Previous issue date: 2008-08-21 / This study discuss about how the work Griffin & Sabine Trilogy contempletes the gender and the tradicional epistolar romance. The paper will consider some aspects and conceptions about the gender and the epistolar narrative consolidated ond the Nick Bantock s Triology. The resources used by the author are detached to considerer a new and instigated epistolar romance that could sustain the tension existed between the two speechs: literature and plastics arts One becomes, therefore, essential not only the analysis of the relations of the literal and pictorial contents of the postcards and letters of the trilogy (delimited in 2º volume of the trilogy, intitled Sabine´s Notebook: In Which The Extraordinary Correspondence of Griffin & Sabine Continues),but also the study of the double one as a possibility of reading of the trilogy.

Etude physico-chimique et valorisation de composés bioactifs de Parinari macrophylla Sabine (Chrysobalanaceae) / Physicochemical study and valorization of bioactive compounds of Parinari macrophylla Sabine (Chrysobalanaceae)Balde, Mamadou 31 August 2018 (has links)
Type 2 diabetes is often associated with oxidative stress that can lead to several metabolic complications. In Senegal, in addition to drug treatment, medicinal plants are still widely used in the treatment of this pathology. The aim of this work was to contribute to the enhancement of Senegalese biodiversity and more particularly to improve the phytochemical properties of Parinari macrophylla Sabine, traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes. For this, the total antiradical activity and at the molecular level of leaves and bark has been determined by the TEAC, ORAC and HPLC - ABTS-+ online methods. In addition, a phytochemical screening (precipitation reactions, CCM) was carried out and revealed several chemical groups of compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, terpenes, anthracenes, saponosides, cardiotonic heterosides and alkaloids. For the identification of active compounds, NMR and the molecular network approach (UHPLC-MS), identified chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, procyanidin B2 and other procyanidins. The in vitro study carried out on a RINm5F cellular model showed a low anti-radical activity of plant extracts against HX-XO-induced stress. However, the compounds identified in this study are known for their antioxidant and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes responsible for glucose metabolism. This could justify the use of this plant in the treatment of type 2 diabetes by Senegalese traditional therapists.

Coral-based reconstruction of surface salinity at Sabine Bank, VanuatuGorman, Meaghan Kathleen 15 July 2011 (has links)
A monthly resolved coral δ18O record from Sabine Bank, Vanuatu (SBV; 166.04° E, 15.94°S), extending from 2006 to 1929 CE, is used to assess the influence of sea surface salinity (SSS) on the oxygen isotopic composition of coral aragonite at this location. Monthly SSS anomalies at SBV between 2006 and 1970 are strongly correlated with monthly anomalies in sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the central Pacific cold tongue, as recorded by SST anomalies in the Niño 3.4 grid box (i.e., canonical record of ENSO variability, r = 0.68, p < 0.01; lag of 6 months). This relationship demonstrates that SSS in the waters offshore of Vanuatu respond to ENSO-driven changes in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system in the tropical Pacific. SBV coral δ18O is also strongly correlated with monthly instrumental SSS anomalies at Vanuatu (r = 0.71, p < 0.01), therefore SBV coral δ18O variations are driven by the ENSO-related changes in surface ocean conditions. A calibration-verification exercise using SBV coral δ18O values and instrumental SSS was performed over the period 2006-1970 CE. A statistically robust transfer function was determined and used to predict SSS at SBV back to 1929 CE. The coral δ18O and SSS relationship at Vanuatu is further evaluated via comparison with a coral δ18O record from Malo Channel, Vanuatu, a site that is 130 km to the east of SBV. The strong correlation between the two coral δ18O records (r = 0.70; p < 0.01) suggests that ENSO drives regional changes in SSS in this region and that such changes can be reconstructed using variations in skeletal δ18O of corals. / text

De Lingua Sabina : a reappraisal of the Sabine glossesBurman, Annie Cecilia January 2018 (has links)
This thesis offers a reappraisal of the Sabine glosses through the analysis of thirty-nine words, all glossed explicitly as Sabine in ancient sources ranging from the first century BCE to the sixth century CE. The study of the Sabine glosses found in ancient grammarians and antiquarians goes back to the beginnings of Italic scholarship. Over time, two positions on the Sabine glosses have crystallised: (a) the Sabine glosses are evidence of a personal obsession of the Republican author Varro, in whose work many Sabine glosses survive, and (b) the Sabine glosses are true remnants of a single language of which little or no epigraphic evidence has survived. By using the neogrammarian observation that sound-change is regular and exceptionless, it is possible to ascertain whether or not the Sabine glosses are likely to be from the same language. This thesis finds that the sound-changes undergone by the Sabine glosses show no broad agreement. The developments are characteristic of different languages – Latin, Faliscan and various Sabellic languages – and many changes are mutually exclusive. This consequently throws doubt on the assertion that the Sabine glosses are all taken from one language. Instead, the glosses should be seen as part of a discourse of the relationships between Romans, Sabines and Sabellic-speaking peoples. During the Republic, Sabines were central to Roman myth, historiography and political rhetoric. As the Sabines were a distinct people in the Roman foundation myths, but were largely Romanised in the Republican present, they became a convenient bridge between Rome and the Sabellic-speaking peoples of Central and Southern Italy, to whom Greek and Roman writers ascribed myths tracing origin back to the Sabines. This continued into the Empire, when emperors such as Claudius and Vespasian utilised their (supposed) Sabine heritage to gain ideological capital. In light of this, the phenomenon of Sabine glosses cannot be seen as one man’s interest, but as a means of reflecting on Rome’s relations with Sabellic-speaking Italy.

