(M)otherhood : the mother symbol in postcolonial francophone literature from West Africa and the Caribbean

Glenn, Brittany Austin 01 January 2008 (has links)
French colonial regimes in West Africa and the Caribbean left the diverse populations fragmented without a central set of cultural values to unify them. The search for identity permeates postcolonial francophone literature with the mother symbol at its center. Coinciding with popular ideologies, the portrayal of motherhood has evolved from the source of ancient roots in traditional African society to the enterprise of the future by cultivating their own mores. By analyzing the mother symbol in a variety of texts from West Africa and the Caribbean and by situating them in their historical and social context, I will assess the role of the mother in the quest for a new identity. The earlier works written by male authors in the l 940s and 1950s tend to associate the mother figure with nostalgia for the native land and tradition, and gave her stereotypical characterizations of femininity such as docility, smothering sentimentality, and dependence. The more contemporary works show mothering outside of the conventional practices, especially the female authors who include a variety of mother figures in their texts in an attempt to dispel repressive definitions. Nevertheless, all of the literary works in the study equate mothering with a prospect of hope.

Certain problems concerning polynomials and transcendental entire functions of exponential type

Hachani, Mohamed Amine 06 1900 (has links)
Let P(z):=\sum_{\nu=0}^na_\nu z^{\nu}$ a polynomial of degree n and M:=\sup_{|z|=1}|P(z)|$. Without any additional restriction, we know that $|P '(z) | \leq Mn$ for $| z | \leq 1$ (Bernstein's inequality). Now if we assume that the zeros of the polynomial $P$ are outside the circle $| z | = k$, which improvement could be made to the Bernstein inequality? It is already known [{\bf \ref{Mal1}}] that in the case where $k \geq 1$, one has$$ (*) \qquad | P '(z) | \leq \frac{n}{1 + k} M \qquad (| z | \leq 1),$$ what would it be in the case where $k < 1$? What is the analogous inequality for an entire function of exponential type $\tau$? On the other hand, if we assume that $P$ has all its zeros in $| z | \geq k \, \, (k \geq 1),$ which is the estimate of $| P '(z) |$ on the unit circle, in terms of the first four terms of its Maclaurin series expansion. This thesis comprises a contribution to the analytic theory of polynomials in the light of these problems.

Haeberlein, Florian 14 October 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Doghraji, Salma 05 December 2017 (has links)
Directional textures are the particular class of textured images representing hypersurfaces (dermal lines, material fibers, seismic horizons, etc.). For this type of textures, the reconstruction of hypersurfaces describes their geometry and structure. From the preliminary estimation of the orientation field, reconstructions can be obtained by means of the minimization of a partial differential equation under constraints, linearized and iteratively resolved in the Fourier domain. In this work, the reconstructions of hypersurfaces are considered as means of description both upstream and downstream of the geometry of the directional textures. In an upstream approach, the reconstruction of local and dense streams of hypersurfaces leads to a spatial transformation model to locally unfold the texture or its gradient field and to improve the estimation of the orientation field compared with the classic tensor structure. In a downstream approach, reconstructions of hypersurfaces carried out on any polygonal supports, either isolated or imbricated, lead to more accurate reconstructions than existing methods. The proposed approaches implement chains of conformal space transformations (transformation of Schwarz-Christoffel, Möbius, etc.) in order to respect the constraints and to access fast PDE solution schemes.

Modèles variationnels dynamique et hybride pour la simulation numérique d'écoulements turbulents / Dynamic and hybrid variational models for the simulation of turbulent flows

Moussaed, Carine 18 December 2013 (has links)
This work is a contribution to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows with the aim of industrial application. At first, we focus on a new combination "VMS-LES/dynamic procedure" for the simulation of flows around circular and square cylinders. The VMS-LES approach adopted in this work is original in using an averaging procedure over agglomerated finite volumes in order to separate the scales, the dynamic approach being the one introduced by Germano in LES. A RANS/VMS-LES hybrid approach is then evaluated on the circular cylinder test case at high Reynolds numbers. This approach introduces a hybridization parameter which privileges the RANS model or the VMS-LES model according to the grid resolution. Finally, the performance of a two-level Schwarz algorithm, which uses the deflation and balancing methods, are examined in terms of efficiency and scalability in the context of VMS-LES simulations.

High performance computing for the discontinuous Galerkin methods

Mukhamedov, Farukh January 2018 (has links)
Discontinuous Galerkin methods form a class of numerical methods to find a solution of partial differential equations by combining features of finite element and finite volume methods. Methods are defined using a weak form of a particular model problem, allowing for discontinuities in the discrete trial and test spaces. Using a discontinuous discrete space mesh provides proper flexibility and a compact discretisation pattern, allowing a multidomain and multiphysics simulation. Discontinuous Galerkin methods with a higher approximation polynomial order, the socalled p-version, performs better in terms of convergence rate, compared with the low order h-version with smaller element sizes and bigger mesh. However, the condition number of the Galerkin system grows subsequently. This causes surge in the amount of required storage, computational complexity and in the time required for computation. We use the following three approaches to keep the advantages and eliminate the disadvantages. The first approach will be a specific choice of basis functions which we call C1 polynomials. These ensure that the majority of integrals over the edge of the mesh elements disappears. This reduces the total number of non-zero elements in the resulting system. This decreases the computational complexity without loss in precision. This approach does not affect the number of iterations required by chosen Conjugate Gradients method when compared to the other choice of basis functions. It actually decreases the total number of algebraic operations performed. The second approach is the introduction of suitable preconditioners. In our case, the Additive two-layer Schwarz method, developed in [4], for the iterative Conjugate Gradients method is considered. This directly affects the spectral condition number of the system matrix and decreases the number of iterations required for the computation. This approach, however, increases the total number of algebraic operations and might require more operational time. To tackle the rise in the number of algebraic operations, we introduced a modified Additive two-layer non-overlapping Schwarz method with a Multigrid process. This using a fixed low-order approximation polynomial degree on a coarse grid. We show that this approach is spectrally equivalent to the first preconditioner, and requires less time for computation. The third approach is a development of an efficient mathematical framework for distributed data structure. This allows a high performance, massively parallel, implementation of the discontinuous Galerkin method. We demonstrate that it is possible to exploit properties of the system matrix and C1 polynomials as basis functions to optimize the parallel structures. The previously mentioned parallel data structure allows us to parallelize at the same time both the matrix-vector multiplication routines for the Conjugate Gradients method, as well as the preconditioner routines on the solver level. This minimizes the transfer ratio amongst the distributed system. Finally, we combined all three approaches and created a framework, which allowed us to successfully implement all of the above.
