Freitas, Thiago Colombo de January 2005 (has links)

Perceptions of J.S. Bach and performance of his music in nineteenth-century England

Pardee, Katharine January 2013 (has links)
At the turn of the nineteenth centudy knowledge of J.S. Bach was limited in England to a very few musicians, mostly German organists connected with the Hanoverian court. By the close fof the century, Bach had won widespread popularity, and England was second only to Germany in numbers of published editions, performances, and the written word. This thesis looks at the reception of J.S. Bach in nineteenth-century England, and considers why England reacted with such enthusiasm to his works. First. the elements important to Bach reception are explored and situated in English culture at the beginning of the nineteenth century; areas such as the Ancient and Modern discourse; the interest in historicism; the attraction of German culture; the love for Handel; and the notion of the sublime (especially in terms of music) are discussed. In Chapter 2, Bach is seen through the activities of his proponents in the first part of the nineteenth century, both performers and writers. Since it will be shown that it was on the backs of the choral and organ music that Bach entered into English musical consciousness, the reception of those genres is considered in the following two chapters, with a particular focus on the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B Minor in the area of choral music (Chapter 3). In Chapter 4 I consider Bach and the English organ, and the activities of Mendelssohn, Gauntlett, and those others who were his advocates in the first half of the century after Wesley. Finally, I summarise the topic by looking at the ways his music was interpreted to fit the ideal so nineteenth-century English culture, and how he was regarded through an English lens.

Continuous Harmonic Structure in J.S. Bach's Triple Fugues in The Well-Tempered Clavier and Art of Fugue

Hahn, Stephen (Stephen Ernst) 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores how the harmonic structures of J.S. Bach's triple fugues interact with their formal, contrapuntal designs. It attempts to explain how each of these elaborate fugues is supported by a single, uninterrupted structure that holds the entire work together. In Bach's fugues one generally encounters large-scale goal-directed motion towards the concluding tonic; this continuous harmonic motion towards the final tonic is consistent with the aesthetics of the Baroque style, which valorizes constant motion or dynamism.

"Från En Kriminell Till Frälst" : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av en intervju i Framgångspodden med Sebastian Stakset.

Filis, Johanna January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the potential of coping theory in the analysis of a life story presented in a podcast. This was achieved through the following research questions: What aspects are emphasized in Sebastian Stakset's past lifestyle and current life? Which themes in Stakset's life story reveal that the medium used to convey it is a podcast? How does Pargament's coping theory function in the analysis of a life transformation story presented in a podcast? The study employed the methods podcast ethnography and qualitative content analysis to answer these questions, based on the theoretical framework of coping theory, podcast as a tool for individual change, and prior research. The results indicate that Stakset's childhood, mental health, criminal background, music career, and religious conversion comprise the primary areas of focus in his life story. The story is influenced by elements such as success, marketing, newsworthiness, listener interactions, and language use due to its presentation in a podcast. The study reveals connections between coping theory and the transformation of orientation systems into specific practices, maintenance and change mechanisms, significance, and stressful situations. However, some assumptions could not be linked due to a lack of manifest expression or infrequent occurrence. This suggests that some of the assumptions of coping theory can be utilized when applied to a life story communicated through a podcast but needs to be refined to cover all assumptions.

The effect of beach nourishment on loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nesting and reproductive success at Sebastian Inlet, Florida

