Greywater treatment for reuse by slow sand filtration : study of pathogenic microorganisms and phage survival

Khalaphallah, Rafat 14 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In recent decades, most countries of the world have experienced a shortage of water and increase its rate of consumption. Today, every country in the world are interested in this problem by trying to find alternatives to address this shortage. One solution is reuse greywater (GW) for irrigation after treatment. GW is all water generated from Household except toilet water. The risks associated with the reuse of these waters are the presence of pathogens that can infect humans, animals and plants. In this thesis focused on studying treatment by slow sand filtration and the survival of representatives of pathogens, such as E. Coli, P. aeruginosa , E. Faecalis and Bacteriophage MS2 which could be found in the greywater. The study factors was a physico-chemicals factors such as; temperature (6±2,23±2,42±2°c), salinity (1.75 and 3.5% Nacl), oxygen (aerobic and anaerobic condition), nutrient ( rich media , 50%: 50% salt and poor media ), light with photocatalysis ( UV and Visible lights) and slow sand filter (Egyptian desert sand and swimming pool sand). A combination of high temperature, sunlight and photocatlysis are mainly responsible for the rapid decline of bacteria and MS2 coliphage. Slow sand filter have clearly less influence on the survival of bacteria in the greywater, but it effective to decline turbidity and COD for short times.

Paternal care, filial cannibalism and sexual conflict in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus

Lissåker, Maria January 2006 (has links)

Natural and sexual selection and sexual conflict are forces shaping the evolution of reproductive behaviour, while constrained by factors like environment, physiology and life-history trade-offs. Parental care is costly both in terms of time and energy. In fish, filial cannibalism is a strategy for caring males to compensate for some of the energy loss. Human impact like eutrophication also alters the basics for animals living in that environment. It is fundamental to any species to adjust its behaviour to a changing environment. Studying sand goby males, I found trade-offs both regarding parental care allocations, like ventilation vs. predator defence, and investment in present vs. future reproductive success. Paternal sand gobies exposed to water with low oxygen levels increased their fanning effort but did not compensate by eating more eggs, even though an increased current parental effort should affect future reproductive success negatively. Investigating if patterns of filial cannibalism change with time of season, I found no correlation. Theory predicts that it should pay more to eat eggs early, when future mating potential is higher than late in the season. However, as early hatching fry are likely to gain higher fitness through larger size the next breeding season, this may provide an opposing selection pressure. In species with male care the only way a female can affect the level of post-spawning care is by choosing a good mate. A female preference to spawn in nests that already contain eggs of other females has been interpreted as a means to avoid filial cannibalism through a dilution effect or to decrease the costs of search time. Yet, in my study females did not avoid filial cannibalism by preferring large clutches to small ones. Oxygenation of the eggs might be a key factor, since both large and small females preferred spawning in nests with small clutches. Thus, as in most animals, trade-offs clearly govern the reproductive behaviour of sand gobies.

Faul, Dinelle January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to research the therapeutic outcomes achieved by a five year-old boy with Asperger Syndrome (AS), by means of non-directive processes of child centred play therapy (CCP) and sand tray play therapy (STP). In this investigative-descriptive qualitative research design, a saturated, holistic, intrinsic single case study was used as research method. The therapeutic process, events and outcomes of a unique single case within the context of AS, non-directive play therapy and the interactional-pattern analysis (IPA), are described. This study was motivated by the fact that the researcher disposed of data for a unique single case study that could contribute meaningfully to the need for a research database that describes effective therapeutic interventions and outcomes with children with AS. From the perspective of Rogerian person-centred theory (RPT), the literature study focused on an integrated discussion of AS, CCP and STP by means of 17 interpersonal variables of the interactional-pattern analysis (IPA). The following data sources was investigated: interviews with parents and teachers; CCP-sessions of J recorded on video; photos of some of J’s STP-sessions and the therapists’ process notes. Triangulation was used to evaluate the various categories of therapeutic outcomes from different viewpoints and to give meaning to them. The conclusions indicated that this boy with AS had used the non-directive processes of CCP and STP to achieve various therapeutic outcomes in the areas of: imaginary play; dramatic play; social interaction with the therapist, parents, family, teachers, his peer group and with strangers; traumatic experiences during visits to the doctor and bath times; identification, expressing and regulating emotions; and minimising acting out behaviour. Therapeutic outcomes have been demonstrated in 8 IPA-variables, namely: empathy, defining of relationships, potential to evoke acceptance or rejection, sincere interest and congruent conduct, control, emotional distance, problem solving and aspects relating to the presenting problem. The conclusion was reached that the conduct of the boy with AS as well as his mother and the therapist, played a mutual role in achieving his therapeutic outcomes within the 17 IPA-variables. The unstructured process of the non-directive play (CCP and STP) was utilised by a young child with AS to achieve therapeutic outcomes that relate to his everyday existence. A final conclusion is that involving the boy’s mother in his therapy and utilising an adapted Filial play program, enabled the mother to make emotional contact with her son and to diminish conflict between them. Guidelines for therapists are suggested with regard to non-directive responding in therapeutic contexts as found in this study. Furthermore, the contribution of this research to Psychology as science and discipline, is presented. Limitations of this study are indicated and recommendations for further research are made. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Psigologie))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013

