Contribution à l’étude du comportement des pieux sous chargements cycliques axiaux / Contribution to the study of the behavior of piles under cyclic axial loading

Benzaria, Omar 14 December 2012 (has links)
As part of the French National research project SOLCYP, the purpose of this work was study the behavior of the piles under axial loadings for the phases before, during and after cycles. To achieve this objective, an extensive series of static and cyclic axial pile load tests have been carried out in two experimental sites of the North of France: the overconsolidated Flandrian clays (Merville experimental site) and in dense Flandrian sands (Loon-Plage experimental site). Tests were performed on driven closed-ended pipe piles, bored piles and screwed. All piles were instrumented with retrievable extensometers for measuring the load distribution along the pile wall.Cyclic load tests were composed of series of cycles of constant load amplitude. A large range of load histories were applied including series of small amplitude cycles and great number of cycles (N > 5000) and series of large amplitude cycles leading to cyclic failure after a small number of cycles..A large volume of data has been interpreted to describe the effects of axial cyclic loads on the behavior of the piles. The interpretation of these tests included, on the one hand, a global analysis focusing on (i) the potential reduction on the ultimate axial capacity; (ii) the number of load cycles of a given load that the pile can sustain before cyclic failure and (iii) the evolution of displacements of the pile head during cyclic loading (pile stiffness). In addition, it integrated a local study in particular on shaft friction degradation along the pile wall and evolution of the resistance of point of the pile. This thesis, based on the experimental study, allowed the formulation of the practical conclusions on the behavior of the piles under axial cyclic loadings and proposed prospects for determining these problems well

Vliv vegetace a sukcesního stáří na vývoj půd v pískovnách / The influence of vegetation and succession age on pedogenesis in sand pits.

Svačinová, Ilona January 2013 (has links)
Sand Pits have great potential to restore via spontaneous succession. There are not many studies of the development of soils in sand pits; therefore, this work focuses on the development of soil properties in sand pits comparing technically reclaimed sites and sites with primary succession. 120 samples were collected at fourteen sand pits in South Bohemia and selected soil properties were assessed. The surveyed plot were grouped according to age, and the successional and technically reclaimed sites were distinguished. The results were evaluated by analysis of variation and regression analysis. The differences in soil bulk density, pH, thickness of soil organic horizon, Cox, N and C/N ratio between reclaimed and spontaneously restored sites of different age were analysed. The bulk density and pH decrease significantly on successional sites; however, the reclaimed sites do not show signifiant differences. Organic horizon thickness increases with age on both types of sites.Cox, N and C/N ratio do not show significant influence age. Lower values of Cox, N and C/N were measured in initial stages of succession. On the reclaimed sites there is almost no change in values of Cox, N and C/N ratio, because of the occurrence of nutrient-richer substráte used during technical reclamation. Keywords: soil...

Environmental Performance of Copper Slag and Barshot as Abrasives

Potana, Sandhya Naidu 20 May 2005 (has links)
The basic objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental performance of two abrasives Copper Slag and Barshot in terms of productivity (in terms of area cleaned- ft2/hr), consumption and or used-abrasive generation rate (of the abrasive- ton/2000ft2; lb/ft2) and particulate emissions (mg/ft2; mg/lb; lb/lb; lb/kg; lb/ton). This would help in evaluating the clean technologies for dry abrasive blasting and would help shipyards to optimize the productivity and minimize the emissions by choosing the best combinations reported in this study to their conditions appropriately. This project is a joint effort between the Gulf Coast Region Maritime technology Center (GCRMTC) and USEPA. It was undertaken to simulate actual blasting operations conducted at shipyards under enclosed, un-controlled conditions on plates similar to steel plates commonly blasted at shipyards.

