A Super Version of Zhu's Theorem

Jordan, Alex, 1979- 06 1900 (has links)
vii, 41 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / We generalize a theorem of Zhu relating the trace of certain vertex algebra representations and modular invariants to the arena of vertex super algebras. The theorem explains why the space of simple characters for the Neveu-Schwarz minimal models NS( p, q ) is modular invariant. It also expresses negative products in terms of positive products, which are easier to compute. As a consequence of the main theorem, the subleading coefficient of the singular vectors of NS( p, q ) is determined for p and q odd. An interesting family of q -series identities is established. These consequences established here generalize results of Milas in this field. / Adviser: Arkady Vaintrob

3D Printed Heat Exchangers: An Experimental Study

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: As additive manufacturing grows as a cost-effective method of manufacturing, lighter, stronger and more efficient designs emerge. Heat exchangers are one of the most critical thermal devices in the thermal industry. Additive manufacturing brings us a design freedom no other manufacturing technology offers. Advancements in 3D printing lets us reimagine and optimize the performance of the heat exchangers with an incredible design flexibility previously unexplored due to manufacturing constraints. In this research, the additive manufacturing technology and the heat exchanger design are explored to find a unique solution to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers. This includes creating a Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) geometry, Schwarz-D in this case, using Mathematica with a flexibility to control the cell size of the models generated. This model is then encased in a closed cubical surface with manifolds for fluid inlets and outlets before 3D printed using the polymer nylon for thermal evaluation. In the extent of this study, the heat exchanger developed is experimentally evaluated. The data obtained are used to derive a relationship between the heat transfer effectiveness and the Number of Transfer Units (NTU).The pressure loss across a fluid channel of the Schwarz D geometry is also studied. The data presented in this study are part of initial experimental evaluation of 3D printed TPMS heat exchangers.Among heat exchangers with similar performance, the Schwarz D geometry is 32% smaller compared to a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2018

French Caribbean Women and the Problem of Empowerment: A look at Moi, Tituba, sorcière...Noire de Salem and Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle

Lovasz, Michelle Anne 15 May 2002 (has links)
This thesis explores the problem of self-empowerment for the French Caribbean Black woman as presented in the novels Moi, Tituba, sorcière...Noire de Salem and Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle. The respective authors, Maryse Condé and Simone Schwarz- Bart, use fiction to convey the plight of women in the French Caribbean. They successfully create characters who refuse marginalization imposed by their patriarchal and oppressive societies. Condé’s novel, set in the 17th century first in Barbados, and then in Puritan New England depicts the challenges Tituba overcomes in reaching liberation. Schwarz-Bart presents the story of Télumée, set in Guadeloupe at the beginning of the 20th century. My study focuses specifically on the characters of Tituba and Télumée to show ways that they thwart the dominant social structures and norms that seek to disempower them. It reveals ways that Condé and Schwarz-Bart make use of literature to reverse European perceptions of gender and race. Consequently, the literary fictions they create suggest possible ways of escaping marginalization and refusing racial and gendered subjugation. / Master of Arts

Maheux, Dominique 19 April 2018 (has links)

A crítica de Roberto Schwarz (1958-1968): um percurso atravessado pelo golpe de 1964 / The criticism of Roberto Schwarz (1958-1968): a course crossed by the coup of 1964

Reimberg, Mauricio 17 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation investigates aspects of the configuration of Roberto Schwarzs critical argument. The main material of analysis are the essays about aesthetical and Brazilian cultural forms written by the author between 1958 and 1968, in a period that embraces his theoretical production prior to his exile in France. In the survey of this path, it is intended to distinguish the contradictory clashes between the categories of the critic and certain ambivalent historical experience internalized by the local novel, which would be a structuralizing data of Schwarzs meditation. At a first moment, while this social matter already appears under the diffuse sign of failure of literary realism in the country, the analytical-interpretive point of view supposes a common reference to the notion of autonomous work as the congenial instance to the dialectical criticism. Dealing with the corporate-military 1964 Brazilian coup détat, Schwarz would operate in a more incisive way with its practical immediacy. And this wish of the political efficacy of the criticism, when bumped against historical limits, redefines and stirs the divergent vectors that used to characterize his social experience of time. In this way, judgments oriented by a cumulative and ascending temporality, disputed in radical political terms - and backed by the criticism to the defeated populist order -, clash against diagnoses about a present situation that seemed to accommodate in itself, with no class antagonisms clearly configured, resizing what Schwarz understood to be the realistic unfolding of life.

