The Women From Rhodesia: An Auto-Ethnographic Study of Immigrant Experience and [Re]Aggregation in Western Australia.

This thesis examines the positioning of white, English-speaking, immigrant women from Africa to Australia. I explore the effects that minimal differences have on issues of identity. Notions of identity, memory, and belonging are contrasted with white settlement in Rhodesia in the last century. My personal history and the desire to write a thesis relevant to the Australian experience led me to ask, "How do women from a privileged background, from Rhodesia and Zimbabwe, understand their experiences as immigrants to Australia?" The relevance lies in the perception that Australia is populated by immigrants and this research interrogates at a deeper level some specific issues presented by this sample group and my interpretation of their experiences augments the literature in this area. I questioned (individually) a small group of immigrants using unstructured interviews; the use of my own experiences and ‘long/desk drawer’ makes the study significantly autobiographical. Notions of migration into Australia from Southern Africa are explored using theories and themes of rites de passage. I interrogate the meanings attributed to assimilation and integration in immigration and connect these to the theory. Identity, memory, and reflection are discussed in the context of separation from Africa and integration into Australia. The similarities and differences and embodied history (habitus) that shape us, interweave the trope of rites de passage, uncovering a multiplicity of identity—attributed, assumed, and self-determined. I examine the ways in which Australians of Anglo-Saxon and British origin tend to position English-speaking immigrants from non-British backgrounds as outsiders and suggest that this attribution has more to do with similarities than differences. Reflection and discussion of other times and places reveals how memories intersect with ‘new’ lives in Australia and the complexities of time in migration as rites de passage make possible an exploration of present experience shadowing earlier experience. Finally, I discover that identity and belonging as continually negotiated spaces are illuminated by the contrast I drew between assimilation and integration as conceptual tools in understanding the migrant experience.

Aspects of the biology, population ecology and behaviour of the sable antelope, Hippotragus niger niger, (Harris, 1838) in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia

The study set out to determine some of the bioecological relationships of the sable antelope Hippotragus niger niger (Harris, 1838) in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia. The vegetation of the area is divided into seven categories each of which is discussed. The population in the study area (approximately 200) had three major components as follows: the breeding groups, the bachelor male groups and territorial males. The structure of the breeding groups varied seasonally. Bachelor male groups of two to 12 consisted of younger males which had as yet not established territories. Territorial males fell into three classes depending on status:- class I: central territorial; class II: peripheral territorial and class III: outer territorial males, in relation to the breeding group home ranges. The population had a recruitment rate of 26 - 29 per cent fron young of the year and a calving percentage of 56 - 67 per cent, calculated towards the end of the year for 1971 and 1972. The male to fenale sex ratio was not significantly different from a l:l ratio for calves and yearlings but in adults the females outnumbered the males significantly. Breeding groups were found to have home ranges ranging in area from 240 ha to 280 ha though this did not apply in the strictest sense. The territories of territorial males were marked by branch breaking on shrubs and were equivalent to home ranges. The territories ranging from 25 ha to 40 ha in size were defended against other territorial males though bachelor males were tolerated. Social organisation of the ropulation wns based on intraspecific aggressiveness and intolerance and the dominance of one individual over another. Various dominance displays are discussed. Although difficult to determine exactly, the gestation period was about 270 days, the peak calving period being early February. The peak rut took place during May and June although fenales were mated at other times during the year. Measurements and mass are given for 47 young calves which were captured, marked and released for field studies. The sable were found to be selective grazers of nediun height grass showing preference for new growth. Sable appeared to be water dependent, drinking mostly from l3h00 to l4h00. Twenty-eight plant species were recorded as food plants, four of which were dicotyledonous. Seasonal use of different habitats was recorded. Mortality factors in the study area included predation, accidental deaths and illegal hunting, with possible mortality from parasite infestation and fighting. Management of the species involves management of the sable population itself and managenent of the habitat in which they live. Management inplications are discussed. AFRIKAANS : Die doel van die huidige studie was om sekere bioekologiese verwantskappe van die Swrartwitpens Hippotragus niger niger (Harris, 1838) te bestudeer in die Rhodes Matopos Nationale Park in Rhodesië. Die plantetgroei van die area is in sewe subklasse verdeel en elk van die subklasse is bespreek. Die bevolking van ongeveer 200 Swartwitpense het uit drie hoof groepe bestaan, nl., die teelgroepe, vrygesel bulgroepe en territoriale bulle. Die samestelling van die teelgroepe het gewissel van seisoen tot seisoen. Die vrygesel bulgroepe het uit twee tot 12 jonger bulle bestaan wat nog nie 'n territoriale gebied afgebaken het nie. Die territoriale bulle kan volgens status in drie groepe verdeel word nl. klas I: sentraal territoriaal; klas II: aangrensend territoriaal en klas III: rand territoriaal ten opsigte van die weidingsgebied van die teelgroepe. Die Swartwitpens bevolking het 'n jaarlikse aanvas van tussen 26 - 29 persent gehad en die kalfpersentasie was tussen 56 - 67 persent. Die syfers is gebaseer op gegewens ingewin gedurende Oktober tot Desember vir die 1971 en 1972 seisoene. Den här uppsatsen handlar om soldaters upplevelser av bushkriget i Rhodesia. Bushkrigetstod mellan den statliga aktören Rhodesia och olika nationalistiska och kommunistiskagerillor, varför konflikten kom att präglas av COIN (Counter Insurgency), det vill säga militär upprorsbekämpning. Undersökningen utgörs av en kvalitativ textanalys av memoarer skrivna av rhodesiska veteraner efter krigets slut. Frågor som tas upp är hur soldaterna såg på sig själva och sina motståndare som aktörer samt hur de uppfattade kriget och metoderna de använde.

