Strength and Deformation Characteristics of a Cement-Treated Reclaimed Pavement with a Chip SealWilson, Bryan T. 17 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this research was to analyze the strength and deformation characteristics of a cement-treated base (CTB) constructed using full-depth reclamation, microcracked, and then surfaced with a single chip seal. In this field study, strength characteristics of the CTB layer were determined at the time of construction, and then both strength and deformation characteristics were evaluated after 9 months of low-volume, heavy truck traffic. After 9 months, observed distresses included transverse cracking, rutting, and chip seal joint failure. The loss of the chip seal was caused by poor chip seal construction practices and not a deficiency in the CTB layer. The importance of the role of the chip seal as a wearing course was made evident by these failures since the exposed CTB often exhibited material loss. The average ride qualities in and out of the wheel path were in the fair ride category; the roughness was not likely caused by trafficking but probably resulted from construction or climatic factors. Structural testing performed after 9 months of service indicated that the CTB stiffness and modulus were greater than the values measured after microcracking at the time of construction, indicating continued strength gain. However, trafficking over the 9-month period had caused significantly lower stiffnesses measured in the wheel paths than between the wheel paths. The average unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the cores tested at 9 months was not significantly different than the average UCS of the field-compacted specimens tested at 6 weeks. Based on the observed performance of the CTB and chip seal evaluated in this research, recommendations for improved CTB performance include the use of a thicker and/or stiffer CTB layer, ensuring a smooth CTB surface during construction, and application of a double chip seal or equivalent.

Digitalt optimeringsverktyg i den operativa verksamheten : En analys av ett beslutsstöd för att minimera uppkomsten av körskador / Digital decision support tool in operational planning : Analysis on how to minimize the risk of ruttingdamages by using a decision support tool.Warg, Maria January 2023 (has links)

Performance Analysis and Modeling of Pavements with a Cold Central Plant Recycled Base under Accelerated Loading TestingZimmerman, Cory Tyler 18 September 2017 (has links)
Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) has been used by many state highway agencies to save material, money, time, and energy in pavement construction and rehabilitation. The objectives of this thesis were to: (1) perform an instrumented verification analysis, (2) evaluate the response and performance of two pavement configurations with a CCPR base layer through accelerated pavement testing (APT), and (3) construct models using mechanistic-empirical pavement design software for comparison with the APT results. The pavement configurations featured a 5-inch CCPR mixture with either a 3-inch or 1.5-inch SM-9.5D surface mixture. Each section was instrumented with strain gauges, pressure cells, and thermocouples. A heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) was used to load three replicate test sections in each lane, with the temperature controlled at 39°C at a depth of 1.5 inches.
Results from the instrument verification analysis showed that the strain gauges and pressure cells used in the experiment recorded pavement responses with a high degree of repeatability. In addition, the loading condition variables (speed, wheel load, and tire inflation pressure) affected the response following the expected trends and did not affect the repeatability of the instruments. The average CV of all strain gauge and pressure cell signals was approximately 0.009 or 0.9%, and 0.004 or 0.4%, respectively.
In terms of the rutting comparison, the sections with the 3-inch surface layer outperformed the sections with the thinner 1.5-inch surface layer. However, the age of the pavement at the start of testing significantly affected the rutting performance. After adjusting for the pavement age at the time of testing, the section with the thicker surface showed approximately half of the rutting of the section with the thinner surface.
The results from preliminary ME Design analysis indicate that the software cannot model the studied APT sections using the default material properties and calibration factors available at the time of analysis. In particular, the software does not seem to be prepared to model the CCPR materials. / Master of Science / Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) is a useful method for evaluating pavements, validating instrument responses, and developing pavement models. The APT uses a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) as a loading mechanism to simulate the effects of truck traffic on pavement sections. Strain gauges and pressure cells are installed in the pavement sections to monitor the pavement performance and record key points of strain and pressure. This thesis contains the findings and results of APT testing on two sections of pavement containing a cold central plant recycled (CCPR) base mixture; one section has a 3 inch surface mixture while the other has a 1.5 inch surface mixture. Also, an instrument verification exercise is conducted, and an ME Design model is constructed for comparison with the rutting results of the APT testing.

Contribuição ao estudo da deformação permanente de misturas asfálticas densas à luz de ensaios de fluência por compressão uniaxial estática e dinâmica / Contribution for the rutting study on hot mixture asphalt by means of static and dynamic creep testsNG, Andressa Ka Yan 17 January 2013 (has links)
This paper presents a study of rutting on hot mixture asphalt (HMA) by means of static and dynamic creep tests. A full factorial experiment was developed considering factors related to HMA and to the test conditions. It was produced HMA (unmodified (CAP 50/70) and SBS modified binders) specimens at two different air voids (4 and 7%) and with or without hydrated lime. The specimens were submitted to static and dynamic creep tests at two stress levels, 0,1 MPa e 0,4 MPa, and two temperatures, 40 e 50ºC. These conditions of the experimental program allowed to observe the effects of the modifier SBS, the presence of the lime and the air voids in HMA, and to understand the effects of the temperature, stress and the type of loading on the behavior of each type of asphalt mix. The results indicate that (i) the addition of lime promoted reduction of accumulative deformation only in mixtures with conventional binder (CAP 50/70), (ii) mixtures with 7% air voids showed greater accumulation of permanent deformation regardless of presence of lime, the type of load and temperature of the test, mainly for the conventional HMA, (iii) the Polymer Modified Asphalt Hot Mix Asphalt (PMA-HMA) were less sensitive to temperature and the stress variation (iv) the improvement of the polymer modified asphalt mixture characteristics (PMA-HMA) were detected only on dynamic load conditions.

