The role of the Maritime Industry Training Board in co-ordinating maritime education and training and development in South Africa

05 September 2012 (has links)
M.Comm. / Any macro transport economic study of maritime education, training and development (ETD) will need to identify the many and varied role players involved therein or affected thereby. An introduction to the complexity, demands, needs and problems, and dynamic nature of the maritime industry, and of ETD in South Africa, is also necessary. Attention in the industry to safety and the resultant international requirements, in particular, makes adequate and coordinated maritime ETD and cognisance of the developments in this arena, essential. The regulatory and institutional framework within which ETD and the maritime industry function must be investigated. The Maritime Industry Training Board (MITB) is the current coordinator of maritime ETD in South Africa. As such, the effectiveness and efficiency of its activities need to be assessed, on an ongoing basis, by the role players which it serves to ensure that its co-ordinating functions facilitate the fulfilment of their needs and problems. The core problem investigated in this study, is the lack of co-ordinated maritime ETD, specifically in South Africa. The aim of the study, therefore, is to explore the subject of maritime ETD.

Alabbadi, Shadi 16 January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between Organizational Behavior (OB), IT-business strategic alignment (ITBSA), and Firm Performance (FP) within the context of the Jordanian maritime industry. Through a survey conducted among companies in the industry, data were collected to assess the constructs of OB, ITBSA, and FP. The analysis of the data revealed significant findings supporting the positive impact of OB on FP, suggesting that effective organizational behavior practices contribute to improved firm performance. Furthermore, the study found that OB positively influences ITBSA, indicating that a strong organizational behavior framework promotes the alignment between IT and business strategies. Additionally, the results demonstrate that ITBSA directly affects FP, emphasizing the importance of strategic alignment in driving favorable performance outcomes. The study also identified that ITBSA acts as a mediator between OB and FP, underscoring its role in facilitating the relationship between organizational behavior and firm performance. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of the Jordanian maritime industry and emphasize the significance of fostering a conducive organizational behavior environment and aligning IT with business strategies. The implications of these findings for both theory and practice are discussed, along with suggestions for future research directions to further enhance our understanding of the relationships between OB, ITBSA, and FP in the maritime industry context.

A Heuristic Approach To Designing A Unique Ships Grid With Energy Storage for the Future Fleet of River Tender Ships

Swanberg, Boone Thomas 25 July 2018 (has links)
This work discusses the implementation of a Unique Ships Grid design that utilizes Energy Storage. This Unique Ships Grid is used to enhance the efficiency of a Construction Single-Hull River Tender previously discussed and assessed by the Army Corps of Engineers and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This Grid Design is shown to be both in compliance with applicable regulations and reliable due to built-in redundancy. Compliance with regulations and redundancy are both prized by the Maritime Community and the USCG. An applicable Heuristic Design Methodology is provided in conjunction with the Unique Ships Grid. This Design Methodology can be used with a simple load analysis and results in a Load Center breakdown and the sizing of Cables, Generators, Inverter, and required Energy Storage. This design process is shown to provide an inherent margin for growth and safety. This design process is quick and results in values necessary to do a cost analysis, environmental impact survey, and stability analysis (Ship Stability not Electrical Stability). / Master of Science

Grundstötningsolyckor på svenskt farvatten och bland svenskflaggade fartyg / Grounding accidents on Swedish waters and among Swedish flagged ships

Lindqvist, Michael, Andersson, Simon January 2019 (has links)
Even though there are plenty of technological aids onboard modern-day merchant vessels, intended to help the Officer on watch to drive his vessel safely, groundings continue to happen. This literature study summarises and reviews data from several groundings that involved Swedish-registered ships and ships within Swedish territory during the period 2011-2016. This study covers questions about the main factors that have caused the groundings. It covers both internal and external factors. Method of steering, bridge manning and type of chart belong to the internal factors. Factors such as wave height, wind force, type of waters, visibility and light conditons are part of the external factors. This data is then discussed and analysed to give a picture of what may have caused the groundings. The results show that the smaller tonnage passenger and bulk carriers account for the majority of the accidents. Like previous studies the number of accidents due to human factors are high.

