject of responsive navigations that it is something one need to take a closer look at. It plays an important role when you develop responsive websites. In this thesis there will be a study with experimental elements. The participants are going to test a few types of menus that is available on responsive mobile sites today. The participants in the study will also be part of a short interview after they have completed the study. The result shows that users have different strategies when they are on a mobile website. There were for example some who wanted filters that made it easier to find on the website. It also shows that the websites that are in this study have some problems that you as user come across when you visit the site. In the conclusion you can see that there are a few things you need to consider when one creates a website for mobile phones. There are some theories that indicates that the website needs to be obvious in how you use it.

Examining the relationships between forensic practice knowledge, correctional orientation and engagement in core correctional practices among corrections officers

2015 August 1900 (has links)
Via their frequency of contact alone, Corrections Officers (COs) have maximal opportunity to role model pro-social behaviour and further rehabilitative outcomes for offenders. Yet previous research indicates that one of the barriers to COs adopting this additional and sometimes contradictory job requirement, is that COs generally maintain largely punitive attitudes towards inmates. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether one reason for CO punitiveness is that these frontline workers lack knowledge of basic forensic practice (FP) research findings which describe elements that lead to offender change. Utilizing mixed-methods, the nature of the relationship between FP knowledge and the Correctional Orientation of COs, consisting of support for rehabilitation (SR) and support for punishment (SP), was explored. Further examined was how FP knowledge, SR and SP related to COs self-reported engagement in Core Correctional Practices (CCPs) which delineate the quality of interactions that facilitate positive rehabilitative outcomes. Employing a new measure of Correctional Orientation developed and piloted on an undergraduate sample (N=148) in Study 1, Study 2 involved surveys of Corrections Workers (CWs) (N=227) employed in the four provincial adult correctional facilities in Saskatchewan. Hierarchical multiple regressions including demographic covariates confirmed a robust relationship between FP knowledge and SR, and FP knowledge and SP. Likewise, though FP knowledge was significantly positively correlated with CCPs, the addition of SR and SP to a third multiple regression on CCPs rendered the contribution of FP knowledge non-significant. SR was a better predictor of CCPs than SP. Finally, in Study 3, eight CWs varying in their survey responses were interviewed. Utilizing thematic analysis three broad models were produced which described the reasons CWs may or may not support rehabilitation or punishment and engage in CCPs. Additional themes describing how interviewees responded to FP research were also generated. In the discussion the findings of all three studies were combined. Notably, SR appears to be more responsive to FP knowledge than SP, while salient job-related experiences of CWs are likely to increase SP. Yet, CWs can increase their SR without a comparable decrease in their SP and vice versa. Interviewees felt that the largest obstacle to their engagement in CCPs were the current features of the institutional settings which generated a cynical, burnt-out and punitive staff culture whereby peer pressure was employed to maintain prescribed modes of interaction. Comprehensive recommendations for reducing stress and burnout, education and training targets, and hiring criteria which could screen out problematic applicants are provided.

Heurlin-Norinder, Mia January 2005 (has links)
This thesis is the result of two studies concerning children’s independent mobility, which means the freedom for children to walk or bike on their own or together with friends but without being escorted by parents. The studies are accomplished in four different areas and are also searching for different environmental qualities. The areas differ concerning traffic planning and architecture but also concerning commercial and cultural choice. The aim is to understand and describe how places are constructed and designed when they are used and experienced in a positive – or a negative – way by children. I emphasize, that we – through the responses in meeting with other people – learn hidden and visible rules and also how to change perspective and roles. I therefore focus on the meeting between children and other people but also on meeting between children and places. The issue is: What do places look like – what qualities or qualifications – can be notified as important to children to perceive coherence that consequently make them learn to control their environment and develop to harmonious grown-ups. The main questions are: In what degree can children’s independent mobility be related to the planning and design in the four areas? Why do some neighbourhoods/places appear as more important to children than others, making children use them in a varied way? Is it possible to describe qualities in neighbourhoods in a way that can be interpreted as meaningful for children’s development? In the first study 732 children in grade two and five in compulsory school, filled in a questionnaire and the questions focused on how they got to school, to friends, to activities etc. The results showed that in the area with more traffic than the other three areas, children were more often taken by car to school and to leisure activities. Even international research in the nineties did show that children had lost the accessibility to their neighbourhood. In the second study, 32 children in the same areas guided me around in their environment showing me the way to school and places they used to visit. At the same time they told me what they liked or disliked in their neighbourhood. Afterwards they were interviewed and they also had the opportunity to fill in so called “mobility maps”. The content in this text mainly focuses the second study. From the children’s statements, a summary of the most important differences looks as follows: I The accessibility in neighbourhoods and places: i.e. children’s independent mobility – or if they had to be escorted by grown-ups – and if they could fiddle about. II Children’s play and activities: i.e. if they had something to do, if they played in pairs or in groups and if play could take place without planning. III Children’s experiences of places and people: i.e. if they had something to show me and to tell me, if there were any meetings with other persons, if the children talked about their own yard and appreciated green areas, if they had fun or not, if they were afraid being out and if they told me any memories from some places. The theoretical framework is based on Johan Asplund’s theory on social responsivity and G. H. Mead’s theory on social relations and his view of the importance of objects. The study also is based on three different place theories as expressed by David Canter, Christian Norberg-Schulz and Clarence Crafoord and Asplund’s view of place and placelessness. This study has made it clear that everything children do in their neighbourhood can be related to concrete places and things but it differed concerning what and how they played, what they experienced and what the meetings looked like – if any. Environmental qualities arise, as I have interpreted my results, when neighbourhoods and places are safe, when there are landmarks, places for meetings, possibility of orientation and sense of locality and when the places are varied and challenging. Conclusions are drawn regarding differences in social responsivity, if there is a sense of having a place of one’s own – that in the same time is shared by other people – and if places are responding. From these statements place identity can be seen as a merging of the qualities in places and the perceived sense of place as described above. To have opportunity to investigate the neighbourhood is also an important part of children’s informal learning. They learn how to read the surroundings and how to find the way in a town or in an environment. They get to know the neighbourhood and the world outside and so they also learn how to behave and how to control themselves and even the life. Results showed though that the children in the four areas made those experiences but, certainly, in different ways.

