Twitter: Students' Perceptions of Tweet Credibility

Black, Caroline Kemp 03 October 2013 (has links)
Anyone can upload news instantaneously to Twitter in 140-characters or less, therefore it is important to assess the credibility of tweets, particularly during a foodborne illness outbreak. According to a Microsoft study there are numerous Twitter features that impact the credibility of tweets. This study examines students’ use of Twitter, and their perceptions of how features and sources impact the credibility of tweets related to a foodborne illness. An online survey was completed by Texas A&M University students classified as U3 juniors (N = 200) in social science-based majors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The study revealed students to be moderate users of Twitter. Eight features were identified to impact credibility: verified author topic expertise, account has verification seal, tweet contains grammar/punctuation mistakes, author is someone you’ve heard of, author is often mentioned/retweeted, author often tweets on topic, and author has many followers. Three Twitter identities a professor, student, and student organization, were created to measure tweet credibility. Tweets from the professor were perceived more credible than tweets attributed to student or student organization. The results indicated statistical differences between features attributed to each source. These findings can help sources determine what features can make tweets the most credible. This study has important implications for organizations that engage consumers on Twitter when breaking news such as a foodborne illness outbreak occurs.

Economic Effects on Radiopharmacy Systems| The Impact of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Proposed Radiation Exposure Limits

Wentling II, William A., II 18 September 2014 (has links)

In the spring of 2012, based on recommendations from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposed three amendments to reduce current radiation exposure limits for radiation workers. The NRC proposals have caused some concern within the radiopharmaceutical industry. The regulatory changes may affect the ability of radiopharmacy workers to remain on the job, thereby inflicting additional costs to radiopharmacies if they are required to replace workers who have reached their yearly exposure limits.

This research sought to determine whether or not the new regulatory proposals will in fact have a financial impact on the radiopharmaceutical industry. This research was a retrospective case study that analyzed four radiopharmaceutical production facilities and their employee radiation exposure reports. Results of the study suggest that the NRC's proposed amendments to reduce radiation levels will not have a great adverse effect, either financially or from an employee exposure standpoint, on the current radiopharmacy system. The research demonstrated that existing as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) standards have resulted in radiopharmacy workers receiving exposures well below the current limits, and within the NRC proposed limits. Of 77 employees studied over a 10 year period, only seven employees (9 %) would have been removed from the production process for overexposure to any one of the NRC's proposed limits. However, this research reviewed small a subset of four radiopharmacies and did not examine other industries and professions utilizing ionizing radiation.

An exploratory study of GIS based analysis of health and safety related information

Manase, David January 2008 (has links)
Statistics from the Health and Safety Executive show that the UK construction industry has approximately 80 fatalities per year, making the construction industry one of the most dangerous industries when compared to other industries. The reduction of construction accidents in the construction industry has led to the need for thoroughly analysed construction environment information which can be effectively utilised in formulating construction health and safety planning strategies, thus enabling the construction industry meet accident reduction targets. However, existing approaches to information analysis mainly focus on factors within construction health and safety information during analysis and do not shed light on the influencing socio-economic and spatially influenced issues within which the industry’s accident contributory factors are rooted. It is also clear that limitations of information usage in the construction industry are due to the fragmented nature in which health and safety information is availed to practitioners for ultimate utilisation in the construction process. There is, therefore, a need for more appropriate decision-support mechanisms that can take account of spatial contributory factors to accident occurrence. There is also a need for mechanisms that enhance the management, analysis and utilisation construction environment information from varied sources for integration in the construction process. The failure to utilise information from varied sources in the construction industry, means that adequately analysed information is lacking for integration in construction health and safety planning strategy formulation process. This study was initiated as a response to this challenge. This prompted further research into the utilisation of health and safety information and its integration in the construction process. A survey involving 215 construction stakeholders was conducted to establish the limitation and requirements of health and safety in the construction industry. Results derived through qualitative analysis further emphasised the need for enhanced health and safety information analysis and integration for use in decision making. The research explored how the spatial element present in all in construction environment information could be utilised to account for accident contributory factors. This led to the exploration Geographical Information System (GIS), a mechanism that takes into account spatial aspects of bodies of information of the phenomenon being explored, for its potential capabilities in management and analysis of construction environment information. The implementation of the GIS-based system known as Geographical Information System for Accident Prevention (GISAP) is then presented. The evaluation of the system by prospective end-users reveals the limitations and benefits of the system implementation and recommendations made for further research. In conclusion, it was clear from this study that this approach has the potential to provide a quick referencing GIS success that can link, organise, analyse and display accident data and other construction and non construction environment data. This can assist stakeholders in decision making during formulation of construction health and safety strategies. The approach can improve understanding of analyses and can enhance the handling of queries related to accident data and other data. This innovative approach can also offer an extra dimension of safety information management, identify trends and areas for effective accident preventive action and ultimately enable development and directions of future work and to engender wider debate.