Segurança na cadeia de suprimentos internacional : protocolo de gestão de risco para o transporte marítimo de cargas less than container load

Bonatto, Heitor January 2016 (has links)
The management of threats and risks in the company has been dedicated to study these problems by market bias in order to make them better prepared to face these challenges. In this regard a number of analytical tools diagnosed threats and risks as part of the business relations. Among the many relationships that a company established to achieve their goals, we highlight those that are embedded in a system called the supply chain, which as a result of the globalization process has become internationalized. Companies to extend their supply chains "across borders", are subject to the influences of economic, geopolitical, social and historical environment. In these environments, the year 2001 led to a series of risk management studies that have identified the external or exogenous threats, those outside the market bias, the possibility of making the chain of uncertain international supplies. Such threats are configured shares of nature and actions taken by humans, by means of criminal acts as terrorism, trafficking, smuggling and maritime piracy In addition to companies, countries have created international regimes that sought to protect supply chains, especially in its transport system, highlighting the called maritime, because of their heavy use to transport cargo. The thesis aims to propose a risk management protocol for the shipping cargo "less than container load" to make the international supply chain more secure. The methodology used was based on descriptive type and documentary because described the operational process and analized documents used in the management of shipping “less than container load”, In conclusion, the multimodal transport operator who is responsible for operating a means of transporting cargo , which makes the supply chain insecure supplies, has conditions , and especially the obligation to join the other actors , in favor of the increase system security.

Lang, Marta January 2011 (has links)
The overall aim of the study was to examine work environment factors within the maritime industry. For this purpose a new measurement tool for work environment on board ships was developed. Further aims of the study were the examination of organizational culture, occupational stress and job satisfaction. 215 seafarers from 24 ships participated in the study. The response rate was at 35% for the whole sample. In order to investigate differences in organizational culture, a multivariate analysis was conducted, which revealed significant differences in organizational culture due to nationality and hierarchical position. In order to examine predictors of job satisfaction, multiple hierarchical block regression analysis were performed. Occupational stress and organizational culture emerged as significant predictors of job satisfaction. Especially relationships with co-workers and relationships with superiors emerged as predictive for job satisfaction. Social support and feedback from superiors showed the strongest predictive power for job satisfaction. The results in the study emphasize the importance of nationality and hierarchical position as important variables for measuring organizational culture. In addition, the importance of social relationships between co-workers and superiors are discussed. The aim of the study was to examine whether there were significant differences in organizational culture on board ships when looking at the variables nationality, hierarchical position and ship type. 215 Norwegian and Filipino seafarers from 24 ships participated in the study. The response rate was at 35% for the whole sample. Multivariate analysis revealed overall significant differences for the seven culture dimensions. In addition a significant difference of nation on the two factors (2) Working with the opposite gender and (3) Social support and feedback given by superiors emerged. Further multivariate analyses showed resulted in overall significant differences between hierarchical positions on organizational culture and especially on the factor (3) Emotional involvement in co-workers problems. The results emphasize the importance of including variables as nationality and hierarchical position when studying organizational culture within the maritime industry. The aim of the study was to examine the dimensions stress and organizational culture as predictors of job satisfaction within the specific conditions of the occupation of seafarers. In addition the impact of Social support and feedback given by superiors on job satisfaction was examined. 215 Norwegian and Filipino seafarers with different ranks from 24 different ships participated in this study. 97 of the respondents reported to be Officers/Managers and 87 of the respondents Ratings/Subordinates. The response rate was 35, 5 % for the entire sample. Multiple hierarchical block regression analysis were performed and revealed both stress and organizational culture as significant predictors of overall job satisfaction. Especially relationships with co-workers and relationships with superiors emerged as predictive for job satisfaction as a part of organizational culture. As predicted the factor Social support and feedback given by superiors had great predictive power for job satisfaction. The results emphasize the importance of organizational culture and especially relationships between the employees on board a ship.
