Do the Presence of Anchor Institutions Increase Opportunities in Life? : Exploring the Effects of Higher Education Institutions on Pupils’ School Achievements in different neighbourhood typesHachem, Maéva January 2019 (has links)
The number of universities in Sweden has increased since the 1960s and universities have been discussed to have economic and social advantages to the community they are established in. At the same time, residential segregation is an increasing problem which affects the opportunities in life of the most vulnerable. This study aims to explore if the presence of one or several anchor institutions may have an effect on the school achievements of pupils from neighbourhoods with different socioeconomic status in secondary school and upper secondary school. Furthermore, it aims to investigate how the presence of HEIs affect adolescents’ opportunities in life, especially in vulnerable neighbourhoods. The effects of HEIs on the neighbourhoods with different socioeconomic status in Sweden are measured through linear regression analyses with interaction effects. The findings suggest that (1) the presence of university campuses have an equalisation effect on the school achievements of secondary and upper secondary school pupils; (2) the university design matters: new universities have an equalisation effect on the school achievements in contrary to old universities; (3) the presence of a university hospital does not have an improving effect on the grades like universities do, in contrary, the findings suggest that they have a negative effect; and finally (4), there are some evidence indicating that the findings can be explained by endogenous neighbourhood effects, as the presence of universities increase the number of role models within the community, which would affect the school achievements of secondary and upper secondary school pupils.

Interventioner som avser att förbättra placerade barns skolprestationer : En kunskapsöversiktForsman, Hilma January 2011 (has links)
The educational underachievement of children in foster care has been known for a long time. This study aimed to compile and analyze the current knowledge about interventions, intended to improve foster children’s school achievements. The method used was a systematically undertaken narrative review. Despite a comprehensive searching strategy, only ten relevant studies were found, indicating that little has been done to improve the educational outcomes for children in public care. The result shows that eight out of the ten interventions were effective in some way. Literacy appeared to be improved with fairly modest efforts, whilst improvements in numeracy, seemed to need more directed interventions. Among the success factors were providing books, tuition or structured individualized support and involving carers, school and foster care agencies in the process. An implication for the future is that foster children’s poor academic achievements can be improved with focused support. Also there’s a definite need for more intervention studies.

Minskar stöket i utsatta områden omhyresgästerna bor kvar längre?Björing, Gunnar January 2019 (has links)
Hallunda/Norsborg is considered to be an unsafe residential area. Most likely, young people cause adisproportionate high amount of the portion of the insecurity that is related to crime. Therefore it is hereassumed that the insecurity would decrease more with time if society succeeded in motivating more ofthe tenants stay until old age, compared to other possible measures that society can do to improve thesituation. Because the amount of teenager would decline, since we only have teenage children during aperiod of our lives. In this study, longitudinal data regarding the turnover of lease contracts and a number of other factors, have been collected and compared with data regarding the amount of reported crimes committed in thearea. The results show that, measured in the turnover of lease contracts, the tenants stay longer. But despitethis, the amount teenagers and reported crimes has not diminished. However, data from the court forrental issues indicates that the illegal second hand rental of the apartment has increased during theperiod. Thus the conclusion is that the assumption can neither be rejected nor substantiated. Moreoverthe socio-economic status of the residents and the number of police in the area has increased. But thepupils' performance in elementary school has not improved.
