Applied behavior analysis (ABA) remains at the forefront of effective interventions for children with autism. In some cases, the high cost of treatment and other environmental factors limit families from accessing services. The Easter Seals North Texas (ESNT) Autism Treatment Program (ATP) was created to reach high risk, underserved families in the North Texas area by providing early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) services to children with autism. This evaluation was conducted to analyze the success of meeting the ESNT ATP program mission to provide culturally responsive ABA to children. The evaluation includes the design of assessments, the analysis of the assessment data, and a set of recommendations to maintain and increase program accessibility.

Egyptian religious symbols in Judah and Israel from 900 B.C.E. to 587 B.C.E. : a study of seal inconography

When cultures meet, mutual influences and cultural exchanges are unavoidable. Egypt’s contact with Syro-Palestine goes back to at least the Chalcolithic Period. Egypt was a major role player in the region throughout the Bronze Age. The discoveries at Ugarit have placed a lot of emphasis on possible Canaanite influences on the religion of ancient Israel. The purpose of this study is to investigate if cultural exchanges led to Egyptian religious concepts being accepted in Israel and Judah during the period 900-587 B.C.E. (Iron IIB and C). For this reason the iconography on contemporary seals was investigated. Symbols in ancient times, especially amongst illiterate societies, were important instruments in conveying ideas and concepts. The Hebrew Bible abounds with symbolism to illustrate the powers of Yahweh. Egyptian iconography on Hebrew seals, in particular seal amulets, has been regarded by most biblical scholars as mere decorations and the amulets regarded as ‘good luck’ charms. Seal amulets were important instruments of magical ritual in ancient Egypt, where there was no distinction between magic and religion. Biblical prohibitions against magic show that in Israel and Judah, it was regarded as a form of idolatry, thus religious rituals. An important factor to be considered is the influence of Phoenicia on the region during the Period. Close relationships seem to have existed between Phoenicia with the United Kingdom of Israel and later with the northern Kingdom of Israel. An investigation of Phoenician seals from the period revealed that Egyptian religious iconography was used by all levels of Phoenician society. They inter alia used Egyptian imagery to portray their own gods. Seals from Israel and Judah during Iron IIB and C indicate that Egyptian religious iconography was also used on seals by all levels of society in those kingdoms. Israel, due to its close proximity to Phoenicia, probably imported these images via Phoenicia. Judah, due to its isolation, probably got those images directly from Egypt. Some of these images may be ascribed to attempts to portray aspects of Yahweh’s powers. Others convey definite Egyptian religious messages. Experimental and numerical investigation of the tribological properties of water-hydraulic seals

The friction process occurs in most structures, especially in contact between two faces with relative motion. The process of friction and abrasion affects the productivity and performance of equipment. In this study, the simulations and experimentations are formed to understand the friction and wear properties of hydraulic rubber seals. The tribometer test rig is developed to investigate rubber samples' friction and abrasion properties with different contact conditions. An observation structure to measure the contact area of the rubber sample also was constructed. The experiments are performed with different contact conditions (dry contact, wet contact, mud contact), different geometry of sample (half-cylinder, half-sphere), quite different contact directions (sliding direction axial and sliding direction lateral), fillet radius, contact angle or rubber material with different sliding velocities and normal forces. Analyse théorique et expérimentale des joints d'étanchéité à bague flottante et des joints rainurés segmentés / Theoretical and experimental analysis of floating ring annular seals and of radial segmented seals

