“An art which is honest enough to despair and yet go on” : the limitations and potential of narrative in three contemporary Irish novels

McCarthy, Karen Anne 18 June 2013 (has links)
M.A. (English) / This dissertation hinges on the exploration of three contemporary Irish novels, namely The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry, The Gathering by Anne Enright, and The Sea by John Banville. What the three works have in common, besides their nationality, is a preoccupation with what exceeds their grasp: that is, their inspiration is also their limitation. All three set themselves the task of capturing and representing a past. The first two position themselves as rehabilitators of portions of Ireland’s history that have been occluded from official versions thereof. (Banville’s novel attempts to skirt as many limitations as possible, including a national one, in order to grapple, as unhindered as possible, with what narrative can achieve). Fictional rehabilitations of what occurred in a phenomenal reality are inevitably fraught because of their form’s limited grasp. However, this study seeks to trace each work’s fitful engagement with what it cannot encapsulate in order to ascertain the capabilities of narrative, in spite of its inherent limitations. I employ a broadly post-structuralist theoretical framework in order to engage with novels that incorporate into their content an awareness of the parameters within which they are obliged to function. Ultimately, I draw conclusions (which are necessarily limited themselves) as to the gesture each novel attempts to make beyond its bounds.

Concert rock et théâtralité : Secret World Live de Peter Gabriel

Bercier, Ariane January 2016 (has links)

Alternate phonologies and morphologies

Bagemihl, Bruce January 1988 (has links)
This thesis investigates two types of alternate languages: LUDLINGS (also known as language games, speech disguises, etc.), which involve primarily nonconcatenative morphological manipulation of their source languages, and SURROGATE LANGUAGES, which substitute alternative sound-producing mechanisms (whistling or a musical instrument) for the larynx. Chapter 2 explores the autonomy of surrogate systems in relation to both their own modalities and their source language phonologies. After presenting a formal analysis of Akan drum speech, I develop a complete model of the surrogate component. I argue that many properties which distinguish whistle surrogates from instrumental surrogates can only be attributed to the modular organization of this component. The last part of the chapter provides an inventory of the types of processes present in each module of the surrogate component. Chapter 3 presents theoretical treatments of representatives of each of the three major categories of ludlings (templatic, infixing, and reversing), beginning with the katajjait (throat games) of the Canadian Inuit. Although customarily regarded as a form of music, the katajjait are actually a well-developed form of templatic ludling. The implications of an infixing ludling in Tigrinya for tiered and planar geometry are then investigated. The chapter concludes with a detailed analysis of reversing ludlings, based on a parametrized version of the Crossing Constraint. In Chapter 4 I develop an integrated model of alternate linguistic systems, starting with an investigation of where in the grammar the ludling component is located. Drawing on data from more than fifty languages, I propose that there are three conversion modules in this component, each taking a well-defined level of representation as its input. In the last portion of the chapter I explore the possibility that one or more of these modules overlaps with the last module of the surrogate component. I conclude that the similarities exhibited by ludlings and surrogates are not due to a shared conversion module, but rather reflect the interaction of three factors: 1) the salience of certain levels of representation within the grammar; 2) general properties of the domains in which conversion takes place; and 3) membership in a common alternate linguistic component. / Arts, Faculty of / Linguistics, Department of / Graduate

Une approche de son expression à partir de ses trois documentaires : Madonna, Truth or Dare, 1991 ; I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, 2005 ; I Am Because We Are, 2008 / The power of religion and politics in Madonna's work. An approach to her expression through her documentaries : Madonna, Truth or Dare, 1991; I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, 2005; I Am Because We Are, 2008

This dissertation deals with the ways in which the contemporary popular culture uses concepts and tools coming from religion and politics in order to exert some influence on our society. The length of American singer Madonna’s career makes her decades-long artistic expression a privileged locus where such concepts can be grasped and analysed, starting in the 1990’s. This provides the opportunity to better understand the means of expression in our contemporary world, together with what is at stake in popular culture.

FICTION MEDICINE AND THE COMMUNIST REVOLUTION IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

Zihan Wang (9171503) 28 July 2020 (has links)

This dissertation examines medical representations, or what I call “fiction medicine,” in post-1949 Chinese literature and film. It is not uncommon to evaluate whether medical facts are scientifically portrayed in literary and cinematic works. Insightful and reasonable as this method is, the interpretation of relevant descriptions from a single medical perspective tends to exclude what may be labeled as misrepresentations from scholarly attention. Therefore, without judging the value of fiction medicine in accordance with scientific standards, this dissertation analyzes how and why medical (mis)representations are formed in the way they are shown, which allows me to unearth those factors, such as politics, international relations, ideology, and the like, that exert considerable influence on the construction of medical landscape in cultural works.

By exploring the interaction between representations and medicine under the Chinese revolutionary context, I argue that during the socialist period (1949-78), while revolutionary concerns tightly regulated the writing of fiction medicine to consolidate the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s rule, the production of fiction medicine was not always monolithic, containing tensions and even resistances against the prevailing ideology. I also argue that, after 1978, although socialist fiction medicine was deconstructed in many ways, some remnants of its legacies have kept influencing contemporary literary and cinematic imaginations. Based on my main arguments, I will further explore why some socialist legacies were preserved and remained influential while others were abandoned as reminders of the past. I suggest that this phenomenon was highly related to the shifting goals of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the post-1978 political, ideological, and economic reorientation.