Shadows, faces and echoes of an African war: The Rhodesian bush war through the eyes of Chas Lotter – soldier poet

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Poetry that is rooted in that most extreme of human experiences, war, continues to grip the public imagination. When the poetry under scrutiny comes from the "losing side" in a colonial war of liberation, important moral and ethical questions arise. In this thesis, I examine the published and unpublished works of Chas Lotter, a soldier who fought in the Rhodesian Army during the Zimbabwean liberation war (1965- 1980). In investigating Lotter's artistic record of this war, I propose that a powerful, socially embedded Rhodesian national mythology was a catalyst for acceptance of, and participation in, the Rhodesian regime's ideological and military aims. A variety of postcolonial theoretical approaches will be used to explore the range of thematic concerns that emerge and to unpack the dilemmas experienced by a soldier-poet who took part in that conflict. Trauma theory, too, will be drawn upon to critically respond to the personal impact that participation in organized violence has upon combatants and non-combatants alike. The production and marketing of this cultural record will also be examined and in the conclusion, I speculate on the changes modern technology and evolving social mores may have on future developments in war literature. Finally, I conclude my case for installing the challenging work of this often conflicted and contradictory soldier-poet as a necessary adjunct to the established canon of Zimbabwean Chimurenga writing.

Social networks and economic life in rural Zambia

This thesis explores the relationship between social networks and economic life in rural Zambia. The motivation for the study lies in the crucial role played by social context and social networks in exchange behaviour in rural sub-Saharan Africa, and inherent difficulties in formalising market transactions in this context within a standard neoclassical economics framework. The study examines the role of social networks in rural production systems, focusing on crop market participation. It is based on analysis of findings from social network research conducted by the author in three predominantly Bemba villages in Northern Province, Zambia. Data collected using quantitative and qualitative methods are used to map social networks of individuals and households. Variables are constructed capturing network characteristics, and incorporated into transactions cost models of ommercialisation. The overarching question is: do social networks play a role in determining farming success in settings with little variability between households on assets and endowments – land, labour, inputs – and where markets are incomplete or missing? Do social networks mediate market and resource access, helping to explain socio-economic differences between households? The research finds rural life is characterised by diverse networks with multiple, overlapping functions. Much economic exchange takes place on reciprocal or kinship bases, rooted in social norms and reflecting community structures. How social networks are measured matters. Different network attributes are important for different people, and relationships between networks and outcomes depend on the measure used. Controlling for endogeneity, estimation results suggest larger networks have a negative effect on crop incomes whereas having a greater proportion of kin in the network has a positive effect, implying that in this context strong ties are key. Qualitative research suggests the nature of people's networks and their positions within them play an important role in the command over labour: “the famous always get their work done".