The rape of the Sabine women : Ovid Ars Amatoria, Book I: 101-134Dutton, Jacqueline 27 February 2012 (has links)
M.A. / In this dissertation I aim to establish how Ovid uses the Rape of the Sabine Women, part of the foundation myth of Rome, in the Ars Amatoria I: 101-134 to maintain or restructure male-female relationships within Roman patriarchal society. Furthermore, Ovid's legacy in the Middle Ages and our modem society is briefly looked at. This myth tells that Romulus and his men had a shortage of women in their city as they were not considered suitable husbands by the men of the surrounding tribes. In response to the ridicule of their neighbours, Romulus held a celebration of the Consualia at which he and his men seized the Sabine maidens, who would later become their wives. A semiotic approach is used to understand how Ovid viewed existing male-female relationships and to what end he would like to restructure them. Ovid understood the strength of this myth and retold it in order to persuade his audience of his argument. In these lines Ovid explained to the student-lover how and why to meet a woman at the Theatre. Through the comparison of the ancient and the contemporary, his use of certain words and figures of speech, Ovid attempted to convince his audience of the effectiveness of the art of love he promoted: a contract of agreement between two willing partners created by persuasion rather than force. He displayed an amazing understanding of the human psyche, as well as the violent, angry nature of rape. Ovid's novel approach has affected authors of the Middle Ages, among them Geoffrey Chaucer, artists of the 'heroic rape' genre and can even be discussed in relation to modem rape myths and the modern concept of equity between the sexes introduced in the Ars already. His style and subject matter has caused the analysis of his work to be highly debated among many modem scholars. It is my conclusion that Ovid wrote the Ars Amatoria with the intention of restructuring male-female relationships in Roman society, promoting a movement away from violence and unfulfilling relationships, typical of the Roman marriage tradition. His work was so far reaching that he did not only create a stir among his contemporaries, but instead he influenced the development of the male-female relationship and interaction over centuries.

Exploring Novel, Hard, Acoustically Absorbent, MaterialsRehfuss, Randall Jay 24 April 2018 (has links)
At the turn of the 20th century two contemporaries in their respective fields teamed up to develop a solution to an acoustic problem with the hard-surfaced vaulted ceilings being installed in many large spanning rooms being built at the time. In the spirit of their ingenuity, this research explores a 21st century solution to a similar problem in contemporary buildings; the desire for a durable, hard surface wall or ceiling material treatment that is more sound absorbent than other common surface treatments. To find a material answer to this desire an impedance tube was used to analyze the mid-frequency octave band absorption coefficients of various re-purposed existing materials and tiles created utilizing 3D print technology and Helmholtz resonators. Additionally, an empirical study of Helmholtz resonator geometry was performed by analyzing the sound absorption of resonant cavity shape changes. Finally, plots of the absorption coefficients for each material tested were created to provide a visual comparison against two common surface treatment materials, tectum and gypsum wall board. / Master of Architecture

bala.
As
Chewable candy is a product obtained from the cooking sugar which is
characterized by being chewy (gummy) and relatively slow dissolution in the mouth
and whose color, taste, flavor or texture and are due to the chemical additives. The
inclusion of fruits in formulating chewable candy can eliminate or reduce the use of
these additives, as well as incorporating fruit compounds associated with health
benefits. This study aimed to develop conventional chewable candies and reduced
calorie using pulps araçás and cherry, assessing their physicochemical properties,
phytochemical, microbiological and featuring pleasant sensory characteristics, as
well as storage stability. With respect to composition proximate this study showed
that candies were modified during the storage occurring the phenomenon of "mela".
The physicochemical parameters evaluated demonstrated to be suitable for this type
of product. The processing and storage for 180 days influenced the phytochemical
composition and antioxidant candies where there was a greater content in
conventional formulations due to the higher percentage of pulp (7.2 %) in this candy.
The reduced caloric value candies had a lower lipid content than the conventional
ones and they can be categorized as light candies in lipids. The candies developed in
this study showed no contamination by fecal coliforms and Salmonella sp. The
sensory evaluation with children (usual consumers of this type of product) from 5 to
10 years, we obtained higher acceptance rate to 70 % indicating that candies
products have good potential for consumption.