One-Dimensional Dynamic Modeling of the Lower Mississippi River

Gurung, Tshering T 16 May 2014 (has links)
The Mississippi River (MR) has been engineered with the development of the levee system, dams for flood control measures, jetties, revetments and dredging of the navigation channel. These alterations have reduced the replenishment of the sediment to the Louisiana Coastal area. To aid in the restoration planning, 1-D numerical models have been calibrated and validated to predict the river response to various changes such as channel modifications, varied flow conditions and hurricane situations. This study utilized the HEC-RAS 4.1 and the CHARIMA (Dr. Forrest Holly, University of Iowa). The models were calibrated for hydrodynamics and sediment using Tarbert Landing discharges (HEC-RAS), Belle Chasse sand concentrations (CHARIMA), and Gulf of Mexico (GOM) stages. The models showed that a large percentage of the river flow is lost over the East Bank downstream of Bohemia which reduces the sand transport capacity of the river. This reach is subject to flow reversals during hurricanes.

Modélisation du comportement des sables sous la condition de cisaillement simple et applications au calcul des pieux / Mechanical modelling of sand considering simple shear condition and its application to pile foundation

Wu, Zexiang 13 December 2017 (has links)
The thesis aims to study the mechanical behaviour of sand under simple shear condition and to apply the results to the numerical simulation of pile foundation. First, a recently developed critical state sand model (SIMSAND) is introduced with a straight forward procedure of parameters determination, implemented into a finite element code and then subjected to a series of validations. Then, the model is enhanced by considering the inherent anisotropy during the principal stress rotation under the simple shear condition and validated by using results of both triaxial tests and simple shear tests on Fontainebleau sand. Simple shear tests are analysed by simulating in three-dimensions the real conditions imposed by the simple shear apparatus. The inhomogeneity of the samples with the effect of sample size is also investigated. Furthermore, undrained and drained cyclic simple shear tests on Fontainebleau sand are conducted to investigate the cyclic responses, such as the effective normal stress degradation and the volumetric strain accumulation, respectively, considering some impact factors such as the initial void ratio, the normal stress, the cyclic shear stress ratio and the average shear stress ratio. Based on these results, two analytical models are proposed to predict the long-term degradation of the effective normal stress and the accumulation of the volumetric strain with the number of cycles. Moreover, the cyclic simple shear tests are simulated by the enhanced SIMSAND model by incorporating the stress reversal technique. Finally, a series of model pile tests under monotonic and cyclic loadings are simulated based on which the cone resistance of the piles is evaluated as well as the response of the soil surrounding the pile.

Influência da dimensão e da sucção matricial no comportamento de fundações superficiais assentes em solo arenoso não-saturado / Size and matric influence in the behavior of shallow foundations in unsaturated sandy soils

Vianna, Ana Paula Fontana 08 June 2005 (has links)
Para pequenas dimensões da sapata, os valores de capacidade de carga e recalque aumentam / The influence of matric suction and size of footings in the bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations in unsaturated sandy soils are analyzed. Fourteen plate load tests were performed in the first part of the research. Rigid metallic plates with diameters 0,20, 0,40, 0,80 m and one concrete circular footing with 1,50 m were used in the tests. All plates and footing were positioned at 1,50 m depth. The tests were performed in the foundation experimental field of USP/São Carlos. Due to the soil collapsible character, the tests were performed with the monitoring of matric suction pressure through tensiometers installed in the bottom of the holes. Centrifuge tests were carried out at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the second part of the research. Metallic plates with 30 mm, 50 mm and 10 mm were used and the gravity levels were 1 g, 5 g, 10 g, 15 g, 25 g, 50 g e 100 g. The plates were positioned on top of a sandy soil with three moisture conditions: dry, flooded and non-flooded. Thus, the capacity will be analyzed taking into consideration both the geometry of the tested plates and the influence of the matric suction pressure. The footing size influence in the settlement was also analyzed. A substantial increase of the plate-soil system bearing capacity and a considerable decrease in the settlements, caused by matric suction increase, was confirmed. It was also demonstrated that the bearing capacity and settlements variations are not a linearly increasing function of the size as theoretical methods suggest. For small footings, the bearing capacity and settlement increase as the footing size decreases