Ce mémoire présente une étude théorique et expérimentale de joints annulaires à bague flottante ainsi que de joints rainurés segmentés, destinés à assurer l’étanchéité dynamique au sein de machines tournantes à haute vitesse dans les domaines aéronautique et aérospatial. Des joints annulaires à bague flottante ont été testés sur un banc d’essais dédié au sein de l’institut Pprime pour de multiples configurations de vitesse de rotation et de différence de pression étanchée. La réponse dynamique des joints par rapport aux vibrations du rotor a été étudiée pour différentes amplitudes de l’excitation. Certains résultats issus de cette étude ont été confrontés à une modélisation numérique basée sur les équations de mouvement d’un joint soumis aux forces d’inertie, aux forces hydrodynamiques dans son étanchéité principale et aux forces de frottement à l’étanchéité secondaire. Le coefficient de frottement à l’étanchéité secondaire a été estimé à partir du modèle de Greenwood et Williamson, appliqué au cas d’un régime de lubrification mixte. Les comparaisons réalisées valident le modèle numérique utilisé, qui reproduit le comportement d’un joint soumis à une excitation rotorique donnée. Un autre modèle est proposé pour le cas des joints rainurés segmentés. Les écoulements au sein des différentes parties d’un tel joint ont été modélisés par des méthodes distinctes. Les forces de frottement sont étudiées par un modèle similaire à celui utilisé dans le cas des bagues flottantes. Une étude paramétrique sur différentes caractéristiques géométriques et de fonctionnement du joint a été menée. / This thesis presents a theoretical and experimental study of floating ring annular seals and radial segmented seals. These seals are designed to prevent leakage inside high-speed rotating machinery used in aeronautics and aerospace applications. Floating ring annular seals were tested on a dedicated test rig inside the Institut Pprime. Various rotation speed and pressure difference configurations were used. The behavior of the floating rings when submitted to rotor vibrations was studied for different excitation amplitudes. Results from this study were confronted to a numerical model based on the equations of motion of the seal. The seal is driven by inertia forces, hydrodynamic forces in the main seal and friction forces on the secondary seal. The friction coefficient on the secondary seal was estimated by Greenwood and Williamson’s model for mixed lubrication. The analysis validates the theoretical model, which reproduces the dynamic behavior of a seal driven by a given rotor excitation. Another model was used to study segmented seals. The flow in each part of such a seal was modeled with various methods. Friction forces were studied with a model similar to that used for floating rings. A parametric study was performed on various geometric and operating parameters.

La grande diversité des applications, dans tous les domaines industriels, des plus simples aux plus complexes, que ce soit pour un usage quotidienne ou pour des applications high-tech, nécessite la conception continue de systèmes d'étanchéité de plus en plus performants. Les vérins pneumatiques sont des éléments fondamentaux de l'automatisation dans des domaines industriels très variés : les dispositifs de levage, la robotique, l'aérospatial, les systèmes respiratoire, etc. Cependant, un dysfonctionnement d'étanchéité conduit à des performances plus faibles et même à des disfonctionnements. Inversement, une meilleure connaissance des phénomènes aux interfaces, permettra l’amélioration du rendement, la prolongation de la durée de vie et de la fiabilité des différentes applications pneumatiques.Ce travail de thèse est focalisé sur l'étude expérimentale et numérique des systèmes d'étanchéité par joints pneumatiques. Un banc d'essais modulable a été conçu et réalisé pour permettre l'investigation expérimentale de différents types de joints pneumatiques, pour une large gamme de conditions de fonctionnement, en termes de vitesse linéaire, pression pneumatique et solutions constructives. Il permet principalement de caractériser le frottement des joints mais aussi la visualisation des phénomènes physiques au niveau de la zone d'étanchéité et de son environnement.En parallèle, un modèle théorique ElastoHydroDynamique, incluant la prise en compte des conditions de lubrification mixte et le comportement rhéologique non-newtonien de lubrifiant (graisse) a été développé. Il est basé sur le couplage d'un logiciel de calcul non-linéaire (permettant la prise en compte du comportement mécanique hyperélastique des joints) et un modèle d'écoulement en film mince. Les comparaisons de mesures expérimentales avec les prédictions numériques ont permis de valider le modèle théorique ainsi que d'améliorer la compréhension des conditions de fonctionnement et d'alimentation de la zone d'étanchéité. / The great diversity of applications in all industrial fields, from the simplest to the most complex, whether for everyday use or for high-tech applications, requires the continuous design of increasingly efficient sealing systems. Pneumatic cylinders are fundamental elements of automation in a wide variety of industrial fields: lifting devices, robotics, aerospace, respiratory systems, etc. However, a sealing failure leads to lower performance and even malfunctions. Conversely, a better knowledge of the phenomena at the interfaces will allow the improvement of efficiency, the extension of the service life and of the reliability of the various pneumatic applications.This thesis work focuses on the experimental and numerical study of pneumatic seal systems. A modular test bench has been designed and built to allow the experimental investigation of different types of pneumatic seals, for a wide range of operating conditions, in terms of linear velocity, pneumatic pressure and constructive solutions. It mainly allows to characterize the friction of the joints but also the visualization of physical phenomena at the level of the sealing zone and its environment.In parallel, an ElastoHydroDynamic theoretical model, including the consideration of mixed lubrication conditions and the non-Newtonian rheological behaviour of lubricant (grease) has been developed. It is based on the coupling of a non-linear comercial software (allowing the modelling of the hyperelastic mechanical behaviour of the joints) and a thin film flow model. Comparisons of experimental measurements with numerical predictions validated the theoretical model and improved the understanding of the operating and supply conditions of the sealing area.