M.A. (History) / The purpose of this thesis Is to determine the role the British Government played In the events which led to the dismantling of the Central Africa Federation in 1963. After the dismantling, historians and other Interest-groups debated the question why the Central Africa Federation had failed. The whites In Rhodesia were convinced that the British government were responsible for the break-up. Britain was accused of yielding to black radical demands. These demands led to the Independence of both Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia, and they were allowed to secede from the Federation. Britain was also accused of having deliberately broken Its promises to the federal government. The federal government ultimately expected dominium Status for the Federation. Britain's policy of decolonlsatlon was also criticized by the whites and the colonial government was accused of deliberately following a policy of dismantlement. There were however other factors involved in the break-up of the Federation. The climate of decolonlsation and the growing number of Independent Africa states Influenced events In the Federation. The rise of African nationalism, liberation movements and pressure by black militant parties and leaders, brought about 8 withdrawal of colonial powers from Africa. Independent black states became a reality. Blacks In the Central African Federation soon followed this pattern. The partnership polley, on which the Federation was based, failed and blacks became Increasingly unsatisfied. Blacks did not have equal political rights and most of the blacks were excluded from the political structures. The Federation and partnership policy were seen as synonymous with racial discrimination and black national leaders started pressurislng Britain Into dissolving the Federation. The rise of black nationalism In the Federation resulted In fear for black domination on the part of the whites. A Federation where two out of three areas were dominated by blacks, was unacceptable to them. Therefore also white pressure for the dismantling of the Federation started to emerge. Britain's colonial policy in the crucial years, 1960-1963, Is examined as well as its strategies in dealing with a complex issue. Pressure by blacks as well as whites are taken into account In this study, to determine its influence on British actions that ultimately led to the break-up of the Federation.

The USA and Southern Rhodesia, 1953-1969

Existing studies of this topic have not made enough use of the British archives. Nor have they analysed the American domestic response to UDI in sufficient depth. The policies of successive American administrations as regards the Rhodesian problem can only be fully understood as part of Washington’s attitude to Britain, to Africa in general, and to southern Africa in particular. And, because the issue of white minority rule in Africa raised powerful emotions both in the African American community and among white opponents of civil rights, the Rhodesian crisis became a part of the politics of racial equality within the USA, playing a key role in the developing ideologies of these two communities. This thesis is based on research in both American and British archives and aims to show that the prevailing interpretation, especially of the policies of the Johnson Administration once Rhodesia had made its illegal declaration of independence in November 1965, is mistaken. Scholars have tended to take at face value the oft-repeated claim of US policy-makers that Rhodesia was a British problem, that they wished to be no more than helpful bystanders, supporting British efforts to see the downfall of the illegal regime and the creation of a government based on majority rule, and that when they did intervene, it was merely to urge the British to be firmer in their resolve to end the rebellion. The central contention of this thesis is that the officials shaping African policy in the Johnson Administration were intimately involved in the management of the crisis and that, far from resisting a solution that legitimised the white minority regime, they actively encouraged the British to settle with the illegal government.

Thesis (DPhil (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The discussion concerning the history of the Afrikaners as a white minority in Rhodesia is a purposeful attempt to historically investigate the presence and fundamental contributions of this particular population group. In methodological terms this study falls within the framework of diaspora and migration studies, movement of nations and the dynamics of minorities living in a host country. Since 1890 Afrikaners from South Africa, mostly as the result of the search for improved living conditions and job opportunities, gradually found their way to the territory north of the Limpopo River. The organised and individual treks, and the sporadic movement of Afrikaner immigrants to Rhodesia would lay the foundations of a self-supporting, though geographically straggling population group. In almost every terrain of life Afrikaners would participate in the provision of essential labour service. Since the Afrikaners mainly represented a rural population, they became very familiar with agricultural practices and surroundings. Predominantly, the Afrikaner farmers would in due time play a contributory role in the overall agricultural industry and economy of Rhodesia. The Afrikaner churches and cultural organisations in Rhodesia would decisively serve to unite Afrikaners religiously and socially, and to knit them together. The influence of Christian ministry and reformist mission work would not remain limited to Afrikaners, but would at the same time also include the Christianisation of black people. Politically, the Afrikaners lived in relatively friendly coexistence with the dominant English-speaking population of a British colony, although unsympathetic political attitudes, preconceived ideas and the fear of Afrikaner nationalism often hampered relations. The restrictive colonial immigration policies, compulsory military service and the rejection of Afrikaans as the second official medium of instruction by the Rhodesian authorities confirmed the political subjection of Afrikaners in Rhodesia. Mutual acceptance among Afrikaners and English-speaking Rhodesians would only emerge after the declaration of independence in 1965. Due to the aspiration of preserving their language and group and national identity, the Afrikaners would consequently not be politically assimilated into the mainstream of the English-speaking population. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die bespreking van die geskiedenis van die Afrikaners as blanke minderheid in Rhodesië is 'n doelbewuste poging om die teenwoordigheid en wesenlike bydraes van hierdie bepaalde bevolkingsgroep histories te ondersoek.
