Evaluation of Herbicide Formulation and Spray Nozzle Selection on Physical Spray Drift

Cobb, Jasper Lewis 13 December 2014 (has links)
New transgenic crops are currently being developed which will be tolerant to dicamba and 2,4-D herbicides. This technology could greatly benefit producers who are impacted by weed species that have developed resistance to other herbicides, like glyphosate-resistant Palmer Amaranth. Adoption of this new technology is likely to be rapid and widespread which will lead to an increase in the amount of dicamba and 2,4-D applied each season. It is well-documented that these herbicides are very injurious to soybeans, cotton, tomatoes, and most other broadleaf crops, and their increased use brings along increased chances of physical spray drift onto susceptible crops. Because of these risks, research is being conducted on new herbicide formulation/spray nozzle combinations to determine management options which may minimize physical spray drift.

Improved Methods for Interrupted Time Series Analysis Useful When Outcomes are Aggregated: Accounting for heterogeneity across patients and healthcare settings

Ewusie, Joycelyne E January 2019 (has links)
This is a sandwich thesis / In an interrupted time series (ITS) design, data are collected at multiple time points before and after the implementation of an intervention or program to investigate the effect of the intervention on an outcome of interest. ITS design is often implemented in healthcare settings and is considered the strongest quasi-experimental design in terms of internal and external validity as well as its ability to establish causal relationships. There are several statistical methods that can be used to analyze data from ITS studies. Nevertheless, limitations exist in practical applications, where researchers inappropriately apply the methods, and frequently ignore the assumptions and factors that may influence the optimality of the statistical analysis. Moreover, there is little to no guidance available regarding the application of the various methods, and a standardized framework for analysis of ITS studies does not exist. As such, there is a need to identify and compare existing ITS methods in terms of their strengths and limitations. Their methodological challenges also need to be investigated to inform and direct future research. In light of this, this PhD thesis addresses two main objectives: 1) to conduct a scoping review of the methods that have been employed in the analysis of ITS studies, and 2) to develop improved methods that address a major limitation of the statistical methods frequently used in ITS data analysis. These objectives are addressed in three projects. For the first project, a scoping review of the methods that have been used in analyzing ITS data was conducted, with the focus on ITS applications in health research. The review was based on the Arksey and O’Malley framework and the Joanna Briggs Handbook for scoping reviews. A total of 1389 studies were included in our scoping review. The articles were grouped into methods papers and applications papers based on the focus of the article. For the methods papers, we narratively described the identified methods and discussed their strengths and limitations. The application papers were summarized using frequencies and percentages. We identified some limitations of current methods and provided some recommendations useful in health research. In the second project, we developed and presented an improved method for ITS analysis when the data at each time point are aggregated across several participants, which is the most common case in ITS studies in healthcare settings. We considered the segmented linear regression approach, which our scoping review identified as the most frequently used method in ITS studies. When data are aggregated, heterogeneity is introduced due to variability in the patient population within sites (e.g. healthcare facilities) and this is ignored in the segmented linear regression method. Moreover, statistical uncertainty (imprecision) is introduced in the data because of the sample size (number of participants from whom data are aggregated). Ignoring this variability and uncertainty will likely lead to invalid estimates and loss of statistical power, which in turn leads to erroneous conclusions. Our proposed method incorporates patient variability and sample size as weights in a weighted segmented regression model. We performed extensive simulations and assessed the performance of our method using established performance criteria, such as bias, mean squared error, level and statistical power. We also compared our method with the segmented linear regression approach. The results indicated that the weighted segmented regression was uniformly more precise, less biased and more powerful than the segmented linear regression method. In the third project, we extended the weighted method to multisite ITS studies, where data are aggregated at two levels: across several participants within sites as well as across multiple sites. The extended method incorporates the two levels of heterogeneity using weights, where the weights are defined using patient variability, sample size, number of sites as well as site-to-site variability. This extended weighted regression model, which follows the weighted least squares approach is employed to estimate parameters and perform significance testing. We conducted extensive empirical evaluations using various scenarios generated from a multi-site ITS study and compared the performance of our method with that of the segmented linear regression model as well as a pooled analysis method previously developed for multisite studies. We observed that for most scenarios considered, our method produced estimates with narrower 95% confidence intervals and smaller p-values, indicating that our method is more precise and is associated with more statistical power. In some scenarios, where we considered low levels of heterogeneity, our method and the previously proposed method showed comparable results. In conclusion, this PhD thesis facilitates future ITS research by laying the groundwork for developing standard guidelines for the design and analysis of ITS studies. The proposed improved method for ITS analysis, which is the weighted segmented regression, contributes to the advancement of ITS research and will enable researchers to optimize their analysis, leading to more precise and powerful results. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Improving Segmented Taper Models through Generalization and Mixed Effects

