Redukovaný model vírového proudění / Reduced order model of swirling flow

This thesis deals with the formulation and application of reduced order models based on extraction of dominant structures from a system utilizing the method of proper orthogonal decomposition. Time evolution of computed modes is described by a system of ordinary differential equations, which is gained by means of Galerkin projection of these modes onto the Navier-Stokes equations. This methodology was applied on two test cases Kármán vortex street and vortex rope. In both cases, a CFD simulation of one refference point was carried out and by utilizing gained modes, the corresponding reduced order models were formulated. Their results were assessed by comparing to the refference simulation.

Freedom through restriction is an artistic project which investigates movement, freedom of expression and the value of restrictions in creative processes, through my experience. Through this study, I aim to develop innovative methods to encourage myself and fellow practitioners to connect with the body, to expand awareness and knowledge of the circus practice through the self, and to think through movement for creative, artistic, and pedagogical purposes. The source material is videos of my movement research, relevant literature and texts that I have been writing throughout the two-year Master Programme at the Stockholm University of the Arts.I start by introducing the concept of restricted verticality, an involuntary alteration of the normalized environment of aerial disciplines, where the vertical space is stripped to the minimum. Adaptation, sensing, rope manipulation are methods extrapolated from the exploration of the limited vertical space. Learning to shift conditions voluntarily becomes a method to unlock new possibilities and to acquire deeper knowledge of the circus practice. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a less anthropocentric approach to circus apparatus and a shift in virtuosity that differ to the standardized ones of athletic prowess and dominance over the objects, to enable circus artists to become active creators and improve a sense of availability towards other animate and inanimate bodies. The last chapter is dedicated to my Final Major Project, a physical representation of my study at the end of the Master course, and how this experience informed my practice further.Restriction is throughout a framed space of investigation, where environment, bodies and task-based improvisation approaches are all intended as spaces within which there is an infinite number of possibilities to explore freely and discover their full potentialities. The mutual relationship between restriction and freedom of movement is opportunity for artistic research processes.

Parallel and Allegory is a series of four pieces that look deeper into specific Christian beliefs. Most directly addressed those that dealt with specific parallels and allegorical relationships. Specific symbols such as nails, hammers, wood, trees, people, fruit, a cup, knife a rope and a stone were the focus of the pieces in the exhibition. Four combinations of these symbols were created to create dialogue and introspection.

Dynamics of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) towing another AUV

This thesis proposes a method to simulate the dynamics of an autonomous underwater vehicle towing another autonomous underwater vehicle of equivalent size using a marine cable in the vertical and horizontal plane. There is a coupling effect between the two vehicles because the towed vehicle is of equivalent size. This means that the towed vehicle cannot be modeled as just a payload but rather, must incorporate the forces and moments experienced and acting on it. In this work, only AUVs with symmetrical hulls are considered, where the towing AUV is moving at a constant velocity with a set thrust while the towed AUV has no thrust. The rope system is another important component that needs to be modeled correctly because the rope material and type significantly impact the motion of the vehicles. The rope system in this study is modeled using a numerical approach called the lumped mass spring damper method which is easy to understand and computationally inexpensive. The rope model accounts for buoyancy differences in different ropes and permits cable flexibility. This thesis enables us to study the motion of multiple combinations of different ropes and axi-symmetric types of underwater vehicles with any fixed or movable fin configuration. / M.S. / This thesis studies the motion of an autonomous underwater vehicle towing another autonomous underwater vehicle which is a large as it is. The towed vehicle cannot be assumed to be just a mass attached to the towing vehicle. There is an interaction between the two vehicle. The towed vehicle places a force on the towed vehicle and the towed vehicle likewise places a force on the towing vehicle. This interaction needs to be modeled correctly to fully capture the impact of both vehicles and their appendages. Additionally, the rope system poses a huge impact on the two vehicle depending on what type of rope is selected. Multiple factors affect the performance of a rope such as the shape and the elasticity. Some ropes may also be denser due to their material type and are less buoyant than others. These factors are considered in the modeling of the overall system and allows us to study different combinations of ropes and symmetric hulled autonomous underwater vehicles.

Shear strengthening of continuous reinforced concrete T-beams using wire rope units

