Love and death in art song and opera from 1810-1947Powell, Vivienne January 2009 (has links)
Masters Research - Master of Creative Arts / The study of Love and Death in Art Song and Opera is all- encompassing, threading the study of music with the other arts – literature, especially poetry and drama, and the visual arts, especially painting – and linking the study of philosophy and history, to provide a reference point for the societal attitudes of the time in which my repertoire was written. As the themes of love and death began to be expressed in literature and the arts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, my exploration of this theme has grown into a journey through some of the most beautiful, expressive and well-known vocal music of the Romantic era, and into the twentieth century. The Romantics were intimately concerned with the expression of individual emotions, providing me with many opportunities to study repertoire relating to the many aspects of both love and death. It was interesting to discover how musical expression changed within the different national schools I studied – German, French, Spanish, and some Italian arias. I began my study in 1810 with the songs of Franz Schubert. As the master who revolutionized the German Lied, I felt it appropriate to open my first recital, indeed the first two recitals, with a set of Schubert Lieder. I also studied the works of Robert Schumann in the first two recitals, the only composer whose Lieder I studied as single songs and as a song cycle, the well-loved Frauenliebe und Leben. In Recital 2 I turned my attention to French repertoire, with the study of the magnificent song cycle of Hector Berlioz, Les nuits d’été. In the first two recitals I also studied bel canto and French arias. In the third recital I decided to continue my exploration of French Romantic music in relationship to love and death with a set of songs by Gabriel Fauré. My attention turned back to German repertoire - very different, however, from the works of Schubert and Schumann, in the famous song cycle by Richard Wagner, Wesendoncklieder. Two French songs completed this recital. My final recital featured an all-Spanish program, in which I explored my theme in two song cycles, Spanish opera and zarzuela.

Reinterpreting Schumann: A Study of Large-Scale Structural and Atmospheric Associations in Schumann's 'Frauenliebe und -leben' and 'Dichterliebe' Song CyclesBerry, Jane M January 2011 (has links)
The study of song cycles poses difficulties for both analysts and performers. These challenges stem largely from two qualities intrinsic to the genre: (1) the inclusion of two semiotic systems, language and music, and (2) the use of multi-movement structures. Several scholars have addressed these issues; however, a model built on a balanced consideration of both text-based/dramatic events and purely musical elements, has yet to be offered. This study proposes such a model with separate applications for both performers and analysts. Focusing on the identification of features connecting song cycles in their entirety, deep voice-leading associations and movements in key paths are examined in the application for analysts, whereas the performers’ application concentrates on recognizing underlying “atmospheres” and forms of acceleration. Each application is applied to Schumann’s Frauenliebe und –leben and Dichterliebe song cycles, demonstrating the benefits of employing this model in the development of both performative and analytical interpretations.

Formal Relationships in Clara Wieck's Piano Concerto Op. 7Fox, Margaret Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
Clara Wieck Schumann’s 1836 Piano Concerto Op. 7 represents an era of radical formal experimentation in the early nineteenth century. As such, critics including Robert Schumann questioned its unity, thus prompting late twentieth-century scholars to reassess both its departures from tradition and its cohesive mechanisms. I propose that the concerto’s formal innovations are a result of Wieck’s decision to construct a tripartite work from her autonomous Concertsatz, which became the Finale after the addition of a first and second movement. This study uses William Caplin’s theory of formal functions and Steven Vande Moortele’s theory of two-dimensional sonata form to examine how Wieck complemented the independent Finale with a formally divergent first movement, which facilitates the projection of an overarching sonata form spanning the entire work. In doing so, this study produces a model to assess the concerto’s internal logic.

[EN] In this thesis they are studied cadences in various formulas which are used by the composer Franz Liszt to finish his piano works. This particular aspect of his harmonic language, we call «cadential experimentation», is developed further in his last creative period extending between 1877 and 1885. The detailed analysis of the end of all works written in these years is accompanied by the exam of the terminal cadence writing of his main pieces for keyboard all their previous production. Also we incorporate the investigation of this harmonic process in the most important works of the most prominent pianists-composers contemporaries: Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann y Frédéric Chopin. This comparative study allows us to show the relevance of the figure of Liszt acquired in the renovation of the links in the final cadences and in the process of eliminating the cadence as the punctuation final of the works. His contribution, in quantity and variety, is decisive in this area, becoming the most daring romantic musician, who creates original and revolutionary conclusions for the epoch and even he becomes prescient of an advanced harmonic language. We confirm as well as his constant curiosity and desire for innovation in the harmonic field, which will lead to develop along its production a script that makes it in one of the great innovators of the harmonic vocabulary of the nineteenth century, they are also reflected in the field investigated, and the final «cadential experimentation» becomes in a prominent aspect of the evolution of his harmonic language. After analysis, has made concrete a typology of the various cadences used by the Hungarian master, and we have evaluated the influence of his «cadential activity» in the musical speech of the later composers, delimiting to the composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Up the Ocklawaha : En musikalisk transkription för oboe av tonsättaren Marion BauerScott, Sabina January 2020 (has links)

Robert Schumanns Duette und mehrstimmige LiederSpörl, Birgit 09 June 2022 (has links)

Wandlungen eines KünstlerbildesLoos, Helmut 05 June 2018 (has links)
