Psychological and Cognitive Factors that Influence Post-Exercise Energy Intake in Normal Weight and Overweight Sedentary Males

Harris, Cristen Lynn 26 March 2008 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a single bout of moderate-intensity exercise on acute (ad libitum lunch) post-exercise energy intake (PE-EI) and 12-hour energy intake in normal-weight and overweight sedentary males. Accuracy in estimating energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE), solid vs. liquid carbohydrate intake, mood, and perceived hunger were also assessed. The study consisted of two conditions, exercise and rest, with each subject participating in each condition, in a counterbalanced-crossover design on two days. The participants were randomly assigned to either the exercise or resting (seated) control condition on the first day of the experiment, and then the condition was reversed on the second day. Exercise consisted of walking on a treadmill at moderate-intensity for 60 minutes. Eighty males, mean age 30+8 years were categorized into five groups according to weight status (overweight/normal-weight), dietary restraint status (high/low), and dieting status (yes/no). The main effects of condition and group, and the interaction were not significant for acute (lunch) or 12-hour PE-EI. Overall, participants estimated EE for exercise at 46% higher than actual exercise EE, and they estimated EE for rest by 45% lower than actual resting EE. Participants significantly underestimated EI at lunch on both the exercise and rest days by 43% and 44%, respectively. Participants with high restraint were significantly better at estimating EE on the exercise day, and better at estimating EI on the rest day. Mood, perceived hunger, and solid vs. liquid carbohydrate intake were not influenced by dietary restraint, weight, or dieting status. In conclusion, a single bout of moderate-intensity exercise did not influence PE-EI in sedentary males in reference to dietary restraint, weight, and dieting status. Results also suggested that among sedentary males, there is a general inability to accurately estimate calories for moderate-intensity physical activity and EI. Inaccurate estimates of EE and EI have the potential to influence how males manage their weight.

The low birth weight infants must be transported under special conditions after hospital discharge. These special conditions are associated with physiological immaturity and low weight state that encourage the need of differentiated retention devices of conventionally existing products. A human-centered design approach was used to develop two solutions for the low birth weight infant transportation, a solution for usage in particular vehicles and another for usage in collective vehicles. The design process embraced 4 phases: (1) specific the context of use (understanding the current conditions of "low birth weight infants" transport and the needs of the users), (2) specify the requirements (translate the needs of the users to requirements that the solutions must meet), (3) produce design solutions, (4) evaluate the designs. Previous studies were necessary to establish the context of use; these have enabled researchers to recognize the most important users¿ needs, which defined the parameters of the projects. The solutions developed were evaluated through a series of interviews, with groups of health staff from Neonatal Area and mothers of low birth weight infants, followed by usability tests. The human-centered design approach embraced three user groups: neonates, family members and health staff. These three groups were involved around the design process, this enabled to meet important aspects for the solutions realization and to achieve user acceptance / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestra em Engenharia Mecânica

In transportation, for ambulances, children are exposed to fatal risks by transported in adult gurneys that are not adapted to child anthropometry. The situation is escalated when considering the fact that the ambulances move up in high speeds and with frequently need to reduce abruptly velocity. In this field, we tried to design, build and test a prototype gurney with an effective restraint system for emergency transport children. The differential of the project regards to other children gurneys that exist in the international market; its versatility to perform both transport in ambulances and possible land rescue. Child gurney enables a wide range of small patients from children with one (1) until ten (10) years old, designed for fast handling and storage by be foldable and easy to install on any adult gurney standardized by ABNT. The main safety factor is linked to the adjustable retention system with facility for rapid attachment and the child's removal. Impact tests were performed, with an approximate speed of 18 (twenty) km / h, using the adult gurney and child gurney. The dummy with mass 22 kg, representing a child with 6 (six) years old, was installed in sitting and lying positions. Data collected via a computer program Kinovea suitable for biomechanical analysis, allowed to estimate displacement of the dummy with great precision. It was used a smartphone based on Android operational system to register decelerations occurred on impact. Child gurney had a higher retention regarding to adult gurney both the displacement of the head when the dummy torso restraint. In two teste with lying position, the dummy was ejected out of the gurney, fact that had never happened with child gurney. Tests conducted with the prototype gurney validated the project and the constructive solution that are bind to a patent to will be implanted in Brazil / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Vztah Spolkové republiky Německa k intervenci v Libyi / The relationship of the Federal Republic of Germany to the intervention in Libya

Janatková, Karolína January 2018 (has links)
The topic of this master thesis is the Relationship of the Federal Republic of Germany to the intervention in Libya. The aim of this master thesis is to answer the research question: "Why did not Germany support the intervention in Libya?". After the abstention on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, Germany was for not continuing human rights protection. The decision, to reject the intervention, has confirmed that Germany is still very skeptical regarding the involvement of its military personnel and assets abroad. The decision of the Security Council is not only a milestone in German history, but also a milestone for the international community. For the first time has the United Nations Security Council agreed to use military forces against a functioning state with the aim of protecting civilian population. This master thesis is a single case study; through which the author examines a very specific situation when Germany decided not to participate in the voting process regarding the intervention in Libya. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on the constructivist theory, furthermore the thesis focuses also on the concepts of civilian power, multilateralism, culture of restraint, and the protection of human rights. All these terms have significant influence on German foreign...

Princip soudního sebeomezení v judikatuře Ústavního soudu ČR / Judicial self-restraint in the judicature of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic

Skořepa, Petr January 2020 (has links)
Judicial self-restraint in the judicature of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic Abstract The thesis deals with the role of the judicial self-restraint in the judicature of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic. Besides the theoretical definitions is the pivotal part of the thesis practical section that is focused on the analysis of pre-selected decisions of the Constitutional Court with respect to the judicial self-restraint. The first chapter contains definition of the theory of separation of powers as basis for the judicial self-restraint and its subcategories. Part of this chapter is oriented at the judicial power itself, which is crucial for the thesis. The second chapter provides definitions of key concepts - principal of judicial self-restraint, priority of the constitutionally conformal interpretation, political question doctrine and judicial activism, as it is called. These concepts are defined from the points of view of the angloamerican legal system as well as czech legal system. In the second chapter are also stated possible factors that may lead to the judicial activism and to the judiciary state, as it is called. The chapter afterwards describes the judicial interpretation and application of law in the context of the judicial self-restraint and provides relevant historical...