A simple unbonded-type shear strengthening technique for reinforced concrete beams using wire rope units is presented. Ten two-span reinforced concrete T-beams externally strengthened with wire rope units and an unstrengthened control beam were tested to failure, to explore the significance and shortcomings of the developed unbonded-type shear strengthening technique. The main parameters investigated were the type, amount and prestressing force of wire rope units. All beams tested failed, owing to significant diagonal cracks within the interior shear span. However, beams strengthened with closed type wire rope units exhibited more ductile failure than the unstrengthened, control beam or those strengthened with U-type wire rope units. The diagonal cracking load and ultimate shear capacity of beams with closed-type were linearly increased with the increase of vertical confinement stresses in concrete owing to the prestressing force in wire rope units, while those of beams with U-type were minimally influenced. It was also observed that average stresses in closed-type wire ropes crossing diagonal cracks at ultimate strength of beams tested were much higher than those in U-type wire ropes, showing better utilization in the former case. The shear capacity of beams with closed-type wire rope units is conservatively predicted using the equations of ACI 318-05, modified to account for the external wire rope units. A mechanism analysis based on the upper bound approach of the plasticity theory is also developed to assess the load capacity of beams tested. The predictions by the mechanism analysis for beams with closed-type wire rope units are in good agreement with test results and showed a coefficient of variation slightly less than the modified ACI 318-05 equations. However, the modified ACI 318-05 equations are more conservative and simpler to use for design purposes.

Dynamics of a Small Autonomous Underwater Vehicle That Tows a Large Payload

This thesis presents the derivation of the dynamic model of an autonomous underwater vehicle that tows a large payload. Our analysis is motivated by the fact that the payload is so large that it cannot be modeled by simply appending its dynamics to the dynamics of the autonomous underwater vehicle. Hence, the coupling between the vehicle and payload must be fully modeled. Furthermore, several approximation techniques based on analytic and empirical formulations are investigated for computing the hydrodynamic coefficients of the vehicle. Efficacy and limitations of the approximation techniques are assessed by comparison with hydrodynamic coefficients that are estimated using high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations. / Master of Science / This thesis presents the model to used to predict the motion of an autonomous underwater vehicle that tows a large object. Our analysis is motivated by the fact that the size of the object is so large that it will have a substantial impact on the motion of the vehicle, and likewise the vehicle will have a substantial impact on the object, requiring that the interaction between the two bodies to be fully modeled. The fluid forces and moments acting on the vehicle are approximated using techniques from hydrodynamic theory and experimental results. The accuracy of the approximation is assessed by comparing of the estimated forces and moments with those seen in high-fidelity simulations.

An Assessment of the EMAS Pump and its Potential for Use in Household Water Systems in Uganda

Rural improved water supply coverage in Uganda has stagnated around 64% for a number of years and at this point more than 10 million rural people do not have access to an improved drinking water source. It has been recognized that progress toward improved water supply coverage and increased service levels may be gained through Government and nongovernmental organization (NGO) support of private investment in household and shared water supplies, commonly known as Self-supply. Self-supply can be promoted by introducing and building local capacity in appropriate and affordable water supply technologies such as hand-dug wells, manually drilled boreholes, low-cost pumps, and rainwater harvesting. Support can also be focused on technical support, marketing, financing, and strategic subsidies that promote and enhance user investment. The Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment has embraced Self-supply as a complementary part of its water supply strategy while government and NGO programs that support Self-supply have emerged. The EMAS Pump is a low-cost handpump appropriate for use in household water systems in the developing world. There are more than 20,000 in use in Bolivia, with many constructed through Self-supply. The EMAS Pump is constructed from simple materials costing about $US 10-30, depending largely on installation depth, and can be fabricated with simple tools in areas with no electricity. The EMAS Pump is used with low-cost groundwater sources such as hand-dug wells and manually drilled boreholes or with underground rainwater storage tanks. It can lift water from 30 m or more below ground and pump water with pressure overland or to an elevated tank. The objectives of this research were to conduct an assessment of the EMAS Pump that considers pumping rates, required energy, and associated costs, to characterize the EMAS Pump for its potential for use in household water systems in Uganda, and to make relevant recommendations. The potential of the EMAS Pump was assessed through testing its use with 2 subject participants (male and female) on wells of 5.1 m, 12.6 m, 17.0 m, 18.4 m, 21.1 m, and 28.3 m static water levels as part of a side-by-side comparative assessment with the Family Model version of the Rope Pump, a more widely known low-cost handpump that has recently been introduced and promoted in Uganda. Shallow and deep versions of each pump were tested on selected wells for 40-liter pumping trials. The status and feasibility of low-cost groundwater development and underground storage tanks were also explored in order to help characterize the potential of the EMAS Pump as an option for low-cost household water systems in Uganda. In general, it was observed that the EMAS Pump performed comparably to the Rope Pump in terms of pumping rates for shallow depths, but the Rope Pump outperformed it on deeper wells. It was determined that the EMAS Pump required more energy for pumping during nearly all trials. A study of relevant supply chains in Uganda concluded that the EMAS pump has a material cost that is less than 50% of the Rope Pump for most applications and 21% of the cost for shallow wells. It was also determined that the EMAS Pump could feasibly be produced nearly anywhere in the country. There are indications that low-cost wells and underground rainwater tanks are applicable in many parts of Uganda and could be paired with an EMAS Pump to achieve significant affordability for Self-supply household water systems. Recommendations are provided in terms of the feasibility of introducing the EMAS Pump as a part of Self-supply strategy in Uganda.
