During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries we can find many studies on the classification of disciplines, their specifities and differences. Scholars of this period as Petrus Ramus (1515-1572), Christoph Clavius (1538-1612), Adriaan van Roomen (1561- 1615) and Francis Bacon (1561-1626) not only dedicated to sort, organize and prioritize those disciplines they denominated of mathematical disciplines, but also to study the nature of mathematical knowledge in order to understand if the type of statement made by mathematical disciplines produced a certain and indubitable knowledge, and to establish relatioships with other áreas, specially with philosophy. in this thesis, I analyse the work Universae Mathesis Idea (1602) and the liber pirmus of Mathesis Polemica (1605), wich contain a short description of the eighteen disciplines wich van Roomen calls mathematics. Such disciplines are divided into two groups: the principal mathematics wich are subdivided into pure mathematics (logistics, prima mathesis, arithmetic, and geometry) and mixed mathematics (astronomy, uranography, chronology, cosmography, geography, chorography, topography, topothesis, astrology, geodesy, music, optics, and euthymetria); and mechanical mathematics (sphaeropoeia, manganaria, mechanopoetica, organopoetica, and thaumatopoetica) that are related to the use and construction machinery, a subject that is directly related to mathematics instrumentation, which developed quite period. The author also presentes a brief chapter about the subjects he calls the almost mathematics. The description of van Roomen's mathematical disciplines includes among other things, the object of study, the principles, the place in relation to other disciplines and the usefulness of each. Seek contributions to studies on the life and work of van Roomen, and also try to understand some aspects of the philosophical status of mathematics at the time. Furthermore, I am ...

During the Middle Ages the astronomy was studied as one of the disciplines of the quadrivium, part of the liberal arts where they approached the math, and in the Renaissance the study of astronomy as part of the mathematical disciplines went even on for some time and several scholars have continued to devote himself to the publication of works on the subject. Adriaan van Roomen (1561-1615), renaissance mathematician and physician, wrote several works about to astronomy, among which we mention its Ouranographia sive caeli descriptio (1591). In this work we present the first direct translation from Latin to Portuguese of the Ouranographia and add notes and comments on the issues addressed in some of the chapters of the work. In the Ouranographia, we clearly see the interconnectedness of different fields of science, not only in what we consider as mathematics and astronomy, but also with regard to astrology, philosophy and history. The van Roomen’ Ouranographia consists of three books: in the liber primus, describes generally the heaven machine, its matter and form, their movements and orbs; in the liber secundus, describes the heaven first and the celestial circles and lines that we use to refer being here on Earth, in the liber tertius, explains the mobile first, their movements and circles. We perceive that van Roomen makes a compilation of much of the existing knowledge on the subject from antiquity to his time, and through their citations, we perceive still that he had contact with works by several authors, is showing a great intellectual

The role of Sardinia and Corsica in space protected papal / Dinamiche politiche nel Tirreno dall’XI al XII secolo.
This thesis aims to investigate the process of creation and subsequent management policy by the Apostolic Seat of the space centered on the Italian peninsula and its two seas, Tyrrhenian and Adriatic during the years of the Gregorian reform. In particular, the object of investigation concerns the Tyrrhenian part of this space and the lands bordering. The islands of Sardinia and Corsica were linked to the Apostolic Seat by a complex institutional and ecclesiastical relationships; on the other bank, the northern Italian coast, centered on the city of Pisa, was linked by an equally complex relationship with the Apostolic Seat, oscillating between subordination and autonomy of action within the geopolitical space of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The historical reconstruction has so far focused mainly on the « regional » aspects, which have seen the development of the large and influential tradition of studies on the relationships between the papacy and the Normans, the Papacy and the « repubbliche marinare », or surveys on Papacy and Sardinia and papacy and Corsica. It is instead intended to focus on the point of view of each Pope on Tyrrhenian area, starting with Gregory VII. This facts can be linked to a more general reflection on the relationship between the popes and a system in constant evolution: Rome in the international contest. In the first decades of the reform of the Church (1040-1080 approximately), the territorial entity papal had not yet become a mature and structured administrative and institutional reality, nevertheless the power of the pope and there was noticeable in its concreteness, ecclesiastical and doctrinal, in First, but also political and decision-making in all Christendom of the time, although with different intensities due to the physical distance from Rome.It is intended, therefore, to develop this initial idea, trying to reconstruct a history prosopographical and thematic policy of the Roman pontiffs in the territories of the Tyrrhenian space, thus trying to identify new research topics previously overlooked or only superficially by historiography general.

J.-C. – IVe siècle ap. J.-C.)Davoine, Charles 03 December 2015 (has links)
: Partially destroyed buildings, the remains of which persist in time, ruins were part of the reality of Ancient Rome. This research aims at investigating the way the populations of the Empire, the local magistrates or the Roman central power perceived and managed dilapidated buildings as well as the piles of debris resulting from destructions. This study will focus on the everyday life of cities faced with the dilapidation of buildings as well as with exceptional devastations caused by catastrophes, from the Augustinian age to the end of the fourth century A.D. Through a thorough study of literary, legal and epigraphic sources, the purpose is to analyze how ruins were dealt with, taking into account the rules and norms which applied to them, as well as the mental representations which enabled their understanding. We shall demonstrate that ruins have no place in the city. Demolitions should always be avoided, and dilapidated building should be restored. Any aesthetic aspect of the ruins, or their use as places of memory, are absent from Latin texts. On the contrary, dilapidated buildings and destroyed cities are associated with death and unsightliness and reflect a troubled era. Ruins constitute a counter-model which enables the revelation, by contrast, of an ideal architecture which contributes to the ornamentation of the city and to the elaboration of the Golden Age announced by the Emperor.

J.-C. / The pottery of the Armorican Peninsula from the late 1st century BC to the 4th ADBrunie, Isabelle 13 January 2017 (has links)
The research aim to take stock, as exhaustive as possible, on the Gallo-Roman ceramic of the western part of Lyonnaise province defined by the territories of the civitates of the Veneti, of Coriosolite, of Osismii and Redones. This regional summary presents the development of a catalogue of forms and a typo chronological approach. This first corpus is composed of 792 forms divided into 20 major technical and functional categories. An open ranking system was used in order to make additions according to new discoveries. The analysis of 34 pottery assemblages from 21 sites defined eight horizons from the second half of the 1st century BC until the first decades of the 4th century AD. They offer a first look of the evolution of consumed ceramics and supplying strategies during this period.
