A tale of three cities: advocacy and movement building among elderly women in California

Wollin, Heather Chelsey 03 September 2009 (has links)
In the spring of 2007, the Women’s Foundation of California and the California Endowment created what would become the Elder Women’s Initiative, (EWI) which focuses on building a social movement for elder women and their allies with specific attention to healthcare and economic security. This study is largely descriptive and focuses on how state and non-state actors participated in the Elder Women’s Initiative. I looked at ways in which their unique roles can shape the scope of the movement and in what capacity the notion of advocacy is defined. I used feminist and social movements theory to frame my study. The data collection was multi-phased: the first was interviews with state leaders at the policy and community-based level, and the second was “Speak-Outs” or community listening sessions in three geographic areas in California. During the Speak-Outs, which recruited elder women and their allies from low-income communities in California, the women were able to testify about their experiences with the aging process. They also spoke with policymakers about how to collaborate in building the movement. While the Elder Women’s Initiative raised more questions than it answered, participants identified several concrete recommendations were identified about how to build the movement. The current political landscape in California is fraught with tension over the recent budget crises. It is important for future researchers to examine the ways in which the EWI fits into the policy process and how women across California can experience dignified and healthy aging. / text

Development and Strategies of Cultural Industries in Korea

Chen, Yu-chu 26 June 2010 (has links)
The trend of globalization in 20th century and Asian financial crisis shocked or, from some scholars¡¦ viewpoint, even ended the East Asian model of economic development, which challenged the role of state. However, according to the concept of ¡¥monopoly rent¡¦ by David Harvey, culture is based on countries, history, nations, and identities. These elements are all related to state closely. Therefore, in the era of globalization, the role of state will not disappear, but be transformed. The thesis will emphasize the role of Korean government in developing cultural industries and will discuss the national policies since 1998 after Korea recovered from its imminent bankruptcy. Korea was nearly bankrupted in the Asian financial crisis in 1997. In 1998, Korean government adopted cultural industry as a national strategic industry. It introduced a bundle of plans, policies, laws, subsidies, and established related official departments to benefit enterprises and people and promote other industries. The strategies re-established national economy successfully; moreover, the ¡§Korean Wave¡¨ was formed and became a trend in Asia. Furthermore, the thesis starts from reviewing Korean history, including Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism from China, colonial culture from Japan, and Western culture from American armies. From the context of penetrating foreign culture influence, the thesis points out the components of Korean cultures, and uncovers Koreans¡¦ national and cultural identities, formation of nationalism, and global strategies of cultural industries.

Problematika právního pluralismu v soudobé společnosti. Slábnoucí role státu ve světle právního pluralismu / The issue of legal pluralism in contemporary society. A weakening role of state in the context of legal pluralism.

Orletová, Julie January 2021 (has links)
The issue of legal pluralism in contemporary society Abstract This work aims to describe the phenomenon of legal pluralism, its expressions and functioning in contemporary society and evaluate the findings in connection with the weakening role of the state. The role of law is changing more and more in today's global world, especially in an increasingly less homogeneous society. The plurality of contemporary society is increasingly penetrating normative systems, which in turn affects the very functioning of the state as an authority. Legal pluralism reflects the life of contemporary society. From the perspective of legal pluralism, we gain a new understanding of law. The concept of legal pluralism enables the law to respond in a more flexible way to the plurality of contemporary society, as law increasingly faces difficulties in reflecting the social reality of contemporary society. Related to laws that do not reflect this plurality is a growing distrust of people in the state and its institutions, which contributes to the weakening role of the state. One of the possibilities for the state to strengthen its role is to restore confidence of the citizens in the state and its institutions. This can be also achieved by creating good written law. State law should take into account the phenomenon of legal...

Our aim is to research at a macroeconomic level the correlations between those policies during both administrations, to find out how different or similar they were and to assess the economic impacts thereof in Brazil s modern society. In the first chapter we shall approach the debated between those who defended a more liberal economy and those who appeared under the flag of the National Developmentalism (who favored deeper state intervention), in order to understand how those two currents influenced both parties, Fernando Henrique s PSBD (social democracy) and Lula s PT (labor). We shall analyze both parties platforms, respectively from the 1994 and the 2002 campaigns, as well as the general economic and political landscape during both administrations. In the second chapter, we shall break down the pro-market tenets held by the liberals and examine the privatization of state-owned enterprises during the Fernando Henrique s administration. In the third chapter, we shall focus on the supporters of the National Developmentalism and their reformed policies toward a state-led economy during Lula s second term (2007-2010), and especially during the financial crisis of 2008, considering how those policies were reflected in the role of BNDES. We consider that from such a correlation one may arrive at interesting conclusions as to the continuation or interruption of economic policies during both administrations / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a visão do papel do Estado na economia nos governos dos presidentes Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995/2000), do PSDB, e Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003/2010), do PT, sob a ótica da utilização do BNDES por esses governos como ferramenta para execução de suas políticas econômicas.