Herren, Richard Michael 01 January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
Beach nourishment has become common in Florida and it occurs on beaches that are major loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nesting grounds. Despite efforts to use beach-quality sand, nourishment sand may be different in grain size, moisture content, shear resistance and temperature when compared to native sand. Two main aspects of loggerhead nesting may be affected by nourishment. First, nourishment may reduce nesting success [(female nesting emergences/ female total emergences) X 100] due to physical barriers (i.e., scarps or steep cliffs) that can impede gravid females. Second, nourishment may reduce reproductive success {i.e., hatching success) by altering the nestsand environment. The objective of this study was to compare loggerhead nesting success, nest placement, slopes at nest sites, nest depths, incubation periods, reproductive success and egg fates among an old renourished beach {"south"), a recently nourished beach ("treatment") and a natural beach ("control") at Sebastian Inlet, Florida in 1996, 1997 and 1998. In all three years, nesting success was significantly different among study sites. After nourishment (1997), nesting success was reduced at the treatment site due to a seaward scarp. A year later (1998), the scarp was leveled and nesting success improved. Nest placement was not significantly different between study sites prior to nourishm_ent of the treatment study site (1996), but it was after nourishment (1997) and one-year post-nourishment (1998). After nourishment, most nests at the treatment beach were placed too close to the water or too close to the dune. There were no significant differences in the slope at nest sites in 1997; suggesting females may have selected similar increases in slope, but at varied cross-shore locations. Nest depths were significantly shallower at the treatment beach after nourishment, probably due to higher compaction of the nourishment sand. In addition, incubation periods were significantly longer on the nourished beaches one year post-nourishment. Loggerhead hatching success was significantly reduced on the nourished beaches in 1996 and 1997. The reduction was seen primarily in a larger proportion of eggs that were arrested early in development. The higher moisture in the nourishment sand may have impeded gas exchange, which resulted in decreased hatching success. One year post-nourishment (1998), there were no significant differences in hatching success. The lack of rainfall in 1998 may have introduced better incubation conditions on the nourished beaches. Researchers at the Florida Institute of Technology continued to show that the nourishment sand exhibited significantly smaller grain size, higher moisture content, lower temperature and higher shear resistance. These attributes were probably responsible for many of the results reported herein. However, other variables such as non-random nest depredation, inlet influences and water table levels may have also contributed to the results.

ST.

Eriksson, Emil January 2024 (has links)
The essay examines St. Sebastian's iconographic connection to homosexuality. The aim is to examine the iconographic change that occurs when St. Sebastian goes from being a Christian martyr in sacred contexts, to symbolizing a homosexual identity in secular contexts. Francesco Vezzoli's work Selfie Sebastian is therefore analyzed to see how St. Sebastian's homoerotic heritage can be traced in a contemporary context. To answer the essay's questions posed in the present, the essay adopts a genealogical perspective and approach. Combined with contextualization, the essay tries to find and frame contexts relevant to the purpose and questions of the essay. Due to the nature of the essays aim and questions, iconographic analysis is also being used to some degree. The essay's questions are: "What discursive, historical and cultural breaks or shifts can be identified in the transition of St. Sebastian's iconographic image from religious martyr to symbol of homosexuality?" and "What aspects of St. Sebastian's homoerotic heritage can be traced in Francesco Vezzoli's Selfie Sebastian?". The essay's three main analytical chapters tries to answer these questions. The first analyzes St. Sebastian's history and iconographic development. The second analyzes St. Sebastian's iconographic connection to eroticism and homoeroticism. The Martyrdom's symbolic and metaphorical connection to feminized masculinity, homoerotic desire and sadomasochism. An in-depth analysis of the symbolic and metaphorical meaning of the arrow, and the connection of the myth of the saint to the homosexual identity. The third analyzes Vezzoli's work Selfie Sebastian in the exhibition Musei delle Lacrime, and its connection to the homosexual identity. The results identify the following breaking points: the entry of the arrow into the iconography of St. Sebastian, a shift to a greater focus on the martyrdom of the saint. The classicism of the Renaissance, where the iconography becomes more erotically charged, a shift that allows a symbolic and metaphorical connection to homosexuality, and the turn of the 19th century, a shift where the martyr becomes a subcultural marker of non-normative desires and homosexuality. Regarding Vezzoli' s Selfie Sebastian, it is clear that the work highlights and reinforces several aspects of St. Sebastian's homoerotic heritage, and shows how St. Sebastian can be seen as a symbol of the homosexual identity and a gay icon today.