Jordan, Lewis 30 April 2011 (has links)
One area of forest biometrics that continues to progress is the development of statistical models as tools to describe tree taper. Taper models allow for the prediction of multiple tree level attributes including: diameter at any height, total tree stem volume, merchantable volume and height to any upper stem diameter from any lower stem height, individual log volumes, and subsequently total tree value. In this work, we generalize segmented regression taper models to include multiple segments and compare it to the traditional 3-Segment (2-Knot) models commonly observed in the forestry literature. We then focus on predicting a future realization of diameter given previously observed data. This is accomplished by comparing a segmented taper model under both the Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach (GADA) and Nonlinear Mixed Effects Models (NLMM) methodologies. Both the GADA and NLMM allow for predictions at the individual tree level of a future realization diameter given a differing number of observed height-diameter pairs. Finally, we explore the prediction and cost/benefit of total tree volume obtained from an integrated taper equation with the incorporation of tree specific random effects given differing observed height-diameter pairs.

Abordagem bayesiana de modelos de regressão com platô de resposta / Bayesian approach of regression models with response plateau

Mangueira, Rick Anderson Freire 08 February 2019 (has links)
Studies to establish adequate levels of nutrients in animal diets are quite common in the scientific world. Such studies are performed using the mean of the response variable in the different levels of the independent variable and, generally, through a frequentist approach. Thus, much information is lost or even the means influenced by extreme values in the results of the repetitions. The objective of the present work was to perform a simulation study of regression models with response plateau, where as different scenarios of different sample sizes, besides the homogeneity and heterogeneity of variance between levels of the dosage factor taking the repetitions in each dosage into account, through Bayesian approach. Fits were also made to the quadratic regression models with response plateau and nonlinear regression with response plateau using Bayesian methodology to estimate the parameters of the models. The simulated data represented the zinc content (Zn) deposited in the tibia of broilers, which received the dosages 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 ppm of Zn in the feed. In the scenarios 1, 2 and 3 were attributed constant variance with sample sizes of n = 16, n = 30 and n = 100, respectively. In the scenarios 4, 5 and 6 the sample sizes were, respectively, n = 16, n = 30 and n = 100, but with different variances along the dose factor. The data used for the study on the regression models with response plateau refer to the Zn content, in ppm, in the tibia of male and female broilers as response variable. The simulation analysis showed that it is appropriate to use the models with response plateau considering the repetition of the samples at each dose to estimate the adequate level of a nutrient in the animal feed. In the fit of the models to the real data, the quadratic regression model with response plateau considering the heterogeneity of variances was the one that presented the best fit, which an estimate of x̂0 = 73.26 ppm for the level of Zn applied to the feed for a Zn deposition in the chicken tibia of P̂ = 290.12 ppm.

Modelos de regressão e curvas de produção vegetal: aplicações nas áreas de nutrição mineral de plantas e adubação / Regression models and yield curves: with applications in plant mineral nutrition and fertilization

Ferreira, Iuri Emmanuel de Paula 15 June 2015 (has links)
The evaluation of the plant nutritional status requires standards for comparisons, such as the critical levels and sufficiency ranges. These standards are generally estimated by means of the yield curves in response to fertilizers, which relates production with doses applied or nutrient content in the plant tissues. The yield curve is essential for the development of researches on plant mineral nutrition and fertilization, since knowledge of this curve allows economic use of fertilizers and planning strategies for soil correction. However, the production curve is divided into different nutritional regimes, which give it a peculiar shape and hinders its mathematical description. In this work, the objective is to build flexible regression models, able to adequately describe the yield curves. In a first approach, linear piecewise models with smooth transitions between regimes are used to describe the winter-wheat yield in function of the nitrogen doses. By means of the fits of these models, the critical levels and sufficiency ranges are also estimated. In another approach, it is proposed a mathematical model for yield response (or returns) from fertilizers - toxic doses are neglected in this phase. It is verified that each possible yield response type is uniquely related with a production function. This approach allows to construct new production functions and, indeed, provides clear physiological interpretations for the parameters of some common models in agriculture. Based on the second approach, it is presented a new statement for the Mitscherlich law: the greater is the total content of the limiting nutrient in the plant, the lower is the exploited fraction (in order to provide growth) of an increment in its availability - as a consequence, the returns from fertilization are diminishing.