本論文以「黃牧甫生平及篆刻藝術之研究」為題目,旨在對其生平及篆刻藝術作系統整理和討論。黃牧甫(1849-1908/1909),安徽黟縣人,為晚清最重要的篆刻家之一。由於家庭濡染,自幼便對篆學產生興趣,八、九歲始習刻印。後因太平軍與清軍戰,家園被毀,困苦失學,雙親亦相繼離世,為補生計,被迫離鄉到江西南昌謀生,曾於照相館工作,後遷廣州,改以鬻書治印自給。黃牧甫為晚清集大成的印人,尤對廣東印壇產生源遠的影響,故被譽為「嶺南派」之初袓。 / 黃牧甫初宗「鄧派」鄧石如(1743-1805)、吳讓之(1799-1870),後服膺於趙之謙(1829-1884)的印學主張,取徑「印外求印」,故面貌多樣,印文體勢獨特。又取法漢印模式,講究完整光潔,運以衝刀,不作斷續刻劃,點劃乾淨俐落。尤精於章法,平正而不落呆板,自創一格,繼「鄧派」後於晚清印壇上別樹一幟。 / 在黃印的整理方面,本研究主要以「摹擬期」、「蛻變期」、「成熟期」作為分期,以便探討其不同時期的篆刻特質。據本研究所搜集,黃氏存世印蛻約有二千四百方。它們被整合分析,編成年譜,建構一個系統、完備的資料庫。其中印款資料更提供了珍貴的第一手資料,增補了歷史文獻上的不足。 / 黃牧甫一生治印不斷,作品極豐,然卻失散各地,難以匯集。幸而,其印譜的流傳卻相對豐富,最重要的要數黃氏生前自輯《般若波羅蜜心經印譜》、《黃牧甫自存印譜》及《黃穆甫印存續補》,故印貌得以保存,為後世留下重要的研究資料。當中《黃穆甫印存續補》所錄印拓,更對研究黃氏「成熟期」印風非常重要。由於此譜為海外孤本,且尚未見世,所以目前有關黃牧甫的著述,均未能涵蓋這部重要資料。然在此論文發表前,因得機緣而認識收藏家林章松先生,得其不吝嗇借出此譜作研究之用,確為本研究提供有力依據和借鑒。 / 黃牧甫為晚清重要的篆刻家,具相當高的研究價值,更是探究流派篆刻由傳統走向當代的關鍵人物,惜至今其系統研究卻極之匱乏。本論文將綜合歷史、文化、社會及藝術等不同角度,並借鑒相關學術領域的研究方法和成果,透過文獻及視覺分析,對黃牧甫的生平和篆刻藝術作全面考述,從而建立一份可靠的研究資料,令篆刻藝術史有更大的發展空間。 / Entitled “A Study of Huang Mufu’s Life and Seal Engraving Art, this paper aims to investigate his life and art of seal engraving. Huang Mufu (1849-1908/1909), born in Anhui Province, was one of the most important seal engravers in the late Qing dynasty. / Huang Mufu first learned from Deng Shiru (1743-1805) and Wu Rangzhi (1799-1870) of the Deng school, and later followed the thinking of “seeking artistic links for seal making of Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884). Therefore, his seals took on various forms and his seal inscriptions were unique. He also drew on the pattern of seals of the Han dynasty, which pursued tidiness and smoothness and applied Swift knife to create clean and neat strokes. He created his own style that was peculiar in the late Qing dynasty and had far-reaching influence on the seal engraving community of Guangdong Province, so he was renowned as the originator of the Lingnan school. / Huang made seals throughout his life and left over rich works. According to the information collected from this research, Huang has about 2,400 seals, which have been analyzed, integrated and chronicled into a systematic and complete database. Many of his seal impressions and colophons provide rare firsthand information for this paper, and hoped to serve as important materials for later studies. Based on the collected sources, this study divided Huang’s career into the imitation, transmutation and maturation stages, in order to discuss his seals’ characteristics in different periods. / There has been an extreme scarcity of studies on this topic. Therefore, this paper made a comprehensive study which involved a survey of the primary and secondary literature on Huang Mufu’s life and career. An analysis of the relevant sources enables his career to be reconstructed on a sound chronological basis, and allows his work to be seen in its proper context. / This study also made an important contribution to a relatively little-studied area of the history of Chinese art. Flow and Windage Heating in Labyrinth Seals

