displacements of a nail reinforced sheet pile wall in Goiânia, Brazil were measured during the
excavation process. The instrumentation methods adopted were multiple point borehole
extensometers (MPBX) and optical surveying. The MPBX showed good results that could be
appropriately interpreted as the excavation progressed. However, the measurements of optical
surveying were not reliable due the low precision of total station and for being highly affected
by user’s errors. In order to determine the geotechnical profile, laboratory test were
undertaken to obtain strength and deformation parameters for unsaturated and saturated soil
conditions. The large variability of the soil, observed in terms of void ratio, presented an
important obstacle, making the determination of representative shear strength parameters a
challenge. As a way to bridge the analysis of field monitoring results, soil properties and the
numerical back analyses of the retaining walls, the water content profile and the soil-water
characteristic curve were measured. Such data was used to obtain the suction profile and
evaluated its influence in the monitored field data. Finally, the numerical code Sheeting
Check (Geo5), which uses the beam on elastic foundation method, was employed to obtain
the soil subgrade reaction modulus (ks) and determine the retaining wall deformation profile
and earth pressures in saturated and unsaturated soil condition. The maximum lateral
displacements values found in the numerical back analyses were compatible with the
monitoring results. Besides, the influence of unsaturated soil conditions and soil suction in the
reduction of the retaining wall deformations and the active earth pressures were observed. / Este estudo apresenta resultados de um extenso monitoramento de deslocamentos horizontais
de uma estrutura de contenção em estacas espaçadas com tirantes passivos na cidade de
Goiânia, Brasil que foram medidas durante o processo de escavação. Os métodos de
instrumentação adotados foram de extensômetros de hastes horizontais múltiplas (EHHM) e
medições topográficas. O EHHM apresentou bons resultados que permitiu interpretar
corretamente o progresso da escavação. Todavia, as medições topográficas não foram
confiáveis devido à baixa precisão da Estação Total e sendo bastante afetados por erros do
usuário. Para determinar o perfil geotécnico do solo, ensaios em laboratório foram realizados
para obter parâmetros de resistência e deformabilidade para o solo na condição natural e
saturada. A grande variabilidade do solo, observada em termos de índice de vazios, se
apresenta como importante obstáculo, tornando a determinação representativa dos parâmetros
de resistência ao cisalhamento um desafio. Buscando acoplar as análises dos resultados de
monitoramento em campo, propriedades do solo e retro análises da estrutura de contenção, o
perfil de umidade e a curva característica solo-água foram medidos. Esses dados foram
utilizados para obter o perfil de sucção do solo e avaliar sua influência nos dados monitorados
em campo. Por fim, a ferramenta numérica Shetting Check (Geo5), que aplica o método de
viga apoiada sobre base elástica, foi utilizada para obter o módulo de reação do solo (ks) e
avaliar o comportamento do perfil de deformação da parede de contenção e do empuxo de
terra para o solo na condição saturada e não saturado. Os valores de deslocamentos
horizontais máximos obtidos a partir da retro análise apresentam-se compatíveis com valores
da literatura. Além disso, a influência da sucção na redução da deformação da parede de
contenção e dos empuxos ativos foi observada.

Choice of the constitutive model and determination of input parameters are necessary for a successful application of numerical methods in geotechnical engineering. Higher complexity of modern constitutive models results in an increase of the number of input parameters and time requirements for their calibration. Optimization methods are a possible solution for this problem. An application in which metaheuristic optimization method Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is involved is presented in this thesis. Critical review and testing of various PSO alternatives was performed in the first part of this thesis. The most efective PSO alternatives were chosen. In the second part connection between PSO algorithm and finite element solver was prepared. Automatization of determination of constitutive models input parameters was performed on three boundary value problems: laboratory test (oedometer), in-situ test (pressuremeter) and geotechical construction (retaining wall). Three types of constitutive models are used. Linear elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb model, elastoplastic non-linear Hardening soil model and Hardening soil - small strain model.