Numerical Conformal mappings for regions Bounded by Smooth Curves

Andersson, Anders January 2006 (has links)

/
In many applications, conformal mappings are used to transform two-dimensional regions into simpler ones. One such region for which conformal mappings are needed is a channel bounded by continuously differentiable curves. In the applications that have motivated this work, it is important that the region an approximate conformal mapping produces, has this property, but also that the direction of the curve can be controlled, especially in the ends of the channel.

This thesis treats three different methods for numerically constructing conformal mappings between the upper half-plane or unit circle and a region bounded by a continuously differentiable curve, where the direction of the curve in a number of control points is controlled, exact or approximately.

The first method is built on an idea by Peter Henrici, where a modified Schwarz-Christoffel mapping maps the upper half-plane conformally on a polygon with rounded corners. His idea is used in an algorithm by which mappings for arbitrary regions, bounded by smooth curves are constructed.

The second method uses the fact that a Schwarz-Christoffel mapping from the upper half-plane or unit circle to a polygon maps a region Q inside the half-plane or circle, for example a circle with radius less than 1 or a sector in the half--plane, on a region Omega inside the polygon bounded by a smooth curve. Given such a region Omega, we develop methods to find a suitable outer polygon and corresponding Schwarz-Christoffel mapping that gives a mapping from Q to Omega.

Both these methods use the concept of tangent polygons to numerically determine the coefficients in the mappings.

Finally, we use one of Don Marshall's zipper algorithms to construct conformal mappings from the upper half--plane to channels bounded by arbitrary smooth curves, with the additional property that they are parallel straight lines when approaching infinity.

Couplage entre éléments finis et représentation intégrale pour les problèmes de diffraction acoustique et électromagnétique : analyse de convergence des méthodes de Krylov et méthodes multipôles rapides / Coupling between finite elements and integral representation for acoustic and electromagnetic diffraction problems : study of the convergence for Krylov method and fast multipole methods

Rais, Rania 14 February 2014 (has links)
We are concerned with the study of different aspects of a numerical strategy for the resolution of acoustic and electromagnetic scattering problems. We focus more particu- larly on a coupling of finite element and integral representation (CEFRI) : we study an iterative algorithm by analogy with a domain decomposition method, and consider the use of the Fast Multipole Method (FMM). The system to be solved involves integral operators which requires the use of fast methods such as the FMM. The correspondence with a domain decomposition method is obtained by extending to the exterior Maxwell problem the results derived by F. Ben Belgacem et al. for the Helmholtz problem posed in unbounded domain. To this aim, we show the analogy to the Schwarz method with total overlap. This interpretation of CEFRI suggests a preconditioner for Krylov solvers and enables us to have a preliminary idea of their convergence. We derive in this context an analytical proof of a superlinear convergence of GMRES in a spherical configuration. The validation of these aspects has been achieved by the enrichment of the finite element library Mélina++ in C++.

Marxismo como crítica da ideologia: um estudo sobre os pensamentos de Fernando Henrique Cardoso e Roberto Schwarz / Marxism as a critique of ideology: study of the thoughts of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Roberto Schwarz

Brito, Leonardo Octavio Belinelli de 15 May 2019 (has links)
Having as a starting point the intellectual experience shared by Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Roberto Schwarz in the so-called Marx Seminar, the present work constitutes a comparative study regarding the Marxist elaborations of both authors regarding the lines of force of the development of capitalist society in Brazil since its independence. The purpose of the comparison is to highlight the points of convergence of their thinking, which would allow to affirm the existence of an \"interpretation of Brazil\" forged in the works of some of the participants of the Marx Seminar. The thesis argues that the formulation of the mentioned \"interpretation of Brazil\" in the works of the two authors was derived from a critical analysis of the theoretical legacy of Karl Marx, a process which a relevant literature calls \"nationalization of Marxism\", besides the influence of other previous \"interpretations of Brazil\", as those formulated by Caio Prado Júnior, Antonio Candido, Florestan Fernandes and Celso Furtado. Taking this in account, it will be tried to demonstrate that the process of theoretical elaboration of the authors can be interpreted from the notion of ideology critique. In formal terms the thesis has two parts: the first is dedicated to the analysis of the studies carried out by Cardoso and Schwarz on the Brazilian slave society of the 19th century; the second one is based on the interpretations of the two authors about the development and modernization of the country in the 20th century, with special attention to the post-1930 period.