Treatment of acid mine drainage using constructed wetland and UV/TiO₂ photocatalysis

Seadira, Tumelo Wordsworth Poloko 05 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Vaal University of Technology / Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious problem associated with mining activities, and it has the potential to contaminate surface and ground water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of constructed wetland and photocatalysis in treating AMD. Three identical unvegetated upflow constructed wetlands packed with natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) and coarse silica sand were made of a cylindrical plastic pipe, and the slurry photocatalyst was prepared using quartz material. A hydro-alcohol thermal method was used to prepare an anatase core-void-shell TiO2 photocatalyst. The results showed that the three unvegetated upflow constructed wetlands (CW) had relatively similar percentage removal of heavy metals despite their varying concentrations within the AMD. The removals were: Fe (86.54 - 90.4%); Cr (56.2 - 64.5%); Mg (56.2 - 67.88%); Ca (77.1 - 100%); and 100% removal was achieved for Be, Zn, Co, Ni, and Mn. The removal of sulphate was also 30%. Heavy metals concentration in CW packing material was significantly higher in the outlet of the constructed wetlands than in the inlet. The adsorption isotherms revealed that the experimental data fitted the Langmuir Isotherms better, which suggested a monolayer coverage of heavy metals on the surface of the adsorbents; thermodynamic studies showed that the nature of adsorption taking place was physical; the kinetics models showed that the adsorption was first order reaction. A higher photocatalytic reduction (62%) of Cr(VI) was obtained at pH 2, 30 mg/l Cr(VI) initial concentration, and three hours of irradiation time. It was also found that the presence of Fe(III) enhanced the reduction of Cr(VI). The core-void-shell TiO2 photocatalyst showed a better activity than the commercial P25 Degussa for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The kinetic studies showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) was first order reaction. Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in real AMD sample was achieved only for the Douglas North Discharge (DND) sample (68%), and the Fe(III) reduction was found to be 83%. Therefore it was concluded that the combination of constructed wetland and UV/ TiO2 photocatalysis employing anatase core-void-shell TiO2 as a photocatalyst has a potential to reduce the toxicity of Cr(VI)-laden acid mine drainage.

Lecture et interprétation du Théâtre d'Ippolito Nievo : « I Beffeggiatori » et les fragments dramatiques / The Reading and interpretation of Ippolito Nievo's Theatre "I Beffeggiatori" and dramatic fragments

Crisanti, Flavia 06 December 2010 (has links)
For a long time Ippolito Nievo’s (1831-1861) theatrical production was considered less important than his work of narrative and was considered as “juvenile work”. On the contrary, during the last ten years of the Nineteenth century, it was reconsidered and it brought to the discovery of several comic texts, such as Le Invasioni Moderne and Il Pindaro Pulcinella, which have showed Nievo’s cleverness in writing plays for the theatre. The edition of the last unpublished production, which is presented in this essay, completes and broadens the studies done on Nievo’s theatre, at the same time, opening several doors for a possible reconsideration of some critical points of Nievo’s literary aesthetics. From the study of the unpublished texts produced before Le Confessioni di un Italiano, in fact, Nievo’s dependence on French literature appeared, especially Balzac, Stendhal and George Sand. The setting of I Beffeggiatori –a political comedy which portrays Italy in 1852-1853 – and its study of the characters recalls the Chartreuse de Parme by Stendhal, his ironical glance at political happenings told by Balzac and it moves away totally from contemporary comic theatre. Don Giovanni –notes for a comic text in verses- results from Stendhalian considerations on the figure of the Seduttore, considerations which we can find in the De l’Amour and in the short story Les Cenci; but Don Giovanni also results from the whole French post-Byron tradition of the myth. Consuelo – the libretto- reveals a clear and evident Sandian matrix in its plot and allows to formulate a theory on the aesthetic Nievian music, full of Mazzinian considerations, well known to Sand too.The edition of these texts has allowed to reformulate some judgements on the origin of Nievo’s irony, even in L’Afrodisiaco per l’amor platonico and in Lettere a Matilde, underlining a matrix which is decidedly and only French.

