Remote sensing for site-specific management of biotic and abiotic stress in cottonFalkenberg, Nyland Ray 30 September 2004 (has links)
This study evaluated the applicability of remote sensing instrumentation for site- specific management of abiotic and biotic stress on cotton grown under a center pivot. Three different irrigation regimes (100%, 75%, and 50% ETc) were imposed on a cotton field to 1) monitor canopy temperatures of cotton with infrared thermometers (IRTs) in order to pinpoint areas of biotic and abiotic stress, 2) compare aerial infrared photography to IRTs mounted on center pivots to correlate areas of biotic and abiotic stress, and 3) relate yield to canopy temperatures. Pivot-mounted IRTs and IR camera were able to differentiate water stress between the irrigation regimes, however, only the IR camera was effectively able to distinguish between biotic (cotton root rot) and abiotic (drought) stress with the assistance of groundtruthing. The 50% ETc regime had significantly higher canopy temperatures, which were reflected in significantly lower lint yields when compared to the 75% and 100% ETc regimes. Deficit irrigation up to 75% ETc had no impact on yield, indicating that water savings were possible without yield depletion.

High temperature predisposition of sweet pepper to Pythium root rot and its remediation by Pseudomonas chlororaphisSopher, Coralie 09 May 2012 (has links)
Pythium root rot caused by Pythium aphanidermatum, a destructive disease of sweet pepper and other hydroponic crops, is characterized by root browning (necrosis) and reduces growth of roots and shoots. Serious losses in crop productivity are common, in part for lack of adequate control measures. Severe root rot has been previously associated with episodes of high temperature, but whether this is due to high temperature effects on the host, the pathogen, or their interaction remains unclear. To clarify these relationships, and to provide a basis for predicting rapid increases in root rot, quantitative experiments were conducted to determine how episodes of high root-zone temperature are associated with root browning. Pepper plants were grown separately in hydroponic units containing aerated nutrient solution positioned in temperature-controlled water baths. The root zone temperature was 23°C except during high temperature treatments. Browning developed progressively earlier in roots that were maintained at 33°C for 9 to 144 h immediately before they were inoculated with zoospores of P. aphanidermatum, and in all instances earlier than
in control plants maintained continuously at 23°C. The data demonstrated unequivocally that high root-zone temperature can predispose pepper plants to Pythium root rot. Browning also developed earlier when root inoculation with P. aphanidermatum was delayed as long as 216 h following exposure at 33°C for 72 h, indicating that predisposition of the host by high temperature episodes can persist for at least 9 days. The ability of Pseudomonas chlororaphis strain 63-28 to suppress Pythium root rot and promote plant growth was investigated in pepper plants grown in the hydroponic units and predisposed to the disease, i.e. plants were predisposed to high temperature (33°C for 72 h ending at 3 days before inoculation) or not predisposed (constant 23°C). When P. chlororaphis was applied in the nutrient solution at a final density of 107 CFU mL-1 7 days before the high temperature episode, the agent delayed root browning, re-mediated predisposition to root rot, and increased growth of plants that were and were not inoculated with P. aphanidermatum. It is concluded that high temperature predisposed pepper seedlings to root rot and that strain 63-28 has substantial potential for managing root rot regardless of predisposition by high temperature.

Diversité et combinaison des modes d'actions des QTL de résistance à Aphanomyces euteiches chez le pois / Diversity and combination of effects and action modes of Aphanomyces root rot resistance QTLl in peaLavaud, Clément 29 October 2015 (has links)
In the pea/Aphanomyces euteiches pathosystem, which has a major economic importance, the aim of this study was to validate the single or combined effects of main resistance QTL, and study their action modes on steps of the pathogen life cycle. A total of 157 pea NILs (Near Isogenic Lines) created by Marker-Assisted Back-crossing and carrying no, one, two or three of the seven main resistance QTL previously identified, was genotyped using a 15K SNPs array and evaluated for resistance. The NILs carrying major-effect QTL, individually or in combination with minor-effect QTL, had increased levels of partial resistance in controlledconditions and in the field compared to NILs without QTL, in different genetic backgrounds. Several NILs carrying single or multiple minor-effect QTL also showed reduced levels of disease severity in one or the two test conditions. Most of the QTL had significant effects on slowing down infection and/or pathogen DNA quantity which had colonized the root for seven days after inoculation. This study gives tools and information for the choice of resistance QTL to use in pyramiding breeding strategies for increasing partial levels of resistance to A. euteiches in future pea varieties.