The meeting between mentally disabledindividuals and pets : An etnographic study of the importance of interactionfor the sense of well-being.

Östman, Marie January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to find out whether the interaction between mentally disabled individuals and pet positively affects the individual and gives a feeling of well-being to the extent that this might be implicated in the psychologically disabled people’s everyday life in some form of rehabilitation measure. The study is qualitative and builds on an ethnographic design. Data collection was performed through six observations, six interviews and reflections. Interviews were also conducted with relatives and assistants for greater opportunity for follow-up questions, and descriptions of the situation. Theoretical perspective guiding this study is symbolic interactionism. Theoretical focus is on Asplund's theory of social responsivity and Asplund's explanations of the concrete person and abstract social being. This focus is complemented through Mead's theory on self-consciousness, Cooley’s theory of the looking-glass-self and Berg's description of  different expressions and forms of play. Previous research is linked to interaction with pets and the elderly, individuals with autism and other disabilities. The conclusion of the study show that positive feelings of well-being arise in the meeting through interaction with companion animals. Relatives and assistants experience the activity to be of importance in the mentally disabled’s everyday life. The study also shows incomprehension in bringing this to decision-makers and others to possibly enhance the mentally disabled people everyday life with animal-assisted rehabilitation measures.

Fabrication and characterization of GaN visible-blind ultraviolet avalanche photodiodes

Zhang, Yun 20 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes the fabrication and characterization of GaN homojunction visible-blind ultraviolet (UV) p-i-n avalanche photodiodes (APDs) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on free-standing bulk GaN substrates. The objective of this research is to develop GaN UV p-i-n APDs with high linear-mode avalanche gains and the Geiger-mode operation for single photon detection. Low noise, high responsivity, and high detectivity are also required for fabricated APDs used as photodiodes in the photovoltaic mode (zero bias) and the photoconductive mode (low reverse bias). High material defect density and immature fabrication technology have hampered the development of III-nitride APDs in the past. In this thesis, sidewall leakage reduction methods have been developed to achieve significant improvement in dark current density, noise performance, and photo detection performance. A record linear-mode avalanche gain > 10⁵ for GaN APDs was demonstrated at λ = 360 nm. The first Geiger-mode deep UV (DUV) APD using front-illuminated homojunction p-i-n diode structure on a free-standing bulk GaN substrate was also measured with single photo detection efficiency (SPDE) of 1.0 % and dark count probability (DCP) of 0.03 at 265 nm. The performance of fabricated homojunction GaN p-i-n photodiodes was also evaluated in the photoconductive mode as well as the photovoltaic mode. For an 80-µm-diameter device biased at - 20 V (in the photoconductive mode) the dark current density is lower than 40 pA/cm² which is the lowest value achieved for any III-nitride photodiode so far. Its responsivity is 0.140 A/W at 360 nm with an ultraviolet-visible rejection ratio of 8×10³. The room-temperature noise equivalent power is 4.27×10 ⁻¹⁷ W-Hz-[superscript 0.5] and the detectivity D* is 1.66×10¹⁴ cm-Hz[superscript 0.5]-W ⁻¹ at - 20 V. The minimum detectable optical power is as low as 100 fW. They are among the best values reported for reverse-biased GaN p-i-n photodiodes to date.

Cavalheiro, Andressa Fracaro January 2015 (has links)
This work aims to understand the origin and functioning of the provision of health care system to all Brazilians without distinction, and, therefore, deeply analyzes the sources from which its organization arose. An Ecological Investigation of Contextual Factors and Cognitions that Impact Parental Responsivity for Low-Income Mothers of Preschool-Age Children

Aranda, Christina 10 October 2013 (has links)
Parental responsivity can profoundly influence developmental trajectories and child outcomes. This study aimed to learn more about the contextual risk and protective factors that influence parental self-efficacy (PSE), depression, parenting stress, and subsequent parental responsivity in low-income mothers of preschoolers. Two models predicting responsivity were tested using longitudinal data (N = 307) from the Early Steps Multisite Study. Predictors included: parent ethnic discrimination, SES discrimination, neighborhood danger, satisfaction with social support, overall life satisfaction, neighborhood connectedness, PSE, depression, and parenting stress related to daily hassles. Structural equation modeling was used to test for overall model fit, as well as direct and indirect relations between the variables over three time points. Model 1 controlled for maternal depression, while Model 2 incorporated maternal depression into the model as a predictor at Time 1. Two post hoc models that included depression at two time points were also tested. Models 1 and 2 adequately fit the data, while the post hoc models fit the data very well. Results indicated that discrimination and perceptions of danger in the neighborhood were related to lower satisfaction with social support, lower overall life satisfaction, and lower feelings of connectedness with the neighborhood. Adverse factors also predicted maternal responsivity at Time 3. Protective factors were predictive of high PSE and responsivity over time. Earlier experiences of depression were predictive of parenting stress and depression over time. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