Secure Co-design: Confidentiality Preservation in Online Engineering Collaborations

Siva Chaitanya Chaduvula (6417071) 12 October 2021 (has links)

Research in engineering design assumes that data flows smoothly among different designers within a product realization process. This assumption is not valid in many scenarios, including when designers partner with a future competitor or when designers search for potential collaborators is hampered by an inability to share sensitive data. This information asymmetry among designers has an adverse effect on the outcomes of the product realization process. Designers need a secure yet collaborative design process that enables them to overcome these information-related risks borne from collaborators participating in their product realization process. Existing cryptographic techniques aimed at overcoming these risks are computationally intensive, making them unsuitable for heavy engineering computations such as finite element analysis (FEA). FEA is a widely used computation technique in several engineering applications, including structural analysis, heat transfer, and fluid flow. In this work, we developed a new approach, secure finite element analysis (sFEA), using which designers can perform their analysis without revealing their confidential design data to anyone, including their design collaborators even though the computed answer depends on confidential inputs from all the collaborators. sFEA is a secure, scalable, computationally lightweight, and cloud-compatible. In addition to sFEA, we developed prototypes and demonstrated that the computational framework within sFEA is general enough to be applied to different stages of the product realization process.

Zákon o registru smluv - výkladové problémy / The Act to Regulate the Register of Contracts - interpretation issues

Kořínková, Karolina January 2020 (has links)
This thesis deals with selected institutes of the Act No. 340/2015 Coll, to Regulate the Register of Contracts (hereinafter as "the Act"). The unifying criterion is their impact on entrepreneurial entities stated in section 2 subsection 1 of the Act. Selected institutes of the Act are contracts and information published in the register of contracts, legal entities by section 2 subsection 1 paragraph n) of the Act, the business secret as an exception of an obligation of publication and an exception of an obligation to published contract by section 3 subsection 2 paragraph q) of the Act. The aim of this thesis is to characterize these institutes in more detail and to find out possible interpreting ambiguities that concern them. It also attemps to offer their solutions with regard to the relevant specialised literature. The thesis is systematically divided into an introduction, four parts and a conclusion. Parts are further subdivided into chapters, subchapters and subchapters's points. The first part discourses about contracts and information published in the register of contracts especially focusing on private law contracts. This part also analyses a term of metadata and a form of published contracts. The second part reports about legal entities stated in section 2 subsection 1 paragraph n) of the...

Le secret et Polichinelle : ou cultures et pratiques de la clandestinité politique à Naples au début du XIX siècle (1799-1821) / The secret and Pulcinella : cultures and practices of political secret and clandestinity in Naples from 1799 to 1821

Di Mauro, Luca 15 June 2015 (has links)
The thesis aims to analyse the different utilisations of secret and clandestinity in the political life of the Kingdom Of Naples from 1799 to 1821. From the fall of the Napolitan Republic to the end of the constitution al period in 1821, the action of secret societies is one of the characteristics of the political system of southem Italy. The cases of the two main societies - the free-masonry and the carbonari - and of some minor groups, face the problem of the effectiveness of hidden political actions on both bands of self-defence instrument against repression and "place" to elaborate new policies and to keep the memory of the Revolution. Moreover, the form of the secret society is not used only by republicans and liberals but, from the very beginning, absolutists as well create their own secret societies.

Pojetí totality v díle George Orwela. / The concept of totalitarianism in the works of George Orwel.

Pelán, Štěpán January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to characterize the way George Orwell viewed the totalitarianism and how he portrayed this phenomenon in his works. The fundamental part is an analysis of the characteristics of totalitarian regimes in Orwell's most important works 1984 and Animal Farm. For a deeper understanding of Orwell's view of totalitarian regimes, his life and the events that shaped his political thinking were also discussed in more detail. In addition to the aforementioned, the work also includes a general characteristic of the typical features of totalitarianism and general principles of totalitarian regimes, referring to the historical and political context of the twentieth century of selected states, such as the USSR, Germany or Czechoslovakia. This section is followed by an analysis of selected works by authors who dealt with totalitarianism from the view of political theory, such as Hannah Arendt, F.A. Hayek, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Ernst Jünger. Though George Orwell described himself as a leftist and a socialist, he strictly rejected any form of totalitarian rule, and, as he wrote in one of his essays, much of his work was anti- totalitarian. His attitude towards totalitarianism began to emerge during the Spanish Civil War, in which he actively participated. There he also met for the first...

The Protection of British, American and German Intelligence during World War II

De Witte Parra, Mona 09 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates the protection of British intelligence sources during World War Two, and includes a comparison with American and German practices. In these three countries, intelligence officers adopted very different approaches to preserve these sources and to ensure that the latter could be used in the long term. Each country had a different perception of the balance between the immediate use of intelligence and the protection of its sources, between the short-term benefits and long-term preservation of these assets in the context of the war. Drawing on a vast amount of archival material, both civilian and military, this research presents these three countries’ various approaches and uses this analysis to reflect on their concrete achievements. This study interrogates the preconceived ideas about these countries’ intelligence practices, in particular the reputation of secrecy of the British agencies, as opposed to the lack of discretion of their American counterparts. Moreover, this thesis emphasises the particular situation of German secret services in a very divided country. The ambiguous cooperation between Britain and the United States during the Second World War helped pave the way for their « special relationship ». During the war, the balance of power between the two nations shifted dramatically, in the intelligence field as in many others. Moreover, the analysis of the exchanges between the British intelligence officers and their French and Soviet colleagues opens new research avenues in the study of their international relations and on these complex and fluctuating alliances.