Efficacy of water soluble silicon for control of phytophthora cinnamomi root rot of avocadoBekker, Theo Frederik 17 September 2007 (has links)
In the current study potassium silicate (20.7% SiO2) induced a 100% inhibition of P. cinnamomi mycelial growth at all concentrations tested. Total inhibition for all fungi tested (Alternaria solani, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Curvularia lunata, Drechslera sp., Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Glomerella cingulata, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Mucor pusillus, Natrassia sp., Pestalotiopsis maculans, Phomopsis perniciosa, Phytophthora capsicii, Phytophthora cinnamomi, Pythium F-group, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Sclerotium rolfsii, Stemphylium herbarum and Verticillium tricorpus) was attained at a concentration of 40ml.l-1 and higher. Although the high pH of potassium silicate solutions does contribute to the inhibition of fungal growth, the inhibitory effect of potassium silicate on fungal growth in vitro is mostly fungicidal rather than attributed to a pH effect. Phytophthora root rot of avocado nursery trees can be inhibited successfully by potassium silicate application. The effectiveness of potassium silicate application depends however on the repetition of applications. These findings are of paramount importance as this implies that potassium silicate may be a alternative control measure to inhibit the effects of P. cinnamomi on avocado nursery trees. Silicon either stimulates plant growth or imparts some form of protection to avocado roots if applied prior to P. cinnamomi inoculation. Potassium silicate applied as a soil drench resulted in higher root densities compared to that of potassium phosphonate (Avoguard®) injections and untreated control trees. Reapplication again resulted in the best disease suppression and stimulation of new root growth. These results correlated well with tree canopy ratings, as trees that received silicon frequently, showed better canopy conditions compared to the untreated control treatments. Potassium silicate application leads to effective inhibition of Phytophthora cinnamomi infection in avocado orchards. Potassium silicate application resulted in an increase of crude phenols and phenolic polymers in avocado roots cells to similar levels to that obtained in roots from potassium phosphonate (Avoguard®) treated trees. Potassium silicate application leads to lower cell wall bound phenolics. The results of the current study support the hypothesis that silicon application, through an elevation of the total phenolic levels, causes an increase of resistance against P. cinnamomi root rot in avocados. AFRIKAANS : Kaliumsilikaat (20.7% SiO2) induseer ‘n 100% inhibisie van P. cinnamomi groei by alle getoetste konsentrasies. Kaliumsilikaat toediening lei to effektiewe inhibisie van Phytophthora cinnamomi infeksie in avokado boorde. Soilborne Pathogens Of Strawberry In The Central Coast Region Of California: Survey And Cover Cropping With Wheat For Management Of Macrophomina PhaseolinaSteele, Mary 01 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Surveys of the four major soilborne pathogens of strawberry (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae, Macrophomina phaseolina, Phytophthora spp., and Verticillium dahliae) to determine their relative prevalence were conducted in Watsonville-Salinas, CA in 2021 and in Santa Maria, CA in 2022. All four major pathogens were detected at relatively similar prevalence in Watsonville-Salinas, between 22% and 31% of sampled fields. In Santa Maria, M. phaseolina was far more prevalent at 52% of sampled fields, the other three falling between 14% and 17%. Additionally replicated greenhouse and field trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of wheat as a single season cover crop on Macrophomina root rot of strawberry and the soil microbiome. Greenhouse trials and the first year of the field trial are described here and demonstrate a lack of substantial disease mitigation or pathogen reduction in the soil following wheat growth compared to no-treatment control. Significant changes were seen in the soil microbiome following wheat growth, including the significant amplification of several bacterial species known to be antagonistic to plant-pathogenic fungi.