High-resolution architectural characterization of sand-rich confined turbidite lobes : Examples from the Annot Sandstone Formation (Eocene-Oligocene, SE France)

Etienne, Samuel 13 December 2012 (has links)
The siliciclastic Annot Sandstones formation (SE France) is composed of a thick series of gravitary deposits and represents the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene northward infill by various types of gravitary deposits of relatively small foreland basins developed in front of the Alpine orogen. This study brings new quantitative data on the terminal deposits of this turbidite system (sand-rich lobes) and focuses on their internal architecture from depositional event scale to elementary object scale. A longitudinal distribution model of elementary objects (from proximal vertically stacked channelized lobes to distal tabular lobes) and associated heterogeneities has been established. Those features have not been accurately described in sand-rich turbidite deposits so far. This high internal variability necessarily implies heterogeneities in terms of petrophysical characteristics (porosity, permeability) and reservoir connection that may have a significant impact on fluid circulation. As a comparison, a similar study on calciturbidites sheet-like lobes from the Middle Jurassic Guweyzah Formation of North Oman is introduced. These results allow reconsidering both sedimentary processes involved in sand-rich lobes and also reservoir models that can be established on field analogues.

Contrôle souple de la dynamique éolienne le long d'un littoral artificialisé et propositions de gestion : le cas de la façade maritime du Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque / Aeolian sand transport control and management measures on a human-altered coast : the coastline of Dunkirk seaport, Northern France

Tresca, Antoine 04 April 2013 (has links)
The coastline of Dunkirk seaport is a sedimentary cell where dune morphology is the result of both natural processes and human intervention. This shoreline can be divided in two parts: a western part of 7 km long, where a macrotidal beach is backed by naturally developing coastal dunes, and an eastern part consisting of a 6 km long asphalt dike overtopped in places by low elevated aeolian dunes. This study aims at (1) describing aeolian dunes and their evolution on a human-altered coast, (2) quantifying aeolian sand transport on the upper beach, the seaward slope of the foredune and the asphalt dike, and (3) suggesting management measures in order to solve windblown sand accumulation problems on harbour infrastructures. On the middle term (28 years), diachronic analysis of aerial photographs shows rapid development of dunes area since 1983. On the short term (2 years), topographic surveys reveal that dune development is still ongoing, although dune morphology keeps the marks of passed human interventions. Dunes have naturally developed on asphalt and their formation is initiated by Ammophila arenaria colonisation of numerous perpendicular cracks in the dike. A typology of these dunes is proposed. Dike toe dunes have developed at the beach/dike contact in the most eastern part of the site, where a jetty is interrupting net sediment transport. In situ field measurements revealed that aeolian sand transport is mainly controlled by wind speed and the source of sand available. Under oblique to direct onshore winds, dike toe dunes are the main source of windblown sand on the dike, and aeolian transport is enhanced by a wind speedup on the windward slope. Different kinds of windbreaks have been tested in order to solve uncontrolled aeolian sand transport problems on the dike, as well as to consolidate foredunes. It appeared from the topographic surveys carried out on the windbreaks that although their location seemed to play a major role on the amount of sand captured, fences and synthetic fabrics deployed on sandy surfaces were also able to trap windblown sand on a seaport dike. Management measures considered are a stabilisation of main sand sources at the dike toe and consolidation of foredunes with windbreaks.

Environmental recuperation of sand mining disturbed soils by peat utilization.