Erfarenheter från användning av sekantpålning som stödkonstruktion : Fallstudier från projekt i Sverige / Experiences from the use of secant piling as a support structure : Case studies from projects in SwedenHöglund, Marcus, Forsén, Oscar January 2015 (has links)
Målet med rapporten är att redovisa erforderliga maskiner, personal och erfarenhetsdata för sekantpålning. Detta kan utnyttjas vid jämförelse med andra pålningsmetoder av företag. Sekantpålning används som en stödkonstruktion, vars uppgift är att stötta jordmassor vid schakt. De positiva egenskaperna med denna är en bidragande faktor till ett ökat utnyttjande av metoden. Genom att uppnå lägre vibrationsnivåer och minimera grundvattensänkning får metoden ett ökat mervärde. Sekantpålningsmetoden används i större utsträckning utomlands och det är först nu den börjar brukas i Sverige. Genom att Trafikverket har godkänt sekantpålning som en permanent konstruktion, kan metoden bryta ny mark i Sverige. Sekantpålningsmetoden i sig påverkas ej av det svenska mark- och klimatförhållandet. Det är den teknik som man utnyttjar vid sekantpålningen, som påverkas av de geologiska och hydrogeologiska förutsättningarna. Mark som består av rikligt med stenblock eller varierande sten storlekar bör man använda CSP-tekniken med foderrörsborrning. Tekniker som inte klarar av dessa markförhållanden är CFA och CAP, som istället utnyttjar en augerborr. Dessa tekniker utnyttjas när marken består av fastlera eller friktionsjord, vilket gör arbetet för augerborren betydligt lättare än om marken består av stenblock. Slutsatsen i rapporten visar att sekantpålning är det dyrare alternativet och att metoden inte kan konkurrera med de mer konventionella stödkonstruktionerna ur kostnadssynpunkt. För att sekantpålningen ska vara fördelaktig måste metoden ses ur ett större perspektiv och hänsyn tas till omgivningspåverkan och markförhållanden. På så sätt kan ett mervärde skapas. Metoden lämpar sig väl i innerstadsmiljö med närliggande byggnader, då buller och vibrationer är en påverkande faktor. Projekt som har utnyttjat sekantpålningsmetoden har varierande kostnader, då de har använt olika sekantpålningstekniker. Vid Norra länken 12 och 22 tillämpades CSP-tekniken som hade en kapacitet till att göra 2,5 pålar per dag till en kostnad av 11.500 kr/m². Vid Bargers plats i Malmö tillämpades CFA-tekniken till en kostnad av 2.500 kr/m². Vid Folkungagatan i Stockholm användes CAP-tekniken till en kostnad av 4.500 kr/m². Metoden har både för och nackdelar. Fördelarna är att metoden är flexibel vilket innebär att den kan anpassas efter önskad geometri. Metoden bidrar till mindre vibrationer som i sin tur minimerar risken för sättningar. Nackdelarna är att sekantpålning är dyrare än konventionella stödkonstruktioner p.g.a. att metoden är tidskrävande. Vid sekantpålning som permanent stödkonstruktion görs efterspänning av ankarstag som är tidskrävande. I rapporten presenteras byggprojekt där sekantpålning använts. Projekt som redovisas i rapporten är Odenplan station, Spjutmo kraftstation, Norra länken 12 och 22, Bagers plats och Folkungagatan. / The goal of the report is to present machines, staff and requisite experience data within secant piling. The information may be utilized in comparison with other piling methods by corporations. Secant piling is used as a support structure whose task is to keep the soil from sliding in to the pit during excavation. Its positive aspects of the environment are a contributing factor to increased use of the method. By achieving lower vibration levels and minimize the reduction in the groundwater level, the method adds value. The secant pile method is extensively used abroad and nowadays it begins to be operated in Sweden. Now when Trafikverket has approved secant piling as a permanent structure, the method can lead to more usage in Sweden. The secant pile method in itself is not affected by the Swedish soil and climatic condition. It is the technique you are utilizing when using secant piling that’s affected by the geological and hydrogeological conditions. Soil that is consisting of boulders or variable stone sizes should use CSP technology with casing drilling. Techniques that don’t work in these soil conditions is CFA and CAP, which instead uses an auger drill. These techniques are utilized when the soil consists of solid clay or friction soil, which makes the work of the auger drill much easier than if the land consists of stone blocks. The conclusion of the report indicate that secant piles are the more expensive option, and that