This work had the purpose of studying the embedment resistance of connections made by metallic pins (nails) in structural pieces of wood. For that, three main approaches were considered: analytical, numerical and experimental. Initially, a theoretical survey was carried out on the subject, based on available literature, for the evaluation of national and international standardization related to the subject. Experimental tests were carried out on test specimens composed of pine and eucalyptus reforestation woods species with metal connections made by pins with a diameter of 6.5 mm. The tests were carried out according to the recommendations of Brazilian ABNT NBR 7190:1997, European EUROCODE 5:2004 and American ASTM D5764:2007 standards for further comparison between the obtained results for the embedment resistance. A statistical analysis of the obtained results was carried out, including a study of the resistance corrected by the humidity and the density. The theoretical analytical values of resistance were calculated using formulas proposed by each standard and compared to the averages of the experimental values. It was also proposed the analysis of the ideal resistance value by segmented regression analysis methods on the curves of the embedment behavior data set generated by the standards. Finally, numerical simulations were performed in ABAQUS software, which is based on the Finite Element Method (MEF) to evaluate the stress distributions in the bond areas. The obtained results showed that there are significant divergences between the experimental values of resistance obtained through the studied standards when compared to each other. They also show that the analytical calculated values overestimate the experimental resistance for all studied standards. Also, that the strength corrected by the density presents better dispersion perform quality for the studied data set. It is concluded that the studied statistical methods of segmented regression can be a good alternative for modeling the mechanical behavior of the wood to obtain characteristic values more invariant and standardized for the resistance parameters.

The Monitoring of Linear Profiles and the Inertial Properties of Control Charts

Mahmoud, Mahmoud A. 17 November 2004 (has links)
The Phase I analysis of data when the quality of a process or product is characterized by a linear function is studied in this dissertation. It is assumed that each sample collected over time in the historical data set consists of several bivariate observations for which a simple linear regression model is appropriate, a situation common in calibration applications. Using a simulation study, the researcher compares the performance of some of the recommended approaches used to assess the stability of the process. Also in this dissertation, a method based on using indicator variables in a multiple regression model is proposed. This dissertation also proposes a change point approach based on the segmented regression technique for testing the constancy of the regression parameters in a linear profile data set. The performance of the proposed change point method is compared to that of the most effective Phase I linear profile control chart approaches using a simulation study. The advantage of the proposed change point method over the existing methods is greatly improved detection of sustained step changes in the process parameters. Any control chart that combines sample information over time, e.g., the cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart and the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart, has an ability to detect process changes that varies over time depending on the past data observed. The chart statistics can take values such that some shifts in the parameters of the underlying probability distribution of the quality characteristic are more difficult to detect. This is referred to as the "inertia problem" in the literature. This dissertation shows under realistic assumptions that the worst-case run length performance of control charts becomes as informative as the steady-state performance. Also this study proposes a simple new measure of the inertial properties of control charts, namely the signal resistance. The conclusions of this study support the recommendation that Shewhart limits should be used with EWMA charts, especially when the smoothing parameter is small. This study also shows that some charts proposed by Pignatiello and Runger (1990) and Domangue and Patch (1991) have serious disadvantages with respect to inertial properties. / Ph. D.

Experiments were installed in Chapadão do Sul-MS, Água Clara-MS and Chapadão do Céu-GO, in 2006/07 crop. Were evaluated 20 soybean cultivars, been 10 transgenic (RR) and 10 no transgenic. The production environments were locals and sowing seasons combination, been four seasons at Chapadão do Sul, (10/16/06, 10/27/06, 11/17/06 and 11/30/06), two at Água Clara (11/07/06 and 11/28/06) and two at Chapadão do Céu (10/27/06 and 11/23/06). Stability and adaptability analysis were performed by bi-segmented linear regression. No transgenic cultivars were more productive at favorable and unfavorable environments average, presenting performance greater than productivity average (3,701kg.ha-1), when compared to transgenic cultivars, except TMG 115 (RR) and TMG 121 (RR). Transgenic cultivars tend to be more sensitive to environment changes than no transgenic, nevertheless didn’t happen for stability. Early sowing seasons present the best environments index, been indicated for high grain yield. On the whole of stability and adaptability parameters, cultivar TG 115 (RR) was the best, been indicated as much for favorable as unfavorable environments. Following classify themselves Msoy 8001 and Chapadões cultivars. The Valiosa cultivar, more cultivated in area, was more stable, however with inferior yield.