Avaliação sanitária das águas e areias de praias da Baixada Santista, São Paulo / Sanitary assessment of waters and sand of beaches at Baixada Santista, São Paulo

Pinto, Karla Cristiane 27 September 2010 (has links)
São Paulo State seashore comprises 16 cities including Cubatão, where each one shows their own particularities. In the São Paulo State seashore is mostly observed fecal pollution due to launching sewage into these waters which transport pathogens with potential to cause diseases. The objective of this study is to assess the sanitary quality of recreational waters and wet and dry sand from three beaches located at Baixada Santista such as Gonzaguinha (São Vicente), Boqueirão (Santos) and Pitangueiras (Guarujá). The samples (water, wet and dry sand) were collected with monthly frequency throughout a year and the following parameters were analyzed: thermotolerant coliforms, Escherichia coli, enterococos, Staphylococcus coagulase +, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and dermatophytes. The bacteriological and C. albicans analyzes were performed according to CETESB and Standard Methods 21st edition. Dermatophyte analysis from water samples were carried out by membrane filtering technique and by spread plate technique and hair-baiting technique for sand samples. The results revealed that 95 per cent of the water samples were positive for fecal indicators following by P. aeruginosa (75 per cent). C. albicans was detected only in water samples showing 6.7 per cent of the observed frequency. Microsporum sp specie was detected only in sand samples in all beaches studied. In general, high microorganisms concentrations was found in dry sand samples regardless raining events, following by wet sand and the lowest concentrations were found in water samples. It was possible to conclude that fecal indicators microorganisms and pathogens concentrations were high in all samples analyzed and it highlights to necessity to address efforts to improve the quality of the water and sand because this poor quality condition found poses a significant public health concern

Avaliação do reaproveitamento de areia de fundição residual em camadas de pavimentos / Evaluation of the waste foundry sand reuse in pavement structural layers

Gutiérrez Klinsky, Luis Miguel 27 March 2013 (has links)
The Brazilian industry grew up considerably last decade, increasing the needing of machinery and metal production. As a result, the metal casting production raised and also the amount of the residues. The most common foundry system uses natural sand mixed with organic and inorganic binders, to produce the cores of the metal products. After a certain number of foundry cycles, the sand losses its properties and remain as the main residue of the foundry industry. Thereby, the waste foundry sand (WFS) must be discarded in licensed landfills at high costs. Hence, researchers and engineers have researched for alternative solutions to reuse this residue in civil construction activities. Pavement construction uses high volumes of natural resources, thus, provides an opportunity to reuse significant amounts of WFS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of use the waste foundry sand as construction material of pavement bases and sub-bases courses with low volume traffic. The waste foundry sand used here was collected close to the city of Piracicaba/SP, region which has a high concentration of foundry industries. The residue was used to compose soil-sand, soil-sand-lime and sand-asphalt mixtures. Tests commonly used in pavement research were used to evaluate the mixtures containing waste foundry sand and determine their potential as road construction material. The results showed that mixtures of soil-sand and soil-sand-lime containing 20% to 60% of WFS could be used as pavement bases and sub-bases courses. On the other hand, sand-asphalt-hot-mix could consume higher volumes of the residue and also could be used as bases courses. The waste foundry sand and some mixtures were also analyzed through environmental tests. The results showed that the WFS has suitable characteristics to be reused in alternative activities. However, some metals were detected in the mixtures at higher concentrations than the allowed by specifications. Therefore, it is concluded that the waste foundry sand has characteristics that encourage its reuse in low volume traffic pavements, but, it is recommended the construction of experimental pavement sections using WFS to assess the environmental impact of the residue in long term periods.