Efeito da adição de ácidos fosfóricos no comportamento reológico de ligantes asfálticos puros e modificados com copolímero SBS / Effect of phosphoric acid in the rheological behavior of pure and modified asphalt binders with SBS copolymerSobreiro, Fernanda Pilati 27 March 2014 (has links)
The addition of modifiers in asphalt binder to improve its behavior is a common practice nowadays. There are many types of modifiers, among them the most used in the Brazilian federal highways is the SBS copolymer. In addition to polymers, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is another type of modifier that produces good characteristics when added to asphalt binder. Despite the positive effects, it is known that this material is imported, which makes its purchase as well as the final product very expensive. Considering the opportunity to work with a product with the same basic component, but of national origin, which would make it the most affordable modifier, the present study decided to verify the behavior of the addition of phosphoric acid (PA85) to the asphalt binder. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze the effect of the addition of phosphoric acid to the rheological behavior of pure and modified asphalt binders with the SBS copolymer. For both, empirical and rheological tests were conducted in order to verify the behavior of these materials/substances. In the first part of the research, two asphalt binders base CAP50/70 asphalt binder graded PG64-XX (Replan and Lubnor) were modified only with the addition of the two acids (PPA and PA85), while in the second part of these asphalt binders base were modified with SBS copolymer with or without the presence of acids. The tests evaluated penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), LAS modified, and storage stability. In general, the addition of the modifiers enhances the behavior of the asphalt binders, for they improve recovery, are less susceptible to rutting and are more resistant to fatigue. It was found that the type of asphalt binder base directly influences the behavior of materials, regardless of added modifiers. The addition of modifiers was greater in the asphalt binder from the Replan. Compared to acids, it is concluded that the addition of PA85 was satisfactory, since the performance was similar to the PPA acid behavior, but with slightly less significant effect. The addition of acid improved the storage stability of the modified asphalt binders, and it was found that the addition of such modifiers allows reducing the content of the SBS copolymer. Regarding the ability to support traffic, the addition of high levels of these modifiers is not feasible because they show similar support for modified asphalt binders with low and intermediate levels.

Use of Accelerated Loading Equipment for Fatigue Characterization of Hot Mix Asphalt in the LaboratoryBhattacharjee, Sudip 07 January 2005 (has links)
In this dissertation, studies of accelerated pavement testing have been discussed and the relative advantage of using the Model Mobile Load Simulator 3 (MMLS3) has been illustrated. A test protocol of using MMLS3 as a fatigue characterization tool has been proposed and validated by testing several Hot Mix Asphalt slabs. Data acquisition was performed with strain gauges placed in different directions under slabs in controlled environmental condition. Analysis of data showed the effect of wheel load on fatigue behavior of pavement in terms of strain history response, cracking and reduction of modulus. Performance curves showing relation between initial strain and failure loads were developed and were compared with the performance curves obtained from standard method. It has been shown that rutting related excessive permanent strain due to movement of particles under wheel path can affect fatigue performance of Hot Mix Asphalt pavement. Method of estimation of time dependent strain has also been developed to predict observed strain.

Mining activity of kaolin, in Pará, produces around 1.5 million ton/year of processed Kaolin for paper industry, as a consequence, a substantial volume of waste is generated. The use of kaolin waste might reduce the environmental legacy. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate the technical feasibility of kaolin waste as filler in hot mix asphalt, considering aspects related to mix design and engineering properties. For this, twelve asphalt mixtures were produced from the combination of factors: type of asphalt binder (CAP 50/70 e CAP 30/45) and type/content of filler (granite, 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0% of kaolin waste, 1.5% of lime and 3.0% of kaolin waste+1.5% of lime). Asphalt mixtures were evaluated based on results from Marshall design, mechanical (ITS, RM, fatigue and static creep) and durability (thermal and moisture susceptibilities) tests. Additionally, filler-characterization parameters (kaolin content, D10, D30, D60 and fineness modulus, FM) were correlated to the Marshall\'s parameters and to the mechanical and durability properties. Marshall design results indicated that the changes of asphalt binder and types/content of filler did not significantly influence asphalt content (variation from 5.3 to 5.6%), however, stability values of mixtures with CAP 30/45 were higher than the mixtures with CAP 50/70. Mixtures containing 6% of Kaolin presented low stability and high flow, for both asphalt binders. Mixtures without lime did not reach minimum TSR value (70%), which was attributed to the poor adhesion between granite aggregates and asphalt binders. Therefore, regarding Marshall parameters, only asphalt mixtures with lime met all of DOT/Sao Paulo\'s standard requirements. Concerning mechanical tests, it was showed that, in mixtures with CAP 30/45, stiffness, tensile strength and fatigue resistance were higher and the thermal susceptibility was lower when compared to mixtures with CAP 50/70. Kaolin addition increased stiffness and fatigue life, but, decreased tensile strength and rutting resistance. Mechanical properties and thermal susceptibility were quite affected by asphalt binder whereas volumetric and rutting properties and moisture damage were most influenced by filler type and content. Furthermore, kaolin content and FM well correlated with Marshall and rutting parameters, respectively. Finally, it was concluded that the use of kaolin waste as filler in hot mix asphalt is technically feasible, for both tested asphalt binders, at contents up to 3.0% and combined with 1.5% of lime.