the method cannot compete with the more conventional support structures in that regard. To understand that secant piles will be beneficial the method must be seen from a broader perspective and you have to look at the impact of the surroundings and the soil conditions. In this way, added value is created. The method is suitable in urban setting with nearby buildings, where noise and vibration is an influencing factor. Projects that have embraced the secant pile method have varying costs, since they have used different secant pile techniques. At Norra länken 12 and 22 they used the CSP technology that had a capacity to make 2.5 piles per day at a cost of 11,500 SEK/m². In Bagers Plats in Malmö they used the CFA technology at a cost of 2,500 SEK/m². At Folkungagatan in Stockholm they used the CAP technology at a cost of 4,500 SEK/m². The method has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that the method is flexible which means that it can be adapted to the desired geometry. This method helps to reduce vibration, which in turn minimizes the risk of subsidence. The disadvantages are that secant piling is more expensive than conventional supporting structures because of the method is time consuming. When secant piles that are used as a permanent support structure the anchor rods have to be tightened often and that is time consuming. The report presents the construction projects where secant piling is used. Projects presented in the report are Odenplan station, Spjutmo kraftstation, Norra länken 12 and 22, Bagers plats and Folkungagatan.

I samband med digitaliseringens intåg har nya förbättrade BIM-verktyg börjat användas för att effektivisera konstruktörens arbete. Med hjälp av implementering av grafiska tredjepartsprogram kan BIM verktygen bidra med ökat funktionalitet. Ett exempel på ett sådant program är tredjepartsprogrammet Grasshopper kopplat till BIM-verktygen Tekla Structures som skapar parameterstyrning, vilket innebär att modellens data styrs och nås av de externa programmen. På Rambolls Bro- och Tunnelavdelning vill man idag, som många andra konsultföretag bli mer BIMorienterade. Dock saknas en uppskattning av den totala tidsbesparingen och nyttjande av tredjepartsprogrammen. Syftet med detta examensarbete har varit att komma fram till en slutsats som ger stöd i beslutsfattande kring vilka typer av projekt som parameterstyrda modeller kan vara lämpliga för. Genom uppbyggnad av ett automatiserat skript för en stödmur har denna studie visat kopplingen mellan programvarorna Microsoft Excel, Rhinoceros-Grasshopper och Tekla Structures. Med denna tillämpning har man lyckats skapa ett lätthanterligt användargränssnitt. Vidare har man jämfört det färdiga skriptet i Grasshopper med en modellering i Civil 3D där man har kommit fram till att man kan vinna tid på att ha ett optimalt skript. Man har även kunnat dra slutsatser under vilka förhållanden det lämpar sig att använda parametrisk modellering och automatisering som pekar mot tidiga skeden i projektering och standardkonstruktioner. / In connection with the digitalization's entry, the companies has begun to apply new improved BIMtools to streamline the constructor's work. With the help of the implementation of graphical thirdparty applications, the BIM-tools can achieve increased functionality. An example of such a program is the third party applications Grasshopper linked to the Tekla Structure, which creates so called computational design, which means that the model's data is controlled and accessed by the external programs. The Bridge and Tunnel department at Ramboll wants to become, like many other consulting firms, more BIM oriented. However, there is no estimate of total timesaving and utilization of the implementation today. The purpose of this thesis project has been to come at a conclusion that provides support in decision-making regarding which types of projects that parameter-controlled models may be suitable for. By building an automated script for a retaining wall, this study has shown the connection between the software Microsoft Excel, Rhinoceros-Grasshopper and Tekla Structures. With this application, one has succeeded in creating an easy-to-use interface. Furthermore, one has compared the finished script in Grasshopper with a model in Civil 3D where the assumption that one can gain time by having a finished script. It has also been possible to draw conclusions under which conditions it is suitable to use parametric modeling and automation that points to early stages in design and standard constructions.