Despite the excellent soil and climatic conditions for avocado production in Brazil, the culture has limitations related to low productivity and susceptibility to avocado root rot caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi, the main crop disease in all producing areas. Mulching is one of the strategies utilized for controlling this disease, with several benefits such as an improved soil water and nutrients availability for roots, reduced weed competition, improved soil structure, porosity and fertility and enhanced plant health condition, due to the creation of a suppressive environment for the development of the pathogen, by increasing root density and the population of antagonistic microorganisms. All these benefits of natural mulches, together with the supply of nutrients and assimilates after their incorporation to the soil, indirectly enhance fruit yield and size. The aim of this work was to evaluate different managements of inter-row vegetation in an adult \'Hass\' avocado orchard in order to obtain mulches which, after being applied to the soil, will allow reducing root rot incidence, thus promoting improvement of plant sanitary condition, with positive effects on fruit yield. From 2011 through 2013, five treatments were evaluated: T1: absence of inter-row vegetation, without mulch application under the canopy; T2: absence of inter-row vegetation and two applications of external mulch under the canopy: T3: two mulch depositions under the canopy obtained after cutting off the inter-row vegetation with a lateral alignment mower (LAM); T4: three mulch depositions under the canopy obtained after cutting off the inter-row vegetation with a LAM, and T5: maintenance of natural inter-row vegetation with three annual cuttings using a conventional mower, without mulch deposition under the canopy. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, with 6 repetitions and 3 plants per plot, on which the following variables were measured: levels of macro and micronutrients in leaves and soil; root and plant size development; fruit yield and size; plant sanitary condition visually assessed with a 10-note scale; biomass of inter-row vegetation; mulch thickness and chemical and microbiological soil characteristics. Mulching resulted in larger plant growth and fruit size, with no significant effects on fruit yield. Application of mulch obtained with a LAM enhanced root growth in the surface soil layer. Nonetheless, the treatments did not significantly affect nor the plant sanitary aspect, neither the leaf or soil levels of macro and micronutrients. Management of inter-row vegetation with a conventional mower resulted in larger biomass development, while managing inter-row vegetation with two or three cuttings with LAM per year resulted in similar amounts of mulch laid down under the canopy, yet less than with the application of external mulch (T2). All the treatments with mulch deposition suppressed weed growth under the canopy. In the treatment with no mulch and no inter-row cropping, a larger population of P. cinnamomi was recorded. There were no differences in the Actinomycetes soil population among treatments.

Previous issue date: 2009-03-10 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Brazil is the main papaya’s producer in the world (Carica papaya L.) and it occupies the first position producing 1,65 million tones, thus, it is an important production with economic and social value, and, in this meaning, Bahia stands out as the largest producing state with a Brazilian production of 724 tons. Many diseases cause damage to the crop by increasing the cost of production, in some cases limiting the exploitation of that production, among those we can highlight diseases like papaya root damage caused by Phytophthora palmivora. This present study aimed: 1) to achieve the level of infestation of P. palmivora in soils of plantations of papaya commercial in the Extreme South of Bahia, to better support the measures of control; 2) ) to evaluate the action of biotic and abiotic inducers in order to increase the root rot in seedlings of papaya inoculated with P. palmivora, in the activity of enzymes of defense, 1,3-glucanase, peroxidase and chitinase, as well as the lignin content of roots; and 3) to analyze the effect of species of Trichoderma spp. on control of P. palmivora etiologic agent of root rot of papaya. In evaluating of the results of infestation of the soil of papaya orchards, it was showed that in those 33 areas assessed, only two of them, the presence of P. palmivora was not found. There was also no significant differences (p <0.05) for incidence of that pathogen, as those varieties of papaya grown in samples soil evaluated. In all eight municipalities that had sampled orchards the presence of the pathogen was detected, and it showed its wide distribution in the Extreme South of Bahia. To evaluate the control of foot rot in papaya seedlings, it was noted that the treatments using ASM, except the dosage 0.15 g / L 6 days before inoculation, showed levels of larger control to the other inductors. Plants sprayed with ASM showed increased activity of peroxidase and -1,3-glucanase and a highest concentration of lignin in relation to the witness. However, these treatments have no effect on the activity of chitinase. The ASM is a potential inducer of resistance to P. palmivora for using it in the management of root rot of papaya. As the assessment of agents of biocontrol happened it was noted that as using 33 isolated of Trichoderma only 2 isolated (T70 - T. harzianum, T68 - T. virens) did not differ statistically from that treatment with the standard fungicide and showed the percentage of survival of 58.3 and 52.4 respectively. The effect of these two isolated of Trichoderma on increase of dry mass and fresh in seedlings of papaya was also evaluated and it was noted that those two isolates showed higher increases in these parameters when compared with witness. The isolated T70 and T68 showed an increase of fresh and dry mass total of 110, 73% and 59; 59% respectively, compared with those witnesses only planted in the soil. The isolates of T. harzianum and T. virens presented potential with biocontrol agent of P. palmivora for being used in the management of root rot of papaya.

