Uncanny Sound Design : How can voices in horror media be designed to sound uncanny, and are these effects perceived as being associated with fear?

Emotions of fear have long been the driving factor towards the appeal of the horror genre. Since beingpopularised in mothern years due to the ever growing development of technology, the Uncanny Valley hasfound its way into the horror genre. Today, it’s hard not to stumble across a horror game or movie thatdoes not feature the use of either uncanny sounds or uncanny visuals. With the Uncanny Valley being sofrequently featured in horror media, there has to be a lot of research on the topic one might think. Eventhough there is a substantial amount of research done on the topic, most researchers decide to focus on theuse of visuals and sound combined to research the Uncanny Valley, with research that primarily focus onuncanny sound design are few. This study aims to compare different processing techniques to designsounds to be perceived as uncanny for use within the horror media, and observe if these added processingeffects are perceived as being associated with fear. Evidence of some processing techniques wereobserved as being perceived with emotions of fear, while other techniques showed no significant signs asbeing perceived with fear.

Can white noise be processed in order to affect the perceived scariness of a game level

In this research, a horror game level was created using ”Unreal Engine 4” (Epic games, 2017) where white noise and processed noises was used as ambiences in order to see how it affects the perceived emotions amongst the participants. A pre-study was conducted in order to choose the stimuli for the main experiment and to test attributes. A pilot test was conducted to test the game level to find out any flaws. In the main experiment twenty participants took part in playing the finalized game level and answering a questionnaire. The results showed a change in the emotional quality depending on the noise being present, but it’s unclear if this is caused by the filtering of the noises alone or the filtering of the noises combined with other factors. A post hoc test was also conducted where a valence and arousal chart was created by letting the participants pin point the emotional attributes used in the experiments.

Study and categorize visual and written materials, follow these fantastic creatures, how they look like and how the appearance of them changes through time. Track the source of the appearance by comparing modern sources and older pictures and also by studying old myths and legends. Research what inspiration how impacted the process of creating new concepts. Study and define terms such as imagination and fantasy. Through scientific research, try to map how the children imagine fantastic creatures and from what pictures and text their images come from. What do children find scary?