Condition assessment of railway bridge structure : based on proof load test and finite element analysisAl Zouabi, Mohammad Ghiath January 2024 (has links)
The process for assessing the condition of a composite bridge via strain measurements is detailed in this thesis. Field measurements were utilized to conduct the assessment of a bridge located in the northern region of Sweden. The bridge is constructed with a trough and two beams, and its structure is supported by two retaining walls that enclose a 21.8-meter-long compartment. A one hundred and sixty kilo Newton vehicle cargo of trains passes the bridge. The objective is to measure and assess the bridge in the event that the axial load increases to 300 kN. Testing commenced in February of 2023. The measurement of strain was conducted using test cases. To determine the bridge's behaviour, modelling was conducted in accordance with the measurements. For this thesis, a set of models with finite elements was established and analysed. Models are made using data taken in the field and the properties of the materials. With these models as guides, he was able to make a model that is 97% accurate of how the bridge really is. The retaining walls were left out of the models because measurements showed that they were very rigid. The influence line was also created to find the positions of the axial loads, resulting in the largest value of bending moment. After that, those positions were used for a new model with 350 KN of axial loads. Next, the stresses resulting from the actual axial loads are computed and validated using Eurocode criteria. The last step was to compare the results of the calculation with the results of the finite element analysis. The modelling results showed values that were similar to the test results, so these were used to compare the results. The modelling results serve by measuring strain interactions d as an evaluation of the bridge's condition. The assessment shows that the bridge is stronger than when standard methods are used. / Detta examenarbete beskriver i detalj hur töjningsmätningar används för att bedöma en kompositbros tillstånd. En bro i den norra regionen av Sverige bedömdes med hjälp av fältmätningar. Bron är konstruerad med ett tråg och två balkar. Två stödmurar omsluter utrymmet på 21,8 meter. En godsvagn som väger 160 kN går över bron. Målet är att mäta och utvärdera bron i händelse av att den axiella belastningen stiger till 300 kN. Testningen började i februari 2023. Det användes testfall för att mäta töjning. Modellering utfördes i enlighet med mätningarna för att avgöra brons beteende. En uppsättning modeller med ändliga element konstruerades och analyserades för denna avhandling. Data från fältet och materialegenskaper användes för att skapa modellerna. En modell som är 97 % korrekt av brons verkliga form kan skapas med hjälp av dessa modeller som vägledning. Modellerna inkluderade inte stödmurarna eftersom mätningar visade att de var extremt styva. Modelleringsresultaten använder töjningsinteraktioner för att bedöma brotillståndet. Undersökningen visar att bron är starkare än med standardmetoder.

Vertical gardening in a northern city; speculations for WinnipegUrben-Imbeault, Tamara 26 May 2015 (has links)
This practicum is a reference for vertical gardeners in cold climates. Winnipeg, Manitoba is explored, however findings may be applied to other cities in similar climates. First, the history of vertical gardening is discussed, then the types of vertical gardens currently on the market are described. These can be classified into two categories: soil bearing or non-soil bearing. Most designs are modular pre-planted systems that can be attached to any wall, as long as it satisfies the structural requirements recommended by the manufacturer. The benefits of vertical gardening have been shown to be rather extensive, covering a wide range of areas. Aesthetic improvement, reduction of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, improvement of air quality, stormwater absorption, noise reduction, native habitat integration, reduction of heating and cooling costs for buildings, food production, marketing, and biophilia are all benefits explored in detail. Difficulties associated with vertical gardening are discussed, specifically the lack of knowledge and awareness of vertical gardens, lack of empirical evidence (or missing details in existing research), overall cost and lack of financial incentives, lack of industry codes, and various associated risks. Design framework exists within microclimate conditions unique to vertical gardens, as well as neighbourhood and regional (micro)climates. Theories relating to the study of green walls covered include the human ecosystem model, urban reconciliation ecology, habitat templating, the urban cliff hypothesis, and wall ecology. Suitable habitat templates identified for vertical gardens in Winnipeg are cliffs, sand dunes, alvars, mixed grass prairie and prairie potholes. Design parameters to be followed for vertical garden design in Winnipeg are to ensure that lightweight materials are used, to provide insulation to protect plants from sudden temperature changes, to choose plants that grow in the region and are adapted to grow in areas with limited soil, increased wind, varying degrees of sunlight (depending on orientation), and increased pollution and salt spray depending on location. / October 2015