The ability to quantify leakage flow and windage heating for labyrinth seals with honeycomb lands is critical in understanding gas turbine engine system performance and predicting its component lifes. Variety of labyrinth seal configurations (number of teeth, stepped or straight, honeycomb cell size) are in use in gas turbines, and for each configuration, there are many additional geometric factors that can impact a seal’s leakage and windage characteristics. To achieve high performance in modern gas turbine engines, the labyrinth seals operate at low clearances and high rotational speed which are generally deployed with honeycomb lands on the stator. During the transient operation of aircraft engines, the stator and rotor mechanical and thermal growths differ from one another and can often result in the rotor’s incursion into the stator honeycomb structure. The incursions create rub-grooves in the honeycomb lands that can subsequently enlarge as the engine undergoes various manoeuvres. However, the effects of different honeycomb cell size, rotation and presence of rub-groove have not been thoroughly investigated in previously published work. The objective of the present research is to numerically investigate the influence of the above three factors on seal leakage and windage heating. The present work focuses the development of a numerical methodology aimed at studying above effects. Specifically, a three-dimensional CFD model is developed utilizing commercial finite volume-based software incorporating the RNG k-ε turbulence model. Detail validation of the numerical model is performed by comparing the leakage and windage heating measurements of several rig tests. The turbulent Schmidt number is found to be an important parameter governing the leakage prediction. It depends on honeycomb cell size and clearance for honeycomb seals, and Reynolds number in the presence smooth lands. The present numerical model with the modified RNG k- turbulence model predicts seal leakage and windage heating within 3-10% with available experimental data. Using the validated numerical model, a broad parametric study is conducted by varying honeycomb cell size, radial clearance, pressure ratio and rotational speed for a four-tooth straight-through labyrinth seal with and without rub-grooves. They further indicate that presence of rub-grooves increases seal leakage and reduce windage heating, specifically at smaller clearance and for larger honeycomb cell size. Rotation significantly reduces leakage with smooth stator land and smaller honeycomb cells whereas the effect is minimal for larger (3.2mm) honeycomb cells. However, at very high rotational speed seal flow reduces in all seal configurations due to high temperature rise and Rayleigh line effects. At no rub condition and lower clearance, the larger honeycomb cells leak more flow due to high bypass flow through the honeycomb cells. This results into lower pocket swirl and higher windage. When the seal clearance increases the larger honeycomb cells offers more drag to the seal flow, therefore they leak less. At higher clearances the flow travels like a strong wall jet and isolates the pocket air from honeycomb cells. Hence, at open clearances labyrinth seals with any honeycomb cell size essentially produce the same pocket swirl and windage heating.

Representations of the cow and calf in Minoan art

Research into the depiction of cattle in Minoan Art ha'i concentrated on representations of interaction between men and cattle, in particular, the images of bull sports. This emphasis has detracted from other types of cattle imagery. In this thesis the representation of the cow and calf in Minoan glyptic is assessed. Discussion of representation and meaning are of equal value, as a full understanding of the potential meaning of an image is dependent upon a detailed knowledge of what is represented. Specific anatomical and behavioural details described in the images are therefore compared with known physiological and behavioural characteristics. The Bronze Age representations are found to be very accurate and detailed in their description of the relationship between the cow and calf. Both the aesthetic and social contexts of the image are discussed in detail. The majority of representations of cows and calves are found on seals and sealings. The size, shape and restrictions of the medium as well as the range of potential uses of the stones (administrative, amuletic, jewellery) are considered. Fauna! evidence from Bronze Age Crete and accounts of cattle in Linear B texts confirm the importance of bovines as an integral part of the agricultural system as well as providing evidence of the range of cattle exploited. In discussing the potential meaning of the image, the survey draws on Bronze Age Aegean, Near Eastern and Egyptian evidence and later Greek (in particular Cretan) examples. Evidence from unrelated societies in which the cow is prominent is used as evidence of the diversity of possible meaning. The thesis concludes that it is not possible to categorise the image as specifically religious or secular; the range of potential meanings reflect the importance of the animal in all aspects of Minoan society.

Effects of a Surface Engineered Metallic Coating on Elastomeric Valve Stem Seal Leakage

Valve stem seal leakage is a major source of fugitive emissions, and controlling these emissions can result in added expense in leak detection and repair programs. Elastomeric O-rings can be used as valve stem seals, and O-ring manufacturers recommend lubrication of elastomeric seals to prevent damage and to assure proper sealing. In this research, a metallic coating was applied as a lubricant using a vacuum vapor deposition process to the surface of elastomeric valve stem seals. Valve stem leak measurements were taken to determine if the coated O-rings, alone or with the recommended lubrication, reduced valve stem seal leakage. This research determined that the metallic coating did not reduce valve stem leakage.