Influência do co-substrato na remoção de sabão em pó de uso doméstico e na diversidade microbiana de reator anaeróbio de leito fluidificado / Verification of influence of co-substrate in household detergent removal and microbial diversity in anaerobic fluidized bed biofilm reactor

Ferreira, Filipe Vasconcelos 25 May 2012 (has links)
Linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), main component in detergent formulation and others clean products, is constantly released in aquatic environment in face of precarious domestic wastewater treatment facilities presents in developing countries like Brazil. The main reason of this study was to verify the powder soap removal through the use of different co-substrates in anaerobic fluidized bed biological reactor (AFBBR). The AFBBR was filled with sand as support material and operated with 15 hours of hydraulic time retention (HTR) over 247 days. It was utilized synthetic sewage which composition included salt solution, sodium bicarbonate, commercial powder soap, yeast extract and co-substrate as sucrose and/or ethanol. The operation of reactor was divided in following steps: (1) biomass immobilization phase in close circuit; (2) stage I with sucrose and ethanol (50/50%) without powder soap addition in open circuit; (3) stage II with sucrose and ethanol (50/50%) and 6,8 ± 2,1 mg/L of LAS in open circuit; (4) stage III with sucrose and ethanol (50/50%) and 14,3 ± 1,5 mg/L of LAS in open circuit; and (5) stage IV with only sucrose as co-substrate and 16,4 ± 2,5 mg/L of LAS in open circuit. For all stages, it was obtained up 78 ± 8,4% average COD removal with 590,2 ± 76,2 mg/L influent. There was a increase of COD removal around 12% with powder soap addition among stage I and following stages, these last ones, together, had 597,7 ± 83,1 mg/L of average COD influent. The LAS removal was 37,7 ± 13,7% with 12,4 ± 8,4 mg/L of LAS influent. Using statistic analysis, it is not possible to define the level of co-substrates importance in COD and LAS removal. Through mass balance, it was verified 39,4% of LAS removal, with 30,6% from biological degradation and 8,8% from adsorption. Diverse microbial populations were observed from different stages by DGGE analysis. It was identified microorganisms relating to Proteobacteria (72%), Acidobacteria (3%), Synergistetes (3%), Bacteroidetes (6,3%) and Firmicutes (6,3%) phila in biomass support material from last stage. Most of sequences were closed to Rhodocyclaceae family which members are capable to degrade aromatic compounds.

Dinâmica de ondas de areia na Baía de São Marcos (Ponta da Madeira/MA): observações e modelagem numérica / Sand waves dynamics in São Marcos Bay (Ponta da Madeira / MA): observations and numerical modeling

Chagas, Felipe Murai 18 December 2013 (has links)
Este modelo forneceu conhecimento basal para o planejamento de atividades de uso, exploração e conservação dos sedimentos na Baía de São Marcos / The aim of this study was to characterize sand wave dynamics in São Marcos Bay (Maranhão state). Using data obtained from consecutive bathymetry campaigns, bottom sediment distribution, tide level and stationary current meters time series at this site from 2011-2012 years, bed morphology evolution was determined and a process-based hydrodynamic model was validated. Registering consecutive sand wave positioning in longitudinal transects provided bed features migration, generating transport pathways that agreed with model results. Sand waves observed were up to 6 m high and 342 m long and migrate up to 1.8 m/day, under depth-averaged current conditions up to 1.84 m/s above the sand wave field and 2.58 m/s in the adjacent channels. Cabeço do Mearim and Medo Island represents the features responsible for separate both tidal hydrodynamic regimes that control bottom migration and morphologic patterns. Residual current distribution and tide dominance coefficients showed that the controlling hydrodynamic forces of the system are more intense in the main channels and southward Medo Island, while weaken as depth reduces eastward. The methods used in this study provide a reliable conceptual model of transport pathways that control the local dynamic equilibrium, composed by the main channel of Sao Marcos Bay, where ebb dominance occurs, by the Boqueirão Channel strongly dominated by flood currents and by the transversal channel located eastward the bottom features, also flood dominated and responsible for transport sediment and energy to the sand wave field. This approach provided the bases for planning activities regard use, conservation and exploitation of sediments in São Marcos Bay