Effects of Oilseed Meals and Isothiocyanates (ITCS) on Phymatotrichopsis omnivora (Cotton Root Rot) and Soil Microbial CommunitiesHu, Ping 2012 May 1900 (has links)
The meals from many oilseed crops contain biocidal chemicals that are known to inhibit the growth and activity of several soil pathogens, though little is known concerning impacts on whole soil microbial communities. We investigated the effect of oilseed meals (SMs) from both brassicaceous plants, including mustard and camelina, as well as non-brassicaceous plants, including jatropha and flax, on P. omnivora (the casual agent of cotton root rot) in Branyon clay soil (at 1 and 5% application rates). We also investigated the effect of SMs from camelina, jatropha, flax, and wheat straw on microbial communities in Weswood loam soil. We also used four types of isothiocyanates (ITCs) including allyl, butyl, phenyl, and benzyl ITC to test their effects on P. omnivora growth on potato dextrose agar (PDA), as well as on soil microbial communities in a microcosm study. Community qPCR assays were used to evaluate relative abundances of soil microbial populations. Soil microbial community composition was determined through tag-pyrosequencing using 454 GS FLX titanium technology, targeting ITS and 16S rRNA gene regions for fungal and bacterial communities, respectively.
The results showed that all tested brassicaceous and jatropha SMs were able to inhibit P. omnivora sclerotial germination and hyphal growth, with mustard SM being the most effective. Flax didn't show any inhibitory effects on sclerotial germination. All tested ITCs inhibited P. omnivora OKAlf8 hyphal growth, and the level of inhibition varied with concentration and ITC type. Total soil fungal populations were reduced by ITC addition, and microbial community compositions were changed following SM and ITC application. These changes varied according to the type of SM or ITC added. Our results indicated that SMs of several brassicaceous species as well as jatropha may have potential for reducing cotton root rot as well as some other pathogens. Different SMs releasing varied ITCs may result in differential impacts on soil microorganisms including some pathogens.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-17 / CNPq / Phytophthora rot, caused by Phytophthora sojae causes seed rotting, damping-off, and also root and stem necrosis. Phytophthora rot has been occurring frequently in soybean crops in southern Brazil, even with the use of resistant cultivars. In the 2015/16 harvest, soybean crops in southern Brazil were surveyed to detect plants with Phytophthora rot. Thirty-two samples were analyzed, and the diagnosis and the attempt of isolation in specific culture medium were performed. The disease was detected in 62.5 % of them, and seven pathogen isolates were obtained. The disease was predominant in crops under monoculture, with aggravation in livestock-crop integration system areas. In a second experiment the soybean cultivars BMX ELITE IPRO, BMX APOLO RR, BMX ALVO RR, NA 5909 IPRO and NS 6909 IPRO were tested using a P. sojae isolate with virulence formula Rps1d, 2,3b, 3c, 4, 5,6,7, to verify the reaction of these cultivars to this isolate. All cultivars tested were resistant to the isolates. In a third experiment, soybean seeds of cultivar CD 202 IPRO, susceptible to P. sojae were treated with mixtures of chemical and microbiological fungicides. Plants from these treatments were inoculated with P. sojae mycelium in the hypocotyl, through two inoculation methods, at 6 (syringe method) and at 12 days (stick method). The seeds were also sown on a substrate containing P. sojae inoculum, like a third method of inoculation. Each experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates of 12 plants per treatment. The experiments were replicated. The active ingredient (ia) mefenoxam at a dose of 7.5 g (100 kg of seeds) guaranteed the emergence of soybean seedlings in P. sojae infested soil superior to the other fungicides used, reduced the severity of the disease and provided greater root dry mass. No fungicide was effective when inoculation was performed on the hypocotyl of the seedling / A podridão de fitóftora, causada por Phytophthora sojae causa apodrecimento de sementes, tombamento de plântulas, necrose das raízes e da haste da soja.