Franchi, José Guilherme 21 August 2000 (has links)
The environmental recuperation of areas explored by sand mining in the Vale do Paraíba region, in the State of São Paulo, is a popular aspiration, a constitutional obligation and constitutes a differentiating factor in the visions of modern enterprise. This work studies the utilization of peat as a soil conditioner in the final stage of the recuperation process for these areas: the revival of indigenous vegetation. This idea arose from the author's experience in technological and mineral research into peat, coupled with the observation and monitoring of these environmentally sensitive areas, whose soils were, from an agricultural stance, generally unproductive. The utilization of peat, in these cases, represented the difference between success and the necessity for a replantation process. This study presents a review of the agronomic properties of peat as well as the application of organic matter in the revegetation of damaged land. It is a comparative study between laboratory assay results from soil samples in their original state, and those where the soil has variable peat contents, seeking to ascertain which, if any, results in better general conditions for that particular soil. Both physical and chemical properties were analyzed, with an emphasis on cation exchange capacity, buffering, bulk density, hydraulic conductivity and porosity. There is a possibility that the results of this project can extended beyond the Mineral Industry to other sectors, where there are needs for soil recuperation, leading to cost savings for irrigation, fertilizers and agrotoxic compounds in food production areas.

Caracterização microbiana e degradação de surfactante aniônico em reator anaeróbio de leito fluidificado com água residuária de lavanderia / Microbial characterization and anionic surfactant degradation in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor with laundry wastewater

Braga, Juliana Kawanishi 28 February 2014 (has links)
In this study the removal and degradation of anionic surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) and xenobiotic organic compounds in a commercial laundry wastewater was evaluated in anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) filled with sand as support material, in a bench scale (1, 2 L), as well as the microbial community of the biofime and phase separator biomass at the end of the operation. The reactor was inoculated with sludge from a UASB reactor used in the swine manure treatment and fed with synthetic substrate plus commercial laundry wastewater. Wastewater characterisation, monitoring analyzes of LAS, organic matter and other physico-chemical parameters were performed during the stages of system operation. This operation was divided into five stages: Stage I - biomass adaptation (575 ± 28mg L-1 of COD), Stage II (9.5 ± 3 mg L-1 of LAS and 637 ± 80 mg L-1 of COD ), Stage III (23.3 ± 8 mg L-1 of LAS and 686 ± 92 mg L-1 of COD), Stage IV (21.7 ± 10 mg L-1 of LAS and 691 ± 103 mg L-1 of COD), Stage V (27.9 ± 9.6 mg L-1 of LAS and 666 ± 161 mg L-1 of COD). Application of PCR/DGGE and pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA region was performed to verify the microbial diversity in the operational phase IV (with sucrose) and V (without sucrose). Through the commercial laundry wastewater characterization a wide variation in several parameters concentration was shown, mainly organic matter (704mg L-1 to 4.830mg L-1) and LAS (12.2mg L-1 to 11.949mg L-1). The average removal efficiency of organic matter and LAS was 88% and 60%, respectively, throughout the reactor operation. The populations of the Archaea and Bacteria Domains were 54% and 45% similar, respectively, for Stages IV and V biomass. By pyrosequencing analysis of sand and phase separator samples from the Stages IV and V, 92 genera of which 24 were related to the degradation of LAS (Bdellovibrio, Ferruginibacter, Gemmatimonas, Holophaga, Magnetospirillum, Zoogloea, etc.) were identified.

Impactos da mineração de areia em planícies fluviais meândricas da bacia hidrográfica do Alto Tietê: o caso do rio Embu Guaçu, São Paulo - SP / The geomorphological knowledge about physical meandering systems and pursuits the understanding of the anthropic activities effects on the Alto Tietê: the case of the Embu-Guaçu river, in the southern sectin Sao Paulo county

Estaiano, João Claudio 19 December 2007 (has links)
This study presents the geomorphological knowledge about physical meandering systems and pursuits the understanding of the anthropic activities effects on these physical systems, so characterizing one of the main principles of a anthropogeomorphology and anthropogenic geomorphology. The main purpose of this research was the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the modifications performed by sand mining activities in a fluvial compartment of the meandering floodplain of the Embu-Guaçu river, in the southern sectin Sao Paulo county. This study was performed with the application of evolutionary geomorphological cartography mapping as analytical tool for the physical system conditions in a preintervention situation and after 22 year of sand extraction (state during intervention). Two detailed geomorphological maps were produced: one refers to 1981 and presents the original morphology and the other to 2003 including the anthropogenic morphology. The selection and representation of forms, materials and processes included in geomorphological maps as well as the comparative analysis were based upon a series of geoindicators considered as qualitative and quantitative interpretation parameters.
