Framing Christianity: A frame analysis of Fundamentalist Christianity from 2000-2009

Sitten, Rebecca Mackin 01 January 2011 (has links)
This qualitative frame analysis examines how print media handles the concept of Fundamentalist Christianity. The researcher examined news reports in four prominent national newspapers over the ten-year period between 2000 and 2009 for references made to Fundamentalist Christianity. The sample is examined on the basis of Mark Silk's "topoi," a term taken from classical rhetoric meaning commonplaces or themes (1995). Silk outlines seven common topoi on which stories about religion are written, and these are utilized as a framework for this present study. While much has been written and researched on how religious groups, Fundamentalist Christians, and Evangelicals use mass media to promote their message to a secular audience, few studies have examined how the secular press frames Fundamentalist Christianity. This study, therefore, fills an existing literature gap by dissecting the portrayal of a demographic that has had a historical and cultural media presence for more than a century.

Atheism as Religious Criticism and Life Stance : A Study of The Swedish Hurman-Ethical Society’s Journal 1979-1999.

Lindgren, Matilda January 2021 (has links)
The thesis examines the atheistic development visible in the Swedish Human-Ethical Society’s (HEF) journal 1979 to 1999. It argues that HEF:s atheism from a diachronic perspective is best understood with the regards both to its religious criticisms, as well as to the specific outlook on life that the organisation developed over time as a secular alternative to religious belief-systems. The thesis further stresses the importance of comprehending atheism as a pluralistic system of thought that throughout history – as well as in present day – have taken a variety of different formations. Hence, atheism is not seen as possessing one single overall essence. The result of the study show that several developmental patterns can be made visible in HEF:s atheism throughout the period. The organisations religious criticism changed regarding its objects, contents and rhetoric. From initially having its focus directed towards Christianity (Swedish Christianity in particular), HEF later to a larger extent directed their critical gaze towards what they regarded as fundamentalist ideological values. Over time the organisation also started to highlight atheism in a, according to their phrasing, more “positive” light. With this, HEF:s human-ethical life stance was given a more instrumental role in the organisations message to the public. The thesis argues that this development should be understood as a successive shift in the basis for HEF:s atheism. On a general analytic level this process is characterized as a move from scientific atheism to humanist atheism.

Ascents and Descents: Personal Pilgrimage in Hieronymus Bosch's The Haywain

Daines, Alison 03 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
At the end of the fifteenth century, Hieronymus Bosch provided the foremost expression of the strict religious piety embodied by the Devotio Moderna and the impending embrace of secular humanism. As a result, Bosch's seemingly complex images provided viewers with positive messages concerning the journey of life through the use of binary symbolism. He utilized the pilgrimage motif as a guide throughout his paintings and in relation to the liminal spaces surrounding his works. This article will examine his important triptych, The Haywain, (c.1495-1516) as an example of spiritual paths taken simultaneously by both religious and contemporary figures, along with the viewers themselves. The underlying theme of Christ's Ascension in The Haywain plays out in an interwoven assortment of journeys, identified by characteristic northern and medieval Christian iconography. Christ's final journey acts as the ultimate goal and the paradigm for both the pilgrim within the triptych and the viewer. Evidence of processional celebrations mimicking pilgrimages reveals that the motifs in Bosch's works were located throughout his visual culture. Finally, an investigation of Bosch's 1505 triptych The Temptation of St. Anthony reveals that Bosch remains consistent in his use of the pilgrimage theme. Bosch worked within the context of the visual and textual culture of the Netherlandish city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and despite his creative style, was understood among his contemporaries as a messenger of positive piety.

Aucamp, Barend Bernardus 01 January 2002 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Summary in Afrikaans and English / This study is an attempt to analyse and describe syncretism as an encompassing phenomenon from a historical-educational perspective. In recent times, the ideas of globalization, the influence of modern science, as well as certain ideas concerning modern education, are closely related to the manifestation of syncretism. A study of various exemplars from the past and present disclosed the essences of syncretism, thus unveiling the religious growth-motives that underlie syncretism, which also played an important role in the development of Western civilization and the modem world. The multi-faith idea (the idea of unity and synthesis), the idea of secularization, and the idea of relativity, were identified as prominent characteristics of syncretism. The identification and analysis of the essences of syncretism and supporting religious principles. become possible when syncretism is set in opposition to the Biblical and reformational thought processes. Bible-based education provides an alternative to syncretism in a fast changing and post-modern world. It gives perspective on the instruction to people to care for and develop God's creation. The intrinsic characteristics of Bible-based education were used as evaluation criteria in an attempt to expose syncretism. The characteristics of Bible-based education which also provide a framework for establishing a corrective to the problematic educational situation, are the following: • the acknowledgement of the Holy Trinity as central to man's existence; • the Bible/Holy Scriptures as essential for a Christian world and life view; • the essence of a Christian anthropology; • education as the fulfilment of God's covenant with man; • the directive role of Bible-based norms; • the transfer of culture through education • Biblical cosmology as an expression of the Christian faith; • the reformational aspect of Bible-based education. In the evaluation of syncretism, it was discovered that the relationship between man and the Holy Trinity would be negatively affected if the Christian religion were not regarded as the only source of truth concerning the salvation of man and the true meaning of life. The influence of syncretism necessitates a reformational and antithetical approach, which constantly emphasises the importance of the educator's role in the teaching and education of the child in the modem educational system. / Educational Studies / D.