Comparative Qualitative Research Distinguishing Safety Features Among Aviation Safety Action Programs in the United States Airlines

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Over the years, aviation safety has been influenced by continuous implementations of both proactive and reactive policies by both regulatory boards and also, aviation service providers. This achievement has been possible mainly because of the safety management tools like the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) which derives its roots from the much earlier Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS). Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides guidelines and procedures for installation and development of an ASAP, for every airline in the United States. In this study, how different United States air carriers apply ASAP in their organizations is investigated. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Technology 2016

From embracing to managing risks

Keen, J., Nicklin, E., Wickramasekera, N., Long., A., Randell, Rebecca, Ginn, C., McGinnis, E., Willis, S., Whittle, J. 04 March 2020 (has links)
Yes / To assess developments over time in the capture, curation and use of quality and safety information in managing hospital services. Setting: Four acute National Health Service hospitals in England. Participants: 111.5 hours of observation of hospital board and directorate meetings, and 72 hours of ward observations. 86 interviews with board level and middle managers and with ward managers and staff. Results: There were substantial improvements in the quantity and quality of data produced for boards and middle managers between 2013 and 2016, starting from a low base. All four hospitals deployed data warehouses, repositories where datasets from otherwise disparate departmental systems could be managed. Three of them deployed real-time ward management systems, which were used extensively by nurses and other staff. Conclusions: The findings, particularly relating to the deployment of real-time ward management systems, are a corrective to the many negative accounts of information technology implementations. The hospital information infrastructures were elements in a wider move, away from a reliance on individual professionals exercising judgements and towards team-based and data-driven approaches to the active management of risks. They were not, though, using their fine-grained data to develop ultrasafe working practices. / NIHR Health Service and Delivery Research (HS&DR) programme, project 13/07/68.

With the creation of the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) and after major events such as the World Cup and the Olympics, and the CICC was perpetuated as a "legacy" for the community of Rio Grande do Sul, the question arose: what are the facilitating factors and the barriers to information sharing and integration among public agencies involved in the Rio Grande do Sul Integrated Public Security Command and Control Center (CICC)? Using the qualitative method, in a case study, the survey involved key informants as managers of institutions involved in CICC and IT managers for data collection. The research analyzed the answers of the interviewees by theoretical categories indicated by the literature. The CICCR (Integrated Command and Control Center), in the case of Rio Grande do Sul called the Command and Control Integrated Command Department, is the coordinating element of the Regional Security Operation, which aims to ensure the flow of information of interest national level for the CICCN (Integrated Command and National Control Center) and operational interest for ancillary structures. Analyzing the interviews and an observed critical event, three theoretical perspectives were considered. In political terms, there was the collaboration of the parties and political will. Regarding the managerial and organizational perspective, it is important to highlight the difficulties in planning and calculating the costs of the operation. In the technological perspective, the adequate planning of the technology to be used during operations and its constant updating is important. There are factors that can be both facilitators and barriers depending on how they are worked. In the same way, although technology plays an important role, the political and managerial perspective overlaps.
